“Aggressive” Dirk Koetter
January 19th, 2016Some Bucs fans believed former coach Lovie Smith was less than aggressive with the football.
Who can forget when Lovie, after getting beaten by two points at home by the Rams two years ago, stated openly he didn’t want to score late in the first half?
Well, that’s likely going to change under new head coach Dirk Koetter. While during the season Koetter confessed Lovie liked to run the ball and he was more than willing to serve Lovie’s interests. Last week, Koetter hinted he plans to let it fly.
“I will say that when you’re the head coach and you’re the playcaller, you have a license to be a little more aggressive,” Koetter said. “You know, that’s how I was when I was a high school coach. That’s how I was when I was a college coach. Now that comes from inside me, because you have the power to decide. You have the power to decide, ‘Are we going for it on 4th-and-1?’ You have the power to decide, ‘Do we need to throw it deep three times in a row, or do we need to give it to Doug Martin three times in a row?’ And you don’t have to worry about the head coach second guessing you. You are the head coach. So you make your game plan, you stick to your game plan.”
Let’s hope that Koetter doesn’t get reckless by being too aggressive.
But you know who else is aggressive, and it has cost him at least one good job in the past? That would be Bruce Arians, a guy Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht had a hand in hiring at Arizona.

Too aggressive is better than too conservative. Take control of your destiny. Sounds cheesy but one thing I learned in life is that you never let your opposition dictate the outcome. Take the effing chances. If you botch it you learn and get better. But letting the opposition dictate your moves is the attitude of a loser. AKA. Loser Lovie.

I think it’s a matter of being unpredictable….we were much less predictable last year and that’s why our offense did better.
I like play action on first down…..passing on 2nd and 1…and 3rd and 1 in their territory when if you don’t complete….you are going for it on 4th anyway.
I’d really like to see an upgrade at FB….
Javorski Lane had 1 rushing and 2 passing plays……not per game….all year!!!
Now…coach…..lets see some improvement there with the player or play calling.
I have posted my opinion on this many times…and have not received any feedback….

Old news.. Old quotes.

That goes with Jameis saying (paraphrased) “You gotta go out and TAKE wins.”

@TBBF Yes it would be nice if we had a monster FB who go at least occasionally go into beast mode.
As for the aggression and backfiring…Bruce Ariens is still taking heat for passing near the end of his game with the Pack. If it had worked people would be calling him genius for keeping the ball out of Rodgers hands for the rest of the game.
It didn’t but he survived. Same for Carroll in the SB…if he had simply called the right play..Wilson rolls right and either runs it in or hits an open target in the end zone OR..failing all of that throws it away and then goes into beast mode the final play…gamble was correct..play calling was mindnumbing!!
I just hope Koetter has adopted this Ariens philosphy when asked about the pass. He’s not a fan of “prevent” I call them “pray” defenses.
Ariens said succinctly….”I play to win!!!”
Amen brother!!! Too many coaches play to avoid losing.

Aggressive? Reckless? Who Cares?
Let it Fly, I’m sick of conservative. Go for it.

No disrespect to the above posters but the fb is going away more and more with the 3wr sets…or 1 back 2 te sets….i think if asj steps up and plays better maybe that koetter uses brate more of the H back look for blocking purposes…we shall see…of sourse we need to keep dougie

@Dusty
No disrespect taken because you have a very valid point!
And if Koetter goes 4 vertical that will emphasize your point.
I guess the Marshawn Lynches and Eddie Lacy’s are the exception these days that’s for sure…not sure whether that’s a lack of stud backs or the new offenses or a combination of both.
Your point is well taken.

I’m not the least worried about our Offense. It will take care of itself (hope Mankins comes back). Note to Mr Koetter..You’d better find an aggressive Defense from somewhere. I do know that. Because if our Defense is the same or just slightly improved, I will guarantee all of you, a worst record than last year with our schedule. So you wanna talk aggressive? TALK DEFENSE.

I don’t think he is going to be aggressive just to be aggressive. But if you have a feeling that you need to get 7 instead of 3, sometimes you should go for it. You need to challenge your team to see what they are made of. Jameis has shown to make some amazing clutch plays. If a game came down to trusting the kicker to make a 50 yard FG, or Winston on 4th and 4. Im going with Winston. And I know Dirk would do the same thing. Not just because our kickers have been terrible. But Winston has that clutch factor in him. His desire to win just takes over and he does everything possible to come out on top. Why wouldn’t you go with that guy? It’s not a decision you take every time. But in the early growing years you have to test and challenge your team to see if they will succeed.

We need more aggressiveness…. if I ever see a game played like the one against Washington this past season I’ll puke…. best way to sustain a lead is to build on it… don’t let your foot off the gas Dirk

Sounds good so long as we can run the ball. If this team has Championship aspirations they will have to move the ball on great defenses. That doesn’t happen at a successful rate on 3rd and 10. Flash and dash is fun but if we are going to win with offense we better be able to run.
No more edivence is needed for me then to look at the the most explosive offense I have seen….” The greatest show on turf” who employed a pro bowl RB.

AGREE WITH THIS!!!!

when a good coach and a good QB share a mindset, good things usually happen. fingers crossed for this aggressive duo that seems to hate losing more than most

Bruce Arians is arguably the best coach out there right now.
And his cards will beat those panties and then Larry will finally get his ring after they win the SB.

If a game came down to trusting the kicker to make a 50 yard FG, or Winston on 4th and 4. Im going with Winston.
I’m with you 100%…UNLESS…we get another Nole this year..Roberto Aguayo.
I’m not even a Nole fan…nor a hater…I certainly respect their program and Jimbo is one of the top recruiters and coaches in the land…
But the little I’ve seen of Aguayo and what I’ve read of him..he’s the real deal.
He would make those decisions difficult and depend on the rest of the game situation.

I’d rather lose knowing we gave it our all and being aggressive, as apposed to tip toeing be conservative and playing to lose. We have lost waaaaaay to many games by being freaking conservative and not going for the jugular. Can you say Kirk Cousins????? Talk about wanting to jump off a bridge … how about Russell Wilson 2 years ago…same s#it…up 24 and lose. WTF!!! If Dirk wants to sling it….LET IT FLY!!!!!

Pick6 your analogy is correct. Now we just need Koetter to be good and we’re set. Oh, Licht continuing to be good will also help.
