It sure seems like a big deal that Lovie Smith ripped the headset, in a manner of speaking, off the head of defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.
Lovie did his best today to dodge the question about him calling defensive plays, saying in his entire head coaching career he always had a hand in calling plays. (more…)
[UPDATE: The full interview of Lavonte David discussing Lovie Smith taking over play-calling duties for the defense is now uploaded. — Joe.]
Yes, Lovie Smith is your new Buccaneers defensive playcaller. Joe’s written plenty about it over the past couple of days.
Will it make a difference? Joe asked Lavonte David today. (more…)
Updated: 6:59 p.m. – It was an underwear football afternoon– no contact or lower pads — for your Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the final day of training camp at One Buc Palace.
Joe patrolled the sidelines to be your eyes and ears. Here are the highlights: (more…)
SiriusXM NFL Radio dropped by One Buc Palace as part of its annual Training Camp Tour, when a three-hour show is devoted to just one team. Thursday was the Bucs’ turn.
Co-host and former Bucs defensive tackle Booger McFarland noted that “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, won’t just have to master being an NFL quarterback.
Young Jameis must survive the perils of the mean streets of Tampa. (more…)
Preseason games are about teams executing scripts and reaching their internal goals, not winning.
Dirk Koetter opened up about the plan for the Bucs’ preseason opener and how things changed. (more…)
More than a few Bucs fans immediately scoffed at Bruce Carter when Lovie Smith announced that rookie fourth-round draft pick Kwon Alexander was elevated to the starting gig at middle linebacker.
Naturally, these same fans began mocking Carter as yet another free agent bust. That allegation would be patently inaccurate, said Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht. (more…)
Before training camp, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter told Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com that Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, was being blasted with a massive playbook and already had in his head enough plays to fill 10 regular-season game plans. (more…)
It won’t be long before Bucs fans gnaw their fingernails off in anticipation of cuts to the 53-man roster. Who will go and who will stay?
Joe frankly finds this more interesting than preseason games, one of the greatest scams perpetrated on innocent Americans since New Coke. (more…)
Telling words from Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
The thing is, Joe isn’t exactly sure what those words tell. (more…)
Yesterday, it was learned that Leslie Frazier was stripped of his playcalling duties.
Instead, it is head coach Lovie Smith who will be the shotcaller when the Bucs’ defense takes the field. (more…)
Yes, Joe was on ESPN Tallahassee radio yesterday talking Bucs with Jeff Cameron, he of “The Jeff Cameron Show.”
Joe has long been a fan of Cameron who puts together a damned good radio show.
Cameron a native of St. Petersburg, got Joe all fired up talking about how opposing defensive lines have “unabated” access to Bucs quarterbacks, and Joe nearly lost it talking about a nonexistent edge rush on opposing quarterbacks. (more…)
Joe served up cool video of the Bucs in an angry practice skirmish yesterday at One Buc Palace.
And now, Joe has video of what led to the flared tempers. Gerald McCoy, Clinton McDonald, Ali Marpet and Evan Smith are the stars. (more…)
“When you look at those last 10 games of the season and you see that we finished in the top five in almost every category group, including points, that’s what gets you excited. There are some things we can build on. We are expecting the guys that are coming back to really improve.” — Leslie Frazier talking in May about the Bucs defense last year. (more…)
Joe is often asked how players look in training camp.
It’s a tough answer for a variety of reasons, but after a couple of weeks of practices things start to stand out. (more…)
Longtime NFL Films Xs and Os guru Greg Cosell is down on the Bucs because he sees Tampa Bay as a team with a “pocket passer behind a bad O-line.”
But Cosell also offered some upside after the Bucs’ preseason opener in Minnesota. (more…)
Former Bucs defensive tackle Booger McFarland had all sorts of things to say about “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.
Booger was part of the SiriusXM NFL Radio broadcast team at One Buc Palace yesterday for the station’s annual training camp tour stop. Bucs day was lively and filled with interviews. (more…)
It was fashionable for some to liken the Lovie Smith era to the early days of Father Dungy coaching the Buccaneers.
But now that Lovie has seized the playcalling reins of the defense, Joe thinks the Raheem Morris analogy fits much better. (more…)
Accolades for Bucs starting middle linebacker Kwon Alexander continue to flow in, and the rookie’s name was spoken quite a bit yesterday as SiriusXM NFL Radio broadcast their three-hour Bucs training camp special from One Buc Palace.
A slew of coaches and players made appearances to chat with co-hosts Zig Fracassi and former Bucs defensive tackle Booger McFarland. And yes, Joe will bring you a slew of the interview highlights over the next few days. (more…)
If this latest report is accurate, then Joe believes it says a heck of a lot about what Lovie Smith thinks of the Bucs’ 2014 defense. (more…)
Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has pet peeves. You can see it on his face at times. The guy is not stoic in the Lovie Smith mode. (more…)
It’s Joe’s exclusive video from today’s practice.
Enjoy. And scroll down. Joe’s got plenty more.
Man, the practices the past two days at One Buc Palace have been really steamy. Today, Joe thought he just stepped out of the shower. It was only 10:30 a.m.
Imagine what the Bucs were feeling? Trust Joe, they were broiling. (more…)
