“Never Got It Back On Either Side Of The Ball”

Gerald McCoy has a confusing perspective

Gerald McCoy has a confusing perspective

Joe can’t believe what came out of Gerald McCoy’s mouth last night.

Joe watched the Bucs-Bears game multiple times, just like legions of devoted fans and likely every member of the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay came out roaring at halftime while trailing 13-7. America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, led a touchdown drive capped by an improvisational 50 yard catch-and-run by Charles Sims. So the Bucs seized a 14-13 lead. Then, the Bucs’ defense beautifully held the Bears for a 3-and-out before the home crowd.

That’s not only a massive momentum swing, that’s the definition of a momentum shift for the Bucs.

But Gerald McCoy has a different take. Speaking on his Buccaneer Radio Network show last night, McCoy said Tampa Bay’s first-quarter, lost-to-a-penalty interception by William Gholston buried the Bucs.

“I believe that honestly was the turning point of the game because of the momentum shift. We had it rolling and it shifted and we never got it back on either side of the ball,” McCoy said. “And, you know, that’s tough, man. We’re playing against the best in the world. Once you have momentum, you gotta keep it.”

Again, Joe is troubled by McCoy’s perception here as a player. McCoy was on the field experiencing the euphoria of the Bucs taking the lead in the third quarter and then stuffing the Bears and fully regaining momentum. But McCoy can’t remember that for some reason.

There’s been a really messed up mindset, a fragile mental core of this team evident since opening day.

Does Lovie Smith have the tools to make this team mentally tougher? So far, that answer is a resounding no!

  2. lightningbuc Says:

Luckily, another Tuesday came and went, and all the players’ checks cashed – that’s all that really matters to them.

  3. Warrenfb12 Says:

Just more loser mentality from lavonte and Gerald

  4. Jerseybuc Says:

We are a soft team. We look good when things are rolling our way, like in Philly. But when things go south on us, we don’t respond for some reason. We lose focus, we commit penalties, and except for our young QB no one seems to step up in crunch time.
The last three games it was clearly evident that teams out of the playoff hunt had much more energy and will than we had.
Not sure if it is a lack of leadership or just the character of the team but it needs to change if we are going to win anytime soon.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

He really does give NO ONE and I mean NO ONE any reason to hype this guy.

Knock it off everyone of you. Yes that includes those that have his jersey. He’s just another player on a chitty d-line.

  6. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

GMC and is aww shucks get em next time mentality permeates thru the defense and is allowed to fester via Lovie… sick of this bring in someone to hold these guys accountable to play at the highest level needed, I think the DL coach is only one with the fire on thst side of the ball, can Lovie hire Mcdaniels and some up n coming DC

  7. Buc1987 Says:

Joe…you may as well get George Johnson’s take. How come we never get any articles from the rest of d-linemen? It’s always THIS guy.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Oh now I know why Joe loves him…

  9. ElioT Says:

IMHO, this losing mentality and complete lack of mental toughness is the SINGLE most glaring reason the Bucs are the Sucs.

It’s taking a class of rookies (in Lovie’s 2nd draft) to attempt to change this? Not the coach or the veteran players, but a class full of rookies?

    This is an absolute joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can anyone sit here and justify keeping Lovie here?

You want to keep the continuity of a loser who fosters mental weakness?

    GTFO!

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe by momentum…he means total domination….and that, we lost….but we have got to rebound from some of these early setbacks…..we did it in Philadelphia.

  11. BuccaneEric75 Says:

But McCoy just wants the team to have fun!!! That’s the point of playing the game, to have fun…right??? LOL!!!

  12. bucrightoff Says:

Everyone who’s watched this team the last few years knew that game was over the second that pick was called back. Team has no mental toughness or character, and there’s little to no accountability in the locker room. That’s why whenever people say “We’re close”, we’re really not even slightly close. Still need to purge a significant amount of the loser mentality.

  13. Clodhopper Says:

Soft. He needs a slap in the face like an 80s sitcom to knock him back to reality. It’s like he doesn’t know how big and strong and smart he is. He a f*cking tiger that don’t know he has teeth!! People say things like ” I’d like to see you call him a p*ssy to his face.” What’s it matter? He wouldn’t do anything about it.

That’s why I’m pissed at GMC. He’s better than this and he’s better than he’s been playing and he needs to get his act together

  14. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s taken a little while, but the weeds are starting to show themselves. DB called it. We’re seeing where the problem areas are in the locker room. Nobody needs to go pounding the drum for or against anyone that they think are problem areas. Just sit back and let little gems like these present themselves. This off season, Licht needs to put on his gardening gloves and start yanking some weeds

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Yall just dont get it. McCoy and the rest of the defense, and team, is adopting the coaches weak minded mentality. This has Lovie written all over it. I’ve been saying it and I’ll keep saying it, this team is exactly like the coach. Get rid of him before he infects Jameis to!

  16. ATrain Says:

McCoy is having fun…Cashing that Hugh Paycheck and laughing at the Fans who pay to watch him play slsp hands..

McCoy is the best Sales person in the world. He sold this team he is an elite..

Maybe he should watch Sapp and then shut his mouth..

Play Football McCoy and earn that payday the Fans wanted for you

  17. Tnew Says:

I felt like this was one of gmc’s better games but that sort of mindset can’t come from the highest paid player on the team. He is a leader in because the front office has paid him as one. Next season is a defacto contract year. I hope he spends as much time soul searching as in the weight room.

  18. Bculaw Says:

The part of the quote that really bothered me was his reference to the Bears as the “best players in the world.” I get that he is referring to NFL players, in general, as the best of the best, but seems to me that he is just building himself and the team an excuse for losing. “Well, we lost, but that happens when you don’t get the breaks against the best in the world.” Sorry, but that attitude doesn’t fit with a winning culture. Respect all of the teams, certainly. But, a championship team would expect to beat the Bears and every other team in the league. Don’t give yourself an excuse to accept losing!!!!

  19. Buc1987 Says:

“Get rid of him before he infects Jameis to”

Couch I’ve actually pondered that already.

JW and Lovie Smith have total opposite personalities. Like trying to put 2 magnets together, it doesn’t work.

Oh but that’s right, Lovie has been good for Jameis Winston. That’s gotta be the most laughable thing I’ve read on this site since I posted about my Freeman banner.

Lovie’s going to hold Jameis back Bucs fans. Wake the hell up.

  20. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Little off topic but I wanna ask you a question joe. Who do you feel is more important to the Buccs organization right now Dirk Koetter or Jason Licht?

  21. destro44 Says:

GMC, the leader of this defense if you want to call it that is as soft and mentally weak as they come. The team is following his lead and its awful. Sadly soft can’t be fixed that easy. Its easier to replace.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

“We gonna have fun” – Gerald McCoy

    smh

  23. destro44 Says:

    Buc1987

I don’t think Ray Lewis ever said that to his team before. Maybe before his boys shot that guy in Atlanta, but never to his team.

  24. Phil Says:

McCoy is way over rated. We should trade him for a number one.

  25. destro44 Says:

    @phil

I would trade for 1 sack of new footballs. Seriously, his attitude is poisoning the team. With his contract the only sucker that might trade for him at all is Jerry Jones.

  26. poor glennon Says:

Chill with the mental toughness crap. You all are not mentally tough. Listen to your comments. If you guys played Sunday. With your mentality. Pissed off at coach, fellow players, fans. That’s not mental toughness. That’s letting your emotions get carried away. The opposite of mental toughness. Focused with a clear head. Not letting outside forces sway you. Being strong and believing every body coming out of the tunnel with you. Are there to do one thing….Win.

  27. Patrick in VA Says:

Maybe we can trade him for another DBs coach. Maybe if every player in our secondary has their own personal football/life coach then we can look like a professional defense.

  28. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

GERALD MCCOY IS A LOSER, CAN’T FIX IT …….TRADE HIS ASS , HE IS AN INFECTION ON THIS TEAM…….AND FIRE LOVIE , HE TO IS AN INFECTION …….

  29. Couch Fan Says:

Lovie’s going to hold Jameis back Bucs fans. Wake the hell up.
    ————————————-
Yup. Jameis has that killer mentality but will be reduced to a Victim mentality that we are hearing from our once great players like McCoy and LVD who we never thought of as mentally weak til Great Ole Nice Guy Lovie got here.

  30. LargoBuc Says:

That is just sickening! We had the momentum back to start the second half! Wtf are you talking about Mccoy? How could you try to spin it like that when we all know that bull sit! Gtfo Mccoy! Your that same soft lil bitsh that just layed down for Kase Kennum when literally the oposing defense just punked our freaking qb! I dont give a spit about the other 10 defenders, your supposed to be a leader and you cant so much as breathe on Keenum! You just let him lead a td drive while Jameis and Evans are steppin up to those punks. You soft af Gerald! You pis me off! Your an over paid diva! You just wana get your face on the pro bowl and call yourself a leader! You must think we’re stupid or something you make me sick! How I wish we could trade you! Aaron Donald is out there hiting people, no one wants to play him! He gets in their head! All oc’s gotta do is game plan you and its done!

  31. SteveK Says:

    Weak mentality.

    Rutgers Football is grittier.

Schiano should have gotten a third year. Now we are stuck with Lovie. Watching this sh!t show is like watching the turd that won’t flush.

Can we expect playoffs in 2016? LOL, can we even have a defender get 10+ sacks.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

    Couch that’s the truth.

Jameis Winston has the mind of a Great White Shark and Lovie’s a Guppy.

  33. SteveK Says:

It’s a sad day for Buccaneer football when we don’t have competitive football players.

These losers are ok with losing.

It’s one thing to have an elite level of physical talent, but where is your pride? If GMC is truly the leader of this team, he will make those around him better, not softer.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

LargoBuc …Do you like Gerald McCoy?

  35. destro44 Says:

    @ poorglennon

Everyone believing in the other guy is a dream with this team. I bet a poll of Bucs defensive players would show they don’t believe in GMC!

  36. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

    LMBAO

  37. 813bucboi Says:

@couch…gmc had a losing mentality WAY before lovie got there…he never won anything at OU and never won anything with schiano….players like jameis and kwon are rookies that display the type of character lovie has…poise, passionate, aggressive, tough and smart…gmc has been losing way before lovie and it wont stop until kwon comes back and puts the captin hat on for the defense….GO BUCS!!!

  38. SteveK Says:

    Buc1987,

No one “hates” GMC, but we hate the level of softness and the lack of defensive results led by our $100 million DT.

At what point can we ask Lovie, GMC, and Lavonte whet the hell is going on out there?

I wish OneLove could answer as to why Lovie’s Defense looks worse than Rutgers Schiano’s?

In what universe can you win 8 games in two years and the fans and ownership will have a good feeling about the direction of this team?

Our 2015 schedule was softer than GMC, we can’t expect to do better next year with Lovie and GMC softly leading the way.

    Buccaneer football= #KillingMeSoftly

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    813bucboi Says :

“players like jameis and kwon are rookies that display the type of character lovie has…poise, passionate, aggressive, tough and smart”

    Those are Lovie Smith traits?

With all due respect sir. You should not be allowed to think, let alone post.

Passionate? With that dazed look on Lovie’s face all game long? Aggressive? Tough?

    WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???????????????????????

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    SteveK…read Largo’s post. I was joking….

You know if I was getting millions to post on this site (feel free by the way Joe), I’d be absurdly professional and emotionally dead. But the players are paid millions of dollars to play, so to expect them to be professionals and mentally strong isn’t asking much is it? Different expectation levels basically.

  42. poor glennon Says:

Nothing wrong with having fun. Winning is fun. Look at how much fun the Panthers are having this year. So if you play for the Buc’s or have played for the Buc’s. You simply have not had much fun. Their is always turmoil with a loser. Us fans and the media all become Sherlock Homes. The thousands of opinions and finger pointing. Effect the weak. What do you want McCoy to do. Start calling out players and coaches. Like “We could do allot better with a QB that can complete at least 60% of his passes”. 50-59% passer’s just don’t win in the NFL. I think calling out Americas QB or any other players or coaches. Would make him a cancer in the locker room.

  43. LargoBuc Says:

Ill tell you 87. I never bought into the crap about Mccoys sacks being inferior dur to them not taking place at a certain point of the game. I think several dt’s would be considered “weak” by that logic. But in stl, after the drive Jameis was hit helmet to helmet, kinda late, and only Jameis and Evsns are there to size up Donald aafter some trash talk and and no flag im thinking ok our defense has our guys back, they got to want to beat the brakes out of Kennum on the next drive, not just letting them get away with punking our qb. And our defense does NOTHING! WE LET CASE FREAKING KEENUM PUNK THEM!!! WE CANT BREATHE ON THE GUY! Keenum should have been marked after that but our defense, that showed they are just a bunch of pu$ies who dont give af! You let them punk our freaking qb!?! And Gmc is the “leader” or so he says. And that just pised me off seeing a total lack of guts. No pride no balls. And then you get comments like this. I dont hate Mccoy, but this is bull sit. He shouldnt feel comfortable taking up a roster spot after that.

  44. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

How can anyone blame McCoy’s mentality on Lovie? The dude gets man when is position coach calls him out. This guy has played under 3 regimes. He had Brian Cox and Keith Millard. He wants everyone to be happy out there. Football is just a game it’s not live of death. As Mr Brooks says, good defenses have the mentality to fight for every blade of grass.

  45. Couch Fan Says:

Im not defending GMC. Most know Im not a big fan of his. Highly over rated but never thought of him as mentally weak. You say “how can you blame it on Lovie?”

Well thats easy. GMC is not the only one who’s picked up this same attitude. LVD earlier in the season said pretty much the exact same thing about a penalty on the 1st play of the game. When multiple people are saying the same thing, clearly it comes from the HC!!

Hold Lovie accountable for pete’s sake! Not everything is on the players.

  46. what? Says:

    Freaking loser.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

Warren Sapp is my FAVORITE Buc player of ALL TIME!

No I don’t expect McCoy to put up Sapp-like numbers.

When the Bucs let Sapp go to the Raiders, I was good with it. Why? Because his mouth was not matching his play anymore.

How many times in the last 3 years have we heard McCoy say this and that all week long only to not show up on Sunday’s? Is it in the double digits or is it in the triple digits?

  48. Patrick in VA Says:

What’s important is that Poor Glennon had fun writing his post. It’s not about whether the post makes any sense or whether it’s condoning a weak mindset that has carried this team to numerous miserable seasons. As long as you had fun writing it then that’s what it’s all about.

  49. Buccfan37 Says:

Safe to say that there is enough blame to spread around for the entire Bucs bungle show put forward.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

Patrick in VA….as he polishes his participation trophy. lol

  51. GhostofSchiano Says:

At some point one must get mad, angry, pi$$ed at LOSING. (See a Bucs fan for an example) I just want to see that displayed on the field. But instead we get stupid penalties (frustration – stupidity – maturity or all 3) I want to see McCoy make a clean hit on the qb and talka little trash, I want to see McCoy rally this defense “Like a pack of wild dogs” (LT-1986). The last thing I want to hear (After shelling out $200 for a Sunday at RJS) is the Captain of the defense telling the team “Lets have fun”.

  52. GhostofSchiano Says:

Question: Will the Bucs ever experience a defensive line tandem like Sapp and Rice? or will it be musical chairs at defensive end and softy McCoy forever?

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

GMC could have been speaking about certain defensive players. It’s no secret that the defense has a lot of quitters on it. That’s why we need a defensive draft!

I still say we need more picks in this draft.

  54. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

    @ Couch Fan,

Lovie is lies to the media and the fans. He has made his share of mistakes both in personnel and in-game decisions. I’m just tired of people acting as if he sits in conver 2 all day and don’t make adjustments. We have seen these guys fall apart when things does wrong and lay down. How many leads has this team blown in the past 3 years?

McCoy learned the game from Stylez G. White, which is football is all about having fun. The only year this dude has won in the league, he admitted that it was not a fun year for him. As a fan that 10-6 team was fun to watch, they made mistakes but they were aggressive. This team makes aggressiveness mistake like jumping offsides and holding in critical situations.

Yes I do blame Lovie for a lot of sh/t but the dumb things McCoy has been saying all year has been p1ssing me off. It’s almost as he has been trying undermine the teams progression all year.

  55. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

This team makes un-aggressive mistake like jumping offsides and holding in critical situations.

  56. BrianBucs Says:

Instances like that are what happens when you have too much young leadership on your team and not enough veteren leadership

  57. tnew Says:

I will say I am a big GMC fan…but his attitude especially this season is just troubling. Are his stats good, I would say no. Yes he has 8.5 sacks this season, and that is generally a good number for an interior lineman. But when you look at things like tackles (32, ranked 362 in league and 11th on the team) and qb pressures, which I think is more important than sacks, (12, 83rd in league, team lead), the picture is not quite as pretty.

His highlights are great, but he needs more of that for his contract. Speaking of which, the way his contract is structured, we can’t cut him this year as 9 mil of dead money is still out there, but after next season that drops to 1.5 mil. 2016 is a contract year, he needs to get that memo

  58. tnew Says:

defense needs a dog on the DLine

  59. Couch Fan Says:

I cant dispute any of that. Early in the season I would of thought you were just trying to hate on him but from what I’ve seen since, something is definately off with him.

  60. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m with Bucrightoff and GMC. Anybody who has watched the Bucs the past five years knew the game was over when that Gholston TO was overturned. And let’s face it…it was a HUGE penalty..we take it in for the score…lead 14-0 at half and come out with the dagger drive that makes it 21-0…how the game should have gone.

And so I see two issues here. First…the stupid freaking penalties, drops and other mistakes at critical times…whether it’s LVD hitting a Jet a hair out of bounds at the end of a game to lose the contest…not being able to count to eleven and taking a game changing penalty…how many illegal formation or shifts? Are those on Lovie or Koetter. The stupidity on this team goes all the way around from young guys like ASJ to older guys like GMC. When’s it going to end. It predates Lovie and even predates Schiano…this team has always been a rag tag bunch of undisciplined dolts.

Maybe we as fans and the media need to join in with a HUGE VERY LOUD CHORUS of shame for the players for being dullards and losers. It’s not bad enough to lose the games but you have to embarrass us with your stupidity and lack of discipline as well? As one Buc fan I’ve had enough!

I’m tired of “firing” coaches…whining about owners….PLAYERS!!! I’M RANTING AT YOU!!! I’M A BUCS FAN AND I’VE HAD ENOUGH!!! GET YOUR FREAKING HEADS OUT OF YOUR ARSES…NOW!!!!!

  61. Buc1987 Says:

    SPBF…don’t let the door hitcha.

  62. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

This team needs to start instilling fear into their opponents, and that means by whatever it takes you win and never give up! Someone knocks you in the mouth you get back up and keep fighting. This team especially on defense tends to lay down and stay down. That needs to change, and starts with the coach making them run suicides until they can learn to go all 5 quarters. That’s the reality of football and what it takes to be good.

  63. Buc1987 Says:

Meaning you don’t HAVE to BE a fan…

I’ve grown accustomed to being sick and tired of it all.

  64. Buc1987 Says:

SPBF…I’ve pondered showing up to a game with a sign that reads : All 53 of you SUCK!

  65. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

    @ Brian

BINGO building through the draft BS that started under Raheem and Dominik. First it was the purge then they let Cadillac and Ruud go after the 10-6 year when they had the money to re-sign them. Since then it has been all downhill with no veteran leadership. Cadi and Ruud weren’t great, but they were good transitional leaders within the organization. Cadi play on 3rd down was an asset to the offense, and Ruud made a lot of adjustments and in-game call for the defense.

  66. SteveK Says:

    SPBF,

The game wasn’t over when Verner got penalized on the Gholston INT…. IF the game was over, then why was there another half of football to be played?

These guys are not tough mentally. They are personally okay with folding up the tent, mailing it in, and worst of all ACCEPTING LOSING.

I miss Greg Schiano coaching this team. He may not have been a “great” game day coach, nor was he a nice, easy-going figure, but that sumb!tch played to the very last whistle.

I miss seeing a less talented team, with a QB gone bat sh!t, a MRSA outbreak, and a HOF CB…

All Lovie has done is let this team get worse, softer, and okay with losing.

    FIRE (Lovie!) the CANNONS!

  67. J Says:

Idiots. Drop McCoy and you’ll see just what they can’t do without him. No more triple teams for Kwon to benefit from. They’ll just ru. Up the gut on us all day.

  68. unbelievable Says:

With the exception of the the last 2 years draft picks, the players on this team just have the softest, weakest mentality I’ve ever seen. it’s absolutely pathetic!

I am not a GMC basher / troll by any means. I think the guy is really talented, and could be elite if his play got just a little better and more consistent. But man, that attitude is just pathetic!

The number of times this year we’ve heard him, LVD, and other players on defense talking about how 1 single play took them out of the game is just pathetic! You play in the NFL. Your job is go out there and hit other freakishly huge athletes on every damn play! You’re that physically tough, but that mentally weak? I just don’t get it. This whole team needs an inferno lit under their soft a$$es!

JW, D. Smith, Ali Marpet, Kwon, Sims, (and maybe Mike Evans) are the only ones who don’t seem to have this weak, loser mentality flowing through them.

  69. unbelievable Says:

You can add Doug Martin to that short list too, the dude has been playing out of his mind this year, even when the oline hasn’t given him much.

  70. Ray Rice Says:

Aunt Geraldine doesn’t want a SB ring. He’s content with getting a participation medal. What a waste. MF they should rip the “C” patch off your chest.

  71. Buc1987 Says:

“Idiots. Drop McCoy and you’ll see just what they can’t do without him. No more triple teams for Kwon to benefit from. They’ll just ru. Up the gut on us all day.”

Ummm we’ve seen this D play just as good with him or without him and that’s a fact.

  72. BrianBucs Says:

    I agree with SteveK

Since Lovie has been the head coach here, the team has gotten softer, mentally and physically

  73. Buccfan37 Says:

The league needs to cut the players salaries to correspond with reality. A hard fought game does not need these overpriced prima donnas. Bust the union! Stop the madness!

  74. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

GMC needs to shut up, stop trying to fake act like a leader with that ‘let’s have some fuuuuun’ crap, & follow Jameis’ lead & be mentally tough.

Jameis is a lion & McCoy is a care bear. STFU, McCoy

  75. godzilla13 Says:

McCoy is telling it like it is. There is an embedded mentality on this team that when things go wrong, especially when big plays get reversed due to a penalty, this team is going to lose. Case in point, the game where Donovan Smith had a holding penalty on the first play when Vincent Jackson had a 35 yard pass completion reversed. The team never recovered. It sounds to me that McCoy is in that same mind set. With the score now 14-13 and the offense getting the ball back, it did not matter. In his mind and I am sure the minds of other teammates, the outcome of the game was predetermined from the play earlier in the game. Yes, it sucks but ignoring it exists is ignorance.
