Gerald McCoy talks Panthers

The NFL always has been a flavor-of-the-month league.

This is one reason Joe is cheering for the Steelers to win the AFC.

Gerald McCoy also is watching what’s going on around the NFL. He talked today about how the Bucs should start emulating their biggest division rival.

Winning now, per McCoy, is key for next season.

“Carolina did the exact same thing. They finished last season strong, and look at where they’re at now,” McCoy said. “We could take a lesson from them. You always have something to play for.”

Yes, the Panthers were rancid last year before rallying to win their final four games of the season and the NFC South title. They even beat the Cardinals in the playoffs before bowing out of the postseason to Seattle.

These games do matter. A well-coached, well-focused team would put out a strong showing.

The Bucs had a really easy finish and could have finished ridiculously strong with 4 wins in a row and a playoff berth. Instead they’ve played two stinkers in a row when they had meaningful games to play. I’d be looking to avoid an 0-4 finish more than anything.

Two things our team are not…..thanks Lovie

    It’s sad to say this:

But this team has a very long ways to go

The NFL is a copycat league for sure…..but you gotta MAKE YOUR OWN SUCCESS…….that is the mentality the bucs need right now.

  4. Wombat Says:

Just got my game day email from the Bucs. 30% of #83 and #22 jerseys…. Not saying, just saying… Maybe merchandising doesn’t want a heap of these jerseys left at the end of the year lol

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

That makes at least two of us cheering on the Steelers to take the AFC champ title.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Keep in mind…..Panther fans wanted to run Ron Rivera out of town a couple of years ago….and they had a losing record last year…..things can change quickly.

The lesson that really should be learned is that with a great QB and good defense (or vice-versa) ….all things are possible…..we are well on our way to half that formula.

  7. cmurda Says:

    @TBBF,

I agree. The problem is the operative word you used, “half”. I believe in JW but we need to hit on at least 1 DE and 1 CB to have a shot at having a good defense. Right now the defense is decent at best, a far cry from yesteryear in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

  8. jb Says:

Problem is…..we are NOT a well coached team.

  9. godzilla13 Says:

For the Buccaneers defense to even be considered “decent” you need an entire secondary and two DE’s. The problem as I see it is that there just is not enough quality draft picks (1 thru 4) and quality FA available to fill all the holes the Buccaneers have, in one year. The stinking Panthers have it all. Offense, defense, a franchise QB and an increadible coach. Not to mention the key to it all, they know how to draft. In 2011 it was Cam. In 2012 they picked up Luke Kuechly and Josh Norman in the 5th. They had a great 2014 draft bringing home four starters. They also picked up TE Greg Olsen in FA. Players like Olsen are few and far between. Still, it took the Panthers all of five years to reach this point. Oh..yea, they are 24th in penalties, we are 1st.

Like you said Godzilla, it took 5 years for the panthers to really get their team together. That’s why it is so premature to pull the plug on Lovie Smith. It takes time, and sometimes a long time to get the right players in. Sure Lovie brought in his old pals to fill some holes, but they were never intended to be the future of this team. They were here to help the defense adjust and play more like a unit, while slowly adding the talent that will lead this team into the future. 1 defensive draft pick in 2 seasons. And people think Lovie’s defense is set and ready to go? You build a foundation through the draft. You patch the drywall with free agents. Lovie has barely touched his defense, because he knows a good offense is what is going to win us more games. This is an offensive league now. But now that we have the offense mostly settled, he can concentrate a little more on the defense. You gotta expect us to get a DE with our first pick. It is our obvious most desperate need on this team.

    I think Wombat meant “30% off, #83 and #22 jerseys…

I hate to be the spell Nazi, but it changes the meaning of the post

    Merry Xmas

I agree with Godzilla and Trubucfan. Gawd, this team was 2-14 last season. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a winning NFL team. The Bucs have a a very powerful young offense They have never had that before. It needs time to mature, Lovie now can concentrate on the defense. That will be in the off-season for some of the mentally challenged on here. We will win the next 2 games. GO MIGHTY BUCS!!
