Sapp Has Issued McCoy Orders

November 12th, 2015

warren sapp 0202bNo. 99, iconic Hall of Famer Warren Sapp, is making demands of Gerald McCoy.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night, McCoy explained that his recent poor play has been a focus of his chats with Sapp.

Now McCoy wouldn’t name Sapp directly, but McCoy did do everything he could to imply that it was Sapp without mentioning his name. He referred to his mentor as a guy who played for the Bucs, a close friend and a guy with a gold jacket. Host TJ Rives played along and said he’ll pretend it might not be Sapp, and the two laughed.

What’s important is McCoy said Sapp’s words are weighing heavily on him this week.

“He told me, simple as this: ‘Get back to the basics. Get back to who you are. And do what makes you you.’ You know, that’s been sitting with me very heavy over the past couple of days,” McCoy said. “I mean, it’s simple as that, man. Don’t do so much thinking. Don’t worry about this; don’t worry about that. Forget the injury. Forget the double teams. Whatever the excuses are, can’t think about them. Get back to the basics and play your game.”

Joe’s glad to hear Sapp is still counseling McCoy and studying his Bucs film. (McCoy went on to mention Sapp by name and discuss his communication styles.) It’s also interesting to hear McCoy acknowledge that his head hasn’t been properly focused.

If that’s all McCoy needs to right himself, a simple back-to-basics approach, then we all might just see a very dangerous disruptive No. 93 Sunday against the Cowboys.

Joe can’t wait to read your piece at the beginning of next year prior to the pre-season where we learn that McCoy has rededicated himself to football and is predicting a big year for 2016, ala Eric Curry, Kenyatta Walker etc. Is anyone else tired of hearing McCoy talk? Let your actions speak, stop talking about what your not doing or going to do to change it and start letting your actions speak for themselves.

Get off the ball and cause disruptions, and demand your line-mates to meet you at the QB.

  3. BucTrooper Says:

The next Bucs who says “it’s as simple as that” needs to get punched in the throat. If it’s so simple, DO IT. don’t spend 6 years figuring it out.

  4. tmaxcon Says:

sapp needs to be back on TV… Screw the PC police he was entertaining and much more football intelligent than some of the talking heads on now. There are a few ex players on NFL network with worse legal records than Sapp they were just lucky enough to there issues were in an era that did not have social media. Could you imagine some of those Michael Irvin incidents on youtube or twitter.

  5. bucrightoff Says:

McCoy likely does absolutely nothing this week. Not even necessarily his fault, but if the average Giants OLine handled him easily, the best OLine in the league in the Cowboys likely will as well.

  6. DooshLaRue Says:

Surprised Sapp didn’t share his technique for fighting off double teams with Ol’ Softie 93. ala smakin’ dem 2 hoes be axin fo mo money….know what I’m sayin? Sit man.

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

Sapp is a real-life villain who dis-respects others as part of his mantra…..he did the community a favor by moving out of town.

  8. Tampa Tony Says:

Best offensive line in the league will run him over. One on one matchups will take place as well

  9. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

tmaxcon I agree he should be back on tv, hopefully he was humbled, but people on bspn are idiots, like teddy bruschi come on

Mccoy shut up and play, you work for 16 weeks get your lunch pail and go to work play like your head is on fire and you are playing a friggin game, that few are able to do and the window is small, you think a soldier wants to be in afghanistan in the hot/cold desert, no but they kick butt and do their job for peanuts and you are paid like a kind for 16 weeks stop making excuses and play like a maniac

  10. The Buc Realist Says:

I agree with Tmaxxon!!!! At the time when he was fired, I said that showtime or HBO should have swooped in, And sign the QB killa to 2 year deal for peanutes. The show would have been an anything goes sports show with Sapp. for example -He could interview (escorts) to educate proper negotiations and expectations, sports reviews and real talk with guests!!! think of the “man-show” on steroids!!!!

Ballz out with the Qb Killa, would have been the highest rated show in a matter of months!!!

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

Sapp is a bad boy, remember he smoked weed that caused his draft status to fall. If the Bucs were all stoned I believe they would play better. Weed brings out the best in athletic expression.

McCoy said. “I mean, it’s simple as that, man. Don’t do so much thinking. Don’t worry about this; don’t worry about that. Forget the injury. Forget the double teams. Whatever the excuses are, can’t think about them. Get back to the basics and play your game.”

Forget the injury? Everyone knows he got injured, but no one seems to know how much it’s affecting GMC’s play. First time that I’ve heard him indicate that it’s still affecting him, even though it seems to show in his play. He may be trying to compensate for his shoulder hurting (or whatever) and that could well be causing him to change his rush techniques. But like GMC says, he just needs to get back to the basics and play his game.

  13. Curse of Gruden Says:

Sapp had better not be telling JW where the best strip clubs are.

  14. Clodhopper Says:

I grown to loathe the phrase simple as that.

  15. JMN Says:

Yeah McCoy is going to get worked this weekend against arguably the best O line in football.

  16. Couch Fan Says:

If he hasent been focusing on football what has he been focusing on?…

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    Realist

Ballz out with the Qb Killa

Great Title… It sets up nice segment labeled Tea Bag of the week for dumbest sports figure or boneheaded coaching decision.

  18. Lovies Basement Says:

Balls In or Balls Out GMC, just turn up the heat for gods sake…

  19. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

They don’t come more simple than Lovie Dovey. Simple as that!

  20. dreambig Says:

Seems like GMC and LVD are a not real mentally strong. David has made a few eye raising comments like that first penalty against the titans took the air out of the defense, now GMC is having mental confidence issues. No wonder there is no real leadership on the D. Common guys! suck it up and just go kick some a%s.

  21. dreambig Says:

I despise the very air that Suh breaths because he is such a low life dirty slime ball but maybe I am wrong. Maybe we do need some bad boys to toughen those guys up.

  22. White Tiger Says:

I’d love to defend this cat – but the thing that has me scratching my head and second-guessing all this chatter: The GMAC has NFL strength, plenty of experience, and supposedly in the right alignment…there are only two things that could result in Buc fans concluding that GMAC is performing below his capabilities:

    – Could be that we don’t have the necessary edge-rush that a Tampa-2 defense requires to generate a pass rush with the four d-linemen, so we’re using them to stop the only thing we CAN stop – the run game. There is some evidence to support that idea because Bucs are one of the best teams in the NFL at stopping the run the past few weeks. Again, I’m not sure if we’re focusing on stopping the run because we needed to do so to win, or because we couldn’t do anything else – but we are one of the best teams in the NFL at stopping the run these past few weeks.

    – Could be that although GMAC has all the tools to play Under Tackle in a 4/3 Tampa-2 – maybe he prefers a different defensive alignment?. I say this because I remember a troubling comment by Pat Kirwin after finishing a pre-draft interview with McCoy. I don’t remember the exact exchange, but when Kirwan asked McCoy to describe the role he LIKED playing MOST in the multiple fronts that the Oklahoma defense played his final season. Pat said McCoy’s answers seemed to indicate he’d be a better fit in a 3/4 alignment…

Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
