Sage Mankins Says “Patient” Defines Doug Martin
November 25th, 2015Eleven-year veteran left guard Logan Mankins, a six-time Pro Bowler, has had plenty of running backs churning behind him through New England’s many years of revolving running backs.
Mankins even had Doug Martin, Bobby Rainey and Charles Sims getting lots of carries with him in Tampa last season.
So Mankins has studied plenty of ball carriers. Last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Mankins explained what makes Martin stand out.
“The thing he’s doing right now he’s being very patient,” Mankins said. “Some of those plays, if he just puts his head down and runs in there, he’d get two, three, four yards. But he’s getting into the line, giving us time to stay on our blocks, move people. And then he’s hitting that little crease that comes, he’s exploding into that little crease, and when he hits the other side he’s going full speed and it’s hard for guys to get him. And he’s breaking a lot of tackles. That’s the thing. Guys aren’t getting him down with just an arm.”
Mankins added that Martin’s prowess and ability keeps the line from feeling it has to be perfect.
“That gives us a world of confidence that we just stay on our guy, run our feet, and Dougie’s going to get through there.”
Mankins also revealed that it was Bill Belicheat that regularly told his team that “real football season starts on Thanksgiving.”
That’s a good standard for Martin. He’s been great, but he has to sustain his strong season till the end.

He’ll have 1,200-1,400 by seasons end, unless he gets injured or the line regresses. He’s gonna get PAAAAAAAIIIIIIIID!!!

“The season doesn’t really start until November” -Lovie.
Sound familiar?

Mankins is very correct. And it’s very obvious. There were plays against the Eagles where it looked as if he was almost walking up to the line of scrimmage

Martin may get caught on a long scamper yet his explosion through the holes is nothing short of exhilarating.

@Joe Cool – it is a reasonable statement when you are staying in games with regularity and at least within a game or two of .500 when october ends. it is a silly denial of reality when your football team is a doormat that has two wins, one of which (@PIT) was the football equivalent a lottery ticket
