QBs Complete 71.1 Percent Against Buccaneers

The Final Four

Let’s pick the most mind-numbing Buccaneers statistic.

Four quality options are available.

1) The Bucs are on pace to break the NFL record for most penalties in a season.

2) Opposing quarterbacks complete 71.1 percent of throws against Tampa Bay.

3) The Bucs have allowed 17 touchdowns through the air in seven games.

4) Bucs cornerbacks have zero interceptions this season.

Joe’s really quite stumped. They’re all downright ghastly. Right now, Joe’s leaning toward No. 3. That’s a huge number, and one that reflects the team’s inability to clamp down defensively.

#4 is in the drivers seat hands down… A few picks here and there get the team out of penalty situation later in drive OR simply becomes a pick vs a PI.

Obviously the QB rating drops along with the amount of TDs….

Other then a free agent is there any other way to bring some bodies in to check out/tryout??? Just wondering….

My thinking is the D line might pull and OLine and suddenly get better with a starter going down…. If that happens we can make a run for real but will seriously need some help in the secondary….

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

@Joe, How can the Bucs ever compete with the 4th best head coach in the division???

  3. tmaxcon Says:

I am torn between 2 and 3 myself with a completion percentage that high the TD’s are bound to come. bucs rush defense ranking is very skewed because it’s so easy to throw on them too… Got to go with 2 then I guess.

Poor game day coaching needs to be on that list but I guess you can’t really measure it statistically but it has definitely cost team several wins.

    @joe

Where is option #5 where Lovie gets next year and we complain about options 1-4 all over again????

    Obviously there are the sub-stages:
    1a) Drinking
    2a) Drinking
    3a) Drinking
    4a) Drinking

  7. CC Says:

Lovie’s bend but don’t break philosophy is not working. The D has not figured out the don’t break part of the equation.

  8. CC Says:

Joe…heres another stat to add and make it Fantasy 5. Passes defended.
Jenkins leads Bucs defensive backs with 4. That ranks #68 in the league. Kwon leads the team with 7. Pathetic.

  9. OneLove Says:

#3 is an ALARMING statistic! Especially considering the list of QB’s we have played so far! I think we can all get past blaming the scheme, because the defense has been mixing up zone/man to man coverages A LOT more and blitzing A LOT MORE this year to help our lack of a pass rush! It just comes down to EXACTLY what Lovie has said OVER AND OVER in his press conferences!! These PLAYERS are not winning their 1v1 battles!! These players are put into a POSITION TO SUCCEED and are FAILING to EXECUTE! WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH PLAYERS TO DOUBLE TEAM EVERYONE ON OFFENSE! Even if we did(given the current talent), i’m still not sure that will be enough!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith

“Changing coaches about halfway through a rebuilding effort is a recipe for perpetual failure.” – Johnny “America’s Commenter” Dejay

“If Lovie don’t no how to coach so be it… Hard to believe he would get a job offer and you wouldn’t…. Wonder why??? Your idiots that’s why…” – JAB83

“So my advice would be, yes, it’s okay to throw things at your TV when your team has a monumental collapse like the Bucs did on Sunday in Washington. But take a deep breath and understand that it is only going to get worse if you continue to jump from one coach to the next.” – Peter King

I have to go with the 71% completion rate when you realize that this is not all West coast dink and dunk that is getting completed, some of it are the long b gainers and those 17 ****ing tD passes. I am willing to bet the completion rate in the 4th quarter has to be higher too Joe as is the completion rating on 3rd down where the Bucs simply act like “ned Beatty in deliverance” anytime they are holding a lead late and face a 3rd and long….. Frustrating joe, it is amazing the Bucs are 3-4 considering how bad the D is; if Lovie was not the DC and someone else was calling the plays I bet the Glazers would have did what Indy just did with their OC after the colts gone 3-5; they fired him for general ineptitude even when special teams obviously cost them the pats game not the offense (I guess Love could blame O’Dea for the Texan loss for that matter as well as the DC onside fiasco, but lovie did sign off on Brinzda and O’dea so all the Ls do point back to him or his D)….. On the bright side; 3-4 is better than what many of us would have predicted after the Titan fiasco to start the season, hopefully the Bucs manage to get to that mark of 6 wins that Joe feels will save Lovie, if he can win 6 with this D you can’t fire him as HC; just make him fire the whole defensive staff and have them take O’Dea with them for general incompetence as well!

  12. rjhurst813 Says:

If the d-line can get pressure, then the incomplete passes and interceptions will come. For the first time in forever, this team has the ability to build a lead. The d-line should be pinning their ears back and getting after the QB. It no excuses to not get pressure in obvious passing situations.

McCoy its OK to play mad sometimes, we need you to lead with your play on the field. I am a believer in this scheme, but the 3-technique has to be the engine. If he is not, the entire defense will suffer.

Also, the LB’s has to stop biting on run-fakes, counters, and read-option plays. LVD is always out of position. Bend don’t break, play your assignments, force 3rd-and-long, rush the passer, and get off the field. It is as simple as that.

  13. Spynole Says:

We should trade Verner and our 1st round 2017 pick to Baltimore for their 2016 1st round pick, and then draft both Ramsey and Hargreaves with our two 1st round picks.

  14. TAC Says:

Number 3. They cannot allow the TD’s. I can live with the bend don’t break, but dammit, make the tackle during those bends, or at least be in a position to make the tackle. Especially the LB’s not named Kwon.

Stripping a player of the ball is great, and that play by Kwon from behind Jones was amazing, but there are many times 2 or 3 yards are gained while some are trying to strip the ball. Just make the tackle.

It is baffling, and there is a disconnect between the players, and Coaches.

  15. Tampa Tony Says:

Penalties, reflects on the lack of team discipline and that falls on the coach. Penalties keep drives alive for the other team, negate big plays, negate turnovers and kill offensive drives.

It’s been a constant issue for Loser Lovie and there is no end in sight

  16. TAC Says:

Penalties did lose that Redskin game.

  17. bucrightoff Says:

Worst secondary in NFL history? Very possible. And to think we thought the 2012 pass defense was bad. Pretty soon we’ll be begging for it back.

  18. Waterboy Says:

Can’t wait to add a few more draft picks to the defense and get rid of the retreads.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Ironically we’ve actually started some games really well breaking our slow start routine. But then we get ahead and go into a conservative mind set…Lovie!!..and so of course other QB’s pick us apart during those comebacks.

And so I’m not quite as concerned although they ARE alarming about the totality of the numbers…they’re inflated “somewhat” by our “prevent nothing” defense hanging on to significant leads.

What upsets me is the FINAL drives by the other team. We’ve had a chance to close out games and there is no excuse for not keeping ANY lead in the last few minutes.

This is why Atlanta was so satisfying to me. No we weren’t world beaters but we finally found a way to WIN!!! Just basic stuff but exactly what we need. #3 comes out with a long OT drive…several dramatic 3rd down completions and we get a FG. This time the D was strong enough to make it hold up. Impressive in on Sunday.

  20. LargoSamIM Says:

I’ve strongly been thinking lately that the main problem with the DBs is OVER-COACHING ! (well, we could use more talent too). But, think about it for a minute – it is obvious – even to the most casual fan – that the pass coverage just sucks. So you know it is obvious to the coaches, too. Now, its a well accepted axiom that players (esp. def players) who “think too much” don’t play as fast and can hesitate. I say, put them in the right alignments (a coaching issue), quit emphasizing the details – and let them play ! We can sort ou the performances later.

  21. DB55 Says:

Yea but Lovie is doing a great job with “his” offense, lol,

  22. Tampa Tony Says:

If the Giants win that means Tom Coughlin will have more wins at Ray Jay than Loser Lovie does as a Bucs coach

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

Thus far, teams have completed 16 red zone TD’s against us. Not good. You can bet Mann9ing is going to be..gunning us down unless we can get some interceptions or pass breakups. 2 in a row would really be nice. But lets face it, our Bucs usually come out flat after a victory. Offense will score 20 to 30 pts. Might not be enough against the Giants. Yes Buc Defense..the bombs will be flying your way this Sunday. No doubt about it. Lets see if Lovie’s Defense can get a reprieve this week.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Getting in late on this one Joe, but none of the choices offered concern me nearly as much as this one … TOTAL POINTS ALLOWED. Bucs have allowed 199 points in 7 games … OVER 28 points a game average. Considering that in two of our games we held the Texans and Saints to 19 pts each, that means we allowed OVER 32 pts a game average in the other 5 games. Obviously not SB material with a defense allowing over 4 TDs a game average.

Experienced coaches like Lovie, Frazier, Cullen, Nickerson, Byrd, and Smith aren’t stupid (contrary to what many fans and media seem to feel). And neither are the Bucs players; they didn’t make it to the NFL by being dummies. I see them trying some different things on defense, but I just don’t think that they have the personnel on defense to make anything work consistently. Our DEs obviously aren’t getting the job done, and without pressure any QB in the NFL can pick a defense apart all day long. Our CBs and Safeties are adequate most of the time, but that’s about all. They’re all taking turns getting burned. Looks to me like our LBs are trying to compensate for both (front and back) and that’s no way to play defense because it limits your aggressiveness.

Bottom line to me is that we just don’t have the horses on defense right now. Schiano likely saw the same thing in his 2 years, and opted for a bunch of stunts and some blitzes. Sometimes it worked, often it didn’t. Lovie and Leslie have taken a more conservative approach, and that isn’t working either. The Budwieser beer wagon wasn’t meant to be pulled by a bunch of ponies … it takes Clydesdales.

    @Defense Rules

As always a well thought out post and I largely agree.

I always get nervous about stats especially when they are as conflicting as our D stats. Again though many of those points are the responsibility of #3’s learning curve…the pick 6’s…fumbles giving the other team easy TD’s or chip shot FG’s pervert our stats a bit.

But #3 seems to have corrected his mistakes and the D is finally rounding into shape. Still I have the same question as you about talent level.

I do have one complaint about how Lovie is dealing with this. When the talent can’t get the job done you have to get creative and you have to GAMBLE on D.
We have the most vanilla blitzing of any team in the league. With our DB’s we should rush freaking 8 because if the QB has time to pass it’s going to be a completion! At least 70% of the time.
