McCoy Names His Three Underappreciated Bucs

November 5th, 2015

McCoy mugGerald McCoy was put on the spot last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

During his weekly Total Access show, McCoy fields a lot of fan questions and comments. One asked for his take on the most underrated/underappreciated Bucs.

McCoy paused in thought and said, “Three.” Co-host T.J. Rives quickly jumped in and wanted to know why McCoy thought Jameis Winston, who wears No. 3, was that guy.

McCoy corrected him in a hurry and said he was about to identify three Bucs: defensive tackle Clinton McDonald, safety Chris Conte and the offensive line.

To summarize, McDonald is such a leader and a consistent on-field performer and off-field presence, per McCoy, and players respect McDonald’s rise from starting with the Bengals, getting cut, earning a Super Bowl ring as a key member of the Seahawks.

On Conte, McCoy seemed blown away by how hard the guy practices every play, and how on point he is within the defense.

On the offensive line, McCoy said Jameis, Mike Evans and Doug Martin have performed fantastically well, but McCoy is convinced none of those guys are anything this year without the offensive line, which McCoy believes has matured very quickly into one of the best in the NFL.

who would’ve thunk. the offensive line is halfway decent. Maybe Jameis has something to do with that. ? Just saying

Jameis has a whole lot to do with that but that o Line has been among the top 10. Much better than halfway decent. I never expected this line to gel so quickly. we all know that Marpet has been a beast but let’s not forget about the rookie playing the most important position on the line. D Smith has been fantastic. he’s got a mean streak that I love and for his size his movement is above average. I think Mankins has been the glue. He is a great leader as we all know but he’s also leading by example having a great year on the field. I’m very pleased with this team on the whole but my favorite part is what this offense is capable of doing. I’ll be the first to admit that I have called for Lovie’s head especially after the Skins debacle but having to find a new coach doesn’t do us any good. Dirk has made this offense light years better. 3 weeks ago I would have predicted a 2 TD or more loss to the Giants but now I predict a Bucs win. The Giants defense is soft and we are capable of hanging in a shootout. Our defense has been the question mark. If they can continue to improve particularly on the line and secondary then we can become a formidable team.

Conte is on point within the defense? Might want to see the Julio TD again Geraldine. There he goes again hating on THE MESSIAH. He’s too worried about #3 taking over the locker room. TOO LATE 93.

    mcdonald is a big loss.

@Ray Rice….your reading comprehension is below a second grader if you got that McCoy was hating on Winston in that article. Try, just for once, actually reading the article. Maybe S-L-O-W-L-Y so you can take it all in.

agree on Conte. I’m not sure what everyone else is seeing, but his play makes me nauseous. He bit that play fake HARD on the Julio TD. I went back n watched the Washington game and he was beat up! He’s a serviceable backup, but speaks volumes that he starts.

As far as McCoy, I can’t listen to his radio show. He’s Michael Strahan-ish…

….on a totally unrelated note, I’m glad we got Winston to build our team culture around.

If Chris Conte was a only a serviceable back-up and sucking as bad as some people make out on this site, why would McCoy mention him as being one of the three most underrated players? Sure he bit on the Julio play, heck Kwon and LVD bite on almost every play. Yes, McCoy is blown away at how hard he practices and on point with their defense he is and Conte still gets no respect. No one seems to notice all the tackles he makes and all the receptions he prevents and that he plays “smash mouth” football on every play. Chris, keep doing what you do, your great.

  8. Matt Cavallo Says:

Ray Rice, to put it mildly, you’re a moron. But you already knew that…. you’re entire argument is based on one play of chris conte. Yes, he bit. That play was specifically designed for HIM to bite, and he did, like many players would have. Jonathan Banks on the other hand, shouldn’t have been covering the pylon so hard, because a pylon does not have hands…. people like you make me proud of where I am today.

DJ SWEARINGER PUT THE GUY IN ALREADY

Conte is one tough dude! Leads the team in solo tackles and is always in the play. Fast and smart. And plays smashmouth ball! Totally agree he is underappreciated.
