“I Really Almost Peed My Pants”

Center Joe Hawley speaks

It’s always fun to hear a Bucs offensive lineman admit to raw fear and restless sleep.

That was the case with starting center Joe Hawley on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night.

Hawley was asked a simple question by a fan. “What’s it like playing against Gerald McCoy?” And Hawley, the former Falcons center, gave a raw answer that could earn him a Depend For Men endorsement.

“He was definitely one of those guys who gives you nightmares before the game,” Hawley said of McCoy. “He’s a matchup nightmare, one of the best players I’ve ever gone against. We played here a couple of years ago, and I was playing center and they would run a 5-down look, and put him on the nose 1-on-1 with me. And I really almost peed my pants.

“Because he’s a very good pass rusher and he’s very hard to stop. He’s huge, fast, he’s the whole package. Having him on our team, I’ve learned that he’s a great leader, too. He’s a great guy, and he’s definitely one of the cornerstones of this team.

And this is why opposing teams game plan around McCoy.

Interesting nugget, Hawley said his toughest opposition this season was Kawann Short, the rising, young Panthers defensive tackle, a second-round steal in the 2013 NFL Draft. Short was NFC Defensive Player of the Month in October.

Sure as hellll didn’t look like a problem for the ATL offensive line every time he played against them.

  2. Waterboy Says:

    Interesting perspective.

  3. godzilla13 Says:

If one lineman has set the tone for who this OL emulates, it should be Joe “Brawley” Hawley. Who would have thought we would have a OL with the nickname “Brawley”? He is always straight up and tells it like it is. It is interesting to hear someones point of view from a former opposing player on who was the “best ever” that he has faced. Hawley also referred to GMC as a “leader”. Brawley has definitely rubbed of some on Ali Marpet. The ultimate compliment for McCoy, is that opposing teams game plan around you. A Band of Brothers.

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Another nugget that goes against what GMC haters like Ray Rice want to believe. Notice how he wasn’t baited into the leadership statement – he just made it. I dare you Ray Rice to tell me McCoy wasn’t doubled on every pass play on Sunday. I watched the game 3 times (I get a bit obsessed when we get a win). Please try to tell me he wasn’t. I really want you to ignorance your ignorance.

  5. Jbeachbuc Says:

Come on Hawaiian, don’t you know ” fans ” like Ray Rice know a hell of a lot more than actual NFL players !!!

NFL players and coaches, PFFFFFT!! What do they know compared to us fans .
    😜

  6. "The kevin" Says:

Ray rice is an absolute idiot. And so is anyone else who thinks McCoy isn’t doubled and tripled teamed ALL THE TIME. Just a bunch of food stamp collecting idiots. Go pressure wash your trailer and eat some Beenie weenies you moron. People like ray rice shouldn’t even be allowed to watch football.

  7. Hawaiian Buc Says:

He isn’t always doubled. They don’t double him when they run away from him. He isn’t always doubled when the run a bootleg. They don’t always double him on a 3 step drop or a quick release from shotgun. Other than that, he never sees single coverage. But again, that doesn’t fit the narrative. First, the narrative was he was always hurt. Then he played 16 games, made the pro-bowl, and 1st team all pro. Then the narrative was he couldn’t do it consistently. Then he made an other all-pro team and 2 more pro bowls. Then they said he couldn’t made a play late in the game. He then went out and had 2 sacks on the final drive against JAX, and the game winning play against Atlanta. Now it’s that he doesn’t dominate a game like they want him to. People are upset because he’s not Warren Sapp. The players around him aren’t in the same ballpark as what Sapp played with. More importantly, the game has changed so much over the year. A 7 step drop used to be the most common drop just 10 years ago. Now, some teams don’t even have use a 7 step drop at all. The ball is designed to get out quick to avoid these freakish pass rushers. They are able to run more quick slants now, because you can’t hit the WR without getting a penalty and a fine. But I’m just going to stop there, because simple things like facts aren’t going to change the mind of the haters. I’m going to let them come up with their next narrative.

  8. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I really like the way this team is headed. If there is any negative it’s that the Panthers Falcons are also improving rapidly.

The NFC South could be the tough division in 2016.

  9. DB55 Says:

I’d love to see these double/triple teams you speak of, can you post the times ie 1st qrt 6:34. If it’s not too much trouble. Facts are greatly appreciated.

  10. Bucit88 Says:

@Hawaiianbuc u are absolutely right could not agree even more wit that statement smh bucs fans were never happy we always want more

  11. BraveBuc Says:

    @Hawaiian Buc

Very well said! I agree 100%.

We have a lot more important things to worry about than GMC.

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DB55,

Don’t go anywhere, my comment is awaiting moderation. I’ve got lots of detail on specific plays for you. You’ll love it.

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DB55,
I’m going to try to break it down into small parts. We’ll see if that can avoid the “moderation” thing.

  14. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DB55,

How about I go first series? First play, quick screen to Julio. Single blocker. Second play, 5 step drop, single blocker, McCoy blows the guard up on a bull rush and pushes him into Ryan’s arm, causing an incompletion. Third play, draw, doubled by the center and guard. 4th play, shotgun, doubled by the left tackle and left guard. Out of the game for the 5th and 6th play. 7th play(playing 5 technique), run off tackle, doubled by left tackle and guard. 8th play, 7 step drop, doubled by center and left guard.9th play, 5 step drop, doubled by right guard and right tackle, with a chip from the center. (they had 2 tackles on his side on this play).

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Nope, not working

  16. DB55 Says:

Weird! I post times all the time. Oh well I guess I’ll just take your word for it.

  17. Hawaiian Buc Says:

(I’m going to try to take out a couple words that maybe the filters don’t like)

How about I go first series? First play, quick screen to #11. Single blocker. Second play, 5 step drop, single blocker, 93 blows the guard up on a bull rush and pushes him into QB’s arm, causing an incompletion. I just can’t fix stupid. Maybe you should watch the game because obviously you didn’t.

    Lol what a moron.

People like you with your utter ignorance warrant no response because you don’t have the brain capacity to understand it. Lol

  19. DB55 Says:

I’ll check it out again tonight HB, thanks.

  20. DB55 Says:

    Kev

I’m not fit to breathe your air brother. Thanks for the post, someday I will be as smart as you.

  21. Bobby Says:

DB55…..is it too much to ask you to do your own homework?? Everybody else who actually watches the game know that McCoy is constantly double teamed. You want to accuse McCoy and seem to have no evidence to back up your claims. That’s why people think you’re a fool. It’s fine to have opposing points of view if you have facts to back your side but you have squat.

  22. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    (continued)

9th play, single blocker, chopped by right guard, play ran outside to the left. McCoy got in on the tackle. 10 play, doubled by center and left guard on a run up the middle. 11th play, QB sneak. Hard to see who blocked who. 12th play, run to outside left, McCoy mostly single blocked by the right guard, with a little help from the right tackle. 13th play, offsides on #56, center and guard double McCoy on a 5 step drop. 14th play, single block by right guard, run up the middle for no gain. 15th play, 5 step drop, McCoy doubled by center and right guard, and eventually the right tackle.

So is that good enough for you? Would you like to re-watch the game and argue any of those points? Or are you going to make excuses and want more examples? Or are you just going to pretend you don’t see this and disappear?

  23. Ray Rice Says:

LMFAO. Man I think we’ve had this conversation plenty of times. It’s never going to end. I see things different than you. And you see things different than me. I have different standards than you. I expect the whole team to ball out. But I expect more from the captain. That’s part of wearing that “C” patch. At the end of the day all I want is for the YUCS to win.

(((((((“He needs to be dominating the game,” Arians said, via Bob Baum of the Associated Press. “He got very close, but he loses his technique sometimes and doesn’t use his hands. He should have had a four-sack day. His stats were minimal.”))))))
    J
That’s the Cardinals head coach calling out his man beast captain DL Calais Campbell. Accountability and expectations. Think for a minute. Let it marinate.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Ray Rice,

Believe it or not, I have high expectations too. But I also have realistic ones. It seems like you want him to dominate a game like JJ Watt. Problem is, he doesn’t play the same position as JJ Watt, and I will admit he’s probably not as good. Watt is one of the greatest defensive players of all time, any era. Is McCoy more dominant than Suh? I think so. Certainly the stats back that up. How many games has Suh won with a late game sack?

Bottom line no defensive tackle, or DE for that matter, is going to win games for his team. Not in this era of offense. Games are won on defense by the entire unit. We had one of the greets CB’s of all time, but couldn’t win because of the lack of talent around him. One, two, or even 3 defenders doesn’t make a defense. Teams are so good offensively that they will pick on the weak links, and we have a ton of those.

    HB

You know I’m with Ray Ray on this one. Plus, I really enjoy clowning on the PFUDR.

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DB55,

There’s a right side and a wrong side. You’re obviously on the wrong side of this debate. You asked for specific facts, I gave it to you. You guys keep saying he’s not getting doubled, I keep saying he is. Then I went and watched the game again and gave you a play by play. Not sure what else you would need. I haven’t seen any gmc hater do the same. Of course, that’s because they can’t.

  28. DB55 Says:

I will, I’ll check it out tonight when I get home. I’m just having a little fun with you that’s all.

  29. DB55 Says:

Btw HB I do this all the time.

Just a few notes from Sunday’s game:

    2nd qrt 7:45
McCoy misses int(doesn’t even bother to go for the Int), play goes for 7 yard gain.

    2nd qrt 1:54
McCoy misses sack bounces right off of cousins chest. Pass complete to Reed for 5y.

    2nd qrt 1:42 – 4th&2
Gmc is blocked 1vs1, leaves gap, makes half a$$ attempt at swatting the ball (better to defend the gap and jump up to block the pass). Pass caught for a first down.

In all fairness the deadskins double teamed him more than any other team I’ve seen in the last two years.

  30. "TheKevin" Says:

Wow you managed to find 3 whole plays. Lmao pathetic

  31. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m really upset he missed an INT. He should hit the Jugs machine! He must suck because he’s not the next Revis.

  32. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I also notice you don’t notate whether it was a 3 step drop or a 5 step drop, or even a 7 step drop. Was it in shotgun? That makes a difference.

I did, however, go back and watch the game you were referencing. 7:45 – You are right, he’s not very good in coverage. He should probably stick to being a 3 technique.

1:54. Yes he missed a sack. He absolutely destroyed the double team on a bull rush. Made the guard fall down, almost into the QB. Cousins made an inaccurate throw that the TE mad a nice catch.

1:42 Whatever you are looking at, you are wrong. He was absolutely double teamed from the start of the play to the finish. At no point in the play did he not have 2 guys blocking him, except for when he threw the guard down. Nice try though, but if you know me, you would know I will call someone on their BS. I’m not the guy to just let stuff go. I have a rule, when you make stuff up, you lose credibility. You, my friend have lost credibility.

  33. Hawaiian Buc Says:

If you are talking about the play after the one I was talking about, that was out of shotgun with a quick release. Not sure what the hell you are talking about with his gap (how would you even know his gap responsibility?), but maybe you expect him to pick that off too. I think he should perhaps return punts and kick extra points too. That seems to be the expectations.

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Once again, first part of my comment is awaiting moderation. I think I’m dropping way too much knowledge

  35. DB55 Says:

7:45 – the TE is literally on the LOS he doesn’t have to be Revis. He hits the TE at the 41 and gets dragged 5 yards to the 46. But that’s okay bc he’s not Revis.

1:54 – your eyes are going bad bro cuz that’s a RB that he’s throwing into the QB. But you have to get that sack.

1:42 – I think your looking at the 3rd down play. Look at the 4&2 play.

Either way you’re right I’m wrong Gerald is all world. As for my expectations I’ll just leave this right here for you … https://mobile.twitter.com/ChrisWesseling/status/646198922097094656

  36. Hawaiian Buc Says:

1:54, You are absolutely right, it was the RB. I didn’t catch it because the RB immediately went to GMC. The play was designed to have the RB block McCoy. I doubt that was called again.

So you are showing me one play, where Robert Quinn collapsed the pocket and Donald got the sack? Has McCoy ever done that? I’m pretty sure he has. I’m pretty sure he’s done it without the pocket being collapsed. I wasn’t aware Donald was able to do that every play. Man, he must be the greatest to ever play the game. I wish we had that guy. Robert Quinn is so lucky to have him.

  37. DB55 Says:

    HB

I think your eyes are going bad bro.

7th play(playing 5 technique), run off tackle, doubled by left tackle and guard – that’s Spence not McCoy, lol.

14th play, single block by right guard, run up the middle for no gain. – you forgot to mention he missed the arm tackle.

See the problem is that when a guard engages and pushed him off to a tackle that’s a double team. Or if he engages a center and the guard reaches over a put his right hand on him for 2 seconds before moving on to his guy that’s a double team. I still haven’t seen a triple team. I for one call it a double team when 4 shoulders are pressed against you, that’s a true double team. New England was doing it to Suh all game. But nevertheless when you are ALL-WORLD making 100 mil and a Captain you MUST beat double teams AND make the play, you just have to.

listen, if 2 solo tackles in the last 2 games is good for you then it’s good for me. Lol, not really.

  38. DB55 Says:

    I’m under moderation…

  39. DB55 Says:

. I wish we had that guy.

    Finally we agree, lmao.

  40. Ray Rice Says:

Aaron Donald is a stud. I gues all three of us agree. Lmfao

  41. Ray Rice Says:
