“I Am Not A Huge Fan Of Gerald McCoy”
November 5th, 2015The ex-Buccaneer arrows keep on flying at Gerald McCoy, the best player by a mile on the Bucs’ defensive line.
One of three quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to the NFC title game, Shaun King hopped on WDAE-AM 620 today and was pressed to give his raw opinion of McCoy.
“This is where I’m at with Gerald McCoy. I think I’ve been here the entire time. I am not a huge fan of Gerald McCoy,” King said. “At the same time, I understand why the organization, and some of the guys who really have an affinity for him, I understand why they have it.
“But that’s not the type of dominant defensive tackle that I grew up around. And I’ve never said I want him to be Sapp. I’ve never said that. But I would rather that guy have more of an aggressive alpha-male mentality than what Gerald has.”
King, now of Yahoo! Sports, also said McCoy is “a really good player” and admitted he’s “criticized by former teammates” for comparing McCoy to Sapp. King agrees that he does that on some level because, “Who else should I look to?” citing McCoy’s big salary and voice.
Man, McCoy is one polarizing dude. It’s not enough that McCoy makes the opposition wet themselves.
Joe suspects that if Michael Bennett was still here, one of McCoy’s best friends, the perception of McCoy would be more universally positive.
There’s plenty of good stuff in this 620wdae.com audio from King, including a look at how Eli Manning will attack the Bucs’ cornerbacks. King believes the Tampa Bay defense must up its physicality and find a way to stay in the game, because Manning has a propensity to self-destruct late in games.

Now all the GMC haters are going to side with Shaun King, the same guy who they have been dismissing his opinions for years. Of course, 99% of the people who are going to comment are too lazy to actually listen to the audio and apply context. They will just use snippets to fit their agenda.
November 5th, 2015 at 3:07 pm
I think it’s a bit of over-hype to proclaim that McCoy makes guys “wet themselves”……..that’s reserved for Hall of Famers like the late Reggie White and players of that calibre…..
November 5th, 2015 at 3:07 pm
@bucrightoff,
Ha ha, I saw “revered” buccaneer and I was expecting maybe Alstott, Rice, or John Lynch. King was not the guy I was expecting, lol.
November 5th, 2015 at 3:11 pm
HB…me too. lol
November 5th, 2015 at 3:14 pm
Take note I’m not one of those typical GMC bashers. Sure I’ve had a little bit of a problem with him being paid Sapp-like money when he’s 1/4 of what Sapp was as a DT. Outside of that until I see a better DT on this team, I can’t bash him at all. Hell the whole D only has what 4-5 decent players. 3 of which are still very young. LVD, Kwon and Banks.
November 5th, 2015 at 3:18 pm
Who cares about Shaun King?
November 5th, 2015 at 3:19 pm
Love shaun kings analysis of the team because he is a fan and has been since day one and the bucs are his team, and I feel the same way about GMC, I wonder though if there was another coach in here running things would it not change the way GMC carries himself and seems to appear that winning or losing is not that big a deal to him…..FIRE LOVIE
November 5th, 2015 at 3:22 pm
Been out the loop awhile. But where my homie Realist!!! at?
November 5th, 2015 at 3:25 pm
I like Shaun King as an analyst but every time I hear him talk about another player I’m reminded of when Warrick Dunn criticized him on the Jim Rome show about 14 years ago for not being prepared enough as a football player.
November 5th, 2015 at 3:27 pm
You may not be a huge fan of Gerald McCoy but you are huge. LOL
November 5th, 2015 at 3:34 pm
Its not being a “hater” to not believe in a guy. All we ever hear about McCoy are excuses for why he doesnt produce and gets shoved around by average players. He’s over rated and has always been over rated. But he’s still a good player who needs other good players to even be noticeable in most games.
November 5th, 2015 at 3:37 pm
It is actually possible to be an incredible player without being a great “leader.” I think McCoy fits that description, and really…there’s nothing wrong with that
People look to him to fill that leadership role because he’s the best player on this team and because the Bucs don’t have an outspoken leader….or at least they didn’t before #3 joined this team
McCoy will be fine. He needs a partner in crime on the DL to take advantage of his double and triple teams, but the guy is an outstanding player and is going to be a huge part of what we do on defense for years to come. Ain’t a damn thing wrong with that in my opinion…
November 5th, 2015 at 3:39 pm
Joe’s why aren’t my comments showing up? The site keeps saying that my comments are being blocked because they’re spam. Some may say comments are spit, but I don’t think they could be described as spam
November 5th, 2015 at 3:39 pm
My sentiments exactly Shaun…. Not hating on Gerald, just play like a D-lineman, gets some nasty, not dirty or illegal, just NASTY!!!!! The guy can be a legend, he is getting called out by his peers, not for his play, just his demeanour.
November 5th, 2015 at 3:39 pm
The Bucs getting a win at home will be freaking HUGE!
November 5th, 2015 at 3:43 pm
BucFan..ofensively I think the bucs are capable of scoring 28 points this week…but have no faith that we can’t hold eli and co under 28 and sullivan is probably a little motivated to hang a few points on the bucs for his buddy schiano
November 5th, 2015 at 3:53 pm
This site works like a charm from my point with a 7 year old phone. I can’t get the non youtube videos, but otherwise it’s clear sailing.
November 5th, 2015 at 3:56 pm
Shaun King needed Sapp….could have used Mean Joe Green, Reggie White, Deacon Jones, Bruce Smith, Leroy Selmon, Alan Page, Carl Eller & JJ Watt….
and still couldn’t have gotten the job done.
“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 9 points.”
November 5th, 2015 at 3:59 pm
Polarizing dude???? Makes opposition wet themselves???? Dude joe your delusional and maybe that’s what McCoy makes you do with your love for an average DT …lmao man how did you get your media pass…thank god you don’t work for BSPN …you would be laughed at
The “wet themselves” link is a story with a direct quote from Bucs center Joe Hawley, who explained that he was afraid he would “pee my pants” the time he was matched up 1-on-1 with McCoy while playing for the Falcons. McCoy is highly polarizing. (Perhaps you don’t know what the word means?) That’s just fact, widely known. Carry on. –Joe
November 5th, 2015 at 4:00 pm
Two questions:
Is Gerald McCoy less effective because our defensive ends are ineffective in getting sacks?
Is he hurt and can’t say it?
November 5th, 2015 at 4:11 pm
Speaking for Pablo
“Pablo is also no fan of GMC…..Pablo table dances at night after working on hot Pasco County roofs all day. Pablo has yet to see GMC show up…..so no tips from GMC for Pablo. Pablo is thankful that 87 is a big tipper….87 makes up for the Realist who is very stingy”
November 5th, 2015 at 4:18 pm
@bob…I would say both…one player that I know will help him out on the inside is a.spence…kid is a beast and it showed last week…GO BUCS!!!
November 5th, 2015 at 4:20 pm
Was refreshing to not see Adrian Clayborn get to Jameis. Maybe the rookies had something to do with that?
November 5th, 2015 at 4:21 pm
Gerald is merely a good player that is it. He makes his occasional plays here and there and at the end of the year he will have his 8-9 sacks. He just isn’t great nor dominant. Why is this even debatable? The defense has sucked since he has been here. You mean to tell me McCoy has been here 6 years which means he has played with 100-150 defensive players and not one of those defenders are worth a darn? He could not elevate one of those players? Great players do that. Jameis has been here 7 games and you already see his impact. Look no further than last week when he was down 3 of his top 4 pass catchers and he still looked like a seasoned veteran throwing to the greatness of Cameron Brate and Humphries. Stop making excuses for McCoy not having anybody to play with. He is simply a good player and not great period. It is simple as that.
November 5th, 2015 at 4:33 pm
When did Shaun King become revered? Thanks for the laughs Joes

You didn’t hear Simeon Rice interview last week.
November 5th, 2015 at 4:46 pm
GMC would start for every other NFL team……we can’t really say that for many Bucs.
The guy is good….very good….for some great…..he plays hard….sure he makes a ton of money……so did Michael Johnson.
November 5th, 2015 at 4:47 pm
Revered Bucs
Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, Barber, Kelly, Rice, Gruber, Selmon, Johnson(brad), grammatical, alstott and Dunn
November 5th, 2015 at 4:49 pm
Tiny Tim
I concur. And for the amount of money he gets paid, he should be doing a lot more. Not necessarily sacks but more pressure, more tackles, more defections, something. He disappears for games at a time. Great players don’t. Kwon has been here how many games? Look what he is doing as well. Production and being consistent with production is what makes a player great. GMC just doesn’t produce…often.
Ppl shouldn’t expect him to be a leader. It’s not him, and that’s OK. If he was, he would’ve have handed Qwon the game ball. I know Mankins is a vet but Mccoy has been on the team longer. Jameis is the leader, it’s natural to him. And GMC is just a good role player, and that’s fine too.
November 5th, 2015 at 4:55 pm
You people are idiots. Sorry, but you are.
McCoy is awesome.
You do not need to be an azzzzjole on the football field to be good. That is what most of you seem to want. Brooks was mr nice guy too. Doesn’t matter. What matters is production. The guy pressures the QB more than any other DT and has more sacks at DT than anyone the last few years.
You all expect him to have 12+ sacks a year with no help from anyone else on the line for years.
If had a DE worth a damn he would have 10+ sacks a year easily.
November 5th, 2015 at 4:58 pm
McCoy is a good player, not great, but very good. I like him but I can be down on him like a lot of others in here. I think we have a lower opinion of him because we all saw Sapp in his heyday. He may not be Sapp, but we could do a lot worse. If he had a Pro Bowl DE next to him, I could see a 15 sack season from McCoy.
November 5th, 2015 at 5:25 pm
Yes, the fans are absolutely clueless. They always know more than the players. Problem is they know nothing….truly just plain idiots with the things that end up being posted. I would be embarrassed to exhibit such a lack of football knowledge but it seems to be a badge of honor for a lot of people posting on here. There is no denying the GMC is one of the best DT’s in the NFL. The players consistently talk about him in that light but of course the Buc fans know better because he doesn’t have Warren Sapp numbers and he helps people up after he tackles them. Yeah…..great analysis guys.
November 5th, 2015 at 5:47 pm
Gerald McCoy is soft. There I said what we’re all thinking. We can’t afford to pay players like him and David what we are paying them, for what we’re getting in return. It just can’t happen. Something has to change. And soon.
November 5th, 2015 at 5:48 pm
To all you know it all posters that say fans are idiots because they feel McCoy is not nasty or help people up…… bite me. Look at my post. I never once said that is why he is not great. I know the difference between good and great. I have said it before, DeAndre Jordan for the clippers got a max contract and his peers say he is good and one of the better centers today. But please do not confuse that with Chamberlain, Jabbar, Shaq or Olajuwan. All those centers were the main guy and it was evident every night. DeAndre Jordan is not the main guy because he is not great period and McCoy is not a great either. Yes he is good, but not great. Its not even debatable. Some of you buc fans are so use to losing and accepting mediocrity you have no idea what great or even good is anymore. I mean we actually have fans who wanted to give glennon a chance as if you could not tell he was just a back up at this time. It is so evident that Winston is much better than glennon right now, but some of you wanted Glennon to continue to play. Why? Because some of you accept mediocrity and are happy with it.
November 5th, 2015 at 6:08 pm
We’ve been losers since GMC has been here.
Polarizing comment?
Maybe.
November 5th, 2015 at 6:19 pm
I can’t stand king. I couldn’t stand his as our QB and I can’t stand him now. He wasn’t half the player McCoy is
November 5th, 2015 at 6:23 pm
I don’t like the way he gives interviews poor body language
November 5th, 2015 at 6:58 pm
MAN I LOVE IT WHEN JOE THUMPS THESE TROLLS IN THE BALL SACK!!!!! LMAO
November 5th, 2015 at 7:42 pm
I am not kidding but why do we even worry about McCoy anymore when we know what we have? He is a slightly above average DT but he is paid like he’s elite and there less the problem. He has done nothing to be noted in this league other get drafted high and get some sacks in meaningless games at meaningless times. I hope for each week each play even for him to show something really special and each week I am left waiting. I am tired of waiting.
November 5th, 2015 at 8:08 pm
I bet King would miss McCoy a lot more if he were playing elsewhere. I’m so sick of hearing from King—one good run, the guy had ONE GOOD RUN.
SHUT UP ALREADY!
November 5th, 2015 at 8:23 pm
He won’t say that to McCoy’s face. That’s for sure
November 5th, 2015 at 8:40 pm
No need to wet your self mccoy is a nice guy he will wet you himself if you need it
November 5th, 2015 at 8:43 pm
GMC has a loser attitude see his body language at coin toss like damn why didnt we lose in regulation (laugh inserted ) were not idiots you Delusional ones are just in denial what do you guys do but give the guy a break for a injury he does not have ? He takes plays off and him on the sidelines makes no negative impact AT ALL brooks ,lynch barber hardy had a nice guy switch you see what they do is turn it off when they walk on the field

What an idiot. McCoy is one of the most dominant players when healthy. He sucks because he rarely is healthy. He’s fierce on the field, wtf alpha mentality?!

People discount a lot of the things Ian Beckles and Shaun King have said over the years bc its often negative. But it’s been a bad football organization for over a decade… so what exactly (aside from Ian on Martin) have they been wrong about?
November 6th, 2015 at 10:06 am
Mike you are spot on, and for Ian who played OL and that is usally a position that very successful coaches come from, he knows a lot about the little things that make pro football player be successful…i value what they both say and they also hear around town…ian knows alot about the bucs and does not share everything on his show
November 6th, 2015 at 10:58 am
LeeRoy Selmon was not a mean man yet we have a highway here in Tampa named for him. He was a GREAT player.
You do not have to be a loudmouth like Sapp, or a dirty player to be great!
So I dismiss King’s criticism on that front completely.
However I understand why GMC is so polarizing. He’s been the face of the franchise up until this year on a LOSING team!!! A team with a defense that seems to be lacking in pride in years past.
I think the real argument is not whether GMC is polarizing…just read this thread…that’s a fact. It’s not whether he good…look at his sack totals this year without the supposed required DE. He’s obviously a very “good” player…and an all pro. But if you are the face of the franchise…and a top draft pick..folks simply want more!!!
Who would you rather have at DT…Geno Atkins or GMC? Atkins has 6 sacks the highest of any DT and tied for 6th. GMC is not far behind.
Atkins flourished with Michael the Ghost playing DE alongside of him…and btw Johnson flourished as well. GMC did not.
But it’s all opinion up till now. Until GMC dominates or can at least LEAD a defense to some playoff wins I do not want to hear talk of GMC’s greatness.
Up until now he’s been a very good but not great player. He’s reached the prime of his career with good linebacking behind him and an improving DL around him. The next three years will tell us a lot about GMC’s place in NFL history.
November 6th, 2015 at 11:02 am
While people are complaining about GMac’s posture in OT, it was the same GMac who beat his double team and was hanging on Matt Ryan’s legs at the end of the game.
I don’t care if GMac is not a rah-rah guy. He’s a perennial pro-bowler and HIS PEERS consistently vote him as the best DT in the league.
November 6th, 2015 at 7:08 pm
I am honestly shocked, flummoxed even, that there is no derisive mention of ‘Aunt Geraldine’ on this thread. I always get a kick out of that particular snide.
Bama Rich though, he is sage: (To Shaun King) “You may not be a huge fan of Gerald McCoy but you are huge.” I almost died.
