“You Got To Wear That Number Right”

Bucs defensive end Jacquies Smith, the team’s reigning sack master, has more than the weight of the Bucs’ pass rush on his shoulders.

Smith also has No. 56 sitting there, a number some Bucs fans think should be retired.

Of course, that was the number of the Bucs’ linebackers coach and five-time Pro Bowler for Tampa Bay, Hardy Nickerson.

Smith told the Buccaneers Radio Network this week that he learned about Nickerson’s legacy within hours of his arrival to Tampa in September of last year. One guy delivering the message was Nickerson.

“I remember when I first got here. We was walking out to practice, and [Nickerson] was like, ‘You know, you got to wear that number right,'” Smith said.

“Hardy’s so calm outside the field. So I really had to go back. I went to YouTube and watched some of Hardy Nickerson’s field. He’s intense as ever.

“He was so intense on the field, man. It was great to see. After I watched it, we had meetings in the morning and I whispered to him. ‘I checked out some your film. You don’t have to be so calm in these meetings and stuff like you are. I know exactly who you are.’ He chuckled and laughed.”

Fun stuff, and it’s always great to see young Bucs learning and respecting their history.

Joe suspects this was one of the videos Smith watched. It really picks up after one minute.

Ahh man, the days when men were men and football was played by tough guys. Any chance we can play this on loop in the lockerroom? I know at least one DT that could use some more “bad a$$” on Sunday’s.

Just don’t let Jameis watch this or he’ll want to go down and cover kickoffs. Why does Jameis keep trying to block for his RBs?

Man, now I want to play some ball. Who’s down to play some flag FB tomorrow? Come on don’t be shy.

  2. Bobby Says:

DB55 you are so predictable with your lame attacks on McCoy every time you get a chance. LOL! It would be one thing if he wasn’t leading all DT’s in the league in sacks but unfortunately for you…..he is. You need to find another poster boy to pick on cause this just makes you look flat out stupid. I don’t know, maybe that’s how you want to appear. If so….mission accomplished. Suh has a mean streak and look at his stats this year. I thought he was your boy because we all know that stats mean nothing… it’s all about attitude. Forget accomplishments, if you don’t accomplish with an attitude it means nothing right? Ha! Ha! : ) Stick with flag football son. That’s your game.

  3. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

DB55, is that a serious inquiry about flag football tmrw bcuz I’ll meet up somewhere if we can get some people involved…. I’m in St Pete, but I will drive to pretty much any central location in Tampa Bay. And I call QB for one side lol

  4. DB55 Says:

Luv you too bobby. You know I’ll never pass up a chance to tag on the ice cream man. In my own stupid head I think my taunting has has fired him up to play better, HA!

I’m down for some flag FB if anyone else is down we can meet at Al Lopez park tom at 1p. Let’s see how many more want to play we need at least 10 people.

@DB55 … “Ahh man, the days when men were men and football was played by tough guys.”

Seriously? Would have slid by if you hadn’t followed it up with ‘Who’s down to play some FLAG football?’

Ah yes, the good old days when men were men and carried flags tucked into their belts instead of beating the crap out of their opponents like our DTs have to every play.

  6. LargoBuc Says:

Im all about some flag football

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Unfortunate we live in a “PC” culture these days.

  8. DB55 Says:

    Defenserules

I’ll play tackle but I doubt anyone else would. I’d put money on that fact that you won’t even play madden much less flag. But hey put your name down and put your money where your mouth is…

  9. DB55 Says:

We got 3, anyone else? Don’t be shy.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

Me and my brothers and others loved to play pickup flag football anywhere we could find an open patch of grass big enough. A lot of fun then, those were the days, but too old now to run past a semi fast walk. Still have leg and knee injuries from that action. Man it was fun!

  11. DB55 Says:

    Lmao @ 37. True story!

  12. DefenseRules Says:

DB55 … Grew up playing tackle football, a lot of it without pads by the way. Also played a bunch of flag football in the military, against some pretty tough hombres. But hey, those days have gone by. Not really interested in Madden or fantasy football … much more interesting ways to spend my free time. And that includes watching my favorite teams (Bucs and Bama and USF) play some real football.

  13. DB55 Says:

I learned how to play football in the south Bronx. We played tackle on the streets. If you got slammed up against a car you were out-of-bounds.

Don’t be skerd defenserules, after I run you over I’ll let you help me up and pat my butt. After the game I’ll buy you some ice cream. You can’t pass that up. Lol

  14. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

THE GOOD NEWS IS WE WILL NOT LOSE THIS WEEK!!!!!!! LMFAO xD

  15. unbelievable Says:

^^ gotta love people acting tough in the comments of a blog.

Great video joe! Damn I wanna see our linebackers play like that! Ferocious!

  16. BucsShip Says:

Jimmy Graham may be traded for a 4th or 5th rounder.

  17. DB55 Says:

You guys take yourselves too seriously. Smile man, it’s a beautiful day outside.

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

USF wins at UConn, this team is finally showing some improvement. Go Bulls! Some tough games left at Navy, at ECU, Temple and Cincinnati at home, sandwiched between SMU at home and at UCF, the latter two should be wins. Wins against the other 4 will be a battle.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

We used to play 2 hand touch on the pavement. Lots of times kids would 2 hand touch a little too hard and you’d eat it on the concrete. It was up north so we’d usually have pants and long sleeve shirts on so the pavement was no big deal. Lot’s of times we played in the snow too.

Ahhh the video Hardy Nickerson was a baaaad man. Bad man for Pitt too. Seeing and hearing Mazio Royster running into the end zone brought back some memories. Talk about a forgotten name. I forgot all about that guy.

Hardy Nickerson he’s very dangerous and often angry:

  20. Buc1987 Says:

DB…I’m much too old for that now young man…I’d get hurt just running routes alone.

  21. DB55 Says:

My man, they don’t know about the struggle. “Timeout car coming” or “no wait do over a car was coming”. Lol

Truth be told (today) I’d probably run out of breathe jogging from the huddle to the LOS. Lmao

  22. chipbuc Says:

Kevin Butler, what a douche he was, he always thought he was better than he really was. Noticed he didnt mouth off when Hardy called him out!!!!!

  23. dcommand Says:

We could really use that defensive intensity. I believe Jameis will bring his form of intensity on offense.
