That’s Mr. Howard Jones
October 11th, 2015When it comes to defensive linemen walking the streets, the Bucs’ scouting department has found some gold nuggets in the dirt.
Today, undrafted in 2014 Howard Jones, seeing his first NFL action out of Division II Shepherd University, just promoted from the Bucs’ practice squad, had two sacks of Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles in Tampa Bay’s big home win.
Joe can’t confirm, but word around the Bucs’ locker room was that Jones had those sacks on his first two plays of the game. The first sack came in the opening series, Bortles’ first dropback of the game.
Jones was on the Steelers’ practice squad last year, and the Bucs scooped him up in September.
Soft spoken Jones didn’t have much to say in the locker room, and said he’s just been trying to fit in with his new teammates and answer the bell when he gets a chance.
Coach just said, “Go play fast.” So I played fast,” Jones said.
Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David praised Jones so how hard he’s been working on the scout team. The Bucs’ offensive linemen want no part of him, McCoy said.
Last year, the Bucs snatched Jacquies Smith of the waiver wire in September, and he’s responded with 10.5 sacks and earned a starting job.
Joe’s not sure what lies ahead for Jones, but his start was damn promising.

No One Is To Blame
You can see the summit but you can’t reach it
It’s the last piece of the puzzle but you just can’t make it fit
Doctor says you’re cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
– Howard Jones

Two sacks against the Jags… basically two sacks in a minor league football game today.
He will nary be heard from again, mark my words.

Howard Jones has the look of a player who will put to rest Lovie and Licht’s releasing of DE Ryan Delaire. At the 2014 NFL Combine, Jones was the top performer in four out of six categories for DE. The 40 yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump and three cone drill. NFL.com scouting report says – Lean, explosive, muscular build with long arms. Intriguing athleticism. Outstanding straight-line speed and leaping ability. Explosive edge burst. Displays good balance, body control and agility as a rusher. Dips inside suddenly. Closes fast and shows striking ability. Flashes power potential. Rushing linebacker prospect who overwhelmed inferior tackles at the Division II level and has clear developmental value and upside potential. Best deployed with pinned ears and see-ball, get-ball instructions. Welcome to the Buccaneers!

Yeah I remembered him from the combine . I thought he was covert coachable. He had 2 sacks today . On the d line you don’t really need elite skills with some of these other guys , just need too be big athletic and have a knack for hitting people . The rest comes easy . That’s what he did today let his guys get the hurried and when the opportunity came too him he flashed past and dominated the QB . Great job too the front 7 today . It’s a team sport the team will get more sacks and do greater things when they work together and feed off each other

4.6 speed. As fast as some WR’s. That’s impressive.
