Simeon Rice had tough talk for the Bucs’ high-paid defensive players

Iconic former Buccaneers defensive end Simeon Rice, the last man to record 10 sacks in a Tampa Bay uniform (14 in 2005), watched the Bucs-Redskins game and came away with some very direct takes.

First, Rice said, “We need a pass rush.”

Rice was disturbed that Kirk Cousins was “very unbothered in his approach to the game. Little distraction, little disturbance, being able to throw the pill all over the field.”

He called the Bucs “immature,” evident by letting the Redskins back in the game. That cuts to players and coaches. “Taking your foot off the gas kind of hurts you,” Rice said.

The man who had 67.5 sacks in his first five Bucs seasons said fans shouldn’t hang the loss all on coaches.

“Don’t get it twisted. Players can call audibles, too,” Rice said. He went on to reference his personal changing of plays and mentioned Derrick Brooks.

As for Gerald McCoy, Rice called him a great player who “wants it,” but said the description can’t go beyond that because McCoy hasn’t proven himself to be a winner.

Rice made the great point that players paid huge dollars must step up in crunch time. Per Rice, anyone can rack up stats “in moments when it’s not as competitive.” Key spots in games, he said, is when everyone on the field buckles down, and that’s when stars must shine and “channel that desire.”

“I don’t know if they have that player. I don’t,” Rice said of the Bucs. “That’s yet to be seen. I understand who they’ve paid, who they believe. But that’s belief based on what?”

Rice said the Bucs simply “got comfortable” with the lead and refused to “break off the neck” of the Redskins.

Outside of a select few guys on offense, there is not “dog” in this team, especially on defense.

Soft, weak, p**y-ass mentality brought on by the HC himself.

I have no problem with shaking hands after the game but during the game you better be looking to destroy the other team’s will to win. This is not chess, it’s football.

McCoy and Lavonte are becoming part of the problem now. Not good…

    Siege this!

    Go Sucs!

I could not agree more with Rice. Spot On.

Mr Rice is..Correcto Mundo!! A lack of a pass rush truly exposes our secondary with its many faults. He’s not sayin anything we do not already know or see. This team needs our offense to score at least 50 pts to win. Sad..But true. Money players step up in time of crisis. So far, only the offensive money players are steppin up.

  5. DallasBuc Says:

Wrong. We need a competent HC and DC.

  6. DB55 Says:

I thought Rice was calling McCoy out indirectly. Players with the big contracts need to make plays when it counts. Hmm sounds very familiar.

I even saw Shaun King calling McCoy out on Twitter.

On the flip side I couldn’t be more proud of Jameis, Ali and DSmith. Outstanding effort and play from these 3 and Dougie Fresh!

    We need a coach.

So Joe do you believe Rice when he says McCoy isn’t anything special?

  9. BucFan20 Says:

Exactly what Danny Lansahanna (sp) said on Fox after the Jax game. They let up. Think the game is won and over.
They get that big lead and think they don’t need points. That from LOVIE. No killer thinking.

I told my buddy at halftime that great teams come out of the locker room and not only put their boot on the throat of their opponents, they twist it

This Bucs team just doesn’t know how to win yet. They don’t even know how to play with a lead. Simple as that

  11. Supersam Says:

Listen up David and McCoy, he’s talking about you!! Can we get this guy on the coaching staff? Man I miss the good ol days.

  12. Young buc Says:

    Sign rice

He’s right, no doubt. It isn’t anything new, though, is it? We have not one, not two, but THREE high-caliber QBs in the division. It would only make sense to try and give Newton, Ryan and Brees the shortest amount of time possible to operate in the pocket. How do you achieve that? With solid pass rushers, sure, but also a good secondary, something that we totally lack. We could draft or sign the best DEs and rushing DTs ever and it wouldn’t mean a damn thing if we keep playing with scarecrows at the back. Need to fix the secondary, ASAP.

What does it matters anyway? Lovie’s defense is just a relic of the past anyway, the personnel doesn’t matter, this coach has the dreadful ability to turn good defenders into scrubs – see McCoy or Lavonte David.

I forget the original poster (credit to you), who said that GMC is the Dwight Howard of the NFL. So accurate.

  15. BFFL Says:

Most of the players on the defense just are not smart hard nosed ball players with a burning desire to win

    Albert Haynesworth?
