“Making His Tackles Look Really Bad At Times”

Jameis takes a dart

One of America’s greatest critics of Buccaneers offensive line play is in feel-good mode about the unit nowadays.

In fact, this noted analyst is directing his finger of shame at America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Joe’s talking about former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) who co-owns the Tampa Bay radio airwaves on weekdays from noon to 3 p.m. on WDAE-AM 620.

Beckles went on a rant this week about how Jameis is “making his tackles look really bad at times.” And Beckles said it’s a result of Jameis stepping sideways when he should be stepping up into the pocket. He proclaimed that’s a great way to get sacked and allow defensive ends to rub off your tackles and make plays.

Jameis says his pocket movement is improving every game, so he told media yesterday.

“The thing about playing football is sometimes you have to make that awkward throw,” Jameis said. “The main thing, like you said, fundamentally every play you try to be as technically sound as you can possibly be. I felt like, especially my footwork, I’m getting better on my footwork every week, my drops and my pocket movement. I’m improving on that, but the main focus this week and for the rest of the season is just taking care of the football.”

Jameis is growing and inconsistent — two games plus two bad games so far. The only thing that concerns Joe is Jameis has repeated some mistakes. That trend can’t continue. In all, Joe is quite pleased with the 21-year-old chosen to save the franchise from unspeakable depths.

All in due time. I think we will see a lot of improvement by the 2nd half of the season.

Soooooo……is this Jameis making Donovan look bad, or Donovan making Donovan look bad?

I hate it when a defensive end rubs off my tackle

Creamsicle, not a good example. There was a pocket there, but Winston wasn’t in it. No one can protect him when he is out of the pocket. I think Koetter needs to trust his o-line a bit and put Jameis back under center and do what he was drafted to do.
The way we are playing we picked the wrong QB. Its not Jameis, he needs to get back under center now that Evan Smith is gone. In Hawley we trust…..

  6. MadMax Says:

If Marpet wasnt there……oh the ugly. I give the rest of the O line some props, but if it wasnt for Marpet….. yeah.

“Creamsicle, not a good example. There was a pocket there, but Winston wasn’t in it.”

    Just no.

  8. Espo Says:

He had no time to step into the pocket. You can’t honestly blame the qb on that particular play.

  9. Wombat Says:

He was gone as soon as the ball snapped, count 1 mississippee 2…. Not sticking up for Donovan, but not his fault there. Thats all QB or co-ordinator, busted play at best

Yup Realist, it is fascinating how draft position and perception can skew an opinion. It’ll be interesting to analyze both QB’s body of work after a season or two and then see how things look. Remember hardly anyone here could fathom the possibility that Lovie would be a worse HC than Morris or Schiano, yet here we are going on two years later and seeing how wrong that thinking was.

Sorry…back to the tackles. I got sucked in on the tangent 🙂

I think they just look like rookies. If they are still looking bad in a couple seasons then I will say they look like busts. Too early to judge.
