Licht: Jameis Makes Dirk Koetter Feel Good

A peek inside the inner walls of One Buc Palace will spark new life for the Dirk Koetter-Marcus Mariota conspiracy theorists, and further cement the revolution nearly completed by Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback.
General Manager Jason Licht hopped on SiriusXM NFL Radio recently and was asked by former Super Bowl quarterback Rich Gannon what offensive coordinator is saying about Jameis.
Licht explained how Koetter just made a special trip to the GMs office to gush.
“Dirk came to my office the other day and he said, ‘You know, I just want to let you know that what we thought during the whole process, you and your guys here in the personnel department, who did an outstanding job, not just with Jameis, but with the entire draft, what you guys said about [Jameis] loving football, is definitely an understatement,'” Licht said.
“He’s just got so much passion for it. You know, any coach that works with a guy that has incredible passion for the game, and is incredibly smart, it’s like a dream for them. Just seeing this guy get better and better each day, that makes a coach feel good.”
Joe wonders what moved Koetter on that day in Licht’s office. And was Koetter was harboring misconceptions about Jameis during the pre-draft process?
None of that matters. Bucs fans, like Bucs officials, should be gushing about their rookie QB, who has walked the walk since arriving nearly six months ago.

Joe, I’m still waiting on your first post about the protests that are taking place outside Raymond James every week. I was promised that these protests would be taking place by certain individuals that have large microphones around…oh let’s say 3-6 pm every day, so I know that they MUST be taking place
….and yet you choose to ignore these protesters. Why? Do you hate women? Do you want to deceive your readers? Why oh why are you ignoring the outrage coming from all 4 corners of the planet and descending on Ray Jay every week?

I think it is universally agreed that that are playing about the same now. Mariota had one good game and has been spiraling down since. Last week he was really bad. Winston had a couple of bad ones but has bounced back with some good ones. So they about evened out stat wise. I am glad we have a hard working passionate player that is a natural leader!

As for any protester!!! Why treat them any different then other protesters…
Example,
Planed Parent Hood… If women cared about anything you would think they would care about doctors murdering babies in the womb… However we ignore them too…
Seriously, who cares about protesters unless your involved in one… And if you are, you should know no one cares… This is America, we only care about what we care about and everything else we don’t care about… So if you want news about the protest go join one to show you really care vs asking a sports commentary about something we don’t care about…

doesn’t look like any media outlets have covered any “protests” probably because they don’t exist LOL and i agree Mariota & Winston both have shown promise… most like to point at completion % and QB rating as to why MM is better but MM has about 2 completion over 20 yards all season and has a lot of short dink & dunk completion where JW has tried to push the ball down field more.. also Winston has the stat that really counts…more wins LOL Titans should’ve pull MM after that knee hit… kid showed a lot of guts playing thru the injury

I don’t know, the stats aren’t that far off and Winston has one more win. Take out week 1 for both players and it is Winston that is clearly outplaying Mariota, who is now injured and may not start this week. Can’t help the club when you’re in the tub.

I wish media and fans would stop with the Winston-Mariota comparisons. It might play well in Peoria, but it’s totally irrelevant.
Jameis has a LOT going for him, and he doesn’t need to be compared to others. Excellent leadership skills, especially for this point in his career. Outstanding football intelligence, excellent physical skills, and a fantastic passion for the game. Put it all together and his potential to become a seasoned ‘franchise QB’ is awesome.
But there’s a LOT of factors beyond Jameis that will ultimately determine whether that potential becomes reality. Lots of great young talent has been ruined by lousy coaching for one thing. From that aspect, Dirk Koetter is the best thing that could’ve happened to Jameis as far as I’m concerned. Dirk has an excellent track record of developing young QBs properly, and that’s critical.
How good the team around Jameis plays is also critical though. A strong OLine that can pass block helps tremendously, and our OLine is improving there rapidly it looks like. A strong running game also helps big-time, and keeps from putting Jameis into situations where all the pressure is on him to bring the team back from deep holes in the second half. Defense also plays a huge role in helping young QBs like Jameis, by getting turnovers, stopping folks so our offense gets decent field position, by shutting the other team down on 3rd downs, and most importantly, by not allowing the other guys to score a whole bunch of points so our offense isn’t always ‘playing from behind’.
No matter how folks cut it, winning and losing football games still takes a team effort. For his part, no doubt in my mind that Jameis gets that … big time.

Fans in here and a certain radio guy predicted that if the Bucs drafted Winston there would be women’s right’s groups and activist’s protesting outside of RayJay and One Buc. Us JW supporters such as CreamsicleBananaHammock scoffed at them at the time. Me I just had to laugh at the notion. Fans were trying to hit me with every angle as to why the Bucs should stay away from Jameis. I wouldn’t relent. It was a daily blog war in here for 3 months straight back then. I even ran a few of them away before the draft even took place, sorry about the Joes.

The Bucs went 4-12 in 2013. I had season tickets and had a blast at every game. If your team sucks and they’re not very fun to watch. Make your own fun!

87, I can remember you and I having a discussion pre-draft when folks were saying the Bucs wouldn’t ever draft him and that the pre-draft “vetting” process hadn’t even started yet. It was pretty clear to those of us who had been following Jameis that the vetting process would HELP not hurt him in the long run because it’s so clear that anyone who actually followed the kid and the BS surrounding him knew that it was actually BS. I still have to pinch myself at how lucky we all are as Bucs fans to have this kid as our QB for the long-term.
And Joe, THOSE are protests I would gladly join in on

All of my pre draft concerns were for the off field immaturity. #3 has clearly outgrowned his youthful indiscretions and so those are now a distant memory.
As far as on field….from the beginning this has always appeared to be an Aaron Rodgers-Brett Favre kind of style comparision. Both Rodgers and Favre are HOFers with SB trophies, both are obviously great, they both played for the Packers, but after that similarities fade…they were clearly two DIFFERENT QB’s.
This is true for #3 and #8. They are totally different QB’s but they both have strengths and weaknesses and they both possess a lot of talent. This debate will probably continue for a decade.
While I think they are both potentially great players, conceding my Buc prejudice, I have come to the conclusion that while MM can be as successful as JW he is not nearly as entertaining.
At the end of the day sports is simply entertainment. Winning is a HUGE part of that entertainment and so I suspect both MM and JW will be successful. But there can be little doubt that JW will be far more entertaining both on and off the field. And I say this as someone who both admires and respects MM…but it is what it is.

CreamsicleBananaHammock …I remember them not only spitting venom at this kid, but some fans were dumping buckets of venom on the kid. It’s the same stuff he had to deal with at FSU and he never missed a beat. Players, coaches, teachers, principals and classmates all said he was just a great kid. Believe me I looked into anything I could find on this kid. I did this because I had some of the concerns that other fans had too. I needed to know what he was all about. He WILL be a very good QB in this league.

1st off glad to see guys putting their differences about JW to the side and pulling for him… many felt this way before the season started but not so much after that 1st game but in hindsight, it looks like JW really IS in the better situation than MM with Koetter and the weapons he has at his disposal… Coach Whizz is NOT helping MM much & his weapons & team as a whole aren’t looking as good right now either… and looking at some of the dumb things the Titans have going on, it may be Whizz on the hot seat instead of Lovie…wouldn’t have guessed it after that 1st game… that’s why you gotta love Winston… the kid consistently bounces back from adversity…he can’t do it alone but if L&L keeps a solid team around this kid he can help the Bucs win & no game or moment will be too big for him…i feel this Washington game may be the game it all comes together for him & that “light” comes on for JW but i’ll take a zero turnover… game manager type game as well… as long as we get the W! #GoBucs

Joe thanks for sharing this tidbit. It is significant IMO. Koetter was primarily saying to Light – “Whatever you guys are doing in evaluating these players you are bringing in – keep it up – because you were right on the money with our #1 pick rookie QB”
I said with great confidence for months before the draft that Jameis Winston is one of the best QB prospects to have come out in a long time. 5 games into his career, Jaboo obviously has yet to prove that he can be elite at the NFL level consistently – but most who really know what they are seeing at this stage of his development understand that Jameis Winston is a special football player and exactly the type of Quarterback that you want leading your team into battle on Sundays.
We are soooooo lucky to have Jameis as the Buccaneers 1st legitimate franchise QB in team history.
Lovie Smith and Jason Licht are at the top of the decision making chain and deserve a TON of credit. Firstly for putting us in position to draft Jameis (multiple games were tanked last year for that very reason and you will never convince me otherwise) – and then for never wavering from that decision – despite all the negative things that were being said about Winston from so many places and people all across the country.
Here’s hoping that Jameis’ hard work and abilities reward L&L with multiple Super Bowl victories over the next 15 years and help turn Lovie Smith into the next Bill Belicheat from NFL history’s viewpoint. It could very well happen and even the Lovie haters who are way too short sighted to see the big picture will be glad if it does.
We long suffering Bucs fans deserve a good long run of success – and Jameis Winston is just exactly the spark plug that was needed to make it happen.
It’s unlikely we will see more than 6 or 7 wins this year – but within 2-3 years – this team will likely be competing for Championships and the Lovie haters will gladly be eating their crow for many years.

Mariota and Winston have played like… gasp… rookies. Meaning ups and downs. I’d love to see the Bucs open up the offense some more – Winston is a rookie, this is the time he should be learning from his mistakes, not having his playbook shortened because of mistakes. Overall Jameis has been exactly what I thought he’d be at this point – hopefully the bye week has been used well. The screens are a nice change of pace after years of not using them, however in Atlanta Koetter ran screens so much it was a joke and I hope that isn’t what the gameplan is, you don’t need Jameis to throw 5 yard passes.
