“Jaguars 24, Buccaneers 20”

October 9th, 2015

Brady Quinn and another noted NFL analyst are wagging a finger at Dirk Koetter and Lovie Smith’s management of Jameis Winston

What the hell is going on here?

Jacksonville has lost 11 consecutive road games and will play its third road game in a row on Sunday, yet multiple experts believes the Jags will handle the Bucs.

In the CBS Sports video below, former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn joins ex-Jets personnel chief and linebackers coach Pat Kirwan to break down Sunday’s Bucs-Jags game.

Both slammed the Bucs for asking Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, to throw too much. Kirwan talked about how the Bucs should “dumb it down” for Jameis, and said Jameis should be protected with “a rookie game plan.”

Quinn was ripping the Bucs for not playing more off the run game and asking Jameis to “throw into some of those blitz zones” and “and confusing zone coverages.”

Joe thinks these dudes are nuts. Jameis is averaging 33 throws per game. Mike Glennon, for example, threw 32 times per game in his rookie year. In 2011, rookie Cam Newton threw 32 times a game. Andy Dalton threw 32 times per game during his excellent rookie season. Last year, Teddy Bridgewater threw 31 times per start.

Do Quinn and Kirwan think Jameis is lacking?

Quinn believes Blake Bortles is the key to Sunday’s game and thinks the Jags’ talent is developing around him.

A Jags victory, 24-20, is called by Quinn. Pricky Pete Prisco chimes in and details the Jaguars are awful, but he still expects them to beat the Bucs by 10 points, 30-20.

  1. RCH Says:

The Jags will probably look like the best team in the NFL Sunday. Its unfortunate but for some reason the Bucs seem to make below average talent look like superstars and set franchise records.

On a positive note Quinn picked the Bucs the last two games and we all know how that went.

  2. NewTampaChris Says:

If multiple people tell you that you are a horse, you should go buy a blanket.

  3. Yungry Says:

Bucs will lose if they wear white jerseys. Bucs are undefeated in red.

  4. NewTampaChris Says:

The national media does not micro-analyze a team, as we fans do. They just look at us and say, “Well, the Bucs stink.”

If the team is truly “getting better,” then we’ll play competitive games against decent teams. The Bucs-Texans game was competitive but it was easy to watch it and see that both teams were horrible. From a fan’s eyes, I’ve seen few signs of improvement overall.

  5. rayjay1122 Says:

Yawn……So the Jags are picked to win the irrelevance bowl. Yippee!!

  6. RCH Says:

@Yungry they are wearing white jerseys with white paints and red socks.

  7. Tampa Tony Says:

Didn’t Quinn pick the Bucs to beat the Panthers? These guys are just guessing

  8. Yungry Says:

    @RCH
JW in red has 1 td and 0 int=109qb rating
JW in white has 5tds and 7ints
    ————–
    we are screwed this week!

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

I don’t think the Bucs have a winning regular season record against the Jags, having beaten them maybe twice. As far as Bucs winning records against any NFL team, possibly the Lions, that’s about it. They once called the Packers vs the Bucs the toilet bowl back when they shared the same division. I won’t go that far for this game, the meeting between the inept vs the more inept.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

For 3 weeks straight Quinn picked the Bucs to win right? Not that he’s some expert or anything, but perhaps he’s just that way off and the Bucs win this Sunday.

I don’t know what to tell ya. I think the game is a pick’em.

  11. unbelievable Says:

    @Joe,

I believe they were referencing his 43 pass attempts last week against Carolina when they say he’s throwing the ball too much. And he had 36 attempts the week before in Houston.

Regarding Glennon avergaing 32 attempts per game his rookie year, I also remember everyone thinking he was throwing too much. The difference is, this year we have had a run game at times, but we abandon it ever time we get down by 2 or more scores.

  12. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

We’d be 5-0 heading into the bye with Mariota at the helm.

I’m starting to get really bitter about that joke of a personnel decision.

Winston might be consistently good at some point, but it’s unlikely that he’ll ever be as good as Mariota.

Mariota has the most TD passes in NFL history thru the first quarter of the season and he’s only played 3 games.

‘The Team that passed on Mariota’ seems a bit cursed at this point andwe probably deserve it.

  13. Clint Says:

well like; we’ve lost how many consecutive home games and Jameis Winston is our QB. He’ll prob throw 30 picks. Why would anyone find a reason to pick the Bucs?

  14. Lamarcus Says:

    Rhc

Your right!!!! We let everyone look better against us. That’s reality. Jaguars d gritty and yes Jameis will have to pass more cuz we get behind really fast. Quinn has been wrong so we will see. I can’t believe we r at a all time low guessing who is going to win in this game

  15. Tampa Tony Says:

Erik- with these coaches Mariota would suck here as well

  16. Buds Fan Since '76 Says:

Buccfan37 – The media used to refer to those games as the repuS Bowl too. Actually, they called it that every time we played the other worst team in the NFL. That happened more than I can remember, sadly.

On another note, while I have been pushing for the Glazers to fire themselves and hire a real president/CEO to run things, I have not advocated they fire Lovie mideseason. For some reason I get the sense Lovie is toast if he loses to the Jags. I’m not sure how the Glazers keep him after losses to two of last year’s worst teams, especially given what Steven Ross did with the Dolphins. The guy has a top five business school named after him (Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan) and my guess is the Glazer boys might put some stock in that decision.

  17. Yungry Says:

Bucs 17 Jags 17, 1st tie of the year! Both teams are so bad neither will find a way to win. Get Mariota on your fantasy team asap

  18. RCH Says:

Say what you want but this game is extremely important to both organizations not only to see what coaching staff can stay off the hot seat for another week, but to see you picks 5th and 6th in the 2016 draft.

“We’d be 5-0 heading into the bye with Mariota at the helm.”

Is that just like the Titans record???

He’s got them at 5-0 right?

  20. Dooshlarue Says:

Bortles will light it up throwing to Mercedes Lewis.
    We will get spanked again.

  21. DB55 Says:

Quick reminder: first drive last week we ran the ball on first and second down. On 3rd&8 we threw an interception. We would run more if we could run more effectively.

Rainey could help but let’s leave him on the bench.

And as for Mariota being 5-0 child please mofo is 1-2 and I’ll be shocked if he makes it out of buffalo on 2 feet.

  22. Yungry Says:

Buffalo has given up the 4th most fantasy points this year. They have had a great defense the past few years but are off to a slow start.

  23. Yungry Says:

Mariota won the game for the Titans vs. Colts after marching the Titans down the field for the winning score. However, the coach opted to run for the 2-point conversion and failed. They should have trusted Mariota, like the Bucs should have also. Mariota should be 2-1 now not 5-0.

  24. DB55 Says:

I should be a filthy rich athlete but I suck so there you go.

  25. Seminole Bill Says:

A Jaguars victory over us on Sunday will be an absolute disaster. If we cannot beat the Jags at home, in our house, then the chance of a home win this year are nil. I hope (and pray) the players understand the seriousness of this game.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Yungry…yes and if there weren’t so many missed FG’s and dropped passes in Houston….blah blah blah…it’s ALL on JW. It’s all his fault and Mariota is a football GAWD!

    Pshhhh Bucs fans!

  27. OneLove Says:

Why does any of this matter Joseph!?!?

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “Brady WHO!?!?!?!”

  28. Buc1987 Says:

I’m just a wee bit cranked up today. I believe my ulcer came back or a have new one and it’s right under my heart. Just lots of gas all around my heart and my doc is on vacation until the 26th of this month.

So I’m not a happy camper as this has been going on for a week.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I have TICKETS to this weeks game and I don’t think I’m gonna make it there. If I don’t get better soon, life is gonna suck a whole lot worse than it has the past week for me.

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let Jameis “air it out”……..stop the sillyness…..let him throw bombs downfield….play action on first down (we always run, so that will work)…….keep Martin, Sims, Lane or a TE for checkdowns……

    Go for it….win or lose.

And the Defense needs to blitz on most downs…..can’t cover passes anyway so why not.

  30. rayjay1122 Says:

    @87
Just in case you never saw it because you were “medicated”, I answered your 1122 question on the Mankins injury thread yesterday.

  31. ShutTheBucUp Says:

This game should be all sorts of silly. I’m not surprised the “experts” are choosing the Jags. If you’ve watched Bucs football this season, you’d be amazed that they actually won a game. And the only game we won was against a crappy team with injuries galore and an injured QB. I’m done getting mad about how bad this team sucks right now. I hope they right the ship, but in the meantime I’ll be watching for the comic relief.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

rayjay lol I saw it late in the night. That was funny. Anniversary, I NEVER remember mine. I don’t know why or what it is, I just couldn’t even tell you right now what it is. Maybe because we were together for 8 yrs and used to celebrate the anniversary of our first date for so many years. Can’t forget that date. Never will.

    It was Sept 11th.

    Oh and Go Bucs!

    —————–

One thing that also has to be considered in making that statement is what are the Titans asking of Mariota. Are they asking him to read the whole field, are they asking him to check off plays at the line, etc. Whatever they’re doing it’s working as far as transitioning him into the nfl but it’s hard to say the Bucs would be undefeated with him when the Titans aren’t even winning.

  34. Stevek Says:

    ShutTheBucUp,

    Exactly! Great points.

Our team is 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩 right now.

No excuse for the heartless, loser mentality type of play. They are professionals, they need to compete. Some of these guys are playing confused/sad football. These guys need to ball out.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

ShutTheBucUp …I was watching the highlight of Ronde’s INT in the NFC Champ game the other night. As he runs it into the end zone Eagles fans (trash)starting throwing stuff on the field.

I’m all for throwing stuff onto to the field at this point. In fact I did throw my season pass on the field back in 2013. Ran down the steps, took it off my neck and hucked it into the end zone. The crowd behind me just roared with applause, and then I bowed. Good times!

I’m a pretty emotional Bucs fan.

  36. Soggy Says:

Buc1987, I have had stomac problems until I started eating aloe plant, I started a few years ago and now I see alot more people are catching on, I don’t know about the stuff they started selling at walmart it might be fine but I just grow my own and it works great.. dice it up and throw it in your salad or eggs or whatever..Well research it and see if it might be somthing you would try..

  37. AceofAerospace Says:

I think Brady Quinn was being generous. Jags 35 Bucs 17. I have seen nothing since Lovie arrived to make me believe we win this game.

  38. mike Johnson Says:

I really hate to say this. Butt…this is our Bucs Superbowl. If we lose this one,
we will be the league’s worst team of 2015. They had better start Jamis real slow, some runs/screens and then work him up to the passes. Based on past performances, he is a Jinx on critical 1st qtr possessions. So play lights out Defense and work Jamis up. If we fall behind early? Its over. I just want to see us play with some heart..passion..urgency and guts. Hit somebody!! Jvilles offense is not that bad. We..are gonna have to play good Defense.
    BUCS 17 JAGS 13….as I down a double libation..hopin..prayin….

  39. Yungry Says:

The Mariota haters are either in denial OR hating a player’s success. Always talking should’ve make that catch. Could’ve made that block, or Would’ve won if….. Jameis has sucked and his Houston performance was NOT good! 46% of passes were completed. News Flash: Every qb gets drops every game. Up your standards and demand better. Stop with the excuses and Manning comparisons and win a freaking home game.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

Soggy I think I’ve got a bunch of aloe plants growing on the side of my house but I’m not sure, it looks like aloe. They were here when I bought the house. I’ve heard about aloe and stomachs in the past as I’ve had MANY problems with my digestive tract over the last few years and did all kinds of searching for answers. Never growing up though. Getting old sucks. I’ll look into it, thanks for the reminder. I forgot about eating aloe.

I’m so sorry Joe. I know this isn’t Buc related stuff, but I REALLY want to go to this game.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

Yungry….is that like as in the Titans coach should’ve not gone for 2….is that along the same lines? You can’t have it both ways.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

BTW…nobody “hates” Mariota. He’s just not a Buc and he will never be one. You Mariota supporters(I have no idea why) really should be holding back until further in the season before you start thumping your chest.

  43. ATrain Says:

The Bucs will have their best game this week. They will look like an NFL..

    You want to know why…..

    Players Coach Syndrome.

Lovie is a players Coach. The players know if they lose to the Jags at home Lovie will be heading home to the basement.

The players don’t want a tough Coach to come in and hold them truly accountable for their miss tackles and penalties. Heck they can’t line upon Offensive without a penalty..

    ———————————————————
They should have gone for 2 but should’ve let Mariota throw it instead of handing it off to the back who couldn’t make it in. They ran the same running play twice in a row. Hence, Colts won. But, it doesn’t matter that was like 2 weeks ago.

  45. Soggy Says:

Buc1987, Ok and good luck and that goes for the bucs too.. OH YA..

  46. Couch Fan Says:

Im calling it now, Bortles will have a career day. We will see more missed FGs. The Defense will continue to look inept. Jameis will have a good day. Imcompetent Lovie will stand sleepily on the sidelines and watch his team find a way to lose, another home game, as usual. Then get boo’d out of the stadium by the few fans who stay to watch it all.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

Yungry…it certainly mattered to you. I didn’t even see the highlights for the game. I don’t hate Mariota. I was once for either one of them for about a month. Until I watched a lot of Oregon highlights here and there. There’s really no FSU bias in me when it comes to Winston. I care about the Bucs much more than the Noles. I’m a Noles fan, but the Bucs own a piece of my heart.

  48. Yungry Says:

    1987,

I wanted Marcus but liked Winston’s leadership at the Combine. I am rooting for Winston to succeed, Bucs really need a big game from him. Have fun at game Sunday! Hopefully, there will be a lot of cannons firing

  49. ATrain Says:

Bucs Fans enjoy Sundays Win as it will be the last one this year.

We will pick 1st in the draft again..

Mark the date it was called today!!!

Winston will set a Bucs record for most INT.

  50. Bucnjim Says:

Jags O line have owned the Bucs all the way back to the days of Mark Brunell. They will spend the entire day bringing in extra offensive lineman and pushing the Bucs undersized D all over the field. Won’t be pretty for either side, but the Bucs DO NOT match up well with the Jags. Winston benched after two more early turnovers and Lovie resigns after his team goes 0-14 at home. Jags 12-10.

  51. Bucnjim Says:

This is what we have come to expect? Begging our team to get a win at home against a last place team with WAY LESS talent! Sad Sad Sad!

  52. DB55 Says:

    87

This thread is giving me ulcers right now!

  53. Bucnjim Says:

Nostradamus says he can see the future of the Bucs and it isn’t Lovie Dovie. Unfortunately another complete regime change is in the near future. Past will meet the present and take the Bucs far into the future. The next staff will help erase the depression of the past decade. Until then we are up the creek without a paddle.

  54. Bucnut Says:

It is really sad that many of the media and ALL of the Bucs front office fell for the hype and drafted JW. The guy is just awful. The media can complain about Lovie but here are some facts. ONE guy is responsible for 2 of our 3 losses, JW. Her burred us early and couldn’t recover. Let’s remember that he has PERSONALLY given the opponents 17 points on the first 3 possessions of our home games. Do you all get that. In the FIRST 3 possessions of our home game HE has scored 17 points fro our opponents? DON’T blame Lovie or anyone else. JW has LOST 2 games for us

  55. Bucnut Says:

  56. Bucnut Says:

I now know what the Joe’s meant when they called JW America’s QB. He’s going to help EVERY team in America win OTHER than the Bucs.

  58. Buc1987 Says:

“Winston benched after two more early turnovers and Lovie resigns after his team goes 0-14 at home. Jags 12-10.”

    PRBucfan …we have another Nostradamus.

  59. Sick of Lovie Says:

    Eric with clean ath…..

What all you knuckleheads keep losing sight of is that Mariota went on to a team that is actually preparing their players for football. They game plan and do other alien things to win football games that our team has no clue of. So, sorry but your continous beating of a dead horse is irrelevant. This whole thing lands on Lovies head, he’s an empty suit. But keep on wasting those key strokes there pal.

  60. DoNUTS Says:

JW crushes it this weekend. He puts team on his back with 350+yds/5 TD drives…throws 3 TD. 2 TDs rushing by Martin/Sims.

    Bucs 35 Jags 24

    GoBUCS!

  65. DoNUTS Says:

    Bucnut2
All true he has had some really bad football. 1 okay game basically at NO but bad play is typical for 90% of rookies. The problem is the media said he was most NFL ready and thats just not true. Expectation bar set too high. Sample size is small at moment. He has a good chance this week so lets see what happens. Really need to be at 10 game mark to say what we have with JW…is he getting better or not. Flashes of greatness or not..

  66. passthebuc Says:

Although I doubt they Bucs will win many games this year, This one is a lock. Don’t ask me why, Just feel it coming.

  67. Couch Fan Says:

Horrible special teams. Defense giving up almost 140 rush yards per game along with 29 points a game and leading the league in penalties. Constantly being outcoached and schooled by back ups and rookies. But you rather blame the rookie QB for not playing great football instead of Incompetent Lovie. Some of you are ridiculous.

  68. Warrenfb12 Says:

I’m going to be seriously traumatized if the jags beat us by ten going into a bye week

  69. J Says:

    Joe,

Mike Glennon threw as much as Jameis, but didn’t turn it over nearly as much. Because he could read defenses.

  70. J Says:

Couch Fan you are right it is on Lovie. Jameis can’t help that he was drafted in the wrong spot.

  71. James Walker Says:

I am sick of the “it’s Lovie” or “it’s Jameis” BS! The team stinks, the couches stink, and the owners are the worst of all. The Lightning changed owners and now sell out so many games you can no longer buy season tickets! SELL THE TEAM TO SOMEONE WHO CARES! The Glazers only care about Manchester United!

  72. Pat Says:

Good coaches like Mr. Bill & Mr.McCarthy….you know what they do. They really TEACH their players HOW to play NFL football. They teach their players emphasizing even the minutest nuances to transition from college to pro. That is called discipline. And the latter is called lack of it. Check out how many ‘dumb it down’ penalties that will cost the Bucs dearly tomorrow. How many do you call in advance?

  73. Buc1987 Says:

    Pat…I say 12.

  74. Johnny Dejay Says:

The Jaguars are a very beatable team, and so are the Redskins in week 7 after the bye. The Bucs have a decent shot at being 3-3 going into the meat of the schedule.

Anything can happen when a young team gets confident and gathers momentum. It happened here before in 1996 under Dungy, the Bucs were awful until midseason, then they reeled off several wins in the second half. Nobody saw that metamorphosis coming.

Dallas is decimated by injuries, Philly is falling apart, New Orleans has to come to Tampa, and the Giants, Colts, and Bears are beatable.

Things might not be as bad as they seem right now. This game against Jacksonville is definitely a watershed moment for this franchise. A win could propel them to a 6 or 7 win season and a loss would probably cement another 2 win season.

  75. ATrain Says:

Lovie will not Bench Winston every …

    EGO in the way..
Heck we still have Verner in the Bench with two CB who can’t cover my 80 year old mother…

  76. bucsbedabest Says:

I keep hearing the Jaguars are a better team?

    Offense
QB – Edge Bortels – Bortels is coming into his own going 28 of 50 for 298 yards in his last game. Winston had 4 INT and a fumble.
RG – Edge Jags – TJ Yeldon ran for a buck five last week with a 4.8 yards per carry. Doug Martin had his best game vs Panthers when he ran for 106 yards.
WR – Edge Bucs – With the twin towers the Bucs Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson should have a big day vs Jags secondary. No Josh Norman this week.
TE – Edge Jags – Myers and Brate vs You wanna ride in my Mercedes Lewis?
OL – Edge Jags – Top ten run blocking OL. Bucs bottom ten everything.

    Defense
DT – Edge Bucs Michael Bennett (the other) and Roy Miller vs Gerold McCoy Clinton McDonald, Jacquies Smith and the “Monster of Tampa Bay” William Gholston.
LB – Edge Jags – Telvin Smith vs a rookie and Houdini
CB – Edge Jags – We have Mike Jenkins starting
S – Edge – Jags Who are the Bucs Safeties?
    Jags win 17 – 13
