Dumb Bucs

October 26th, 2015

dumbYes, Joe brought word earlier that Lovie Smith’s Bucs are on pace to set an NFL record for penalties, a terrible sign for any coach no matter what level of football.

Joe also learned the Bucs lead the league in inducing their fans to vomit, collectively, each Sunday. But that is another story.

Well-respected former Washington Post columnist and Redskins beat writer Michael Wilbon, now a talking head for BSPN, took to Twitter and excoriated the Bucs for being the dumbest clucks he’s ever seen on a football field.

That pretty much sums it up. “Dumber” and “incompetence.” Why is that? Who chose the final 53-man roster?

Joe believes, strongly believes, coaches are teachers. So what is Lovie teaching his team? Specifically, what the hell is he teaching his defense?

Either Lovie isn’t, or his message isn’t getting across. No matter how you shake it out, that all goes back to the head coach.

That would be Lovie.

Wilbon makes a great point! Lovie and his motley crew makes the Colts’ coaching staff ( remember the fake punt vs the Pats) look like Mensa initiates in comparison to himself and his playcalling! Fire him, fire him, fire him!!!!

  2. buc4life1979 Says:

PLAIN AS DAY OBVIOUS THE COACHES WHO ARE ACTUALLY COACHING SOMETHING WORTH A DAM BECAUSE THE PLAYERS RECIEVING THAT COACHING ARE CONSISTENTLY BETTER EACH WEEK. FIRE LOVIE, NAME KOETTER INTERIM NOW

  3. bucc15 Says:

On a positive note (I know it’s hard but try to follow me here) I did see something great yesterday. For the 1st 24 mins of the game, the Bucs came out with an attitude to enforce their will on Washington. All season this type of attitude has been mia. However, this was f’d up by soft ass Lovie “calming” his team down. One good example was Marpet’s personal foul. O Line is supposed to be nasty and if you want to hold one of our guys down like Washington was doing, you will be removed with force. You don’t want to see too many personal fouls but I love to see Ali step up and set the tone. Afterwards you have a personal visit from Lovie trying to calm him down. Lovie is as soft as Charmin and needs to not even speak to either lines & let the position coaches handle it. Any halfway decent coach would have kept the foot on the gas and finished them off in the 3rd quarter. I bet if Mr Rogers was still alive he would be harder than Lovie.

  4. bucrightoff Says:

When Jay Gruden runs laps around you as a coach, you should probably lose your job. When Kirk Cousins goes from likely benched for Colt McCoy to historically great Redskins QB performance, the coach of that defense should probably lose his job.

  5. tortured orlando bucs fan Says:

I’m very, very disappointed that when I checked the bucs news this morning in my app, I didnt see every site having the same headline reading “lovie smith fired”

If course our coach is incompetent, but the ownership even more so by not ending lovies failed experiment ASAP and moving on so…one day…we can become a winning team again….lovie has prooved beyond a reasonable doubt that he cannot coach anything resembling a playoff team in today’s NFL. Right now, the best thing that can happen to our bucs is another disasterous loss so just MAYBE the glazers will get the hint. Every single thing, from FAs to gameplanning, running an obsolete scheme….lovie has failed, and failed miserably

  6. lightningbuc Says:

Have the Glazers finished counting the weekly take yet and emerged from the vault over at One Buc to make any sort of comment on this latest crap fest?

  7. DHutch Says:

I’m still not a fan of changing coaches every two years, but it’s hard to defend what I saw yesterday. The faith in this team is at an all time low. Even with a 24 pt lead we crap our pants and take an L. What next?

  8. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

If the Glazers had a clue then they’d call Steven Ross and pick his brain about the Dolphins move to Dan Campbell. Then they’d look inside the Bucs and evaluate whether we have a potentially similar situation with Hardy Nickerson. If they determine yes we do, then fire Lovie, and promote Nickerson. Follow the Dolphins blueprint in terms of who stays as defensive coordinator. As an owner the only thing I’d take off the table would be the offensive staff. In fact, even if I fired myself and brought on the president / CEO I’d leave the O off the table. History has shown if you want to retard a rookie star QB’s development then place his coordinator. And in this case, that could be even more catastrophic given the O’s performance and Jaboo’s improvement the past two weeks.

  9. Newbucsfan Says:

Tennessee lost by 3, Jags almost lost to the Bills who made a comeback, the chiefs have slowly declined under Andy Reid but no one is talking about firing them and promoting the asst. coach. The Bucs are not a very good team but an improving young team but not fast enough for some. Before the season started everyone chalked this season up to a rookie qb learning process and now want the coach fired because they aren’t 5-0.

  10. jb Says:

The Glazers can’t get rid of this incompetent boob fast enough!!

  11. passthebuc Says:

There is only one way for lovie to get fired. Should only 10,000 or less show up on game day, that would send the needed message to the Glazers.

  12. Phil Says:

Why is Lovie still employed today?

  13. passthebuc Says:

Where is the sign similar to fire Schiano. He would be an improvement over Lovie. With all the penalties, Toe’s on the Line may be just what is needed.

  14. passthebuc Says:

@Joe. Since you continue to reference Winston as America’s QB, please post the photo of dumb and dumber every time you mention Lovie.

Have you looked at the Bucs first 6 games? Easily the weakest schedule anyone in the NFL has played this year. An even slightly above average coach would have this team 4-2 or even 5-1. Instead we’re lucky Drew Brees was hurt or we’d be 1-5, in pole position for back to back #1 picks….

.,..then when you remember Lovie is an 11 year NFL vet and…this is quite pathetic don’t you think? Like clearly worse than Schiano? Go to PFT or any neutral site, most people think we’re a bigger joke now than with Schiano. We’ve gone backwards under Lovie, with a very difficult close to the season where finding 2 more wins is difficult.

  16. Ufcguy32 Says:

He deserves to be fired bc he consistently cant get his defense to stop any level of qb in the nfl. I refuse to think these guys cant figure out where to lineup and cover a slant. Its been going on for 2 fking yrs. Same issue. Middle of the field and we cant turn our heads and cover a receiver. I didnt see one db turn his head yesterday. Its fking pathetic

  17. destro44 Says:

    @Newbucsfan

Here is the difference, the offense isn’t losing games. Winston’s turnovers vost us the Carolina game ok. But in 6 games we gave up 19 points twice and over 30 the other 4 games. I’m sorry but the other 31 teams would be looking for a new Defensive coordinator today! Here is the problem, our head coach is the DC rolling out this garbage. I’m not a fan of turnover in coaches every 2 years, but this defense is atrocious.

  18. MtBucsFan Says:

Fire Lovie make Koetter interim coach and possible head coach. He will be a head coach in the near future and hes doing well with this offense. Yes there are still issues but the offense is still young. Can’t take your foot of the throat of any team in the NFL. I had flashbacks to the Indy, Tampa game from years ago. But that QB is no Manning!!!

  19. Tampa Tony Says:

I don’t even come here for Bucs talk anymore. Just come here to laugh at the excuses for Loser Lovie by un knowledgeable fans

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie is so soft that he is in fact lighter than a calm breeze.

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Before the season started everyone chalked this season up to a rookie qb learning process and now want the coach fired because they aren’t 5-0.”

No we want him fired because he is failing at his job. He is a defensive coach and his defense has been one of the worst in the league after 2 full off seasons of implementing his system and getting players that he wanted. There is zero excuse that we don’t have a top 20 or top 15 scoring defense at this point in his tenure. If anything he should have us around a top 10 scoring defense. We were in top 10 scoring defense the final 10 weeks of last year when Leslie was calling plays.

    Simple as that.

It’s not the losses but how we are losing.

    1. Blown out by a rookie QB and completely unprepared for an offense catered to Mariota’s skill set. Should have known read-option would be used and that they wanted the ball out of his hands fast. Complete lack of prepration = on head coach.

    2. Conservative calls against Houston; taking a FG instead of going for a TD before half. Defense played OK but still had so many penalties

    3. No back up plan kicker for Brindza after he missed all those kicks and he misses more the following week. Lovies decision and possibly cost us 2 games.

    4. Defense shredded all year when forcing the offense to pass. Defenses should be happy when they know the offense is 1 dimensional; but our defense plays scared in those situations.

Bottom line is we are one of the worst scoring defenses in the entire league. Bottom line is we are the most penalized team in the league.
Bottom line is we have historically left points on the board before the 2nd half due to playing scared. This could have already costed us 2 games this year.

Those kind of failures fall squarely on the head coach.

Meanwhile our Rookie QB has played very solid ball in 4 of 6 games. He is not the reason for losses; which is what you were alluding to when people predicted a rough season due to having a rookie QB. He’s the reason we lost to Carolina but that’s it.

Houston loss / Titans loss / and now Redskins loss = solely on the shoulders of a bad HC imo

What positive signs can anyone see that are actually related to Lovie?

-Improved QB play – not Lovie
    -Improved O-line – not Lovie
-Improved run game – not Lovie
-Improved talent via draft – not Lovie

What value is he adding to these players / this team? I just don’t see it man. I had hope based on the 10 game stretch to end last year but this is just a garbage product to watch on the defensive side

  22. ChanEpic Says:

Can’t we please, just once MAXIMIZE the talent we have? Are we cursed or what? Why do players leave and become good and why do coaches always trip over their own Johnsons here? I mean seriously when will this crap END? I HATE the coaching carousel and can’t imagine starting over again but is that going to happen again? sigh!

  23. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    Wilbon is a Bears fan

Is it any wonder who he was talking about in that tweet?

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Lovie Smith = Dan Reeves

  25. Lord Cornelius Says:

I didn’t even address Redskins game in that long post.

Up 24-0 with a first down after a big run gain; with over a minute to go and ALL THREE TIMEOUTS.

Only the biggest p*ssy of a coach does not go for the jugular there. The way Winston was locked in yesterday we could have easily scored a f*cking TD and been up 31-0 at half.

Offensive possessions are valuable as you only get a few a game. If you aren’t going to try and do anything with them you might as well quit right then and there out of fear of losing.

  26. OneLove Says:

    @Lord Cornelius

Players that he wanted or players that he HAD to get?? Last time I checked Lovie had final say on ALL player decisions so…

-Improved QB play – is on Lovie because he tanked last year to get our savior. Give the man the credit he deserves!
-Improved O-line – 2 of our starters were drafted by Lovie.
-Improved run game – 2 of our starters were drafted by Lovie.
-Improved talent via draft – This is all Lovie!

Please get your head out of your behind and stop picking and choosing what he gets credit for. He can’t get none of the credit and all of the blame. He is going to rebuild this thing right with another 2 years of solid defensive drafting. Then there will be NO EXCUSE!

Time To – Break Out The Check Boyz

    1. Jon Gruden (Blank Check)
    2. Jim Harbaugh

  28. John McKillop Says:

The problems with the Bucs is, what Lovie is teaching and preaching isn’t resulting in success and wins. When this happens the most natural thing in the world happens, and that is tuning out the coach. Two weeks ago after beating the Jags, Clinton McDonald said there has to be buy in, this statement right here says a lot, I’m surprised more people didn’t comment about it. It tells me that McDonald isn’t seeing the buy in necessary to turn this thing around. This is going to get potentially uglier. Go Bucs! I’m still a fan, and I want what’s best for the team, I think that means moving on from Lovie.

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

OneLove – Jason Light & Jon Robinson run the drafts. At least that’s how it’s been described by all Bucs media. Lovie may sign off on the player or position philosophy but Light and Robinson find the talent.

I’m giving credit EXACTLY where it’s due according to all available info. It was Jason Light that said he wanted Winston as far back as the prior draft.

Lovie didn’t fall in love Ali Marpet it was the scout team and Jason Light. Pretty obvious to read between the lines on all transactions and see how all the FAs brought in are guys Lovie is familiar with and they’ve sucked. Meanwhile all the good players have been finds of Rovinson and Light.

Also meant to say we were only up 17 before half which makes it that much dumber to not try and get more points.

Lovie was here last year when the offense stunk. Dirk Koetter hiring + Jason light driven infusion of talent = reasons for any improvemt we’ve seen this year. Love took over defensive play calling duties and the results are one of the worst defenses in the league. This isn’t that complicated

  30. Pat Says:

Well, this time around, there’s no patsy Tedford to yank…maybe Leslie? Yup, he’s to blame for 16 penalties and minus 146 yards. Backwards to the Future we go.

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

There’s enough talent on this team to win. I’ve seen plenty do more with less.

C’mon Glazers is time to bite the bullet

    Interm Head Coach: Dirk Koetter
    Asst. Head Coach: Leslie Frazier
    Defense Coordinator: Hardy Nickerson

  32. LUVMYBUCS Says:

C’mon Glazers *its time to bite the bullet

  33. bucrightoff Says:

Here’s another one for the Lovie defenders:

2014 season, Lovie not calling the defense: 4 total games of opponents scoring 30 or more in 16 games

2015 season, Lovie calling the defense: 4 games of opponents scoring 30 or more in 6 games

Lovie has had such a positive impact on the defense, clearly. How embarrassing for Lovie that Leslie Frazier is a better coach. Humiliating really.

  34. pelbuc Says:

Buc fans are in football hell. Terrible coaches and worse owners. Don’t forget the sorry players and we have the 2015 Bucs. Don’t ask for patience when there’s no hope in sight. Lovie’s incompetent coaching is matched by his personnel decisions. Need to fire Lovie now and bench McCoy, LVD and all those other 4th qtr stars. Then after the season is mercifully over, fire everyone except Koetter. Clean house on the defensive side. Pathetic!!!!!

  35. tmaxcon Says:

i have been bashing lovie hard since about week 4 of last year. originally i was happy they signed him but once it became clear he learned NOTHING from his chicago mistakes nor during his year off in the basement I quickly fell of the lovie band wagon. Now, I can’t even bash the guy anymore it’s like beating up on a senior citizen or a handicapped individual. I actually feel sorry for lovie at this point. His stubbornness and ignorance are beyond comprehension.

  36. OneLove Says:

    @Lord Cornelius

NO, you’re not giving credit where it’s due. Lovie Smith has full control of all PLAYER/PERSONNEL decisions, therefore HE is responsible for drafting ALL our draft picks. He get’s credit for Winston, Marpet, Smith and revamping this offense which has sputtered for YEARS! He did that through 2 OFFENSIVE drafts and the results are evident.

I understand your angry about the way our defense is performing, but he hasn’t had a chance to rebuild it yet.(You don’t rebuild something through free agency) I’m pretty sure he thought he could plugin some free agents around some of the core overrated players we currently had, but he was obviously wrong. Sure, he tried to bring in some people that were familiar with his system and even I admit he made some HUGE mistakes via free agency in an attempt to BETTER the team, but what did you expect him to do!? NOTHING!?!?!

I get it ladies…. We are all angry and probably scheduling some appointments to get some Cialis for our newly acquired ED, but I still think we gotta stay HARD(Pun intended) and STRONG and see this thing through.

I DO NOT want to bring in a whole new coaching staff and go through ANOTHER ROSTER turnover and go through ANOTHER EPISODE of Erectile Dysfunction!!!!! I am on the ship and will always be on the ship…

Please Glaziers!! I beg of you!!! DO NOT BE DUMB LIKE THE DAVIS’!!!!!

May God have mercy on you all…..

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith

  37. bucrightoff Says:

OneLove, I just proved to you Lovie is a worse defensive coach than Leslie Frazier. Would you like to defend that fact? Because it involves evidence and not your hopes and dreams and theories. So, defend away sir.

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie is used to being in his basement. The NFC South basement should give him that warm comfy feeling.

  39. Lord Cornelius Says:

Onelove comon man. Lovie Smith has NEVER… NEVER been known to be an offensive talent guru whatsover. His GMs historically make the draft decisions. He’s never been a QB or o-line expert.

Loves strength as a HC is supposed to be in coaching up defense. He has talent on the defensive side already; in an all pro DT; all pro LB; former pro bowl CB, 2nd round solid CB, former probowl/all pro DT in Melton; a great MLB rookie. It’s not a bunch of scrubs and the worst players on the team are ex Lovie guys from before . It’s his job to coach the defense into being respectable at worst. He’s the one who thinks you can win in this league with defense and special teams; as he’s been quoted saying many times; yet the #1 weakness of his team is defense and it isn’t close.

  40. Onetrickpony Says:

    Maybe
lovie is looking again for high picks via the draft?😁

  41. Bucfan951 Says:

Lovie smith built this offense? 😂 Funniest thing I’ve read on these comments in a long time. Oh man, that was a good laugh!

  42. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Lord Cornelius

    Welcome aboard sir!!!!

  43. Lord Cornelius Says:

@Realist – yep lol but only on board the anti Lovie train. Not really anti anything else. I have tried to be patient but this picture looks too clear. Schiano was a terrible HC too. Not sure we’d be any better with him at all but Lovie is not turning the D around and that’s what the glazers HAD to expect with his hiring and he has been a failure. I saw signs last year but his moves this offseason in terms of personnel and taking over d play calling has resulted in MUCH WORSE defense than the one I kept talking about during the final 10 games last year. Who else is there to blame??

  44. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Lord Cornelius

What gets to me is that once the other team finds something that works that the Defensive staff can do nothing to adjust to it. It is like having a small hole in a boat and everyone just stares at it until it sinks the whole thing???

  45. BucFan20 Says:

The real problem is Lovie still can’t find the hole!!

  46. Couch Fan Says:

This is why we call him Imcompetent Lovie. LoL. The rest of the world is finding out what some of us, who watch and understand what we are seeing, already knew.
