Deceit?

Local writer believes Lovie Smith has been deceitful with fans from Day 1.

Joe has learned one thing about Bucs coach Lovie Smith in his not quite 22 months on the job: Lovie likes to spin.

There’s his habit of turning questions about Johnthan Banks into soliloquies about his pet Mike Jenkins, to claiming stats are distortion (unless you use stats that make Lovie look good.)

But conning people? Joe isn’t going there.

But good guy Gil Arcia did. Typing on his website, TheBayCave, Arcia believes Lovie has been less than honest with Bucs fans from the moment he was introduced in January 2014, starting with Lovie stating how much Darrelle Revis was a perfect fit for his system.

Revis, arguably one of the best players in the league still, is no longer around due to the head coach’s decision not to pay him. But as you can tell in the quote above, he was already setting up his decision to let Revis go by emphasizing what McCoy meant to him.

Should have known then what that show was all about.

Time has passed since then but nothing has changed. Smith’s act is still seen almost everyday each week with show times in the afternoon. Monday’s performance was his best ever and I can honestly say I have officially heard it all.

Arcia was outraged over Lovie’s confession that trying to score points late in the first half is a bad thing because of what could go wrong.

Joe understands. Hey, tomorrow, call your boss and tell him you can’t drive to work because someone could blow a red light and T-bone you. See how that flies.

Arcia is no fan of Gerald McCoy, and just Joe connecting dots, Arcia believes Revis was sacrificed to re-up GMC. Sounds logical.

Joe will say this about Revis, his salary, and the salary cap: First, you don’t let a future Hall of Famer in his prime walk away with zero compensation. You just do not do that.

Second, when someone shows Joe a direct correlation between team payroll and wins, then Joe will start paying attention to the salary cap. To the best of Joe’s knowledge, there is no such formula.

Lastly, if the Bucs hadn’t burned through tens of millions of Team Glazer loot on NFL jackwads like Anthony Collins, Ghost Johnson and Josh McClown, in addition to two others since deemed unfit to start for one of the worst teams in the NFL, the Bucs easily could have afforded Revis’ contract.

Of course Lovie is “conning” everyone……his biggest con of all was conning the Glazers into hiring him!!!!!!

  2. Tampa Tony Says:

Lovie should be a agent or a salesman. His spin skills are out of this world, too bad his coaching skills don’t match it

  3. Ray Rice Says:

[Nah, man. Take it easy. — JoeI hear Aunt Geraldine will dress up as an NFL player this Saturday. He’s always wanted to be one. Halloween is his only chance.

  4. Dean Says:

    Joe:

Let’s lay this Revis crap to rest. He went to the Patriots, worked for the best defensive mind in football, and produced much better than he did with the bucs.
But what happened, Joe. Big Bill let him walk. Why?

As good as Revis is, he just is not worth 15 Million off your payroll. Revis’ greed is what has caused his coming and goings. No corner is worth 15 Mil a year, even if you do bring an island with you.

  5. CC Says:

Lovie is a charlatan. He convinced Chicago to give him a massive pay raise at the expense of Rivera and others on his coaching staff. And suckered the Glazers by saying we would be a good football team immediately. Just give me Revis’ money.

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie love notes. I thought the T bone thing was hilarious.

  7. R.O Says:

Mostly defensive free agents. Defense has been neglected of draft choices. QB has bee stabilized (crossing fingers). Time to infuse the defense with young talent not re treads no other teams wanted. Still need a WR though. Maybe Bell will be productive but I don’t think so.

  8. Joe Says:

Let’s lay this Revis crap to rest.

    Sure.

Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

  9. scott fitzgerald Says:

Im sure the Bucs tried to trade Revis but it was painfully obvious that we were going to drop him anyways.

  10. scott fitzgerald Says:

Last year Lovie was all about bringing that Tampa 2 back and we didn’t need Revis. This year he is very missed because 1 we are playing much more man coverage and 2 we missed on the MJ signing

Yeah considering the secondary we have now, I think Revis at $16 million would be a bargain. But the point isn’t even the money, the Bucs have replaced him with utter trash, and wasted all that money anyways. Remember between Verner and the dead Collins/Johnson money, that pays for Revis. And if you’d seriously rather not have Revis than that, I really don’t know what to say other than you must love Lovie a lot.

  12. CC Says:

Dean……..Lovie blew Revis money and the 1st round pick we used to get him on players that were mis evaluated and sucked. We could and should have kept him. Last time I looked we are still well below the salary cap. New England won a Super Bowl with Revis and the big difference with resigning him is that New England did not have cap space. Never do. They have to pay Brady and spend their entire cap. WE never do.

This is really stupid. How exactly did Lovie con the Glazers into hiring him? The Glazers took a flight up to Chicago to meet face-to-face with Lovie which shows how much they wanted him. They’re not about to fire him after going through the effort to get the guy they wanted.

  14. Ray Rice Says:

    @JOE

My apologies boss. As a loyal fan like the rest of the cats here it bothers me that we are still having the same conversations over and over. Call me dumb but I see a winning team under all this bull$hit. THE MESSIAH is putting them in position to win. Yet they keep doing the same $hit. OL is exceeding expectations. Offense is putting up points. All the D needs to do is get ONE stop. ONE! Who’s responsible for that?…. Lovie.

  15. Joe Says:

    Ray:

Understand your frustration. Very much so. But no need to go off on Lovie like that. Remember, Joe is responsible for every word on this site.

    Love the passion, though.

  16. Supersam Says:

Makes me sick every time I hear the names, Talib, Revis, Blount, Bennett, Penn… The list goes on and on.

  17. DB55 Says:

Glennon is the QB of the future (right after we start McClown and draft Jameis).

  18. DB55 Says:

“So don’t bring the rest of the games in here, either. Each one of them is a totally different situation.”
    **********************
Sounds like something a cheating spouse would say.

  19. ndog Says:

So the real question here Joe is if you had to choose would it be GMC or Revis? To me it is clear but I know you love you some overrated GMC so what say you?

  20. DallasBuc Says:

Bucs fans- don’t forget that he conned nearly all of you too. I was the only voice out there before the 2014 preseason started yelling from the mountain tops that Lovie and lapdog Licht were making huge mistakes getting rid of good football players and signing bad ones. “Quantity over quality” was my mantra then and I was proven right. Even had you guys conned after 2-14. Mercifully, 4-18 has brought some clarity to the fan base but it’s not good enough because I don’t think the Glazers have the stones to admit yet another coaching hire mistake. Pride is a sombitch!

  21. TheShaz Says:

Bottom line, the Bucs defense blew that game. I know the offense could have and should have scored a TD instead of a FG on more than one trip to the Red Zone.

But a 24-0 Lead was established. The defense should have been able to hold…but didn’t. End of story.

This town is dying for winning football…..just begging for it. We suffered thru a 2-14 season, got Jameis out of it. Then when hopes are high we get the Lucy to Charlie Brown treatment and we embarrass ourselves week 1. We eek out two wins and then again, a game we should have won. We come out fast and get a 24-0 lead, Bucs fans are finally thinking….ABOUT TIME! They are turning the corner! Here we go!

And they choke and blow a 24 point lead and lose the game.

I have been screaming on Twitter about our INACTION at the end of the 1st half. We have a decent kicker. We have a QB with a cannon and WR’s that can out-jump 90% of the DB’s out there. And this QB has no issues with bouncing back from a INT. In those cases, air the ball out. If it gets picked off, it will be deep in the opponents field with little time left.
Benefits outweigh the risks in that situation.

I am on the Jameis bandwagon, I can see the future with this kid. I am not at the Joe’s “On Knees with Lips Locked on Jameis’ Posterior” position. But I am quickly becoming a fan of his.

I agree with Gil…. McCoy is not playing to his lofty status as team leader. Even Lavonte is starting to get shown up by the rookie middle LB. And as for the Bucs secondary…..we need one.

  22. Charlie V Says:

Some people call it “putting a spin” on a story. I call it lying. The Revis lie is just one of many. I would not believe anything Lovie says. He has zero credibility with the fans and it appears with his players as well. The sooner Lovie is fired the sooner the Bucs can rebuild. Cut the cancer from the body before it does more damage!

  23. passthebuc Says:

If you don’t care what you put on the field, why would you complain if I don’t watch? So I’m a bad fan and your a bad organization. Next.

  24. D-Rome Says:

The sooner Lovie is fired the sooner the Bucs can rebuild.

    NEWSFLASH…

The Bucs are rebuilding now. Rebuilding takes time.

  25. bucrightoff Says:

NEWSFLASH: Very little has been built since Lovie got here. In fact Lovie is responsible for creating additional holes upon arrival. An average coach has us 4-2 right now, Lovie has us 2-4. He’s not even an average coach for goodness sakes. Stop acting like we have a coach that makes other franchises envious.

  26. flmike Says:

Face it, his resume on it’s own merits sucks…everything he has done or accomplished in the NFL was based on the brilliance of others…Dungy, Vermil, Angelo…He learned under Dungy, was handed a playoff ready defense in St. Louise, was handed a Super Bowl ready team in Chicago…once he was elevated to his highest level of incompetence, given total control of a team (twice I might add) he failed. He’s a failure as a Head Coach and needs to go, period.

  27. Fsuking Says:

We should be 5-1 with the easy ass schedule we have had and the talent of our offense. Isn’t it the coaches Job to get us ” Tennessee ready”? When your coach basically says we are gonna lose because we are ill prepared after an entire offseason, that is a cry for help. He’s lost, the NFL has passed him by. He learned a great way to run a defense from Dungy and Kiffin, parlayed that into a head coaching job and preceded to beat the same system to death for 14 years. He has also forgone scouting players to focus on reading stat sheets from from 6 years ago and deciding to see if they still got it. Someone tell me how this clown got hired again after not making the playoffs with a 7-1 start. That is a sign of 2-14 and 24-0 blown leads in that guys future. Also below .500 as a coach! He should go coach high school!

  28. Fsuking Says:

It’s kind of Mark Dominick’s fault too though he is the one who hired the two turd head coaches before us, creating a situation where the fanbase was desperate for a guy who has won an NFL game before.

  29. Joe Says:

It’s kind of Mark Dominick’s fault too though he is the one who hired the two turd head coaches before us, creating a situation where the fanbase was desperate for a guy who has won an NFL game before.

Nope. Dominik did not hire Raheem. That was the Glazers. Remember, Dominik was hired just hours after Raheem, literally a few hours.

As much as many would like to punch Dominik, not even the dumbest of dumb general managers would hire a guy not only without interviewing him, but without interviewing any other candidates.

  30. Pick6 Says:

it’s tricky…all of this incompetence is what led to us finally having a franchise QB in the fold, so you have to sort of be grateful for it. but on the other hand, the indefensible stupidity of who is shipped out of town, the brazen way that this organization has just pointed a gun at its foot and just fired away….it boggles the mind and it has to stop before we waste what little talent we do have left to build around.

  31. Pick6 Says:

@Charlie V “Some people call it “putting a spin” on a story. I call it lying.”

it is really strange. for a guy revered as a moral pillar and a man of faith, he seems to revel in simple, pointless deception. at least when belichick deceives people he is attempting to win. Lovie will tell the world something that extracts no advantage for the buccaneers, and then just go on and do what he always intended to do, which happens to be the opposite of what he says. the only people he has questioning his statements are the people who ought to have significant trust in him – the players, local media, and the fans

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

There it is. We shall now call Lovie “THE SPINMASTER”. He is pretty smooth at those press conferences though. Weaving and spinnin away from critical questions. Who knows he just might be..THE GRANDMASTER of the Spin!
