Texans “Get Away With It”

Bucs CB Alterraun Verner strongly hints NFL referees look the other way on Texans’ misdeeds.

Interesting words from second string (?) cornerback Alterraun Verner earlier this week.

When talking to the Tampa Bay pen and mic club Thursday, Verner not so subtly hinted the Texans are not on the up and up.

In fact, Verner said the Texans “get away” with things most teams don’t.

“Sometimes you feel like you need a little advantage by – I wouldn’t say holding – but just being a little bit more physical,” Verner said. “It’s definitely tough now, especially when you have those big guys and they kind of get away with it a little more than we do. It’s the way the game is evolving. We have to learn how to deal with it. That’s the name of the game. It’s more challenging but we can still get the job done.”

What exactly is Verner suggesting? Joe isn’t sure, but Verner sure seemed to imply the Bucs never try to push the envelope, but other teams do — and get away with it?

If this is true, this is outrageous! So the Bucs follow the letter of the law of the NFL and never push the envelope? So someone then explain to Joe how it is the Bucs have 23 penalties as a team through two games, third-most in the NFL?

Powers to be may be ruining this sport…

Very interesting statement, and I don’t believe he is that far off base, we have been called on a lot of BS flags but yet a seatle player damn near rips a guys head off and is only fined 10k seriously???

  3. Espo Says:

You mean, we don’t have the most penalties?

  4. Stanglassman Says:

Maybe it’s because they call it on the Bucs and not so much on other teams. I thought the Saints game was called alright. The Titans game was pretty bad only to find out it was the Refs 1st game.

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

The refs live to throw the flags on the penalty laden Bucs, I expect more of the same tomorrow.

  6. ndog Says:

That triping call last week was ridiculous along with the no personal foul call on Louis Murphy when it was the exact same call they made on us the week before.

  7. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @ndog

Agree on those two penalties. Those were clearly blown calls.

  8. RIs_Buc Says:

Joe, Thats not how I understood it at all…

Not that we dont push the envelope, but that other teams get away with things (holding) a little more than we do. Or the big WRs get away with holding more than the CBs.

  9. DefenseRules Says:

Another case of making mountains out of molehills Joe?

The Bucs for several years garnered a very bad reputation with the refs obviously (remember what ‘The Hawk’ went through?). It keeps carrying on over (as at the start of Game 1?).

The Bucs definitely push the envelope … they just don’t get away with it. Refs are obviously keeping a close eye on them. You don’t get to be in the top 10% of most-penalized teams by being passive.

And the question-mark after ‘second-string’ is kind of a low blow. Alterraun Verner is an excellent CB who’ll prove to be one of our more valuable FA pickups as the year goes on.

  10. David Says:

I think he was talking about WR’s vs. DB’s. But he might as well been talking bout our Bucs in general becuz it seems they miss one or two calls for us at least in every game. But never miss any against us it seems.

Has anyone ever seen a ball moved 4 inches on a replay for field position. EVER.

  12. The original "Kevin" Says:

Flags are ruining the game. When there are more yards on penalties that one of thw twams total yards than it out of hand. It quiets the crowds…it slows down the games….it takes out a lot of emotion. Im not there yet obviously….but Im headed in the direction of being done with watching this league. There seems to be very little integrity that is evenly spread to all 32 teams.

  13. Joe Says:

    Flags are ruining the game.

Yeah. Have to admit whenever there is a big play, right away start looking for a flag. 🙁 The NFL has come to that.

  14. BuccaneEric75 Says:

You’re right Joe, every time we have a big play, the first thing I say is ” where is the flag?”

  15. Bucco Brice Says:

The refereeing is horrible. Every game is getting unwatchable. Bucs always get the sh*tty end of things….

  16. Bucco Brice Says:

    Let them play…too many calls

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

Well joe, its pretty clear he said that other teams get away with it more times than the bucs do. And i completely agree with that. Bucs hardly get close calls to go their way. They always get flagged on close calls. Just like that damn tripping call. Did he trip him? Technically yes, but it was incidental and shouldnt have been flagged. I feel like we constantly get borderline calls against us. While other teams can do no wrong. (I bet 100% of fans feel the same way for their team tho)

    NFL the Nother Flag League

I’m sure many of you guys watched the Gators – Vols game. It was a barnburner. Nutty 4th down reception to the house for the Gators to win it. there was another observation I made. There were at least 3 plays that should have been reviewed and could have gone the Gators way. I also thought the Gators got shafted on the penalty calls. It reminded me of the Bucs. I can’t help my emotions and I’m obviously biased during the games when complaining about the officiating but we truly get the short end of the stick.

  20. Paul Says:

I saw Louis Murphy get speared in the helmet when he was a defenseless receiver and no penalty. A play earlier in that game we got called on a less flagrant defenseless receiver hit. I buy what Verner is saying

  21. LargoBuc Says:

So many bs calls against us. If the Bucs ever hope to be a top team again, we not only have to get past other teams, but the refs too. And that seems impossible. Week one, what grounds did that ref have to move the ball back? With no real explanation, it leads many to speculate that it was a fix to get Marcus over and keep Jameis down. And it was 21-7 so if they dont move the ball back and potentialy we score to make it 21-14 and give our defense more rest, that could change the entire game with that one call! They moved the ball back and gave the NFL what they wanted. To help their golden biy Mariota and keep smearing Jameis. Between the refs and the natl media, Jameis has some real heat. Gotta love how Last week, Jameis’ win is being downplayed and Mariota getting his arse kicked is being spun as he had a great game but his team let him down. Really makes me question the shield sometimes.

He isn’t saying that the Bucs don’t commit penalties. He’s saying that other teams get away with it more. That the refs are biased.

And they are…thanks to Goldson having been on the team (who told them he didn’t care if they liked the way he hit) and Schiano getting on their nerves. There’s bad blood there.

For example…does any team get away with more penalties than the Seahawks? I don’t believe so. The other teams still commit them, as do the Seahawks. They just don’t brag about committing them like Goldson did.

I do the exact same thing. But to be fair…I did that the year we won the superbowl too.

The refs decide games. Period. Been that way a long time, even if the NFL tries to deny it.
