Mike Evans talks to Joe after today’s loss

Mike Evans realizes what every Bucs fan saw: he dropped at least three very catchable passes in key spots.

It’s a very different game if Evans squeezes those balls this afternoon in Houston from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

After the game, Evans told Joe and other reporters on the scene to hang the loss on him.

“I put this on me. There was a lot of plays I should have made on third downs that I didn’t come up with,” Evans said. “Offense played great. You know, it’s up to me to make a couple of plays and then could have put us over the hump.

“There was a couple of tough catches that I’m capable of making. You know, If I want to be the best, I gotta make those plays. I didn’t make most of them. I didn’t make most of them. If I would have made them, then we would have had a better chance to win.”

It was ugly. Different ballgame if Evans squeezes the rock, what top first-round picks are supposed to do.

And Evans is right. Despite a 100-yard game, Evans will never be considered great if he can’t be consistent. The two always go together.

Joe sure hopes Evans didn’t fall under whatever spell doomed Michael Clayton after his incredible rookie season.

    Whatever Hands of Stone 2.0

  2. bucrightoff Says:

If I had said Friday the offensive line would be by far the best unit today, who thought we’d score 9 points? What a wasted day offensively, should have been better.

  3. Dave Says:

It was evenly matched. Bucs lost because 5 to 6 dropped passes, penalties, and missed kicks.
Even with the lopsided running game if you take away those things, they could have one this

  4. Trubucfan22 Says:

Even with 100 yards, he had a terrible game. Winston trusted him time and time again, but he failed to convert. We should have spread the ball more. Murphy and jackson are also great play makers. There was no meed to force feed evans with 20 targets.

  5. Dreambig Says:

Today Mike Evans = Michael Clayton. His drops cost first downs and points today. But he wasn’t the only one, there were other drops, bad throws and a defense that couldn’t cover, couldn’t stop the run, couldn’t rush the passer and couldn’t tackle. Other than that we were great!

  6. Tampa Tony Says:

Dude needs to learn to not initiate contact with dbs.

  7. NewTampaChris Says:

Evans’ game was every bit as bad as Brinda’s.

  8. BucTrooper Says:

Distinguished Bucs fans!! We have found the next Michael Clayton!! Terrific blocker, hands like he is wearing boxing gloves.

  9. FLBoyInDallas Says:

And I hope Winston doesn’t fall under whatever spell doomed JaMarcus Russell. Going 1-13 on third downs and completing only 47% of his passes puts him squarely in Russell territory. But of course Joe will give him a pass just like he continues to do for Johnny “Bust” Manziel.

I said before the season every time someone talked about the depth of our WRs and how great our top 2 WRs were that I wasn’t ready to anoint them yet because of how badly burned Michael Clayton left us

That being said, let’s not overreact to this either. First game back from injury, and hadn’t caught a pass since last year (including preseason. Playing with a new QB in a new offense. That doesn’t excuse dropped passes, but let’s give him another week or two before we start getting worried we have another one year wonder on our hands at WR

  11. Rojas_ Says:

I don’t like how Winston basically forgot about Jackson ever since the touchdown never counted. He forced to many passes to Evans. Also Murphy played great.

  12. Bucnut@ Says:

How about JW???. Lots of REALLY bad throws.

  13. K2 Says:

He won’t..he’s got a totally different attitude. He’ll get it right. He needs to focus on one play at a time. I think he was trying to make-up for not being the star so far this year. Make the caught then run…

  14. BucFan20 Says:

Switch Jackson and Evans back to where they were. Maybe he is scared where he is now. Or is he scared he may pull his hammy again?

  15. Rojas_ Says:

Jackson balled out against NO I don’t know why Winston kept his focus on Evans so much.

  16. MadMax Says:

    We couldve had Beckham Jr.

Well, it was his first game back…..I’ll give him a pass.

  17. BucYeah Says:

Bucnut they were more glaring than the drops to me

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This game wasn’t all on Evans……Winston missed some throws…Brindza missed some kicks……everybody contributed to the loss….

Some good things to take away from the game….

Kwon Alexander looks like the real deal.

Looks like the Oline did pretty well today against a good Dline

  19. Greg Says:

Ya he had some bad drops but he was still our only weapon on offense, his hands will get better and he will continue to be a impact player

  20. DB55 Says:

Any idea where I can catch the replay my eve didn’t record?

  21. Rob Says:

I know these guys know each other from previous teams and schools, but why do I appear to be more upset about the loss than Logan Mankins?

  22. Paul Says:

Thought Freeman was still out there with all those overthrows

  23. Uranus Johnson Says:

Yes, Jesus Winston wasn’t blameless, too many overthrows.

  24. Rod Says:

Evans played a terrible game, but that doesn’t take away from the fact the refs were a bunch of pieces of trash. They call that early BS PI on Evans, then let him get raped the rest of the game – then to add to the insult they call the Bucs D for PI on plays they were letting go on the other side of the ball.

Seriously have the Bucs got the benefit of any calls in the last couple of years when it counts (the Bucs got every call when it mattered the least in that last preseason game at Miami)?

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

I don’t put the blame solely on Evans for the loss. He had plenty of help. A nearly non existant pass rush gave Mallett time to find the ever present open receiver, dink and dunk. Pass D looked like they were caught in a maze. Brindza, a lack of a breeze must have thrown his aim off. Evans does push off defenders too much, also he is targeted heavily and looked tired from overuse. Winston’s accuracy was off at times. I can hear Lovie now giving the recap.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

Mike Evans haters pleeeeeaaasssssse shut up. The man had his first game back (or second…not quite sure) from injury this year!!!! SO PLEASE STOP COMPARING HIM TO MICHAEL CLAYTON AFTER HE HAD ONE BAD GAME!!!!

  27. Uranus Johnson Says:

Sad that all the Winston worshippers are feasting like a school of piranha on Mike Evans. Garnet and gold Jesus hung the guy out to dry repeatedly and needs to get his head out of his rear end before he puts the entire receiving corps on the sideline like he did to ASJ.

    It’s like a cult

  28. Lefty Says:

And for the love of God stop comparing Winston to Freeman after three games. His accuracy was shoddy for sure but allow the guy to settle in. We’ve been so bad for so long, the knee jerk reactions and opinions run amok..

  29. James Walker Says:

He is right, and it takes a man to owe up to it. Too many drops.

  30. LargoBuc Says:

I thought our receivers would win us a cpl games that we should lose. Guess not. I dont know whats going on with Mike, but its not good. Our defense held Houston to 19 points. In todays NFL that should win you alot of games.

  31. SOEbuc Says:

    LargoBuc

Whats going on is he had a bad game. Practically his first of the year since 1000 yards and 12 TDs so…

  32. Skyline Crew Says:

That was nice of Evans, but it was as much of Winston’s and others fault as well. Crappy offense all around.

  33. No better way to say it Says:

When a more than half of a QBs incompletions comes via drops.. It is hard to sit back and say the QB missed to many throws. A handful of those were on 3rd down and then VJax couldnt get his second foot down. I feel that Winston was the least of the issues on offense today.

  34. Jason McLaurin Says:

He was set up for failure because they should ‘ve been going to V jax in those situations. Winston’s distribution needs to become more timely and fluent for the success of this offense to come. I think Evans did all he could. Did you see him at the end of that drive early in the 4th he was gassed and the hamstring began bothering him again.###play4WINStonfight4LOViE

  35. lurker Says:

meek evans needs to step up.

i never said or thought he was godzilla… just one of a few good-to-great receivers in that draft…and not the best.

  36. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Ah yesssss……

    The “Ghost” of Michael Clayton

    …..his wife is fine though

  37. pick6 Says:

seems like the worst thing a buccaneer can do in this century is have a good rookie season. keep it mediocre in year 1, jameis, and you may be able to duck the curse….
