Lovie: “We Are Good Inside”

September 1st, 2015

lovie smith 0920Lovie Smith offered a telling one liner yesterday when it came to the good and the bad of his defense.

Joe asked Lovie about the health of Jacquies Smith and what defensive ends are looking strong.

Lovie said there’s hope for 2014 Bucs sacks leader Smith returning on opening day, but Lovie also said his defensive ends aren’t balancing or complementing the guys inside them.

“Jack Smith is getting better. That is not just a standard answer. He is,” Lovie said. “He won’t play this week, but hopefully he’ll be ready for the Tennessee game.

“As far as our defensive line play overall, we weren’t pleased with it the last game. It’s as simple as that. First third down we need containment and Gerald McCoy probably has a sack. We need more from it. We ask an awful lot from it. We are good inside, but our defensive ends have to step up. It was good to get T.J. Fatinikun back in there the other night. We’re still looking. There is still hard competition. That’s why this game is very important for a lot of guys to show us something.”

That’s pretty tough talk from Lovie on his D-Ends, and quality praise for the defensive tackles coming off a bad game for the defense.

The poor “containment” Lovie referenced on the initial Browns third down was right out of a blooper reel.

Gerald McCoy was about to sack Josh McCown in the pocket when left defensive end Larry English was rag-dolled by an offensive lineman and thrown to the ground right at McCoy’s feet. McCoy went down like a bowling pin and McCown scampered for a first down.

If English holds containment, maybe McCoy still misses the sack, but McCown doesn’t run to convert on 3rd-and-6.

    Looooong season ahead.

  2. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Especially when the defensive injuries start…probably in game 1.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

    hahahahahah!!!

The sad part was that Old man McCown played terribile! he was holding onto the ball way too long. He did not pull the trigger when his targets were open some of the time. A real offense and that game would have been worse!!!

Buc1987 is right!! it will be a long and passive system. The Bucs have a top 5 pick on lock!!!

Can we talk about our mock drafts or do we have to wait until the first game!!!

  4. Richbucsfan Says:

Careful Buc1987 you’ll be called a troll or worse for your honest appraisal. I agree with you.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

LOL…It’s a Bucs life, seige the day Realist.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

Rich…oh no too late they’ve already come after me too.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Cheer up 87 bucs are on the verge

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Ha ha ha cheer up. I’m just fine. I know what this team is going to be…. I got what I wanted out of the draft though. I still got what I wanted with or without Lovie being here. He got us 2-14 and I got what I wanted. So I’ll thank him for that unless he ruins Jameis beyond repair….

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

The funny part is that we constantly hear how the “system works, but it was a missed assignment” that lets the scheme get shredded!!!

But no, Lovie is predictable, passive, and constantly excusing his scheme!! I hope that a couple of years from we are not talking about what great players GMC and LVD were and that it was sad then never got to play in a playoff game!!!

  10. OneLove Says:

    hahahahahah!!!

The happy part was that Old man McCown played terrific! he was holding onto the ball way too long(THATS WHAT SHE SAID!). He pulled the trigger when his targets were going up against Jonathan Banks. A real offense(like the Titans with a rookie QB in Week 1)and that game could have been worse!!!

Buc1987 is right!! and when he says season, he’s referring to MY WANG!!!

Can we talk about how Lovie is going to win Coach of the year, or do we have to wait until the first game!!!???

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith “Now watch me whiiiip!! Now watch me Nae Nae!!!”

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

Were is StpeteBucsfan to tell us that Lovie needs 3 more years to see if he can turn this dumpster fire around????

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    87

I agree at least he gave us Jameis

  13. DB55 Says:

I watched that play like 10 times and I thought if gmc stayed in his gap rather than rushing up field (delayed) he would have gotten the sack bc George pushed mclown up in the pocket. Obviously I wrong.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

    @tmaxcon

If you want High draft picks and excuses, then Lovie is your coach!!!!

  15. DB55 Says:

Spent some time watching Jameis last night. He did take a step back on Saturday. Specifically with check downs. Vs the vikes he didn’t use check downs to the RBs. Vs the bengals he used them all game for some positive yards but vs Browns he didn’t get the ball to the hot routes at all! Something to work on but other than that the kid looks really good.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I prefer to lose at least one game before I’m drawn into next year’s draft picks…..at what point do you guys want us to start tanking again?

  17. Nick Says:

so I wrote all of your names down…. when the season is done, this year or next, and Bucs are back in playoffs, will you pretend you were in lovie’s corner the whole time?

  18. chocolatecvb Says:

Can anyone tell me why Larry English is still on the roster? Waiting for Jac and T.J. to return or what?

  19. Carl's Toe Says:

We were better under Raheem and Schiano! Lovie has sank the ship! Bears fans warned us! Greenhorn GM gets fleeced by Lions GM again!

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

Gawd! So many stupid trolls today.
You sad, clueless little whiners dont realize it, but after 10 years of stupidity- the team is finally being built right

Thru the Draft, and a few key free agents.
This team was as bad as I’ve seen, when they hired Lovie.
He couldnt fix 10 years of stupidity in one year.
And no Trolls, he cant fix it in 8 years.

8 years of horribly drafting, and aging Vets deteriorating.

It wont be fixed this year. But it will be improved.
And thats what you want. No wizard wss gonna materialize here- and tun this Garbage around in 2 years.
    Nobody.

But I believe Lovie will have a competative, winning team here by year 3.
Even that is a friggin miracle!

So, really Stupid whinners- enjoy your PMS bitching while you can. Sit on your couch, and pretend to be all knowing, inbetween hitsvof frenh oinion dip.
Your shining glory,of “I told you so”, if your otherwise unremakable and underachieving lives.

Because next year- this team will shut you up, for years to come!!
Enjoy your negative nancy moment. Its almost over

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

” and no trolls, he cant fix it in 2 years”
Pretty sure we will be winning the NFC in 8 years!

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

I still say the Bucs finish with about 7 wins, give or take one. Now looking over the schedule it’s tougher than I thought finding that number. Calling this an easy schedule seems ridiculous.

  23. Joe Cool Says:

Bucs = NFC South Champs. Mark it dude. Ya bunch of Negative Nancies. STAY HOME!!! MORE RROM FOR ME AT THE GAMES!!!

  24. JAB83 Says:

Let me say this… Both negative and positive prospectives are needed for achieving the ideal outcome of any true sustainable success… However this should always be done in balance and regardless of the bitterest of truths, lies should always be met with utter distain and the perpetuators should be disregarded as the scum they are for ling!!! So if you find yourself ling realize your scum!!! That said, consider the negative in balance with the positive and maintain the focus and goal of success… If we ALL do this honestly and support this team… I predict we will be SUPER BOWL bound by the end of the decade… Reason for this is because in all HONESTY, our favorite team is doing it best and making strides in the right direction for a change… For it to work they need support in balance to theyre efforts… No reason to not give it to them at this point…

  25. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m here Tmax LMAO I’ve NEVER said three more years. I’m still on board with a ten win season THIS year barring injury and MRSA.

We’ll see. It’ll all end up on the scoreboard. If we win ten you owe me what?
If we win four or less I owe you what? My low end for bailing on Lovie this year is six wins. I believe we have 8-8 talent but I’m the blog optimist and I think there are intangibles that will take us to ten…that and a soft schedule in a horrid division.

Time will tell not all this typing on a keyboard.

  26. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Bucsfan37

Calling this an easy schedule seems ridiculous.

N.O. has NO defense…worse than ours last year..and Junior Gallette arguably their best player is gone. Drew Brees is old and his top target is gone.
Sean Payton is over N.O. and looking for his next gig at this point.

Atlanta is in the same shape as us…which is why they scare me most of all. I think Quinn will improve their defense I have to hope their bad OL and the loss of Koetter will continue to handicap them.

Carolina is doomed to mediocrity…Cam is not bad..he’s not great..he IS inconsistent and he has lost his top receivers each of the past two years in Steve Smith and now Kelvin Benjamin. Their stud RB is getting old

So there you go. Sweep two of them and split with the other and you’re halfway to ten already.

Jacksonville? Ooooooaaa. The Deadskins? Poor Gruden doesn’t have a QB..perhaps MG8 next year?

That stretch withe Dallas…Philly and Indy is a bit brutal.

St. Louis and Chicago are not world beaters.

Factor in that we’ll lose a couple we should win and we’ll win some we should lose…remember when we beat the Super Bowl Champion Seahawks in their own house with MG8 at QB. Oh that’s right moron Schiano stopped the hurry up defense and handed that right back to Seattle…but you get my point…as they say in the NFL on any given Sunday.

  27. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    oops hurry up offense.
