“Get Your Depth”
September 26th, 2015All that talk about the mentoring of Vincent Jackson, but what wisdom is he really imparting?
Mattress-in-the yard Mike Williams raved about his impact and leadership. So has Mike Evans. The list is longer.
Jackson, who often avoids details and speaks in clichés, is opening up a bit these days, courtesy of his own show on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Fridays on WDAE-AM 620.
Last night, Jackson explained that he’s all over receivers to “get your depth” when running routes. If you need to run eight yards and cut, then you damn well make sure it’s not 7 1/2 yards. None other than Hall of Fame receiver James Lofton is the genesis of this focus, Jackson explained. Lofton was Jackson’s position coach with the Chargers, and he was a stickler for proper depth in routes and spacing.
Jackson said he also guides young receivers to dive deep into understanding the offense, so they won’t limit options for the play caller.
“I think the biggest thing that can help these young guys Don’t try to learn just simple positions, learn concepts. Learn alignments. A lot of our plays are going to be built around concepts: left hash, right hash, 3-by-1s — we’re talking about three receivers on one side, one receiver on the other side — or 2-by-2.
“I really try to keep guys from hey, just learning the X position, or the F position, or the Z position. Go ahead and learn concepts. Because when we can interchange, and when we’re running that up tempo stuff, we’re not switching sides. You gotta be able to play any position.”
Jackson also emphasized how much he loves Dirk Koetter’s offense and how easily it can change tempos is exciting and new to him.

James Lofton also worked with Mike Evans last year

It seems to me that under the L&L regime, that a new culture is being fostered in the clubhouse. The vets are more interested in team and as such the young players are drinking the coolaid. When a player goes down, the team stands by in support,
there seems to be joy in playing for the bucs!
Leadership from the vets had to be given by players who leaded by example, The past few years free agents were mercs, who came here for the $$$, but not to win. There is a foundation being built here and we seem to finally have a chemistry that is only found in winning atmospheres. The next few years are going to be fun for buccaneers fans!

Exactly Louis.
Thats why we’re overpaying Mankins.
Because is a football God.
He was a Patriot. A close brother in arms to Brady.
We are trying to establish a lasting team dynamic.
Go Bucs!

@Louis
Great post. I especially loved this observation.

Hey Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun,
“Give my rookie QB one walk thru season, that’s all I’ll ask. One walk thru season my friend.”
You know this might be what the Coach/GM have already asked of ownership?
SO far Mr. Winston is looking to be growing nicely competent as a NFL QB. His playing time is what he needs to get up to speed of everything happening around and to him. Let us all hope that happens more positively than negatively starting with today’s game.
Go! Bucs!
