Frazier Worried About Mallett’s Arm
September 24th, 2015Joe is on record suggesting, until proven otherwise, Houston quarterback Ryan Mallett is just a sloppy quarterback.
Look, the only reason he is starting is because Brian Hoyer played himself out of a gig.
(As demonstration of how depth charts aren’t worth the price of a good roll of toilet paper, Hoyer is still listed on Houston’s depth chart as the starter.)
Believe it or not, Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is actually concerned about Mallett. Really. That’s what Frazier said when Joe asked him about Mallett.
“Well, he has a very strong arm and we think he is an accurate passer as well,” Frazier said of Malett. “But that arm strength and his ability to get the football down the field, that’s a concern. And he is familiar with this offense having worked with [Bill O’Brien] in the past. He is a guy we will have to contend with, with that live arm he does have.”
Mallett looked like hot garbage against the Stinking Panthers. Now Joe doesn’t know which Bucs defense will show up Sunday in Houston, whether it is the defense that got blowtorched by a rookie quarterback making his NFL debut on the road, or the defense that mauled Drew Brees in his own crib.
If the latter defense makes an appearance in Houston, then it could be a very long day for Mallett.

I believe that is coach speak. What’s he going to say? Oh yeah Mallet is awful and we should eat him up. Not only bulletin board material but also raises expectations needlessly with the fans and media.
BTW let’s see how Mallet plays this Sunday. Last Sunday he was getting his first real regular season action and against a very good Panthers defense on the road.
Let’s hope he is really as bad as the Panthers made him look.

Or is it the defense that got beat by a number of 4th string QB’s last year. Not enough data points to know at this time. Let’s sit back and watch the progress on both sides of the ball this year. Going to be a fun ride!

Mallett backed up Brady for a few years and was a pretty high prospect out of college. I wouldn’t take it lightly either. You take things lightly in this league, you get burnt.

Yep just coach talk.

I agree with StPeteBucsFan.

I originally had this Sunday as a win…one of the two wins in the first half of the season. But I didn’t expect last week to be a win, so if we do win, we are ahead of the ball game.
Incidentally…StPeteBucsFan was right in predicting 10 wins? Would certain “fans” still want him gone?
I think so. Because they are bigger fans of being right than they are of the team.

HOT GARBAGE?!!!!! LOL
Go rewatch the game… stats can be deceiving, but WR’s played terrible that game and I counted maybe 7 drops wide open!!!
Now that was coaches talk saying “we are concerned about his accuracy” but Mallet should of had a way better game if the Wr’s did there job.
Should be a good game, hope bucs dont let off the gas if Foster/hopkins dont play.. every game is crucial!

These are the type of games we Buc fans should worry about. Mallet is no Brady. But if we do get the same or better rush we got against Brees? We will lose bigtime. We are not the kind of team that can underestimate anybody!! Even a college team cold defeat us if we do not do our homework and are not fired up like we were against the Saints. I’m anxious to see if we will still have the FIRE.

Ryan Mallet does have a cannon for an arm! First things first, we NEED TO STOP THE RUN!! Let’s go BOYS!!!
“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “I’m from Texas baby!”
September 24th, 2015 at 2:45 pm
No Mike, a college team will NEVER be able to beat the WORST NFL team. Just stop. That statement will never hold water.
September 24th, 2015 at 3:34 pm
I hope someone focuses some attention on some guy named WATT!!!! or Jamesi could have a very long day
September 24th, 2015 at 3:45 pm
I agree Joe. Ryan Mallet is not a threat. Inaccurate quarterbacks throw interceptions against zone defenses. I expect us to intercept the ball at least 3 times.

@mike
Joe Cool is right. Even the worst NFL team could beat the best college team. After all, the NFL is nothing more than a collection of college All-Stars

I seem to recall last year, when a succession of backup QB’s started against the Bucs and lit us up like it New Year’s Eve. Let’s not get complacent (like I did last year when I heard Derek Anderson was starting in place of Cam Newton). He ended up throwing 24 out of 34 for 230 yards against us.

@Buc Bonzai
Like you I believe the Bucs will be a better team in the 2nd half of the season than these early games. For my 10 win prediction I was counting a 2-2 split in the first four. That would get us out of the gate in good enough shape to finish strong. But I thought we would beat Tennessee lost at Houston and split the N.O. Carolina games. But I would love a win Sunday for all that it sets up.
We’d be coming home on a high note, probably crowd RayJay once again, facing a Carolina team that is solid but beatable. Even if we lose Sunday but beat the Panthers we’d be in strong shape..2-2 2-0 in the division. I figured us at 4-2 in the division. Thought we’d split with two opponents and sweep one.
I thought Lovie failed miserably at having this team prepared for the Titans. But he rebounded nicely against N.O. Again I just need to see six wins minimum and I will not jump on the fire Lovie bandwagon. Anything less against this schedule is not enough, unless massive injuries strike.

Mallet or Drew Brees? Which one is better?
You make the call….
September 24th, 2015 at 5:28 pm
To be fair, Derek Anderson is a notch or two above Mallet (Anderson has some decent games during his career)
September 24th, 2015 at 6:07 pm
Houston’s receivers dropped six passes. Mallett completed just 5-of-20 passes aimed over 10 yards. When Mallett was under pressure, he failed to complete even a single pass, going 0-for-16. He only completed 48% of his passes. Besides Watt.. Clowney could terrorize Winston. He recorded three quarterback hurries while locking down the edge against the run. With Watt, Wilfork, Clowning and Cushing, running on this team at home could prove difficult. Once again it will come down to how the OL line plays, whether or not the team will win. Evan Smith is out, Joe Hawley in. Vegas had the Texans as 6.5 point favorite, now the line has dropped to 4 points. The staff at Pro Football Focus has 11 Texans, 0 Bucs. Just the way we like it..

Remember bucs fans, TB is best at making crappy QBs look like future HOFers. Just a word of warning
September 24th, 2015 at 8:26 pm
The Rams 3rd stringer and Derek Anderson beat this d last year…
Mallet had the Texans on the verge of tying the Panthera last week. Bucs can’t take them lightly. Especially when the middle of the field is always open on this passive defense

I get the feeling this game will be a difficult matchup for the Bucs to come out on top. An excellent effort and a turnover or two in the Bucs favor could put this in the win column. If the Bucs can pull it out, that will be a huge confidence builder going forward.

Frazier is dead on the money with this and needs to have the defensive backs ready to play the skies and the lanes in this one. They’re going to do a lot of passes too because they have no running game so we shouldn’t blitz but put more in coverage and rely on a three man rush. Lets see if Jac Smith can act as a 3-4 type of outside linebacker and cover a little. Pass rush in timely situations and downs. I think he may can get an interception as well as a sack this week.###play4WINStonfight4LOViE
