Lovie Calling Plays: So?

OLB Danny Lansanah discusses Lovie Smith calling defensive plays.

It sure seems like a big deal that Lovie Smith ripped the headset, in a manner of speaking, off the head of defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Lovie did his best today to dodge the question about him calling defensive plays, saying in his entire head coaching career he always had a hand in calling plays.

What Lovie didn’t say is that he has taken over those duties for the Bucs, but Lavonte David confirmed it.

Outside linebacker Danny Lansanah seemed to verbally shrug his shoulders at the thought. Lansansh did not deny Lovie was calling plays but he noted what is more important than the coach calling plays is players getting the friggin’ job done.

“I just go out there and play,”Lansanah said. “Whoever is calling the plays, whatever is called, I just try to execute what is called.”

Joe cannot disagree with Lansanah. If players don’t get the job done, then it doesn’t matter if it is Lovie, Leslie or Chuck Noll is calling the plays.

What this does mean, however, is that Lovie felt it was in the team’s best interest — and for his own job security — to take over this responsibility. That basically leaves Frazier as little more than a figurehead.

I think it’s a huge mistake to take Lansanna off the field.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

It is just hard to imagine. that the Bucs have not played 1 game in year two, yet Lovie is on his second Defensive coordinator and third offensive coordinator!!!!!
This has been anything but stable, which this coach was supposed to bring to this franchise!!!!!!!!

  7. BucinNC Says:

    Nails and lasagna

  8. BucinNC Says:

Maybe Chinese food and chocolate pudding

  9. Gus Says:

Joe he is much more than a figure head. He will be huge in helping with game planning for the team we are facing. That part is huge. Play calling is a big part of the responsibility but it doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be doing anything anymore.

Watch Carter magically win the SAM linebacker “competition” to justify his unjustifiable contract. Lansanah was a nice Dominik pickup and incidentally expendable for Incompetent Lovie Smith and his lapdog Licht.
Just try to think about how many starting jobs were unearned in 2-14 2014.

    Buc realist

He took over crap. Had to clean house. A big work in progress because fans like you no longer can deal with the standard 4 year rebuild, which is still normal. Instead, fans and media deman 2-3 year turn around. It can happen, but rare.
Anyway, he basically had to scrub half the roster and go through finding the correct coaches. I would rather get rid of the OC or DC right away instead of letting them longer around for years if they are the wrong people.
Hopefully they got the OC correct and he stays with Winston for at least 3 years.
Point is, why do negative all the time? Being a realist versus being negative are not the same thing. And you are not a realist 80% of the time, you are just negative for the sake of being negative.
If they had the same coordinators from last year you’d be bitching about that

The way LBers are is the way we are goin into the season. All athletic, ball hawks and swarm to the man with the ball. Megakwon still has something to prove, but all those underneath oasses will be covered this year.

  13. The original "Kevin" Says:

Who thinks Adrian Claybore gets double digit sacks this year in Atlanta?????!!!!!!!

  14. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Dave, he took over a team that was decent with some talent and knocking on the terrible nfc south, he got rid of 3 starting OL and made incompetent personnel moves…. it just gets worse… lovies gone after this 3-13 season

  15. BucsFan85 Says:

Wouldn’t surprise me Kevin. Players leaving and doing well with other teams has been somewhat of a trend in our team’s history.

I didn’t hear LVD say Lovie was now the regular play caller. But then again, the volume was so bad I had to cup my ears to hear any of it.

What I thought I heard was the question “What’s it like with coach calling the plays as opposed to Frasier?” or something like that.

Personally, I don’t see what the big deal is. Lovie is a defensive coach and he wants to be more hands on. If the defense does well, Frasier will get HC job offers again either way.

However…I have not heard anything about Lovie making this move permanently yet. Not that I would have a problem with it. I don’t and have never cared for Frasier. I’m not opposed to a HC taking over playcalling…so long as there is still a coordinator.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Clayborn will barely see the field.
