Dirk Koetter: “Every Single Day He’s Breaking Two Or Three Runs”
August 12th, 2015It’s often tough to judge training camp running plays.
Buccaneers defensive players don’t tackle running backs to the ground, and there’s not always real hitting on every play.
So the practice film is critical to determine what really was a breakaway run, and what was just a pretend one.
Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter shined light on that film this afternoon after practice. Speaking with Steve Duemig, of WDAE-AM 620, Koetter outlined how Doug Martin has emerged as the No. 1 running back.
“When Doug came back in the offseason, his weight was up, he hadn’t been working out,” Koetter said. “But he has dedicated himself to his conditioning. He’s 20 pounds lighter. He’s like 208 pounds right now. He looks quick. He’s got a smile on his face. Every single day he’s breaking two or three runs.”
Joe likes the sound of those breakaway runs. Only tape can really reveal that. And Martin sure does look confident and loose.
It’s interesting that Martin came into camp back in April a little overweight and, presumably, a little soft. He typically played at about 220 pounds. Perhaps Martin decided to fully rest his body and not prepare for the season until reporting to camp? For some guys, that’s a fantastic way to stay fresh.

Hope he remembers how to break tackles. Wide open runs aren’t there very often.

@JOE
What happened to titans watch today? Didn’t want to have say Mariota still has no picks in camp but Winston has a bunch?

Jody, how ignorant are you?

Dougie Fresh. All he needs is the guys up front moving bodies. Even Barry Sanders needed blocking.

Jody is exactly as ignorant as robert9

We’re going to need 2200 yards this season from our RB’s. Doug should give us 1,000, we can get the rest from our other backs.

@ LakelandBuc
Let us hope that the other 1200 yards does not come from Jameis… running for his life.

The Bucs running game will have an opportunity to be very good this year and hopefully, led by Doug Martin. My views are based on evaluating the first depth chart with Smith at LT and Gilkey at RG. Both players are hugh, tough and very good run blockers. I believe Dirk Koetter will focus on developing a run game first and a three and five step drop back passing game to protect Winston, second. Preseason, this year, is very important for Koetter and the offensive line to establish themselves and it’s going to be fun to watch the growth and development.
