Can’t Blame Smith (On Snaps)

August 29th, 2015
Evan Diedrich Smith

A sigh of relief about snaps.

If one is to pump the pompons in the air and play cheerleader, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, had an up-and-down night tonight. Sort of like the stock market the past week.

Enough bad plays to make you want to run into traffic and enough good plays to calm your nerves.

The offensive line may have gotten worked over, Jameis may have struggled. but at least you can’t blame Evan Smith.

Sort of.

Before tonight, the only times this preseason when Jameis looked remotely comfortable was when backup center Jeremiah Warren was snapping him the ball. That’s because the rest of the centers were, well, um, inconsistent.

Smith did not play last week but did start tonight. Joe monitored Smith closely, and while Smith played into the second half with Jameis at quarterback, Joe did not see any issues snapping the ball, whether it was with Jameis behind center or in shotgun formation.

Jameis’ struggles had nothing to do with Smith.

So at least tonight, Smith’s snapping was never an issue. Blocking? That’s a different story.

His snaps in the shot gun are soooo slow. It’s like tossing a ball to someone who’s never caught a ball before. I actually think i saw the ball turn over a couple of times. The guys sucks. All there is to it.

Patience. There are going to be a lot of growing pains this year but this team will be dangerous later in the season.

His blocking was horrible….no prob tho…i think this game was a charade…sort of. I saw the lucky breaks the browns got where they got us (on certain plays) in the beginning but then it looked like we just gave up….bleh, preseason!

Dirk Koetter didn’t put too much into this game, he mostly had Jameis throwing into a tight window. Jameis threw one pass to his backs in the first half, and that went to Charles Sims with 22 seconds left in the first half. He was throwing passes up field to his wideouts on 3rd and 1. We won’t be seeing this during the regular season. This was Jameis first test against a 3-4 defense, he should be watching film tomorrow. But overall, it was a preseason game, and a lot of the players that played tonight won’t be around for long. I can’t really evaluate a preseason game, it’s really an audition for 90 players. Some will get the part, and some won’t. I’m excited about this team, I believe we win the NFC South this season. GO BUCS

Warhop is a stud. He has managed to create first, second, and third team OL’s that are horrible. It looked horrible from the third deck. Like a sieve all night long, especially up the gut. Jameis is gonna get killed.

    Jaboobuc

    Sums it up perfectly

  7. Jason McLaurin Says:

Thats the part a lot of fans are starting to talk about. With Evan Smith starting at center tonight we get smacked but when he didn’t start or play we were a decent group. Evan Smith should be cut and a competition between Marpet and Warren should be hatched. Hes not a good blocker at all and hes coming off as an unseated in that locker room with all those players pulling for Warren to be a day one starter

  8. RealBucFan Says:

Evan Smith is not a starter in this league. If the Packers drop you for a 5th round rookie it tells you everything. They knew he could not call protections worth a s***, and they did not want Rodgers killed. But for some reason we think this guy with a gut that hangs over his belt, is a true nfl starter, it’s sad. The guy is horrid. Watch his protection calls, watch his missed blocks, watch him get pushed into the RB or Jameis. Is pathetic.

  9. Destro44 Says:

Jaboo is absolutely right. Smith’s shotgun snaps take an eternity. Jameis was tryig to reach to get to them sooner. Warren had quick crisp snaps. The quicker the snap the sooner your eyes are on the field and the ball can get out. With Smith’s snaps one of our O linemen has already been beaten by the time it arrives.

  10. SOEbuc Says:

Another agreement with jaboo here. I thought I saw it turn over too. EDS snapped it, I went to the bathroom and grabbed a beer and the ball was just about to get to jameis. Please cut that POS. He’s no good on the line and probably not the locker room

  11. PatientBucFan Says:

I agree, James would start to step back at the snap of the ball and have to step back toward the center to catch the ball so it wouldn’t fall on the ground. This didn’t happen just once. I expect a learning curve from the rookies, but not from the vets.

  12. buc4life1979 Says:

Then let us assemble “The Warren J Mob” to start over EDS…Simple as that.

  13. CC Says:

Joe…I don’t know what game you were watching? Smith’s shotgun snaps are bullsh*t.I’ve seen High scholl centers snap better than that.
