Jameis Catches First Pitch

Are the Rays scared of Jameis?

Joe has mentioned now and then how “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, has yet to throw out a first pitch at a Rays game. It just seems odd.

Well, today, as the Rays prepared to host the Orioles at the Fruitdome, Jameis actually joined in the first pitch. But he didn’t pitch.

Throwing out the first pitch was Jameis’ college coach, Jimbo Fisher of Florida State. Jameis caught the first pitch, which is usually reserved for a Rays player of some sort.

Still, no first pitch for Jameis.

Joe cannot remember the last time the Bucs had a first-round pick who didn’t throw out a first pitch at a Rays game. Hell, granny-hassling, pistol-whipping, Adderall-popping, helmet-wielding Aqib Talib threw out a first pitch. And we are talking about the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, “America’s Quarterback,” for crying out loud! It’s not like he’s Kwon Alexander.

Still, no Jameis. What is Stu scared of? Very, very odd.

Below is the video of Jameis catching the first pitch — with a little flair — courtesy of Casey Phillips of Buccaneers.com.

May have been inadvertantly outlawed by contract language

    The pitching motion is nasty.
Big league pitchers center their lives around conditioning
their arm and shoulder. If Jameis does have any shoulder
issues then throwing a baseball pitch would be the worst
thing he could do. Football throwing motion is much easier
on the shoulder compared to baseball pitching motion.

    Very true^^^^^^^

  4. Trey83 Says:

I can only assume it has to do with his contract. I would think the Bucs brass would grant a waiver if that was the only problem though.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

GMC never threw one until 2013! where is the outrage for that!!!

Or did they invited him but there was a triple team so he could not get in thru the door????

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

Jameis could of thrown left handed or underhand to preserve his arm. It does seem odd that he wouldn’t be allowed to throw a ceremonial pitch. Perhaps that pitch will come later on.

I might agree with you , if he were trying to pitch a game, but come on! It’s one toss, with absolutely no pressure for anything except to get it to the plate, which kids in high schoolcan do, without issues. And just months ago he was a decent College level pitcher. Can it with the panic, he’ll be fine, even if he does throw a first pitch, when, or if, the Rays get around to it. Besides, it’s entirely possible he was offered the pitch & did his former coach a solid, I suppose.

Pretty educated guess there. Might be right.

  9. Kevin Says:

Contract issues…maybe they will lighten up after a while…not the rays the glaziers and light.

  10. Arealbucsfan Says:

Its cuz he can pitch. Theyre afraid of him hurting the catchers hand lol

Lol! I love it REALIST sounds about right. He still would’ve beaten it.

What a truly boring sport. Football is almost upon us again phew

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    No BFD.

  14. The Real Malloy Says:

Im sorry, but throwing one pitch is not going to hinder him in any way…..so this non-sense about a pitchers throwing motion having an effect is ridiculous…

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

Buc1987 has it right, No story here!!! Come on Joe the season is around the corner and you should do something informative!!

For example you could interview an Old-timer that sat thru all the losing back in the day. There are alot of newer Buc fans that have no idea about “Paper Bag Edicate”!!! ( just in care things go south in a hurry!!)

Like, do you bring them to pre-season games? to the first home game? or do you what until the 4th game when the team is totally out of it for the year? Is it proper to draw on them? are there regulations on the eye hole size??

Many questions need to be answered!!!

Man I hope Tampa is ready for Jaboowins. I don’t think we are. He’s coming in guns blazing, full tilt 24/7 and he’s going to rub people the wrong way. Can’t wait too see the fights on the sidelines. He going to act exactly like Brady but will be critized for it. Bring the hate for he thrives on it.

Man I can’t wait to ‘chop’ down the NFC. I bet we win bc he breaks the opponents will like he did against Louisville, Florida and Miami. No matter how many times he fcks up he just comes back and wins. ‘Murica

I used to check out Joebucsfan a few times a day. Since Joe keeps referring to Winston as “Americs’s qb” for some crazy reason, I visit this site once every two weeks or so. Joe’s infatuation with Winston over the last year or so perplexes me. I cheer for all Buc players, but Winston is not “America’s qb”. Go Bucs!

  18. WS99 Says:

Realist got me laughing so hard that I’m crying over here.

  19. Jbeachbuc Says:

IDK about ” contract language ” angle. I understood his contract banned him from playing baseball, and CATCHING is baseball, just the same as PITCHING… No??

  20. Eric Says:

Did he get the glasses from McCoy?

  21. KevinM Says:

Guys Guys stop, it was because Jamies didnt want Jimbo to try and get down in a catching stance because of jimbos age and knees.

  22. Dan Says:

Pitching is clearly the part of badeball that is bad for the shoulder. And probably is specifically banned. Without realizing this would be the result. He was a pitcher.

  23. Jena W Says:

Hazarding a guess, I would think the Bucs/Glazers simply didn’t want the obvious reminder that Winston is a damn good pitcher! They do want him out and about in the community and supporting other local teams and involved with charity stuff. Good for his image and publicity for the ‘new’ Bucs.

Compromise is, Winston does the first pitch thing but in reverse by catching and adds color with Jimbo there pitching. No sees JW whip in 95 mph fast ball, no one starts clamoring for JW to be a 2 sport Tampa Bay star but JW is still out front and center garnering publicity/good will.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    LMAO@Realist.

Paper bags usually come out around weeks 6-7.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

Just hope it doesn’t get bad enough to pull out the plastic bags.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

@Bonzai…when is Jameis going to embrace the community?
