Gerald McCoy Details Dramatic Weight Loss

July 30th, 2015

McCoy mugJoe and other media types who saw Gerald McCoy practice all through the spring surely would say he was in fine shape. Perhaps the best shape of his career.

But a lot has changed in the six weeks since Tampa Bay left minicamp in June.

McCoy took to Twitter this morning to fire up Bucs fans and proclaim his new fitness numbers. They are stunning.

That’s a lot of weight for a healthy defensive tackle to lose in six weeks, and a big body fat percentage drop.

McCoy is listed at 300 pounds, and he typically plays just under that weight. So McCoy might be just 285 right now. Perhaps Logan Mankins’ new six-pack abs inspired him?

If nothing else, the always committed McCoy is setting a higher standard for himself and teammates. That’s always a great thing.

I’ll expect a lean mean pass rushing machine then.

  2. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

McCoy seems more motivated this yr than any yr before. It’s clear the losing is getting to him which is a good sign

I think he’s in for a MONSTER season. CANT WAIT

  3. Howard Cosell Says:

    “South-Bronx Paradise Diet, baby!”

  4. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Really excited to see him with Robert Nkemdiche lined up next to him next yr

  5. ColoradoBuc Says:

I hope he’s not getting too light to hold up to the run.

  6. HFXBUC Says:

He’s moving to DE. They added Melton and brought Bowers back and both play the 33technique. McCoy’s going play DE in the base Defence and shift to OLB when they line up in their hybrid press man zone 3-4-Tampa2 on passing downs. #mindblown

  7. Dick2111 Says:

Colorado Buc I agree with you. I too hope McCoy isn’t getting too light to hold up for 60 mins each game. It’s hot up in the stands in Sep & Oct, and I’m sure that the field is 10-15 degrees hotter than that. Going against 300 – 330 lb OLinemen play after play has to take its toll sooner or later.

But I’m sure that Gerald and the coaches know what weight will work best for him. Or maybe this is just an experiment on their part.

  8. SeattleBuc Says:

How bad was his knee injury last year?

  9. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Playing lighter will HELP his endurance in the heat not harm it!!!

He and his team of trainers and nutrionists are probably scientifically monitoring all of this. As long as the weight loss isn’t too rapid…12 lbs on a 300 lb man is nothing huge…or is it yyuuge?

We are talking millions and millions of $$$ here. This is not you or I deciding to lose some weight and get in shape. This has all been very carefully and scientifically planned.

And so we have two threads on out two all pro defenders showing incredible committment!! 10-6 baby! That’s an Ian BeckleS like FACT!

  10. canadian bucsfan Says:

His get off on the line of scrimmage will be even quicker. Got a new DE I think.

  11. Pickgrin Says:

Go get em Gerald. This is the year that we end the streak of No Bucs DLineman getting double digit sacks. I predict that GMC and Jack Smith will both get 10+.

  12. Ray Rice Says:

Exactly right Houdini Geraldini. “NO MORE TALKING.” No more disappearing acts after the 1st quarter.

  13. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Joe, I know what inspired McCoy. Jameis walked up to him and said ” 2-14?, really?”

  14. Tampa Tony Says:

Took him 5 years to get inspired? What a great team captain. Jameis lead this bunch of losers to a new era

  15. LakelandBuc Says:

I hope they keep GMC fresh for the 4th quarter this season.

  16. Dan Says:

To your point HFXBUC, you almost got it right. He stays at D tackle in the Base 4-3, but moves to D-End on obvious passing downs and in their nickle package. If this is accurate McCoy could most certainly play D-End in a 4 down lineman set, be it nickle or their base 4-3. Bring Melton in at D tackle on passing downs and line them both up on the right. If Melton finds his mojo, that will be tough to defend.

Bowers?….Lol. Bower’s nickname should be ‘Breather’, as in he only plays when McCoy needs a breather. He’s good and terrible!

  17. JoeNUTS Says:

GMC is really the only ALL-PRO DEF player the BUCS have at the moment. He is a lean mean fighting machine. David is close but I thought he wasnt his best last year and the NFL is prove it or lose it on an annual basis.

  18. Harry Says:

I am very much looking forward to what McCoy does this year. He is always working hard and he has a deep rotation behind him so the Bucs can give him a breather now and then. Heck, just imagine if he had a good DE in the line with him! sigh

  19. bucsbedabest Says:

Gerold McCoy is the only current All Pro. This is true. Look for several former All Pro’s to return this year including Alterraun Verner, Logan Mankins, Doug Martin and Henry Melton. First timers this year Lavonte David, Mike Evans and Jameis Winston. This is the year.

  20. Pick6 Says:

as long as he’s not on the Josh Freeman diet program it’s all good

  21. The original "Kevin" Says:

Are there really still dumbasses out there that dont like mccoy…that think he is a slacker???

    You guys are tards.

Id LOOOVE to see any of you stay on the field all game when your offense cant get a first down and still be dominant in the fourth quarter knowing your team has no chance…

You guys are full of crap

  22. Fsuking Says:

I have to vehemently disagree with the notion that the Bucs would move an all-world DT to any position other than DT. If McCoy lines up on the outside for more than 20% of his plays, I will apply for a front office position on the grounds that I may be inexperienced, but at least im not that stupid.

  23. Scott Pilgrim Says:

If you’re looking to lose weight in a “short” amount of time, then this diet might be for you. The 10-Day Turbo Diet is a weight loss program designed to burn stubborn body fat – body fat you can’t seem to get rid of. It also comes with a nutrition diet. It’s goes into the science of fat loss and it’s good for people who are 12-23 pounds over weight… It’s quite informative and it’s got some decent reviews. Here’s one review of the diet

  24. 813bucsboi Says:

if the bucs asked gmc to lose weight so he could play dt/de then I think we may be in more trouble at de than I thought. that’s like asking mike evans to bulk up so he can play wr/te…I would love to see gmc stick to his dt position and some other players like w.gholston,j.smith and g.johnson step up…maybe hes doing it to last longer on the field..maybe a quicker get off..whatever it was that made he do it..i hope it doesn’t backfire…GO BUCS!!!

  25. tval Says:

    Lmao @ howard…carl?

  26. tval Says:

If you look at fletcher cox’s impact across the eagles dline, and his similarities to gerald, i can see why they might. Reggie used to play all over the eagles dline.
