Evans Soon To Blow Up

July 15th, 2015
Getting loads of hype.

Getting loads of hype.

Yes, Joe thought Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans was special the moment Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht dubbed with him the “Godzilla” tag.

And he proved to be just that.

The guy just toyed with opposing defenses. Possessed special footwork, and oh, those hands.

It seems the NFC South already has Evans on their mind. Mike Triplett, who covers the Saints for ESPN, believes Evans is the division’s next superstar.

I’ll go with Evans, whom I already raved about in one of our previous roundtables. It’s crazy to think he’s still just 21, since the red zone monster looked like a man among boys last season. Coach Sean Payton and Saints players talked about how impressed they were by Evans’ catch radius and ability to win balls at the highest point.

Remember, Evans put up a monster rookie season — yes, Godzilla-like — with an absolute trash for a quarterback in turnover-prone Josh McClown. Imagine what he can do with a real quarterback.

Enter “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston. He only needs to be average, and Evans could destroy defenses like Godzilla did Tokyo.

Evans is going to be the best receiver in the entire NFC soon!

  2. Buc-A-New Says:

    ^^^^ This!!!!!

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

I am glad that Evans spent time with Randy Moss this off-season. He will need to know how to deal with double teams and being the 31 focal for other teams defenses to stop/contain.

counting that and some of the garbage time stats the WR racked up last year being down in almost every game and playing against prevent/soft defenses. It will be interesting to see what the WR will do in a competitive game/games this year!!!

I see Evan number being down or close to the same, hopefully we will see others step up because of the attention that Evans will receive!!

  4. McAlpinMike Says:

The only thing I don’t like about the original Godzilla is that he seems to have alligator arms when he goes across the middle……of Tokyo.

  5. BuccaneEric75 Says:

In the Red Zone Winston just has to throw it up to the back corner then watch the Ref put his arms up!!

  6. Tom Edrington Says:

The only concern I see is that the more hype Evans gets, the more attention he gets in the defensive game plan and good defensive teams can take away one of your receivers.

  7. Buc-A-New Says:

Tom, that is good news for VJax then.
Damm you guys! I am rained out from work, my wife is at work and my son is at Summer Camp and nobody is hanging out here.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Winston to Evans for the next 10 years. Actually Evans is exactly what Jameis looks for in a WR.

    It’s going to be naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasty!

  9. Ray Rice Says:

THE MESSIAH deep to SAVAGE MIKE!

  10. Burl Says:

As Dick Vitale would say, “Yeah Baby”!!!

  11. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Book it,the WINSton/Evans dou will be the best in the league in three years. Scary the thought of this combination. Two alpha males dawg. Oh My God…

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Nos-Bos

Maybe! But who will be the head coach by then???

  13. rayjay1122 Says:

    @Realist

You kill me with your consistent “garbage time” term for the yardage that Evans and Jackson. That was only the case in a couple of games, you do realize that right? I mean you did watch the games last season right? Most of the games we were in at the end and actually lost 4th quarter leads. Get with the program dude. As Jim Rome would say, “have a take and don’t suck”.

  14. Dewey Selmon Says:

I believe Evans numbers will go down this year. Why? Because last year the RB’s and TE’s did nothing in the passing game enabling #13 and #83 to barely reach the 1000 yr plateau. Remember the last game vs N.O.? first 2 plays of the game were to #13 and#83 to reach that mark. I think with the fact of #13 being double teamed and Winston spreading the ball around, #13’s numbers will go down and #83 could have a monster year. I’ll predict #13 1100 yrs and 10 tds’. yeah I know the yardage is a little higher, but his td’s go down. #83 will have 1300 yr’s and 11 td.s due to #13 being double teamed. That is 21 td’s for Jameis along with 7-8 td’s to TE/RB’s

  15. Sunny Says:

    So did Micheal Clayton

  16. Sunny Says:

Hopefully dirk will use evans, jax and ASj As he did jones, white, and Gonzalez

  17. BuccaneEric75 Says:

ASJ is going to be key. A big target for checkdowns. If he can play at least 12 games, Winston will have a better chance to succeed.

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

Keep stirring the pot, I can smell success cooking.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Dewey Selmon

You logic in describing ME having less yardage this year is certainly on point. Can’t argue with that. ASJ is probably going to blossom this year much as ME did last..IF he can stay healthy and so there are balls that ME won’t get. And if the Bucs get some production out of the backfield receiving more of Evans tosses.

Having said that though our time of possession was soooo horrid that Evans might keep the same number of passes directed at him simply because we will throw that many more passes…enough to go around.

  20. Danati74 Says:

I believe we got another good 1st round pick. Not many, but we hit on M. Evans. Whether his numbers are down or up,…he will produce. He will be the #1 or #2 target. He will block for his team, go up and catch the ball, and give it all he gots. You can’t ask more from a player. Especially on our team. No matter if we were playing catch up or just airing it out, it will be much better with Winston throwing to him. Get ready for some good games and Buc ball this season. Drafting him #7 last year was a good move. Thats it.

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

On paper we have everything except the OL. Two good/great Recievers, one RB that had a great rookie year that is healthy now and a 2nd year RB that is supposed to be a good pass catcher, a TE that could be top 10 at his position, and a QB that could be the best since Luck. We also have a defense that has a full year to learn the Tampa 2 and free agents from Dallas that ran pretty much the same system. If we can get Top 15 OL play we could have a nice season!!

  22. Rjbucnut Says:

Thank god the Bucs drafted Evans instead of that clown Joe was clamoring for!!!

  23. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Realist!! would you be interested in some sort of wager?

The 2014 NFL Draft is looking like a huge hit with ME at 7 overall especially when considering the 6 chosen before him. While a couple are legit, most of those first 6 picks aren’t looking so hot. 2nd rd pick 2014 – ASJ, we are all hopinh makes the leap this year and there is big optimism. I believe thats where the 2014 NFL Drafted ended for us. The love affair with Sims by L & L is not looking justified. It’s too early to write him off but I don’t see him providing anything Rainey doesn’t have already. The 2014 5th round selections look like nothing more than depth and in rounds 5 to 7, it’s understandable. Although early, I’m giving L & L a B+ there. The 2015 NFL Draft for us is what has me excited. JW was a no-brainer and hopefully can be a franchise saving 1st ever Franchise Qb for us. Put that into perspective. We’ve been around for over 40 years and never had a franchise Qb or at least one that was a franchise qb for us. Smith and Marpet in the 2nd round could make our O Line legitimate. We all have to hope. Bell and Clay could be boosts to our 3rd and 4th WR options and the returning game.

    I’m wit you cmurda…

  26. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Yeah me too Cmurda. Good points.

  27. tampa2bucsforever Says:

When I talk Mike Evans it is in the same breath as Megatron and Dez Bryant. 12 TD in his rookie year. There were only three other WR to score more TD than Evans. That is with McClown over throwin him all day. That is with an OC calln the same slant pattern all day. Can you imagine when Jameis lays it out there right in the bread basket? In the red zone defenses will be going “you got Jackson, yea, you got ASJ, yea, you got thunder, uh yea, you got Wright, yea, you got 13, oh, who got 13?
