Bucs No. 28

July 19th, 2015
Time to break an ugly streak.

Time to break an ugly streak.

You’ve heard college football programs identified for producing top talent at a certain position.

Penn State is “Linebacker U.” USC is known for pumping out offensive linemen. Miami cranks out wide receivers.

And on it goes.

Well, Elliot Harrison tried to do that with NFL teams at only one position for. Writing for NFL.com. He figures out which NFL teams are the best at producing quarterbacks.

This won’t shock any Bucs fans, but the Pewter Pirates are among the bottom dwellers at developing quarterbacks. In fact, Harrison has the Bucs at No. 28.

28) Buccaneers: Doug Williams, Brad Johnson, Josh Freeman

Williams was the first “franchise quarterback” the Bucs ever had — and, Jameis Winston aside, is the only one they can claim. Former owner Hugh Culverhouse’s decision to not pay Williams in the ’83 offseason set off an era of losing rarely seen in NFL annals. Johnson took the team (or rode the defense) to a Super Bowl. He was solid. Freeman had the potential to be just that, but after one stellar season in 2010, his stock plummeted.

It is sad that the Bucs, in existence for nearly four decades, can’t boast of developing quarterbacks. Yes, Williams was all but thrown out the door. The best quarterback the Bucs ever had was signed as a free agent, Johnson.

Joe sure hopes “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, snaps that awful streak.

The only thing about this story that surprises me is that there are 4 teams worse than the Bucs. Winston gets to change all of that.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wow…..I’m shocked the beloved Shaun King didn’t get mentioned!!!

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  3. Fsuking Says:

Winston should boost us into the top 3
all time by the start of training camp!

  4. Harry Says:

The Bucs were cheated once again. We can’t be first (32) in anything:
    32). Texans
    31). Jaguars
    30). Ravens
    29). Panthers

I don’t get why we beat out both the Ravens and Panthers when they have years of true steady franchise QB play with Flacco and Newton, respectively. Ok, one could argue the Texans and Jags might beat us out, but since the Bucs let Williams walk over $$$ and gave away HOF Steve Young, I think we are the clear winners of the inept QB award!

    But, now we have Winston!

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs would have to rank 31st on this list above only the Jags just by having won the Super Bowl. The Texans have had better QB’s comparitively in their short existence, imo.

  6. rayjay1122 Says:

Good morning Bucs fans!! That list is dismal indeed, but I have happy news! After 10 years of struggling to have a family with my Wife, we are getting the opportunity to Draft (Adopt) Twin baby boys who are due late October or early November!!! We are so excited and now I will one day get to take my sons to Bucs games the way my Father took me when I was a young boy. Those experiences along with Disney trips were some of my most endearing childhood memories.

  7. Fsuking Says:

Happy for you ray jay!!! Have you given any thought to the name Jameis?

  8. rayjay1122 Says:

LOL…Yeah! Names have been a topic so far and lets just say it is not as easy as I used to think. We have come up with several that we like. Might just have to write them all down and pull them out of a Bucs helmet. I will however add any suggestions from fellow JBF family that we like to the list.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

    Congrads Rayjay1122!!!

2 big cigars for you and the new editions, as for names I would suggest the two greatest and longest career Bucs Ever!

    Welcome Deckerhoff and Rhonde !!!!

  10. RustyRhinos Says:

Congratulations RayJay and family. Totally excited for you and your family.

  11. RustyRhinos Says:

Salute to you and yours rayjay

  13. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    Congrats rayjay!!!!!

  14. Buc1987 Says:

rayjay…congrats first. But here’s what you gotta do. Throw out the rattles and baby toys. Place a football in each one of their cribs. Decorate the walls with fatheads of Buc players (might not be too many to choose from) and Buccaneer wallpaper. Forget the pastels and all that jazz. Let them play with limited toys, but always let them play with the football. See where I’m going with this? Instead Barney and Elmo, let them watch NFLN and football games on Sunday. Start tossing them the ball at a very young age. It’s not pushing football on them if that’s all they know from birth. Having 2 of them you might have a better shot of atleast one of them becoming a future NFL player that MIGHT get drafted by our team. Wouldn’t that be a hoot?

Tiger Woods never played with toys when he was a kid. He played golf ya see. That’s all he knew. Golf. The plan worked for his dad, and it should work for you.

I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Names? Pick out the best names that sound good coming out of the tunnel at an NFL stadium. Whatever sounds good coming over the PA. That’s what I did with my first kid. I named him Mason. Then I didn’t follow through with all the stuff I mentioned above. So now I have a kid that likes art and likes to paint. I love him just the same, but it’s on me that I didn’t follow through with my plan.

So I’ve given you a plan, now execute it my man. It can be done!

Oh and Jameis will be our first one and only true franchise QB.

I know there used to another one in Tampa, but I can’t remember the name of it for the life of me. They have a website too, but they have TONS of Bucs stuff.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Rusty…Oh well it was called Buc Heaven and the store shut down in August 2012.

  17. rayjay1122 Says:

Thank you all for the kind words and 87, I will for sure follow your advice. The only sad part is trading in the 2 seat MB SL 550 on a full size SUV, but small price to pay. Won’t be able to afford to maintain the Benz anyways with growing future football players to feed! 🙂

It is worth it, in the long run. After they are drafted, they will be able to buy you a Ferrari. :^)

Believe me, I am no King fan…far from it. But wasn’t that game lost due to a bad call by the refs?

  20. Buc1987 Says:

RayJay….you might even have another Ronde and Tiki on your hands! 🙂

  21. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Rhealist… You really like adding an H to Ronde, don’t you…lol!

Congrats, RayJay! Hope to see you and your family at the games in a few years!

  22. Sick of the Wait Says:

Awesome news Rayjay. My wife and I just adopted our little boy just a month ago and has certainly been a blessing. It was rough after being told we had almost zero chance of having children naturally or with medical assistance, so adopting was our only hope. Congrats again!!!!

  23. Hawk Says:

” But wasn’t that game lost due to a bad call by the refs?”

No. ‘Urban legend’ has made it seem like the game hinged on that play.

  24. Hawk Says:

AND, it was deemed a ‘bad rule’, and not a bad call. The rules were ‘adjusted’ during the ensuing off-season.

  25. Harry Says:

RayYat, that is awesome news. Nothingmore exciting than having your kids. What a huge blessing. Congrats!!

  26. tampa2bucsforever Says:

The Buccaneers did not get credit for developing the 2nd best back-up QB last year? Mike “MG8 – Napolean Dynomite” Glennon. Vinny Testaverde and Steve Young had their start here?

  27. Hawk Says:

The list of ‘former’ Buc QBs who played in a Super Bowl includes…
    Doug Williams
    Chris Chandler
    Steve Young
    Trent Dilfer
    Who did I miss…

  28. David Says:

Congrats RayJay…I have two boys and a girl and one is already showing signs of following his old man in joining Bucsnation! Hope ur lil ones are healthy. That’s all I prayed for with mine. But um Joe..what do u mean “our best qb was singed as a free agent”? I don’t Brad Johnson was our best qb. Do you?

  29. WS99 Says:

    Congrats RayJay!!!

  30. Hawk Says:

BTW, congrats, rayjay1122, on the new additions to your home! Being a Buccaneer fan has given you the experience needed to be a parent. There are going to be many times when you beat your chest with pride, and then there will be those times you beat it in rage. You may start losing your hair, but at least you will gain a heart condition. :^)

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Congrats rayjay…you hijacked Joe’s article. lol

  32. Trubucfan22 Says:

    How are we not last?

  33. ATLBucsFan Says:

Congratulations rayjay. Wife and I tried for 10 years, adopted 3 children and never looked back. You’ll be happy you made the decision. Go Bucs.
