Gerald McCoy absorbed a tongue lashing yesterday

A former Buccaneer went on a passionate tirade yesterday declaring that Gerald McCoy’s brand of leadership is a waste of time because he’s been the face of disgraceful Tampa Bay losing.

Man, ex-Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) was steaming on the WDAE-AM 620 airwaves yesterday.

Beckles was appalled by Jameis Winston’s Tuesday revelation — that McCoy is a regular voice in his year guiding him.

In Beckles’ mind, the teams McCoy has captained qualify him to be a follow Jameis, not lead him.

“You know what happens, if I send somebody to go fight with the leader and they come back butchered and everybody’s dead. You know what happens if you send somebody and you come back with a  2-14 team in real war, everybody’s dead,” Beckles shouted. “You’re going to keep on sending with the same leader? So Gerald McCoy can’t help Jameis Winston. He can’t. Ok. Jameis Winston needs to listen to his coaches, keep his mouth shut and stay out of trouble.”

There was much more, but the point was clear: the Bucs need new leadership, and not the kind that’s been present for the historically dreadful past two seasons.

Does Joe agree? Yes, but not to Beckles’ extreme. Joe can’t ignore reality. The Bucs’ on-field leadership failed the team miserably in recent years. Something has to change.

I can’t remember any Superbowl Teams that Beckles was on

  2. celly Says:

I have no problem with Jameis listening to McCoy.

He is still a rookie after all. Its not like he knows the NFL yet.

With that being said, I fully expect that once his rookie season is over, he WILL be the vocal leader that this team has been missing and will be instrumental in firing up the defense as well as the offense.

  3. Rrsrq Says:

As soon as the Bucs win their third game, leadership belongs to Winston, present leadership only got us two wins, Go Bucs

  4. Josh P Says:

I guess we should stop listening to the Ron and Ian show for any football insight…I mean since Ian went 3-13 and his best record was 7-9 there’s really nothing he can offer. One of the dumbest comment i think i’ve ever heard a radio host make…

  5. Josh P Says:

    Rrsrq

The leadership Jameis is getting from GMC has nothing to do with wins or loses.. Has to do with how to be a professional and how to carry himself in the NFL.

Ian is acting as if Rob Johnson is trying to give Jameis QB techniques.

  6. mike Says:

    I agree with Ian here

  7. drdneast Says:

    I agree BucNeckid.
It hasn’t been the core players like McCoy and David that has let this team down, it has been the last 3 regimes and GMs who have brought in stiff like Bowers,Kyle Moore and Mason Foster type players.
I guess Beckles would prefer Winston to keep doing stupid immature stuff rather than getting advice from a grown up adult who has never been in trouble in his life.
Beckley is entertaining to listen to, but that’s about it.
We used to call him Ian Buckles when he played in the Big Sombrero.

  8. Buc Neckid Says:

Didn’t everybody that wanted to draft Jameis scream that he would need to be taken under a Pro’s Wing to acclimate him to the NFL?
    and
If not GMC, Who on the BUCS Roster should mentor him?

GMC was a winner in college as well.
No National Championships, but i recall OU was a lot better than any Beckles’ Indiana teams ever were.

    @joe,

Maybe you’ve already written about this, but has there been any talk on an indoor facilty to give these men a day or 2 off from the blistering heat or just prepare for an indoor match up? I’m from the north so the summer heat in FLA seems a bit excessive, no? I’ve listened to these guys (Bucs players) say, the heat is tough to get used to. Btw – not making excuses, just looking out for our crew!

  10. bucfanforlife Says:

Is the fault of the Bucs miserable performance fall only on GMC’s shoulders? Was it his fault there was no offense? Did he have much help on the defensive line? GMC is a solid player, a good man on and off the field, and a true pro! Winston could not choose a better mentor.

  11. bucs4lyfe Says:

kinda makes sense….you may not want to agree but everyone on this site has questioned mccoys leadership at one time or another, its time for a change but only a winner with more talent can take his place. lavonte isn’t vocal enough

  12. Bill Byrne Says:

Josh P Says: You are dead on!!! Thanks.

  13. mac Says:

McCoy is a very good defensive tackle… He is a solid teammate and seems like a nice guy…

That being said, he is not the kind of guy that is going to take on a leadership role… He is more quiet and reserved, likes to help up opposing players and make sure they are ok and brush them off with care and concern for his fellow man…

Not who I want as my leader… I would rather have an asshole who has the balls to be nasty and get in peoples faces when they are pussing out… Like Warren Sapp was…

Gerold is a nice guy and a solid player… But he is not a leader…

  14. Bobby Says:

Ian Beckles….is there any worse talking head on the radio?? How does this hack still have a program. SMH McCoy is a perennial pro bowler and well respected around the league. He and Lavonte can’t single handed stop an opposing offense. You could put Warren Sapp in his prime on last years D-line and you’d get the same results. No edge rusher (No Simeon Rice) and very little supporting cast. GMC has earned the right to take Jameis under his wing. Much rather have him doing the talking than some party boy. Gerald will help keep him focused and working hard.

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

Is this the guy who on Friday’s is in a guessing contest with his cohost to guess the ages of different “famous” people. What does that have to do with sports? Blah blah blah he is always hungry.

  16. BFFL Says:

This isn’t college. Leadership is overrated at the NFL level..You either have players that can execute mentally and physically and coaches that can teach and scheme or you don’t. It’s as simple as that.

  17. Bucfever40 Says:

I don’t know anyone who has been so desperate to be relevant as Ian Beckles, I mean what a blowhard tool this guy is, and he’s why I shut my sports radio off at 12 noon! Who the F are you to make such an asinine statement Ian? To me, you’re just a round paluka, who probably burned through your 5th round salary after being forced to retire. How long is this man going to stay jealous of GMC? He’s had to eat crow (not by choice) several times as Gerald was his whipping boy for the first 2 years. Always claiming to have a house full of friends watching the game and would single out GMC on every play he wasn’t a factor on, then he’d would go on the air and always use the disclaimer of “I’ve played in the NFL, gone up against the best, so I know what I’m talking about” and proceed to tear down GMC on open airwaves everyday. Stop it already Ian, we get it, GMC is someone you NEVER played like (not even close), why you have a hard on for him just shows your jealousy. The Bucs NEED players like GMC to take a leadership role on this team, back in the 90’s, Ian played with stars like Nickerson and Lynch, I’m sure each one of them took a leadership role to Sapp, Brooks and Alstott as rookies, should the same apply to those HOUSEHOLD names as GMC? Get a clue you moron!!

  18. b Says:

Jameis is going to be jameis no matter who is in his ear. People need to understand that what he does comes naturally and he only knows one way and its been successful for him. Just let him do his thing and when he wins a game in the 4th quarter then they can hop on board and follow him.

  19. ElioT Says:

Beckles has always been a McCoy hater. He’s jealous.

That’s how bad this Tampa sports radio market is, that this guy actually has a job on air.

I have no problem with Jamies listening to our team’s best player who is arguably the best at his position in the entire NFL. The systematic losing isn’t McCoy’s fault. It’s Bruce Allen and Mark Dominick’s fault for a decade long streak of pathetic drafts.

    Go Sucs!

  20. Clodhopper Says:

GMC has a lot of fantastic qualities. Leadership is not one of them.

  21. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Ian beckels I’m sorry I blink my eyes and missed your entire career.

  22. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

Wow, this is fun. Two more months of picking out people to blame for last year. How fruitless. Thanks but I’ve had enough of last year. Much has been addressed. Time to move on to what is better, what has changed, what is upgraded. There’s truly a lot. The time to review was at the end of last season, not at the beginning of this one.

  23. ElioT Says:

You could have had Gen. George S Patton out there for the last decade and it wouldn’t have made a damn bit of difference.

A few “leaders” aren’t going to make up for the 40+ other players on an garbage roster.

What’s McCoy supposed to do with that bullsh*t offense without a coordinator last year?

    Go Sucs!

  24. cmurda Says:

If this were Joe Montana talking, I’m all ears. I could give 2 craps less about Beckles crying mouth. Dude is constantly whining. You have McCoy who has put his money where his mouth is for a few years now. Still very productive although facing constant double teams. Winston is doing everything right and saying all the right things, yet Beckles manages to find pellets of poop in a gold mine.

  25. Eric Says:

    Jameis is being Jameis.

He won over the Noles by out working everyone and then lighting it up when he got his turn.

    Not talking.

I see no difference at all.

  26. MGL Says:

If they come back butchered… they’re zombies!

  27. Orlando Kevin Says:

It takes a team of players and coaches working together to win. One player isn’t going to do it.

Ian Beckles comment is ridiculous as it has very little correlation.

  28. Tampa Tony Says:

Gmc and the current rosters leaders have lead this team to losses a lot of them. Gmc back down and let the alpha take over.

    ———————————–

I disagree. Before Simeon Rice, Sapp always had a edge rusher that would get double digit sacks. Names like marcus Jones and Chidi Ahanatou. When those guys left the bucs, they did not come close to that success. I believe Sapp could make any lineman around him better. He was an absolute terror down in down out. He is a first ballot HOF for a reason. McCoy is not on that level and it is not even close. I believe McCoy can take some of the blame for not having a double digit sack edge rusher as well.

  33. salish_seamonster Says:

Preposterous. The whole thing. Beckles is a windbag. Guys like to talk tough and put down McCoy, associating him with the culture of losing. You can’t pin it all on him. Despite the record last year, there are some good veterans who know how to play and prepare. Their opinions should not be dismissed because Joe and others think Jameis is the savior. This is just reactionary silliness appealing to the lowest common denominator PBR swilling morons… Just another blast from JBF’s a$$.

  34. TrueBuccaneersFan Says:

McCoy has ended 3 out of 5 years on injured reserve. McCoy has missed 25% of the games since being a Buccaneer. In 2010 we went 3-1 without McCoy at the end of the season with the one loss being an overtime loss against Detroit. Last year everyone said that our defense improved after the bye week. McCoy was out for three games after the bye week. McCoy led the team in penalties in 2013 and led the defense in penalties in 2014. He has lost as many yards on penalties as he has on sacks in his career. Most of his sacks come in the 1st quarter. Only 1.5 sacks came in the second HALF of games last year. Out of 22 games against division opponents McCoy has only registered 6.5 sacks in 5 years. The vast majority of his sacks have come against non-division opponents (and usually crappy offensive lineman. see Browns center Nick McDonald last year). His tackling and assists numbers are nothing to brag about either. He has never scored a safety, he has never intercepted a pass, and he has never scored a TD. Our defense has averaged 24th in the league since he has been a Buccaneer. In his reign we have had the team totally collapse in 2011 with the players revolting against the coaches, we had the quarterback totally disrespect the team, the coaches, and fans in 2013, and last year we were, by far, the worst team in the league in every aspect of the game. That is why we got the number one pick. And McCoy led us there.

McCoy is the product of good marketing.

  35. Paully Says:

Beckles was a bum when he played and is a bum when he talks about playing.

  36. Jimbo Says:

If I had to list the top 15 reasons for why the Bucs have been so bad over the past 5 years, McCoy would not be one of them.

Selmon and Giles were leaders of bad teams too, so I guess they are bums as well

  37. Buc1987 Says:

    I agree with Beckles.

  38. David Says:

    Totally disagree.
Manning was on a losing team at first.
So was Aikman. And admit Smith.
    So was Sapp and Brooks.
    And hundreds of others.

You get rid of the dead weight and build around the pro bowlers like McCoy and David.

Buckles can be an idiot at times.

  39. StPeteBucsFan Says:

There is room, in fact dare I say a need for more than one leader in an NFL locker room. There is room, or gain should I say a need, to have all kinds of leaders.

The rah rah guys are great. But so are the fierce warriors like DB55. He didn’t have to yell all he needed was that stare and then ole arched eyebrow. DB55 was as intimidating dude as I’ve seen and yet he didn’t need to run his mouth.

This is not to put down Fameis. As I said it take ALL kinds.

I basically agree with Celly. It will take this year for the team to truly transition to Fameis 3’s team. But by next year he’ll not only be the face of the franchise but also it’s soul.

  40. Kevin Says:

Buckles talks to damn much…..thats why he’s on the radio he taaaaaalllllkkkkksssss. People are firkin idiots!!!!!!!!

He’s gonna complain that winston has someone to look up to????? What a loser…

Yeah Ian…..it’s all McCoys fault they were 2 and 14…..SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The guy is a great teammate. Great teams has multple leaders and he is one of them. Our old SB team had LOTS of leaders.

Go get your testosterone therapy Beckles…..I sense your getting a little cranky

  42. Pelbuc Says:

Quit killing the messenger. McCoy is a decent player whose never played big in a big game and injury prone. I agree with Ian that this team has had no fire for a long time. Bunch of zombies going through the motions. Would be nice to see a leader on the field with some attitude and a nasty streak. This team doesn’t exactly intimidate anyone. Let’s hope Winston brings some passion and swag. Winston doesn’t need to take any advice from veterans who specialize in losing. The mistakes he’ll make will be for trying not for lack of trying.

  43. Pelbuc Says:

Selmon and Giles were big time players in big game and consistent. McCoy can’t compare to those true warriors.

  44. Trubucfan22 Says:

By week 2 winston will be the on field and locker room leader. It wont take long for his personality to take over this team of losers.

  45. Yeogib Says:
