Winston Stiffarms BSPN
May 4th, 2015Regular readers know how much Joe detests BSPN, the TV outfit. It’s not sports, it’s schlock.
Good people work there. This is not a shot at those folks, like Ed Werder, John Clayton, Dickie V, Mike Wilbon and others. This is about the mentality of the suits at the four-letter.
Joe was becoming an adult (?) about the time ESPN was launched. And it was must-see TV. Daily. You were informed of the sports news of the day and occasionally amused. And, of course, there were the games. It was fantastic TV.
That changed when Disney bought the outfit, and it’s been a steady trainwreck since, earning its moniker, BSPN.
Joe can assure you the last time he watched SchlockCenter was July 2004. Joe got tired of being treated like an ADD-afflicted adolescent.
Oh, sometimes BSPN gets things right. Its coverage of college football is the gold standard. It does a good job of college basketball coverage and its NFL coverage is, well, OK. The “30-for-30” series is special.
That’s what infuriates Joe. Why can’t that outfit be outstanding regularly? It’s not like it doesn’t have the resources.
So Joe won’t schlock when there is so much better programming at other outlets, like NFL Network and MLB Network?
Joe found it amusing that America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, gave BSPN the old forearm shiver when they showed up at his draft party last week. Joe will let good guy Richard Deitsch of SI.com explain.
Two NFL media sources told SI.com that Winston’s camp, which was upset at the network’s overall coverage of the top pick prior to the draft, declined to grant ESPN the first post-draft interview. Instead, Winston spoke with the NFL Network’s Steve Wyche around the time Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota was being selected at No. 2 by the Tennessee Titans. The Winston interview aired on the NFL Network after the fifth overall selection.
Rinaldi eventually interviewed Winston but that interview never ran during the draft telecast. Instead, it ran on SportsCenter after the opening round of the draft concluded last Thursday. Why that decision? Because by the time ESPN got the interview, it was six or so picks into the draft and ESPN executives, sources said, decided it made no sense to show an interview then with the top pick.
Bravo, Jameis! You let the good guys have the first crack, the NFL Network. Bravo!
Joe knows a lot of you won’t think much of this story, but it struck a chord with Joe. And Joe loves it!
May 4th, 2015 at 9:11 am
I love it…..espn helped drive the alleged rape story and made huge issues of immature behavior, these draft picks have nothing better to do after the combine but watch draft coverage. everyone took a shot at Winston but someone had to get an interview and Steve Wyche is a good guy
May 4th, 2015 at 9:16 am
After all. It was espn’s burning desire to destroy the image of the newest polarizing athlete. He knows that NFL network wouldn’t have harped on all that nonsense the way ESPN does and did
May 4th, 2015 at 9:19 am
I guess Jameis is the Rachel Nichols/ Michelle beadle of quarterbacks.
May 4th, 2015 at 9:24 am
I miss your bspn rants joe.
May 4th, 2015 at 9:28 am
Those Fu*kers never give the Tampa Bay AREA any love so they can be “crabby” somewhere else!
May 4th, 2015 at 9:29 am
I bet Matt Baker saw his career flashing before his eyes when the pick was announced.
His role as leaker and unofficial mouthpiece of Kinsman has bit him in the tail. I hope Jameis refuses to speak or grant him any access ever.
May 4th, 2015 at 9:34 am
I haven’t watched ESPN in years either… unless its an actual game broadcast.
Its unnecessary to watch. You can get your news elsewhere and its not canned like TMZ. All the leagues now have their own networks.
If you’re a football fan and watching anything other than NFL Network, you need to turn in your man card. Or quit watching football altogether. I truly feel sorry for anyone who relies on ESPN/Mort/Schefter for their NFL news.
May 4th, 2015 at 9:42 am
I do like how Joe calls a company an “outfit”.
I have a tough time watching anything on espn thats not a live event or 30 for 30. I follow there good reporters on twitter, but i cant sit through SC or any show… its mostly garbage.
May 4th, 2015 at 9:43 am
i am glad Jameis and his reps are holding BSPN accountable. It’s across the board not just sports more important to be first than right now. Don’t cave Jameis make them take a back seat.
May 4th, 2015 at 9:44 am
Bravo Jameis. They have done nothing but exxagerate and lie about all things concerning you. They crucified you for ratings. You owe them nothing.
‘ bout time BSPN learns not to bite the hand that feeds them!
Good Job, Jameis. Keep the them at a distance. They aren’t your friends.
The further the better
May 4th, 2015 at 9:46 am
i hope the bucs back JW up in handicapping ESPN in covering our team when there is an option. Let those interviews run on NFL network or the FOX pregame while he digs us out of the cellar. Not like they (BSPN) try very hard outside of Pat Yasinskas anyhow. Their coverage of 80% of the teams in every league is shamefully lazy.
if he keeps his nose clean, eventually they are gooing to need to find a way to backtrack on their “jameis = satan + hitler + Dennis the Menace” narrative and eat crow. if he doesn’t, well, everybody’s going to jump in and have a go at him so it doesn’t much matter.
May 4th, 2015 at 9:46 am
Man! Really starting to respect this kids decision making! Lol
May 4th, 2015 at 9:58 am
Careful Jameis…just like here @ JBF…..the press in mightier that players/posters…ESPN is gonna rag his azz…forever
May 4th, 2015 at 10:06 am
I actually told someone that I wouldn’t have given an interview to ESPN – at all – to ESPN based on how the treated the crab leg information for the show Draft Academy. It was promised to Winston’s camp that they would have final say on what was going to be allowed to be shown, and they nixed the Harbaugh bit that discussed the crag leg incident.
ESPN didn’t have to agree to those arrangements, but they did. And then they broke their agreement. Shame on them.
ESPN just cares about the next media cycle, and slamming Winston helps them draw viewers in that respect.
If I were Winston, I keep on giving the stiff arm.
May 4th, 2015 at 10:12 am
ESPN = the ringleader of the Winston Witch hunt.
Not surprised he has no love for ESPN, not one bit.
May 4th, 2015 at 10:24 am
kaput-
It’s not just the crab leg dust up. It’s the way they treated the autograph thing…breathlessly airing story after story after story about how Jameis should be suspended etc….but then, when it was shown the story was false? Crickets
They’ve been on this kid for so long. Every time there’s an arrest in college football they would put Jameis’ picture next to the story. Great for click generating, horrible for those who care about integrity.
I’m seriously surprised they didn’t run the headline “Jameis Winston Refuses To Be Designated Driver For Teammate” when PJ Williams got popped for DUI
May 4th, 2015 at 10:28 am
Fungi it will be hard raggin a guy that leads a team to win after win after win homes. Wins piling up makes haters look stupid when they look for minuscule things to hate on.
May 4th, 2015 at 10:39 am
I heard Jameis was upset with ESPN for the interview with Harbaugh. Apparently he was told that it was suppose to be private and off the books.
May 4th, 2015 at 10:54 am
@Creamsicle
Don’t forget the ridiculous point-shaving story that they put on the front page. It was funny how they started back-peddling when it was obvious who the pick was.
Eff them and Matt Baker.
May 4th, 2015 at 11:00 am
Yeah bspn just pisses me off anymore. Especially their coverage of mlb. Disgraceful.
May 4th, 2015 at 11:47 am
Im so happy to see the unanimous hatred spewed at the four letter. Bunch of lackluster losers on the dumb channel.
If you guys want to hate another channel because of they way they cover Winston, look no farther than PMSNBC. This morning on “Morning Joe” they shouted Shame on the NFL and Shame on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because they believed every word of “The hunting Ground.” I don’t think they even looked into the topic any farther than that stupid mockumentary. But then again, When has NBC ever let facts ruin a good story?!
May 4th, 2015 at 11:47 am
L&WD
Remember how ESPN made a public records request to TPD & FSU requesting all documents for the past 10 years……and found NOTHING
Of course they didn’t write a story about how there were no improprieties or cover ups found…just ignored. Ignored so they can continue to say there’s a culture of cover up at FSU. It’s sick
May 4th, 2015 at 11:58 am
That was the last straw for Joe. It is embarrassing how awful they cover baseball.
May 4th, 2015 at 12:08 pm
This shows, what many already know, Winston has a weak mind
Trying to come up with a word that describes the people who makes constant excuses for #InFamousJameis
Just think we had Mariota, all these Idiots had to do is draft him.

barry
time for your meds and a nap, young man. may visions of Winston tossing td’s to Evans fill your head…
May 4th, 2015 at 12:37 pm
So Barry now that it’s over and the Bucs have Winston, how about you become “not a Bucs fan” and go away? We’d all appreciate it…

MSNBC/CNN = George Orwell’s 1984
May 4th, 2015 at 12:37 pm
The one good thing about ESPN draft coverage is they had the man who walks on water and the best coach ever Jon Gruden. I though I would be dead and buried before the Bucs ever won a Super Bowl. Now with the drafting of Winston I’m hopeful I’ll get to see the Bucs win another one.

You mean like how you continue pouting about Winston? For me, almost as good as Winston being a Buccaneer, is that fact that Winston is controlling your dialogue.
Your incessant troll pouting doesn’t affect Jameis whatsoever. He will never know you exist. But, it does show everyone here on JBF how much Jameis OWNS you. He’s so deep in your head, he counts your sheep.
May 4th, 2015 at 1:03 pm
When the pick came through al they showed was a “highlight” of a couple of picks and Chucky going into a tirade about bad decision making “on and off the field”.
This from a man who signed Michael Pittman and Jeremy Stevens.
the agenda is painfully obvious.
I was one of the biggest Chucky supporters in this town, but no more. That was a disgrace.
May 4th, 2015 at 1:12 pm
I would like to ask BSPN a question though. After they made the public records request for any and all police reports of all male FSU student athletes in all sports, over a number of years, how come you did not state you found absolutely nothing?
May 4th, 2015 at 1:32 pm
Personally I would have stiff armed the BD too but instead they developed a relationship and winner told BD “I’ll do anything for you BD”. He’s a better man than me.

I share the sentiments of the posters: I no longer watch ESPN, nor look at their website. They have sunk to the level of TMZ.
May 4th, 2015 at 3:32 pm
Not to mention the fact that when Mariota got a speeding ticket they posted a picture of Winston on the headline instead of Mariota himself! That was just soo obvious.
May 4th, 2015 at 3:55 pm
I’m with you Joe. There was a time when ESPN was fantastic! It reported sports news in a way that was straightforward and entertaining. These days, BSPN is more interested in creating news and controversy than covering it. I’m glad Jameis snubbed ESPN. Apart from MNF, 30 for 30, and the occasional NBA game I never watch ESPN or go to their website. I prefer anyone else.
May 4th, 2015 at 4:52 pm

Their fantasy football website sucks too!!!!!
May 4th, 2015 at 5:41 pm
Really, Barry. The Buccaneers are NOT going to trade/waive Winston. Depending on his transition, he will be a Buccaneer for at least three years, and maybe up until 5 years before he is inducted into the HOF. He wasn’t who *I* wanted (neither was Mariota), but I am a Buccaneer fan FIRST. I cheer for EVERY player to play in such a way as to help the team win EVERY week of the season. When Winston goes out on the field, I will cheer for him just like I did for McCown, Glennon, Freeman, etc, all the way back to Spurrier.
Buc up or pack up.
May 4th, 2015 at 7:29 pm
Licht and Smith drafted thief own demise. At least the Chargers just got it wrong. With the Bucs, they chose to ignore a boat load of red flags. Bad organization. Bad decisions.

Mousechwitz inc. has never been known for its forward thinking..great article. I don’t watch anything unless its an fsu game on any of their channels. I didnt watch osu/bama or osu/oregon. Fsu played hardest collection of defenses and due to their constant harping, on everything jameis, fsu had to play an away game as the only undefeated team and defending champs. I dont care what revisionist rationalization anyone uses they didnt deserve 1/4 of the crowd. And gatech crushes miss st…lol!! and sorry ohio st, who lost to psu and vatech at home runs over bama and their glory boy mariota..the ticker-tape was yellow..lmao!!!!!! Thats no coincidence
May 5th, 2015 at 1:05 am
Joe is a roll tide boy from Pensacola, iirc, and extremely conservative. And no, he rarely looks beyond the surface of any topic. No surprise he did when bill maher had the losers on too..the one main, dark-haired lady made some sort of ridiculously inappropriate joke, u gotta see it to get the context, that made me think she didnt take this half as seriously as Winston’s supporters do..pretty appalling
