Report: Solomon Patton Gets Punted Today
May 11th, 2015A Buccaneers roster move expected today tells Joe one thing about rookie minicamp:
Aaron Wilson of NationalFootballPost.com is Twittering that Bucs wide receiver/returner Solomon Patton will be cut. So it’s a safe bet that sixth-round pick Kaelin Clay, arguably the top college return man last year, didn’t drop a troubling number of balls during last week’s rookie camp — and he also looked the part of NFL-ready returner.
In fact, after Friday’s practice at One Buc Palace, Joe talked to a high-ranking Bucs type who said Clay was pretty sharp on his first day.
Patton was Lovie Smith’s handpicked choice of returner to open the 2015 season. Patton, an undrafted Florida Gators rookie, was cut in October and landed with the Cardinals practice squad before re-signing with Tampa Bay late last season.
Man, the NFL is a tough business. Just ask the Eric Page, the 2013 Buccaneers returner. He’s now a proud Edminton Eskimo.

Help me understand why we would cut a guy like Patton and keep a guy like Herron? Patton saw the field and made 1 or 2 plays (unless that TD was during the preseason). Either way Herron hasn’t made any plays at all, he can’t play special teams and isn’t his contract more expensive? Educate me my fellow fanatics.

One was drafted the other was not and they probably see more upside in Herron. Yes he had some catching issues but he probably is better than Patton in all other areas.

ws99 idk i liked patton. but if i were to take a guess. maybe because patton went undrafted and his primary role was a return man. but herron was the bucs choice with the 5th round pick(?) so they still believe they can develope him.

Warning Shot fired across Herron’s Bow

Correct me if I am wrong too, but dont rookie contracts also include some guaranteed money? so at this point we would most likely still be paying Herron even if we cut him?

I’m giving Herron more than a rookie season to impress me.
Some fans are just too impatient with rookies…imo.
I always use my Ronde Barber measuring stick when it comes to rookies. No one even knew who Ronde was on the field until practically his 3rd season.

I get it. To me it’s two rookies, one who saw the field and one that did not. I imagine the draft position is what makes the difference.

Btw I made that same argument last night about the 3 years while comparing barron n lynch but obviously no one bought what I was selling.

I agree with you Buc1987. Very few 5-7 round draft picks bust the starting lineup the first year and are taken more for the promise coaches see and think they can develop.
Herron was drafted for his speed but has had trouble holding onto balls. If he can start holding onto them then he has a better chance of making the club.
Lovie has been in this business to long to start playing favorites due to who drafted and picked the player despite what many of the boneheads think out here.
He gets the overall credit for the win, or the losses like he did last year. No one asked him at the end of the year whose players they were because they all were his.
