Quarterback Of The Past

May 1st, 2015

mike glennon 1001Sorry, Mike Glennon Mob. Joe’s going to rub salt in your wounds.

Last night was rough on you, and this morning is going to get worse.

The former quarterback of the future, as Lovie Smith labeled him a year ago, is now the quarterback of the past. Mike Glennon’s shine officially has faded.

Jameis Winston is here, and Joe is no longer a general in the Mob, as Joe became after the Bucs trailed 56-0 in Atlanta last September.

Perhaps some team in the quarterback-starved NFL will trade for Glennon tonight. But that would be shocking. The Bucs seemed poised to roll with Glennon as their No. 2 QB, which always has been his rightful role, even if the Mob can’t stomach it.

The Bucs are lucky to have Glennon, and he should be well suited to whatever offense the Bucs build for Jameis Winston. Both Glennon and Jameis are passers committed to the pocket.

The only big question surrounding Glennon is whether Lovie hands him the rock, so 21-year-old Jameis can ease his way into a starting role. Joe highly advises that you don’t take that bet. It’s Jameis’ world now.

The chants of “19 and 9” heard last year at this time feel like ancient history.

I’d be surprised if there was a MGM left to speak of. I think that went away as soon as the season was over.

  2. Reezy Says:

Joe why is everyone so high on Jameis, and yet the Bucs have not fixed the O-line? I am Bucs fan but simple logic tells you that if don’t have an O-line your quarterback of the future will be a bust in your past.

  3. BuccaneEric Says:

Need at least 1 OL tonight. I’m hoping for 2 though

  4. Pat Says:

    Day 2…Pick #2…

  5. theodore Says:

@Reezy – No worries, Winston our savior will hover above the ground over rushers like an angel.

  6. Fort Myers Dave Says:

A good question is IF the Bucs would trade Glennon, come on; what if a club offered a late 3rd or 4th round pick, would the brain trust at One Buc consider it, especially if they see someone one the board that they might not be able to get w/o trading for another pick? Bucs need a backup, does it have to be MG? I am guessing they keep him but it seems like certain teams like the Saints seem to like him……

  7. Posey99 Says:

I thought I remember an article where Joe became an official member of the Mike Glennon Mob?

  8. MadMax Says:

Alright Joe, be nice, you werent the General, lol (self appointed maybe). Its all good though. The few of us who were clamoring for him to start instead of Freefree was because of Freefree. I was one of the first and went many rounds with you and 87 until finally freefree’s mental issues shined through for everyone to see.

BUT, I hope we keep him as a backup. You never know if Winston would be injured. And he’s already familiar with the players. WE STILL NEED A BACKUP!

But hey, at least you got this one right with Winston. I wasnt on board (all the way) until his combine. Plus remembering what I saw in him in his first Fl. St. game. As you and 87 and many others, Im glad we got him. And theyve already said they plan on starting him.

  9. P'cola Buc Says:

    @ Reezy
Can’t fix everything at once. Jameis Winston is a wonderful building block to start with. He has excellent receivers in Evans & Jackson. He has promise in ASJ. Also the draft isn’t over which may provide him with additional online support or perhaps an old weapon in Rashad Greene. It’s ok to look on the “sunnier side of the street”.

  10. Danati74 Says:

Haahhaaahahaa you losers. We told you guys, but you didn’t believe us…Now you don’t know what to do. Stick by your team’s side or choose a new team to support. All that smack talk for Mariota and Glennon and now all waking up with shock and a hang over. Most calling out of work today, and Wifey is going to divorce you for your poor decisions last night. Go Bucs!!!!!

  11. Buc since '74 Says:

Enjoy the clipboard MG. Hope he remains a Buc as he’s a solid back-up and should fit the new offensive scheme. Was at the stadium last night (Raymond Jameis Stadium as some were yelling) and the crowd overall seemed very excited about the pick. I was expecting some groans from the MM and Trade Down teams but didn’t hear anything. Welcome to Tampa Jameis. I, for one, am very excited about the swagger and leadership and confidence and winning he should bring to our team.

For the first time in a long time, I have confidence that our quarterback with kick your quarterbacks arse any day. I realize this is a team sport, but what a great new feeling!!

  12. Patrick in VA Says:

    Stay classy Danati74

  13. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

I think it would be foolish of the Bucs to trade him for anything less than a early 3rd round pick, he is the best QB taken in that 2013 draft class. The Bucs fan in me says keep him, but the “MGM’er” in me hopes he gets traded to a team and fanbase that understands good QB’s don’t have to be 1st round picks. I think the best thing for Glennon would be to go to an organization like the Bills where he can start, but the best thing for the Bucs is to keep him until his rookie contract expires.

  14. Bucs4lyfe Says:

If glennon can start game 3 of his rookie year then Winston can start game on with no issues

  15. rayjay1122 Says:

The draft is not finished folks. Don’t worry, we will get some OL help this evening.

  16. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Oh and Danati74 in the words of the poster who used to entertain us here (The Kevin or something like that??) you can suck it! 🙂 dude you got your guy, be happy and enjoy but why be a douche?

  17. David Says:

Defensive lineman everywhere are licking their chops waiting to get the chance to sack Winston’s slow a$$! With your line and his “rock” like speed you should get ready for close-ups of him with towel over his little head like Cam Newton. Boo Hoo I lost again, Mariota and Titans are gonna whoop his a$$ again opening day! Been a Bucs fan 20 plus years and just sick of the stupid moves. Hey Dungy sucks let’s fire him. Hey Gruden Sucks Let’s fire him! Hey Raheem Sucks let’s fire him! Hey Freeman Sucks Lets fire Him! Hey Schiano sucks let’s fire him. Hey Lovie & Licht SUCKS LET”S FIRE THEM! You know why I’m gonna watch this year Bucs Fans, because I want to watch you regret the choice you just made. This Clown is gonna bring nothing but bad media and despair! Where is the line? No integrity, No Class. Cannot and Will Not Root For this Jerk! Say what you want IDC enjoy your Franchise Loser!

  18. Greg Says:

Alright Alright Alright!!! I can be a man and admit I hoped we went another direction with the pic. I still don’t feel comfortable with the situation with the girl simply because we don’t know Winstons side. That being said we will all have to take a leap of faith and hope the NFLs new priority in domestic violence type issues forced them to do a thorough investigation along with the Bucs. There are exciting signs of what Winston can be here in Tampa and I hope we get him the protection he needs to succeed tonight.

  19. ATrain Says:

Awesome Joe so it is the Winston World…

ALSO its the same crap O line world Glennon had to try and play behind.

NO EXCUSES FOR WINSTON.. Give him the football and let him Lead…

Trash Glennon and say he is a bench QB OK!! I give you that..

BUT Winston MOB same goes for HIM> Now Win Winston PERIOD

What good for Glennon should be Good for Winston.

But I already notices a few backing down the train with the Oh he will have to work into the NFL.. NO he is PRO ready Winston Mob He is the savior … HE had to be the PICK..

Winston is the PICK and I will stand behind him…

But Plan on HEARING it if he fails Just like you DOWN Glennon.

NO EXCUSES WINSTON IS THE MAN…

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

Glennon can be a good backup.
But if we can trade him for a 3rd or better- we trade him

  21. kaput Says:

There is nothing at all with being a career back up in the NFL as a quarterback. You can have a long and financially fruitful career, and rarely take a beating.

I think Glennon is a professional and will do everything he can do – just like he always has – to be a great teammate and a guy that sticks around, learns and brings some value to the team in whatever role he’s assigned.

I would be very happy if he’s the Bucs back up quarterback for the next six or seven seasons. That would be something to be proud of, without doubt.

  22. BucBoy Says:

Greg…you say we never heard Winston’s side of the thing with the girl. You are right…he had video evidence yet he destroyed it! Why would you destroy evidence that proves your innocence?? Guilt?

“Titans win! Chip wins! Buccaneers … lose.

The Titans selected Marcus Mariota at No. 2. I love the pick. Tampa should’ve picked him instead of an untrustworthy quarterback like Jameis Winston, who has major decision-making issues on and off the field. But the Bucs went Winston, as most predicted, and Tennessee went on the clock …”

I am a Bucs fan….I will not pay to watch another game until Team Glazer fires Lovie the Loser…but will watch on TV. I am gonna love (agree with David) to watch Fat Porky Jamarcus Winston run for his life and his interception count equal Joe’s golf score!!

As for Glennon, the best gift the Buc’s could give him is to trade him! Glennon is begging Licht to trade him to any team with a HC who can coach!

  23. Patrick in VA Says:

@kaput – No doubt. I’d be a backup QB all day every day. If I can squeeze a 13 year career out as a backup QB and have minimal wear and tear on my body, that would be fantastic. No worries about having all the issues later in life like the starters. I’d call that a win for Glennon and a win for the Bucs by having a backup that we don’t have any qualms about going to in case of injury or for whatever reason

  24. ThunderBuc81 Says:

I am all for MG staying even as a back up. I’m ok with trading him too as long as its a worthy trade. I think he’s a solid back up but keep in mind trading him away we don’t have 2nd QB so that puts the team back in the FA market for a QB and this team has enough holes to fill with out adding anymore. If JW lives up to his hype and I can live with MG as the back up. I don’t think MG has received the correct coaching he needs since being in the league and has done pretty well with the hand that was dealt to him.

  25. IdahoBucsfan Says:

We never believed you anyway,.. always looked at Joe as the general of the “jonny football” mob!

  26. BucFan20 Says:

Go on Joe. Act like a little kid. Who was it that just could not understand why they did not start Mike over McClown and said they should be. If they had and he had won one or 2 games you woud be crying now. You got what you got. Congrats. But why act like a punk?

  27. Buc since '74 Says:

David – you are entitled to your opinion just like the rest of us. If you can’t support your team’s new quarterback, then find a new team. Do you know Jameis personally? Do you know more about him than the police or the Bucs or the other GM’s that would have taken him #1? Do you have information about his history that the rest of the world doesn’t?

For you haters, are you not going to give your team’s new quarterback a chance to prove himself – or have you judged and convicted him already based on some inside information? Can you not give him a chance? If you can’t and have determined that you will not support your team’s new quarterback – then go find a new team because you’re not a real Bucs fan in the first place and we sure as hell don’t need you around.

  28. MadMax Says:

@david, enjoy being bitter and negative while rooting for us to fail…..karma can be a real bitch….always remember that 😉

  29. Danati74 Says:

    @ Patrick in VA
    Thanks for the support.lol
Its okay, for the past month or so,…I had to scroll down these blogs and read blah, blah, blah…I couldn’t believe what I was reading. it sounded like 12year olds complaining about a QB like he was the Devils tool. So, If I I sound so bad,…they had it coming.

  30. Buc since '74 Says:

Today is a great day in Bucs Land! We have a franchise quarterback. If you wanted the Bucs to trade down or draft MM, that’s cool but it’s time to shake that off and support your team. Real Bucs fans support the logo, not the name on the back of the jersey. Enough of the arguing and complaining. It’s done and Jameis is our qb. Can’t stand that thought? Sorry but it’s life and you either support the Bucs logo or you aren’t a fan. Everyone has the right to be upset if your pick didn’t come in, but lick your wounds and lets move forward as true Bucs fans & mature adults.

  31. Luther Says:

I don’t really care at this moment. The Bucs drafted the QB that I wanted so the rest of the hater chatter is just elevator music. Armchair GMs who have never even read the case but think they know more than L&L when they have paid tons of money on investigating this.

  32. Eric Says:

    I hope they keep Glennon.

Kid can step in and play damn well.

Beat the steelers in their own house.

  33. Jordan Says:

The only way they trade Glennon is if the pick they receive provides the Bucs with a starter. You don’t trade the most important backup for another backup at a less important position. I suspect the best offers for Glennon involve 2016 picks.

  34. BucDaddy82 Says:

OL will be fixed starting tonight!

What a sad life. Good luck with that.

  36. CalBucsFan Says:

Hey Joe, just woke up from a west coast Buccaneer first round Winston celebration party and have to say, “What, no articles pining for who the Bucs should pick with their next pick except which hog will it be?”

Bucs have 2 of the next 33 picks with lot’s of talented players to pick from. I’m tired of all the BSPN crap about “best of the rest” and am looking for some good analysis that’s relevant to Bucs’ options. No better place to get the scoop than here, hope you’re working on it now!

    Go Bucs!!!

  37. feelthepewterpower Says:

Glennon went 10:6 INT/TD ratio in six games vs. soft teams in 2014….Glennon would have had much worse numbers with the line play, injuries to personnel, and no offensive coordinator given a full season.

  38. NewTampaChris Says:

Gotta have a serviceable back-up QB, right? If the Bucs trade Glennon, then they’d still have to find a #2.

  39. 77bassguitarist Says:

LOL..first came the death of the freemanites, now the glennon mob’s extinction. I proudly welcome the winstonites!!

  40. Senor Mofo Says:

The Mike Glennon “mob” clamored for Glennon because they thought he was better than Freeman, and later McCown. And they were right on both counts.

Mike Glennon is now the best backup QB in the league. We need insurance for Jameis, and we aren’t trading Glennon unless it’s for good value.

There are still probably five or six teams in this league who would be better with Glennon as their QB instead of their current starter.

Jameis comes with risk. Glennon is the best insurance we could have. But if we can move Glennon for the right price, we move him. That price is a second-round pick, or at least a third and a veteran QB we like. Anything less would be a disservice to this franchise.

  41. Jeagan1999 Says:

I wouldn’t be so quick to put Glennon in the rear view mirror just yet. QB injuries happen a lot and Glennon has started and won games for us! Keep him as a backup (at least for this year) and an insurance policy in case Winston get run over like a possum on the highway….with our offensive line, it’s always a possibility!

  42. Firethecannons Says:

Joe how long ahead of time did you have this written up? Haha

  43. kaput Says:

Every team needs a good back up, and Glennon would have to be considered a top five back up in the league. He works hard and seemingly does it with a great attitude.

He seems like a mature kid, too.

I see no downside of keeping him around. If you could get a second round pick for him, they go ahead a trade him away. If not, keep him around and perhaps even extended a contract next year.

I love have Glennon on the team, just not as the starter.

  44. tickrdr Says:

    19-9 in 13 games.
    29-15 in 18 games and a quarter.
Should be easy for the “Savior”

    tickrdr

  45. Morgan Says:

Glennon (and McCown) had crappy RBs, crappy OL, crappy TEs, no OC. Winston will have better people at all of the above. We’ll see how Winston does when he’s thrown to the wolves. I think he’s going to have deer in the headlight look to him – but I hope I’m wrong. I’ll be at RayJay to witness either way.

  46. rdbucfan Says:

I didn’t want Shameis but my favorite team drafted him and I will give him a chance. This will the the last post that I call him Shameis.

If Jameis does not go at least 9 and 7 in his first 16 games he is a bust. MG the 3rd round went 5 and 11 in his 1st 16 games as the starter. Jameis is the #1 overall pick.

Even if the Bucs do not address the offensive line he has no excuses because MG was not afforded an excuses.

  47. Phillip Says:

I love how Joe makes a post without any actual news in it.. No quotes from anyone or sources just something random… I clicked to see if he heard something about Glennon being actively shopped and it is literally just Joe’s opinion.. Bravo Joe lol

  48. lurker Says:

“If Jameis does not go at least 9 and 7 in his first 16 games he is a bust. MG the 3rd round went 5 and 11 in his 1st 16 games as the starter. Jameis is the #1 overall pick. ”

doesn’t work like that, silly. but thanks for playing.

  49. BuccaneEric Says:

Bucboy, the tape was deleted long before he was ever a suspect. He wasn’t accused for almost a year after that night. How long would you keep a tape of your friend doing the business?????

  50. Connor Says:

Joe = biggest smart ass on the planet

Most people around the league think Glennon is a quality young quarterback with a lot potential. But no, Joe thinks Winston is automatically our savior before he’s even played a down for us yet.

  51. BuccaneEric Says:

Lurker, who the hell said he’s a bust if he’s not 9-7??!! Aikman was 1-15 his first year!! I’m sure the Cowboys regretted that pick!! LOL!!!!!!!!

  52. Couch Fan Says:

Im just happy that we have 2 talented young QBs that both have potential to be very good. I cant remember any other time in our franchise history where we’ve had 2 legitimate starting QBs on the roster. This should be fun times for Buc fans. How about we stop poking each other and trying to stir up drama and just be happy.

I’m not crazy about Lovie at all but i feel like this is the first time in a very very long time that we actually have a chance to compete with other teams in our division.

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Sorry, Mike Glennon Mob. Joe’s going to rub salt in your wounds. Last night was rough on you, and this morning is going to get worse. – Joe

    Wow. Just wow.

This coming from the self proclaimed general of the MGM.

  54. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Depends Couch…both QB’s are basically immobile by NFL standards. Need to get some decent OL prospects or neither will be successful. It will be hard to pass on Gregory if he’s (likely) there when the Bucs pick in the 2nd round, but the Bucs have to protect the basket they just put all their eggs in. It will hurt seeing a stud DE pass by, but the OL is terrible.

Actually it is you and your ilk that caused this comment. If a 3rd round pick can win 5 of his first 16 on 2 garbage teams. Jameis has no excuses for not going at least 9-7. You nut grabbers are the ones saying he is the next thing to Andrew Luck. Not me.

If Glennon is garbage and nothing but a backup QB at 5-17. Jameis is the next Jamarcus Freeman Couch Zeir Shuler if his w/l total is not higher than the career backup.

  56. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

If we can get a 3rd trade him. if not hold onto him

  57. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I was not part of the Fameis mob but now that he’s a Buc I’m all on board with #3!

Somebody was trying to point out that Fameis will be sack bait behind our horrid OL. Duh! Well yeah!. But you could say that about any QB behind our OL of last year. They will improve the OL.

In addition Fameis moves well in the pocket He may not have great 40 speed, he may not take it to the house, but Fameis is an elusive runner, he seems to have that sixth sense about would be tacklers closing in on him.
