No New Arms Will Join Winston At Rookie Camp

May 4th, 2015

jameis 0405Usually, an undrafted quarterback or two heads to rookie minicamp with an NFL team.

They’re typically guys right out of college with recognizable names, but they’re rarely more than future Arena league stars or CFL meat.

Don’t look for anyone like that on the practice fields of One Buc Palace on Friday, when Jameis Winston will throw the rock left and right and wipe away memories of Josh McCown.

Joe has learned the Bucs will not be bring in another rookie arm.

Bucs quarterback Seth Lobato, a 2014 Dolphins practice squad player signed by Tampa Bay right after last season, is eligible by NFL rules to participate in the rookie/tryout camp. So it’ll be just him and Jameis. The presence of Lobato also means the Jameis will only be around a QB who knows how to handle himself as a professional.

Look for Jameis to get as much action as he can handle, as the Bucs fast-track him to light up the scoreboard against Marcus Mariota and the Titans on opening day.

Seriously though are they going to practice indoors or what. They really need to, this sun is a killer and why even take the chance. Last years camp was a bunch of dudes walking around in floppy hats bc of pulled hamstrings. Take them inside and get some work done.

    It’s a new day!!!

  2. Buc1987 Says:

They used to say the Bucs practicing out in the heat would give them an advantage for early season home games.

    How’s that working out lately?

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Of course Joe will be taking lots of pics for us.

    Right Joe?

  4. Tiny Tim Says:

The only reason Winston asked about an indoor facility is because FSU just put one up before the national championship season. He said he asked about it for superstitious reasons and not due to the heat. He said he is from Alabama and he is use to the humidity.

  5. LargoBuc Says:

Yes, start game planning for Tennessee asap. From the first snap of pre season I want to see everyone fired up! Last year we came out lethargic in pre season and it carried over into opening day. Be ready! Come out swinging!

  6. Dreambig Says:

I have been saying for years that the Bucs need an indoor facility. Every year they miss valuable time because of thunder storms and excessive heat. There is no way you are learning and practicing effectively in 96 degree fla humidity. The urban legend that it gives us some kind of advantage I think is just not true. If they had an indoor facility they would get more work in and be better prepared for the season.

  7. The original "Kevin" Says:

Using the heat to theyre atvantage during practice is a load of crap. Maybe one day outside one day inside but this florida heat is a killer. I work outside quite a bit every summer and let me tell ya….it doesnt make it feel any easier come time to do my yardwork on saturday. It makes me not want to do it at all. Hell we need a dome or a rerractable roof. Sure if the regular season were during the cooler monthes it would be great but they need to at least let these guys practice in some ac.

  8. Hawk Says:

‘Getting used to the heat’ would only be an advantage if the NFL gave the Bucs a 1:00pm kickoff in September. They don’t. They do not have a problem sending southern teams up north in December, but let’s not give an edge to the south. smh
An indoor facility makes sense from the standpoint of not losing any practice time.

  9. AC Says:

Well said Kevin, but, not well spelled.

  10. WS99 Says:

I’m pretty sure the saints travel to nc for camp to get out of the LA heat. It appears as though the only dumba$$ practicing in the florida sun are the bucs and the jags. Even the dolphins practice indoors so do the Cowboys. Seems like there is a connection there.

  11. Capt.Tim Says:

I said it earlier- somebody better be working on that indoor practice facility- pronto!

That” the heat is our Edge” is B.S.
It’s archaic thinking. What it really does is cause rapid dehydration.
Dehydration makes tendon and Cartiledge injuries more likely. It also can cause chronic fatigue.

None of which are conducive to winning Football.

You acclimate yourself to Tropical temperatures- by living here. It’s “blood thinning” over several years of constant exposure.
    That is the advantage.
Using Donovan Smith as an example.
We are going to bring him here, and throw him on a scorching field- in an environment that is 2 to 3 climates different.
He’s used to 20 degrees and snow on the field.
We are going to throw him on a 95 degree field Friday- with humidity he hasn’t dealt with, and we work him to exhaustion.
    At 340 pounds

Yeah, wonder how he’s gonna feel by season start
Air conditioning would let him focus on technique. Not breathing

  12. WS99 Says:

What capt Tim said. I know you’re reading this GMC. Make it happen.

  13. Dan Says:

I was actually hoping Rakeem Cato would get an invite.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

It’s not like they’ll win that first game. Mariota probably won’t even play.

  15. Trubucfan22 Says:

It does help practicing in the environment that you play in. But it doesn’t need to be everyday. They should have an alternative to the outdoors.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo works all day in the heat….in the yards….on the roofs….and Pablo has no problem with it. Only sissies need shelter from the heat and Pablo is no sissy….Pablo is a stud….and has heard Jameis is a stud. Pablo thinks if Josh Freeman (sissy) could stand the heat….so can Jameis”

  17. BuccaneEric Says:

I love Pablo, I just hope he has his papers so he can stay here for the games! No teams in Mexico yet!!

  18. Jfat Says:

Practice in the heat puts the Bucs at a disadvantage if anything. These guys are dehydrating so much during the week there’s no way they are able to get enough fluids in them for game day. The games will get them used to the heat, they will play in hot weather more than most teams.

That being said, they can’t exactly plant a seed and grow an indoor facility overnight. They’ll either need to find a temporary spot or deal with it for now.

  19. BuccaneEric Says:

I used to think it was an advantage, but I’m with you guys. Learning the plays and technique has to be hard enough on its own without sweating your a$$ off and getting dehydrated in the process. I’d rather them be able to concentrate effectively and learn than worry about the weather!

I agree that we need an indoor practice facility but there is absolutely no substantiated evidence that tendon and cartilage injuries happen more frequently due to dehydration. Cartilage injuries are the direct result of joint instability and joint trauma… dehydration has no direct effect either of those. Tendon and other soft tissue injuries are usually the direct result of a muscle or tendon not being properly warmed up or being overused and thus weakened… of course with tendons and muscles, trauma can also lead to injuries. The most common and likely injuries from dehydration are muscle cramps, nausea, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke…. but nothing to do with tendons and cartilage.

Still, that being said, there is no reason to run the team into the ground and not be able to practice at an appropriate pace because players are too worried about hydration, staying cool, or not cramping up. An indoor facility is long overdue.

  21. Hawk Says:

    @ Tampabaybucfan

One of these days, Pablo is going to get a TV and find out that the Buccaneers play ‘American’ football, and not the football from his native land. ;^)

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Come to think of it. High school kids practice out in this heat and have been for years. Including a lot further south than Tampa. Some of the best college players come from Florida high schools.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Hawk

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo likes American Football….not sissy soccer…..just running around kicking the ball around….using your head….kicking and running, kicking and running…..sixty minutes 0-0….overtime 0-0……Pablo thinks soccer scores are like the Bucs offense playing against the Bucs offense….0-0…..Pablo likes American Football better with Jameis….Pablo likes Jameis”

  24. WS99 Says:

A few HS kids have also died on the practice field rip. There was a big focus on this issue a few years ago. The days of 3 a days with limited water breaks to toughen them up are long past. There’s really no benefits to practicing outdoors. The risks far outweigh any perceived benefits.

  25. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I always thought the main advantage to the dome is not losing practice time to lightning.

I’m not saying to Schiano them, but some practice in heat and rain is fine. Just be reasonable with it.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is citizen…Pablo was born in America. Pablo saw American Football first
on October 2, 2005, when the Arizona Cardinals defeated the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 31–14 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, under the name NFL Fútbol Americano. It was the first regular season NFL game held outside of the United States. The game drew the NFL’s highest game attendance at the time with 103,467 spectators. Pablo was one of many”

  27. StPeteBucsFan Says:

And so I had to google “Seth Lobato” to see what he looks like. He’s a giant…6-6 and he looks like Mike Glennon’s little brother. It’ll be like Fameis is leading the “Revenge of the Nerds”.

And so who will carry the clipboard for Fameis next year? Glennon? Lobato? An old retread brought in to “mentor” Fameis?

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Seth Lobato…..”Dunkaneer”

  29. SteveK Says:

    Capt. Tim #FTW

We can use our salary cap space over the last ten years to pay for the facility. 😉

Let’s go, Glazer Bros. Be “super” like the Matio Bros.

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

Might as well build an air conditioned domed stadium, that or a shade cover to block out the sun. To sit in the direct sunlight for 3 or more hours makes many people sick.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Buccfan37 …I hear ya and felt it too, many times.

That stadium is blistering in September and I’m just sitting there. I can’t imagine how it must be for the players. Although nothing was hotter in Tampa, than the old Tampa Stadium.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just put some sand all over the seats…..let the bikini’s in….lotion up….no prob!!!

  33. Buc1987 Says:

TBBF…fans already don’t watch the game as it is while they are there, adding bikini’s certainly wouldn’t help the team.

It might sell more tickets though!

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ 87

    OK….scratch the bikinis…..nude is good!!!

  35. cmurda Says:

@87 you ain’t kidding about the Old Sombrero. I’ve never been hotter. God forbid if you were on the West Side of the stadium. It literally felt like someone welding your back.

With that said, my second favorite game ever attended happened there. 1997 Playoff win against Detroit. It was electric. Shut down Barry Sanders who only rushed for 65 yds on 18 carries.

But the best of all was the comeback against KC Chiefs in Arrowhead. I was there folks. It was effing amazing and I mean that with a capital F. We were down 24-3 at halftime and I was getting crapped on the whole time with my Bucs gear on and nowhere to hide. I manned up and ate it until the second half and OT when we come back incredibly. I never dealt so much crap in my life to those poor unsuspecting KC faithful. OMG it was glorious.

    Ahhh, I digress.

  37. Capt. Blighe Says:

I’m really getting worried the national media is starting to promote this new movie “The Hunting Ground” That features Jameis’s accuser and family.
I’ve heard it will be very incriminating. And you know they are really gonna crank up the public pressure on the NFL

  38. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Can’t wait for Chris Landry to get on with the big dog this week and say he “is hearing” that Jameis is such a prima donna that he demanded no other QBs in roomie mini camp so that he would get all the press and all the attention

You do realize that the movie is not “new” right? I mean it’s been out since January. So tell me again why you’re so worried?

  40. Mike10 Says:

Collins already met with Rex Ryan and has plans with Dolphins, Cowboys, and Saints…. Step Up L+L, you got more cap room than any of those teams

  41. Capt.Tim Says:

    Brandon
The following is from an article published in the” John Hopkins Medical Journal”,
    By Dr. Kevin Kitna.
“Chronic pains such as back pain, neck pain, and hip pain can be caused by dehydration because the muscle, tendons, and ligament tend to become tight. This causes lack of flexibility and joint Stiffness”.

He further goes on to discribe how “rapid/sudden movements can cause ruptures, tears, and damage to the less flexible tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue.”

Dehydration also contributes to back pain and injuries. The Cartiledge between disc provide less cushion, as the cells become dehydrated. Similar to wet and dried out sponge.

Brandon- there are dozens of Doctors who have researched the damage caused by dehydration- and have published their results. Fitness magazines alone reprint this articles by the dozens

  42. MadMax Says:

Looks like Lael Collins has no interest in us. Met with the Bills, and is showing interest in the dolphins and cowboys.

  43. bucs4lyfe Says:

i have to admit im surprised titans want to start mariota day one. the game was set up too early. i think the bucs overall talent is better than the titans, if we lost the only possible reason would be because of coaching. i loved this draft and i think that now i can say lovie has no more excuses, he has a team that should atleast go 8-8 in this division rookie quarterback or not because they do have a weak schedule
