Be Afraid Jameis, Be Very Afraid
May 12th, 2015America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, oozes confidence and positive thinking. That’s one reason his teammates gravitate to him so.
And young Jameis is quick to point out he’s not afraid to make any throw. However, his brand new offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter, has a totally different mindset.
In fact, Koetter believes Winston better be afraid when he takes the field for the Bucs.
Koetter didn’t mince words, when asked if Winston should be scared to make certain throws yesterday at One Buc Palace.
“Absolutely. He absolutely does even though he doesn’t think that,” Koetter said. “I think that. Lovie, Coach Smith, number one thing is turnover margins. That’s the number one thing with winning games, we can’t turn it over. Whether it be the Bucs or any other team. Turning it over at the quarterback position is the fastest way to lose games, so there are some throws we have to be afraid of.”
Jameis will soon learn that your run-of-the-mill scrub cornerback in the NFL is likely just as good as the best cornerback that played when Jameis beat, say, Auburn or Florida. So throws he got away with might not be there on Sundays.
Joe suspects from everything Joe has heard about young Jameis, if he hasn’t figured that out yet, he will shortly.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:03 am
He’ll be fine. Nothing to worry about here folks.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:06 am
So throws he got away with might not be there on Sundays.
MIGHT? I’ve heard dozens of pundits describing how Fameis should have actually had even more int’s if he wasn’t taking advantage of college DB’s.
This is one of my major fears for Fameis. He’s gotten by so far on raw athletic superiority and now he’s going to be faced with competitors as talented as him.
But if he’s such a quick study and such a Football Einstein then hopefully there will be no “mights” or “maybes” in your final sentence.
Joe suspects from everything Joe has heard about young Jameis, if he hasn’t figured that out yet, he will shortly.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:07 am
He’ll learn from his INT’s….hopefully he doesn’t get gun shy and begin to second guess himself and hold on too long….he’ll be learning just like every other rookie QB does….it’ll be a matter of how he come out of it….his head will be spinning
May 12th, 2015 at 10:15 am
Everybody takes their licks. That being said, I’m beyond stoked for Jameis to have an OC like Koetter as he gets acclimated.
As happy as I am for Jameis to be here, Koetter is easily 1b in that respect. This is not a bash on Lovie, but, I hope he lets Koetter function in relative autonomy.

my prediction: PAIN
May 12th, 2015 at 10:23 am
I just went through the schedule. Here are my listed chances to win each game as things stand right now.
I’m sure it will not be popular among most of you. But if you consider the truth of the Buccaneers FA signings, the fact that the QB and OL need time to mesh, and the teams we face along with their changes, you’ll see it’s pretty objective.
I looked at each team we face, how they did on offense and defense last year, and what changes they made this off season up until now.

May 12th, 2015 at 10:25 am
So, a very real chance for going 6-10 or worse.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:26 am
And you know what? I’m fine with that so long as we see progress.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:30 am
F**k progress!!!!
lovie turned this into a 2 win friggin team!
and you want progress?
PROGRESS????
REALLY??????
they better show straight up POTENTIAL TO BE GREAT!
3, 4, 5, 6 wins that are eeked out in ugly games aint progress. they could have won that many last year.
they took this team to the dumpster, I expect more that “progress”
May 12th, 2015 at 10:30 am
The saga has just begun
May 12th, 2015 at 10:31 am
not to mention that “run-of-the-mill scrub NFL cornerbacks” can read that slow windup delivery better than the majority of college DBs….
May 12th, 2015 at 10:38 am
What saga Mariota? If Marcus was here we’d all be wondering how we would win with Mike Glennon starting.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:38 am
And JBF, please stop with the STUPID “America’s quarterback” BS. He’s America’s quarterback about as much as Ryan Leaf was.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:40 am
@Captain Doom
I’m sorry to break it to you, but Lovie did not turn this into a 2 win team. Circumstances and bad players did. And he has moved on from those players.
And so far as progress…I define it not in terms of wins, but in terms of player selection of talent, development, and how the players buy into a system.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:40 am
bill cosby “america’s comedian”
May 12th, 2015 at 10:41 am
@JabooBuc
There is a chance Mike Glennon WILL be starting game one.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:42 am
Good or bad, Jameis would love to know you are spending time thinking about him.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:43 am
The wins will come next year IF the progress is there this year. If you cannot deal with that, better to move on to another team now, rather than be freaking out through this season.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:43 am
Peyton threw 28 his rookie season – for that reason alone, no one should base INT’s thrown this season as a predictor of future success.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:44 am
@ bonzai
player selection last year -F
development – F
players buying in…….we’re left with a bunch of yes men.
we’ll see how that turns out
May 12th, 2015 at 10:44 am
New user names aside, it appears SOME people must already be bored following the Miami Dolphins. It’s not hard to figure out.
Jameis is a hard habit to break, isn’t he, 9?
May 12th, 2015 at 10:44 am
So far as the picks, expect a bunch this year, unless there is focus on the running game…which would be the smart thing to do with a developing OL and QB.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:45 am
America’s quarterback will learn the hard way on a few int’s but will quickly adapt.
6 – 10 hopefully brings in a new head coach who isn’t afraid winning consistently
Go Jaboo… America’s Quarterback
May 12th, 2015 at 10:46 am
“Peyton threw 28 his rookie season”….so if Jamesi throws 33 does that mean he’ll be a better NFL QB ?
May 12th, 2015 at 10:46 am
Everyone takes there licks alright and they get run out of town because of it like McCown…….Will Winston ????
May 12th, 2015 at 10:48 am
Coach Smith absolutely took a bad team and made it worse!
But,
That was last year and I’m a Bucs fan so I am hopeful this year!!!
May 12th, 2015 at 10:49 am
I don’t have any problem calling Winston America’s QB, or for that matter calling the Bucs America’s team. We are mostly Bucs fans first and foremost, so Winston and the Bucs as America’s QB and team makes sense to me.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:50 am
Joe using any chance to post Jessica Biel pics
May 12th, 2015 at 10:51 am
@Captain Doom
Quit being stupid.
Player development last year actually wasn’t too bad. You can only look at Defense in those terms because we had no QB Coach and OC to speak of. There was no way the offense was going to develop. Our only unit to do well was WRs.
But on defense, Verner was a good signing and he adapted to T2 well enough. Banks developed well. We solidified the DTs. Michael Johnson, a Licht signing, bombed. However, that is on the player.
But even so, it’s a new year. We go with what we have now, and it takes time to develop.
And FYI, regarding player development last year, NO PLAYER FULLY DEVELOPS IN ONE YEAR. So you don’t know how they did.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:53 am
the only way Glennon sees field game 1 is an injury to America’s quarterback. If Jameis is injured the prediction will easily be 2-14 again with top 3 pick and new coach.
Those circumstances you mention bonzi are called lovie smith bad choices… your golden boy isn’t perfect regardless of your bs. Lovie Smith single handedly made a bad team worse. That is undisputed
May 12th, 2015 at 10:54 am
@Fungi – My point is; it’s useless to use interceptions thrown within a given year as a basis to judge how good or bad a QB will be the following year.
Now obviously, if you have a sample size of 3 years and every year the INT/TD ratio declines, clearly you have a bad player.
I would much rather have a QB who needs to be taught to not take as many risks, compared to q QB who doesn’t take any risks at all.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:54 am
Buccfan37 Says
I don’t have any problem calling Winston America’s QB…
I do. He hasn’t earned a thing yet, and until he does, he should get no props. Giving props without them being earned is a quick way to develop a diva bust.
Not to mention, “america” infers the most likes in our country, and I don’t know if you’ve taken not, but Jameis is hated everywhere else practically.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:58 am
@tmaxcon
We know where you stand with Lovie. You refuse to admit Lovie doesn’t negotiate contracts and run the scouting department. You have a hate on for the man.
Meanwhile, I understand the job Lovie did last year was nowhere near perfect, but he was hampered by a lot of things. Tedford. Johnson. Etc.
He is not free from all blame, but neither is he at fault for everything. Which is what you claim.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:59 am
Anyone remember Jake Plummer?
May 12th, 2015 at 11:05 am
it’s called training camp and preseason, both just as intense as regular season with guys trying to win jobs. I think joe assumes more than Winston does and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston please be easy with that, the bucs have been losing for like more than a decade, you cant be America’s quarterback in a small market team for a losing team that’s never had a franchise quarterback and considering he was the most hated quarterback to ever get drafted in the first round you really are going overboard even for Winston fans
May 12th, 2015 at 11:10 am
Bonzai
for the last time you ignorant fool… I don’t hate lovie I could careless about Lovie smith. He has done nothing to earn the free pass you give him. You are the one in total denial that Lovie has final say although he might not personally negotiate the details which is totally irrelevant to this discussion but having FINAL approval on all personnel matters means Lovie can say no if it’s a bad deal or he did not like the tape or player being recommended so please stop with your nonsense.
Now onto the chosen one your golden boy… I don’t like lovie smith for the following reasons none of which has to do with color or hate as you like to spew this are statistical facts….
1 Back to Back Playoff Seasons in 10 years of coaching is not consistent.
3-3 Playoff Record hardly impressive for a legendary head coach with 10 years experience.
Last Playoff Win 2010
Last Back to Back Double Digit Win Seasons was in 2006 once again hardly consistent.
160 83 77 0 .519 win percentage is average nothing special certainly not consistent winner.
I want what is best for my team and what gives my team the best chance to win every single sunday and Lovie Smith does not give the bucs the best chance to win each and every sunday. that is fact.
May 12th, 2015 at 11:10 am
Bonzai: Glennon may start but I think it’s unlikely. I get the arguments for starting him but also think Jameis will simply take the job. This is not too big for him whereas I think it would be for Mariota.
May 12th, 2015 at 11:16 am
“America’s quarterback” is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. and be ready for atleast 20 picks minimum this year
May 12th, 2015 at 11:18 am
@bucbonzai
I don’t always agree with your takes but your points are always well thought out and you largely avoid the stupid hyperbole and emotionalism that sometimes infects our posts. Kudos on putting some thought into your posts.
May 12th, 2015 at 11:22 am
tmax
Lovie Smith does not give the bucs the best chance to win each and every sunday. that is fact.
As the man once said you are entitled to your own set of opinions but not your own facts. That last statement is simply a “belief” you hold that is not shared by everybody else here. It’s hardly a fact.
At least when I was in debate class I must have missed the part where if Tmax says it then it must be fact.
May 12th, 2015 at 11:50 am
Wait a second..I never went to some debate class. That puts me at a disadvantage in here…
May 12th, 2015 at 12:00 pm
don’t worry 87. I went to my son’s debates……after I encouraged it.
some real maroons in there……but maybe it was the subject matter of todays youth.
it really did show you how uninformed and misled some people are in this world.
oh, and ANYONE who goes into a 5 paragraph response and continued debate on the net is a fool.
and yeah, I waste too much time on here, and my simple responses and posts in general paint me the fool. lol
May 12th, 2015 at 12:28 pm
Joe –
“Jameis will soon learn that your run-of-the-mill scrub cornerback in the NFL is likely just as good as the best cornerback that played when Jameis beat, say, Auburn or Florida.”
I understand you are an FSU fan and also think the SEC is overrated but are you somehow completely unaware of Vernon Hargreaves?
May 12th, 2015 at 12:49 pm
@Captain Doom
Please do me a favor and go to your bathroom. Take a long look at yourself in the mirror and then slap yourself silly for being so stupid!
Thank you…
May 12th, 2015 at 2:44 pm
NO!
May 12th, 2015 at 2:49 pm
So Vernon Hargreaves is all of a sudden Darrelle Revis?
May 12th, 2015 at 3:32 pm
I almost forgot that this post was about Jameis not throwing picks with all the Lovie vitriole. What gives with that tmaxcon?
Like any rookie, he’ll have to adjust. There’s no question that there will be lumps and anyone who thinks that we’re suddenly a playoff team better ready themselves. Jameis isn’t the only player learning a new system or adjusting from the college game.
May 12th, 2015 at 3:33 pm
Joe –
No, not at all. Not implying at all that Hargreaves is Revis. Those are your words put in my mouth. He has a mountain to prove in the NFL to reach that height.
It just glaringly stood out to me when you said a “run-of-the-mill scrub” NFL corner is likely just as good as the best corner when Jameis played Florida.
I don’t think anyone who has any knowledge of Hargreaves can honestly believe he projects to be anywhere near a “scrub cornerback” in the NFL.
Hey, you take offense when people bash FSU and obviously Jameis. It’s fair I can take offense with something as reasonable as this.
That’s all.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:03 pm
Don’t care about FSU. Wrong guy. Not sure what this post has to do with FSU.
May 12th, 2015 at 10:12 pm
My advice to Jameis would be “Don’t be Afraid” take a look at the list of top INT throwing QBs sometime. You’ve probably already heard that hall of famer Bret Farve is #1 on the list. Did you know Payton Manning is #13 and climbing. He will probably be in the top 10 by the end of his career, right behind Dan Marino and Johnny Unitas and dont forget Fran Tarkenton who is number 5. I think the lesson is that if you have the skill to put the ball into an impossibly small window but don’t have the guts to do it then you will never be a top QB. I think JW has the “it” factor and we will see some incredible throws the likes of which no Bucs fan has ever seen. But he is also going to throw a lot of INTs. As long as the W’s are 3 times more than the L’s then what does it matter?
May 14th, 2015 at 5:27 pm
Joe Says:
“So Vernon Hargreaves is all of a sudden Darrelle Revis?”
Ever compare the stats of our Vernon and Revis while he played here? Lateral move all the way.
