The Mike Kafka Era Is Over
April 1st, 2015Joe knows this will come, in a way, as refreshing news of a Bucs quarterback not named Jameis Winston Josh McCown.
It seems the Bucs are down to one real quarterback, and that is Mike Glennon.
Joe’s not counting second-year man Seth Lobato signed Dec. 31.
Bucs backup quarterback Mike Kafka, who was on the team’s practice squad last year and didn’t see action in the regular season, is no more, reports Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com. Kafka signed with the Minnesota Vikings.
Think the team may draft a quarterback this spring?
April 1st, 2015 at 5:43 pm
I think they could draft a QB but it’ll be a late round shot in the dark.
I mean who gets a genuine starting QB in those late rounds like the 6th? Oops.
April 1st, 2015 at 5:48 pm
Let’s be honest, that was a complete and total accident. Props to Brady, but anyone realistically thinking they can get a successful franchise quarterback in the sixth round wouldn’t draft the guy in the sixth round.
If one of the smartest football minds in NFL history didn’t draft Brady until the sixth round (remember: Bill Walsh was running the 49ers drafts at the time and he didn’t think that much of him), and that it took Drew Bledsoe to get hurt before the Patriots figured out what they had, says an awful lot about what a bolt of lightning Brady was/is.

Who?
April 1st, 2015 at 6:09 pm
Think the team may draft a quarterback this spring?
No. They’re gonna roll with Glennon.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:12 pm
2 QBs on the roster. Seth Lobato is the other.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:13 pm
NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now what are we gonna do? I was sure this was the year of Kafka….
Now what do I do with my #3 jersey?
April 1st, 2015 at 6:30 pm
We’re gonna miss you Mike. I’ll always remember the Kafka years fondly.
Good luck to you buddy.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:31 pm
Only quarterback currently on the roster and he’ll still end up on the bench where his career began….. I know he wants to be traded or cut so bad after watching the bucs slobber all over Winston
April 1st, 2015 at 6:34 pm
I guess you don’t consider Lobato a real quarterback…even though he’s signed through 2016.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:40 pm
Kafka was released months ago. Not news.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:44 pm
@Joe
Agree completely about Brady being a generational stroke of luck.
And I don’t honestly expect us to find even a starting QB or a backup for that matter.
Just pointing out that stranger things have happened.
After the 3rd round I don’t see us getting that lucky. We probably will be using 2,3 and maybe 4 on an OL or edge rusher.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:45 pm
OK fine.
It looks like it’s Winston unless Lovie
hijacks the draft room to Leonard Williams St.
What’s happening to me?
Even I want to draft Winston now.
I have to admit it.
I’d be disappointed if we drafted Williams.
That’s creepy that I feel that way.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:46 pm
he wasn’t released months ago….he was only on a one year…like cousins…no need to release someone who you have no contract with…
April 1st, 2015 at 6:48 pm
OK… His practice squad contract expired and was not renewed… So he hasn’t been on the roster for like 3 months.
April 1st, 2015 at 6:54 pm
Salish,
How does it feel to sound like a know it all jerk?
April 1st, 2015 at 6:54 pm
Cleveland will give the Bucs Johnny Football for a sixth-round pick….
April 1st, 2015 at 7:05 pm
Dear Dave Pear-
Sorry if you don’t like the way I sound.
Love,
The know-it-all-jerk
April 1st, 2015 at 7:11 pm
Well duh. His participation in the veteran combine (dumb idea) pretty much made it clear.
April 1st, 2015 at 7:20 pm
Wow! Joe
“Let’s be honest, that was a complete and total accident. Props to Brady, but anyone realistically thinking they can get a successful franchise quarterback in the sixth round wouldn’t draft the guy in the sixth round.”
I know by now haven’t we all heard/read all the accolades spoken about Mr Winston by that undrafted, arena league, world league, grocery stock clerk, two time NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP. The same guy who has thrown for 32,344 yards, 208 TD’s with a 65.5 percent completions for his career. You know who I am talking about right?
Kurt Warner
I know it is not always something that happens but it does happen now and then. Yes let’s be honest.
April 1st, 2015 at 7:26 pm
If Trent Green doesn’t get hurt in the preseason, we would never have heard of Kurt Warner.
April 1st, 2015 at 7:31 pm
I know. I had Trent Green that year in my Fantasy Football league.
Our league had it that if your starter went down, you automatically got the back up. I won that year.
At first I’m like, Kurt Warner? Isn’t he a retired running back from Seattle?
I had him and Terrell Davis from Denver.
I smoked everybody that year.
April 1st, 2015 at 7:33 pm
Dave injuries are a part of the game look how Brady got his shot yo play.
April 1st, 2015 at 7:37 pm
It’s clear they will take a Quarterback….but it’s not clear when. Common sense would suggest taking Winston, but I have said it before…..don’t be surprised if Mike Glennon is the starter this coming season.
They might not take either of the top two quarterbacks. I hope they do….but they may not.

The Titans supposedly like Mettenberger, who was also a 6th rounder… you know who else was? Bruce Gradkowski… that’s right, the Polish Rocket!
April 1st, 2015 at 7:58 pm
@Brandon. Gradkowski was the worst qb ive seen play for us! And Mettenberger couldve went higher if didnt tear his ACL and plead guilty to sexual assault.
April 1st, 2015 at 8:06 pm
Sooo wasnt there like 3-4 ppl pulling hard for Kafka to start this past season? What do u guys have to say?

StPeteBucsFan Says:

Actually, most of the currently starting offensive linemen in the league were drafted in the 3rd round or later.
MY WISH LIST (Not a mock!)
1st Round – Jameis Winston (or Mariota)
He’s the consensus pick, and there is probably at least a 05-97 percent chance he’s the one.
2nd Round – Eric Kendricks MLB
He is the closest thing to Luke Kuechly in the draft. We NEED him in Tampa, and we cannot risk him being taken by someone else.
3rd Round – Cameron Erving CENTER
If Winston is the pick, working with the same center he had in college could help him immensely. Erving is the best center in the draft, and if we have to trade back into the 2nd to get him, we should consider it.
IF STILL AVAILABLE
3rd Round (trade back into the 3rd) – Nate Orchard, Defensive End
This would only happen if he falls this far, which is possible. There are 4 DEs rated above him, so it is possible he could make it to round three. Compared to Trent Cole, who had seasons with 12+ sacks. Trade costs us this years 6th and next years 5th.
4th Round – Daryl Williams Offensive Guard
I’m not married to this one, but I see potential. He played OT I believe, but because of a few faults, translates better to OG in the pros. A competitive player with all the football character you want and NFL power to match. When he gets defenders lined up in his sweet spot, he can drive them out of the play. Tough guy who leads by example on the field.
5th Round – Nick O’Leary Tight End (drafted to play Full/Half Back)
Remember, this is a wish list. I know the chances are low he’ll fall this far. It is coincidence that he played with Winston. Changing him to Full/half back is perfect. He has an Alstott-like build (3 lbs heavier, 2″ taller), run blocks really well, and excels in the passing game as well. You may have noticed him as the only TE in the combine NOT wearing gloves. He was the one who caught everything.
5th Round – Kenny Bell Wide Reciever
People say we need a burner? This is the guy. Shredded with little body fat. Smart player. He likes to lull cornerbacks to sleep before hitting the gas and getting over the top of them for big plays. Possible return man too.
6th Round – (used in trade back into 3rd)
7th Round – Spencer Roth Punter
We need a punter, and this could be our guy, if he is still there. Punters usually go in the last 2 rounds, so he may be there for us. There are two others rated above him. Of course, we had a punter in the practice squad and I’m not sure how he is coming along, so we may not need him.

You’re crazy if you honestly think Kendricks will be available in the 2nd. Seriously delusional if your stupid mock draft has Erving dropping to the 3rd!!!!
Go home and try again!!!
Keyboard GMs are funny to watch.

Hey D.E.P
In case you missed this in BuccaneerBonzai post,
“MY WISH LIST (Not a mock!)”
Hey, maybe you need to try to read it again?
April 1st, 2015 at 8:39 pm
Thanks Bonzai for that. Someone needs to break up the monotony of all Jameis all the time.
April 1st, 2015 at 8:47 pm
Did the Kafka era ever begin?
April 1st, 2015 at 8:53 pm
Bonzai – Eric Kendricks MAY be available with pick #34 – but it’s probably 50/50 or worse that he will be available when we pick 2nd round.
Cam Erving almost certainly will not be available at #34. Most Mocks have him going somewhere between #20-#30. So saying you would like to pick up Erving in the 3rd round makes you look look like you have no idea what you are talking about.
I like both those players quite a bit. Especially Erving and he fits our biggest need as well (OL). Not getting my hopes up for either though unless we are willing to trade up to get one of them – and considering all of our needs – I think we need to hang onto all our picks and go BPA (with position need considered) or possibly even trade down in the 2nd to pick up an extra 3rd rounder and get some extra OL talent to start building OL in the right way – through the draft. LOTS of good OLinemen available rounds 2>4 this year.

Awesome picture of Winston at pro-day with LL&K watching like bosses:

Lol, no pressure or anything Jameis.
April 1st, 2015 at 9:42 pm
Some people are so stupid.
So one team 15 years ago drafted a HOF QB in the 6th round.
So that’s what the Bucs should do.
Morons.
April 1st, 2015 at 10:20 pm
You guys almost went an entire thread without mentioning the train wreck.
ALMOST.
April 1st, 2015 at 11:02 pm
It is good to be back. Ive been Snowmobiling in Yellowstone for the last week. Just a tad bit of fun. Missed you guys but not All that much. lol
April 1st, 2015 at 11:13 pm
Sign Tyler Wilson FTW
April 2nd, 2015 at 12:54 am
Based on Draftek.com 2015 BPA
1. Jameis Winston QB FSU
Winston should be drafted to be our much needed franchise quarterback.
2. Preston Smith DE Mississippi ST
Randy Gregory’s stock has fallen alot but I doubt he makes it to round two. So Smith, a true defensive end, should be perfect for pick 34. He has more weight at 271 and fill a position we are paper thin at.
3. Tre’ Jackson G FSU
Jackson’s rapport with Winston is a plus. A solid run blocker that should be available at the begining of round three. Needs to work to be a more complete lineman but a great pickup none the less.
4. Daryl Johnson T Oklahoma
A bit of a reach but Johnson can play either tackle spot and we cant get enough linemen this draft
4. Tre’ McBride WR W&M
He would have to get used to playing slot, but brings a good mix of size and speed to challenge Louis Murphy for that third receiver spot. We cant lack contingency if VJax or Evans goes down.
Well my mock is as good as any other fan’s on here 🙂
April 2nd, 2015 at 12:57 am
#Daryl WILLIAMS not Johnson. Sorry for the mixup.
April 2nd, 2015 at 7:35 am
“The Mike Kafka Era Is Over”……..There was one?! LOL That’s like saying the Josh McCown era is over. Hugh lost let me tell you!
April 2nd, 2015 at 9:01 am
D.E.P. is an idiot, lol.
Wish List. NOT A MOCK. Read my post again, dummy.
So far as where players will fall to, haven’t you people learned after all these years? Ratings and predictions mean nothing outside the top 10 picks…Mockers get it wrong ALL THE TIME after that.
Don’t believe me? Look at the mocks for the last previous years drafts and the actual way they played out.
So don’t believe a player won’t fall. It happens. A lot.
April 2nd, 2015 at 9:04 am
I think, of all OL players, the Bucs should target a good center first. Why? Because it would fix the guard spot as well, effectively dealing with two positions with one pick (EDS would move to guard).
Then all we need is a tackle.
April 2nd, 2015 at 9:05 am
By first, I don’t mean the first pick of the draft. Obviously, that goes on a QB.
April 2nd, 2015 at 9:09 am
Thought just occurred to me. Licht is hardly spending, right? We have money, but he has almost ignored Free Agency. Why?
Could it be they are considering the possibility of paying TWO first rounders?
Makes one think, doesn’t it?
They might have a potential trade partner lined up.
They might be planning to trade up into the first again.
They might decide to go after someone other than Winston, then take one of the lesser QBs like Petty.
Of course, the media refuses to cover such scenarios. Instead it’s “We already know what Tampa will do, so let’s skip ahead to the next pick.”
