Marcus Mariota: Sack Happy?

April 6th, 2015

Sacks seem to be an issue.

Since the end of the college football season, the spreadsheeters over at ProFootballFocus.com have updated their Excel programs and tapped away at their keyboards inputing data to determine the best players in the 2015 NFL draft.

Naturally, Marcus Mariota, the star Oregon spread-option quarterback, a guy many Bucs fans not-so-secretly pine for, is one the spreadsheeters have dissected.

Per pickpocket-thwartingBucs-uniform-frowningAllie-LaForce-smittenBig-Ten-Network-hatingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball-box-score-readingNPR-listeningfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training Peter King, of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports fame, it seems, based on the data from Pro Football Focus, Mariota sure gets sacked a whole lot for a gifted mobile quarterback.

Mariota took more sacks than he should. Mariota was sacked 23 percent of the time he was pressured, the sixth-highest rate among quarterbacks in the draft class. Florida State’s Jameis Winston was sacked only 11.5 percent of his pressured dropbacks, second-best in the class.

See? It’s not BS when folks, who have actually watched Winston, state he is elusive in the pocket. His teammates even told Joe he is hard to bring down.

But, the Mariota Band will have their index fingers stuck in the ears and yell “LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA … “ if one ever suggests Mariota may be something less than his hardcore followers want him to be.

    Winston=Leftwich
jamies will revert back to the Leftwich throwing motion in a game situation. at a pro day there was no pressure.

    Winston=tebow
tim tebow improved his Leftwich throwing motion lobbing passes in practice/try out situations. timmy got in a real game and reverted back to the Leftwich throwing motion.

trade the pick down or take a player that is not a QB.

  2. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

Jameis Winston is our new QB!

    Thee end.

  3. P'cola Buc Says:

Mariota = RG111….he will be traded in a couple of years to Chip Kelly where he will improve and finally translate his talents to the NFL.

  4. Demetrios Says:

LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-It’s better to take a sack than throw a pick-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA.

  5. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

P’cola Buc …that’s if Kelly is still around.

  6. Snook Says:

    Draft Winston.

Not a glorified flag football QB.

  7. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

@Joe..perhaps you should have also mentioned Mariota’s number of fumbles as well, very high numbers. For the La La La La crowd.

  8. drdneast Says:

Sounds like a guy who gets panicky when his first option isn’t open and he has to start looking for another receiver and doesn’t know where to go or what to do.

  9. P'cola Buc Says:

Yes we will start our turn around once Winston is a Buccaneer. Only thing left to decide is to buy the Winston Jersey in home Red, away White or traditional original Orange….what do you think?

  10. Sim Says:

Yes, but Jameis also threw 18 picks to Mariotta’s 4. JW was sacked 17x to Mariota’s 31. This may have somethign to do with the clearly superior defenses in the PAC12. But , more importantly, there is something to be said for the game management aspect of taking a sack. Maybe Marcus was taking an extra 14 sacks while Jameis was throwing an extra 14 picks. Could it be possible that the sack stat shows that JW panics a lot more under pressure and has a tendency to throw the ball up for grabs very often. Oh I forgot, the picks were the receivers’ fault.

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

Its not that Mariota is not elusive in the pocket. Its when his First read is covered he gets confused!

  12. charactermatters Says:

    Really Joe?
It’s the Mariota supporters who stick their fingers in their ears whenever a weakness is pointed out? Thanks for clearing that one up. I’m so glad that Winston supporters are so eager to admit his flaws!

  13. bucrightoff Says:

This will get blocked since it says Jameis has terrible footwork, but for those that can click it before it goes… (Moral of the story? Getting Hundley later on and sitting him might be ideal)

  14. ufcguy Says:

Or u could look up how many fumbles mariota had along with those sacks. But im sure that 4.4 speed will make it all better

  15. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

The number is 27. Mariota fumbled the ball 27 times in 3 seasons.

  16. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

bucrightoff…thanks for that, but I already read, this morning actually.

As most know I never miss a Winston article out there on the net. I’ve read quite a bit on MM as well.

  17. P'cola Buc Says:

87…..yes, I believe in 2-3 years Kelly will be out of Philadelphia….but still in the NFL if only as a OC…..it will be that unknown team that the reunion of Mariota/ Kelly will take place….

  18. Snook Says:

This may have somethign to do with the clearly superior defenses in the PAC12.

    ————————–

    BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

There was 8 PAC 12 defenses ranked 80th or HIGHER.

  19. P'cola Buc Says:

Expect those int & fumbles to notably increase in the NFL at least the 1st two years…. Not only the on field adjustment but psychologically as well.

  20. Eric Says:

In reality both Jameis and Marcus benefited from vastly superior talent on their teams vs. the competition. (most of the time anyway)

Neither will have that benefit quarterbacking our buccaneers.

The rookie rude awakening will occur with either.

But a lot better than tuning in to Mike Glennon under center. Please no.

This, unfortunately is the way that fans are. Not just Mariota fans or Jameis fans, but fans in general. Especially fans that have continued to support and be tormented by a garbage team like the Bucs. We want somebody to come in and revive us, and will refuse to believe that the person we pegged as a comeback kid turned out to be bad (aka Josh Freeman).

Just don’t forget the matching Jamesis bra. Gotta keep those man boobs from flopping around out there!

You people on this site are so eat up with Winston that it ain’t funny !! Some times I say to myself don’t wish for something you don’t really want, for it just may come back to bite you in the a$$. So I think I will throw in the crying towel when its all said and done to you Winston lovers …….

  24. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol sure looked impressive in that 40 time though hahaha. meanwhile the slow guy is more busy running the team. if you can escape sacks in college, your just RG3 waiting to happen mariota

There’s one PAC 12 team (Stanford #3) in the top 25 ranked total defenses on the NCAA site.

    There are 4 ACC teams. FSU played #1, #6. & #11.

  27. Armando Says:

If any of the Gator morons had actually watched Winston this past season they would have seen that most of his picks were not due to pressure (rolling from the pocket or pocket collapse) but Winston throwing to a spot that a receiver didn’t run to or a defense making a damn good play – some were just catching the ball. Winston is alot like Brett Favre, he will throw the damn and I know Bucs fans would have loved to have Favre.

  28. JW5alltheway Says:

@sim is delusional, just like most ANTI JW posters on this site. JW and FSU played vastly superior defenses in comparison to MM and Oregon. The PAC 12 is known for having crappy defenses. If @SIM bothered to look at any stats before his ignorant post he would not have made it. But for giggles and so @SIM can be more educated, here ya go
    http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/team/_/stat/total/position/defense

  29. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

Armando ….That’s what I’m stuck on right now. Brett Favre, that’s who he reminds me of so far. Things could change though once he starts playing in the pros and becomes his own QB.

    24 more days til’ Christmas!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Jameis

  31. WalkdaPlank Says:

“I know Bucs fans would have loved to have Favre.”

Who says we still can’t? 🙂

    Let’s call him up!

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

I just don’t feel that good about Mariota ever being anything more than an Alex Smith. His instincts are only to throw to very open WRs and that is going to be incredibly hard to change; as well as his instinct to run.

Alex Smith’s leading WR was Jamaal Charles; because he checks down so much and doesn’t take chances. That’s my fear with Mariota.. It’s not that he potentially can’t develop a more killer instinct for passing I just have never seen it and think it’d be pretty crazy to just project something like that.

  33. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

It’s so much fun listening to these complaints, counter arguments, and denials. How many days left to the draft?

  34. bucs4lyfe Says:

we’ve got glennon and he’s great at taking sacks so just another reason i’ll pass on MM. but he and JW will be battling for who’s the best to come out of the 2015 draft class I hope neither is a bust

  35. P'cola Buc Says:

    @Biff Barker

I don’t care if he wears a 44DD as long as he puts a “W” on the board!

  37. ATrain Says:

Joe are you getting paid by the Bucs to sell Winston..

fingers in the ears? Winston fans don’t listen to anything and attack as soon as anything is said negative about this man.

Winston is not the savior. But time will tell.

Joe be ready for the BLAST when or if Winston fails.

You guys think Winston will turn it all around.

    WRONG to many holes..

You divide the fan base and you know what will happen… YOU will be watching the L.A. Bucs

BE a fan … back which every you want.. But dang stop with Blind following..

“Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

You people would choose Cam Newton over Aaron Rodgers? ”

Mariota played in the same Spread Option offense that Cam played in. Mariota is closer to Newton than to Rodgers. Rodgers offense at Cal was NOT a spread option. But, hey, who needs facts?

  39. JW5alltheway Says:

@Barry Bryan Joel all agree I find it funny when people claim MM is going to be Aaron Rodgers because Father Dungy said so. His track record of scouting NFL caliber QBs says it all. I’ll pass on his biased opinion anyway. Here is a fact about Father Dungy’s opinion. He admitted he has never watched JW play. That’s all I needed to hear to further my disdain for his “opinions” #Knowledge

  40. mjc Says:

Until we actually sign or get a real OL , it does matter who the QB is. Whoever the QB is will be on the run after each snap.

We can’t run or pass last year and with no improvements on the OL a rookie QB is not changing that.

  41. charactermatters Says:

Rogers offense was closer to a spread than to a pro style offense. This is one of the reasons he fell in the draft. Not the only reason, but one of them.

  42. Luther Says:

Mariota fans are going to be really salty around 8:15 on draft night. I say Mariota fans and not Buc’s fans because I’m sure they will all jump ship and profess their love for the team that drafts Mariota. Great kid and wish nothing but the best for him unless NO drafts him. We will get to see what he can do in another 2-3 years.

  43. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Sure, but, connect the dots with his initial statement. He’s saying Mariota = Rodgers, and Winston = Cam.

We all know Cam ran the same Spread Option at Auburn that Mariota runs. If anyone is closer to Cam, it’s Mariota.

There’s nothing comparable between the game of Winston and Cam.

  44. Kyle Says:

He was sacked 17 and 18 times in 2012 and 2013, so it’s more likely the 2014 numbers are an aberratio. Winston was sacked 27 times in 2013, but you won’t see Joe post an article about that . . .

This kid does not panic. Anyone suggesting that the sack totals speak to that are delusional. I guarantee you haven’t watched much film on him.

  45. Crimson_Warrior Says:

:0 port richey I am flabbergasted by how ridiculous that comment is. Uuuuuuhm ok so uuuuuuuhm I don’t even know where to begin. Uhm, so if you make things up…are they true? Do you really believe what you’re saying or are you just trying to be a troll/douche? Cuz if you actually believe it then you must be blind and if you’re just being a troll then carry on… Byron Leftwich!?…I’d smack your face if I was in front of you…you people need to decide if you’re bucs fans or not all this “Pro Winston” oh I’m “Pro Mariotta” FOH grow up are you a “Pro bucs” person or not.

  46. Sam Says:

just like the JW Down and Dirty Band have their ears plugged with his off the field stuff

  47. J Says:

    @ Sim

That is a very good point. Taking sacks show that he is not panicky.

    Bad passes show McCown syndrome.

  48. Luther Says:

David Carr was a whole lot of “not panicky”. Mariota may try to go that route. Buck fans remember Rob “Robosack” Johnson. That guy was an athlete too and never panicked because he was so good at taking sacks.

  49. JFat Says:

And Kyle wins the post. Winston fanboys should really avoid stats when trying to make a case for Winston’s superiority. Stick to the canned “pro style offense” argument.

The fumble argument is somewhat legit…but those 27 fumbles were over 3 years and only 11 of them were lost. Not a great stat for Marcus but you have to remember he ran with the ball quite a bit more than Winston.

  50. lurker Says:

    as i have been saying…

mariota and his “athleticism” were sacked 7 times in one game by a 3-9 (2-7 pac 12) washington state team.

ps and washington state did not have a power defense…lol

  51. JFat Says:

Yep lurker, sacked 7 times and accounted for 5 TDs with 0 interceptions and a W. A paltry 95.8 QBR. Still had 58 net yards rushing, hell that’s almost a whole season on the ground for Winston.

I’ll take that over 4 ints and 2 TDs w/ a 6.8 rating any day.

Again, stay away from the stat lines if you are trying to make a case against Mariota. It’s useless.

  52. kaput Says:

College stats are mostly irrelevant. Look at all of the Heisman winner that haven’t don’t a thing in the NFL.

It really is all about what translates to the next level, and on that basis Mairota looks more like Kaepernick or Griffin than he does Rivers or Roethlisburger.

  53. Pickgrin Says:

Geez. Is it draft day yet? The arguments and comparisons are getting soooo old.

It couldn’t be more obvious that Winston is the Bucs #1 selection. It’s time for the Mariota crowd to let it go and embrace Winston. Anything else is just counter-productive at this point.

  54. lurker Says:

stat line says 7 sacks and barely a win versus a crappy team!

all the haters say winston won’t get away with that in the pros…same as mariota, and moreso. mariota played against no-names. weak-sauce.

  55. JFat Says:

Yep, them Gators were rough this year… 4 ints and barely a win against a crappy team. Works both ways.

  56. MTM Says:

    @ Joe

Sacks do not equal a turnover. Correct me if I’m wrong but an interception actually gives the ball to the opponents offense. LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA….

  57. lurker Says:

all mariota’s stat line says is look at the big pictures on the sidelines and let the system work. when the system breaks down, he loses!

watch the games, silly jfat. it is obvious to everyone winston is the better qb.

    win, it’s in his name
    #winninwithwinston #justwinstonbaby #jameischrist

  58. lurker Says:

jfat, you can keep liking the second-best qb prospect and your wrong opinion. i will take winston #1 overall.

    _____________________________________________________________

Quite right. In fact, not a single QB considered a top 10 QB in the league has a Heisman or National Title. Maybe not even a single top 15 QB. Which is why Hundley (or someone else) likely ends up being the best QB drafted.

  60. TheDon Says:

The Bucs are already selling Jameis Jerseys. its happening!

  61. JFat Says:

lurker, I realize Winston will most likely be the pick and I’m OK with that. I’ll support him, but I’ll probably have a bit more of a critical eye for him than a lot of the posters here.

I’ve watched more of Winston than Mariota but I’ve seen enough to know my preference, I don’t really give a deuce if my opinion is popular.

  62. White Tiger Says:

This is yet another example of forced perspective – PAC-12 accounted for TWICE as many SACKS the the ACC!

Oregon played teams with the 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th ranked sack leaders last season

FSU only played Clemson – which was the 7th ranked defense.

The top 5 sack specialists of the PAC-12 delivered 74 sacks, while the top 5 sack “specialists” of the ACC only accounted for 46 sacks ALL SEASON.

See, when you look at context…Mariota played tougher defenses in college. Winston played against weaker opposition…which kinda ives a new perspective to his ability to read defenses.

Could these guys BE any more in the tank for the Criminole?

  63. Luther Says:

@TheDon I’m not sure where you are seeing Winston Jersey’s but I plan on buying a jersey once he is officially selected and not before.

  68. Johnny Dejay Says:

Winston sold me with the 100% Juicy Juice comparison. Man, I love that Juicy Juice.

  69. JSmalls Says:

    JFat? A critical eye?

I’m a huge Winston supporter but his success or lack there of will be pretty black/white after 2-3 seasons. If someone is supporting Winston if he hasn’t produced in that time frame then they’ll be more delusional than current Marriota supporters.

  70. Skyline Crew Says:

Or you can read it as other analyst have as Mariota eating more sacks and not taking the risky throw like Winston does. Of course they like the risky throws, but saved him a lot of sacks. Mariota just eats the sack and moves on. Rodgers gets sacked a lot as does Wilson. Not a big concern.

  71. MM Says:

I kicked JWs ass 59-20 in January and I still dont get any respect.

  72. grafikdetail Says:
