Lavonte David And QB Pressures

Want to know how much the Bucs defense under Lovie Smith changed the team? Look no further than stud linebacker Lavonte David’s stats.

While playing for commander Greg Schiano, David, with scant pressure coming from the defensive line, was used as a weapon.

In 2013, per the spreadsheeters at Pro Football Focus, 19 times in passing situations offenses were stupid and failed to block David. Of those 19 times, David pressured the quarterback 10 times resulting in hitting the signalcaller five times and four sacks.

Under Lovie Smith? Big difference.

Whether it was because teams came to their senses and blocked David, or just because defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier didn’t blitz David (or a combination of both), the Bucs’ outside linebacker was only unblocked five times in passing situations, resulting in two hurries, three quarterback hits and no sacks.

Joe wouldn’t be bothered by this if the Bucs got to the quarterback without sending David. They did not last year.

Lovie took the weapon right out of David’s arsenal. Let him play how he plays best.

  2. MadMax Says:

Failure of end pass rush just might have played a part.

    BUCS MADE TRADE WITH REDSKINS
The Redskins have acquired S Dashon Goldson and a 7th-round pick in 2016 from the Buccaneers for a 2016 6th-round pick, according to ESPN and media reports. Goldson had one INT in two seasons with Tampa Bay, who signed free-agent S Chris Conte.

  4. robert 9 Says:

maybe because the WR were so wide open they got the ball out

  5. Sam Says:

    Goldson traded…

  6. NCMike Says:

    We traded the Hawk!

Let’s be honest though this team hasn’t had much of a pass rush, with Schiano or Lovie.

How many times over the last 4 years have you yelled out the words “All the freaking time in the world” while watching an opposing QB just sit back there and take a nap, watch TV and then decide to throw the ball?

    For me I can’t count that high…

  8. NCMike Says:

Hey Joe …….. That’s cause a Lovie team sucks! Simple as that

  9. bucs4lyfe Says:

I don’t agree joe….under schiano lavonte was the second leading sack leader, this year only a few sacks came from a position other than the d line and they ended up with a few more sacks than the year before. all those sacks came from the d line so the bucs got the same pressure without the blitzing

  10. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

    I called him The Squawk!

  11. NCMike Says:

I said it less with Schiano

  12. rayjay1122 Says:

Well hopefully the Redskins will suck and that 6th round pick will be at least at the top of the 6th round. I would have liked to see a slightly higher pick but hey, we signed him as a free agent and did not give any picks up to get him. I wonder who the safeties are going to be this season?

  13. Skyline Crew Says:

Lovie doesn’t conform to players. He gets rid of the good ones and brings in crappy ones. To expect a lot from Lovie is crazy. Can’t wait until he is fired next year.

OH you mean like getting rid of Michael Bennett and bringing in Daniel te’o nesheim?

  15. pick6 Says:

the system reined in DB55’s “impact stats” as well. as LD54 and the team gets into the system he ought to replace those sacks, hurries, and fumbles into PBUs, picks, and defensive scores

  16. bucs4lyfe Says:

leave the sacks to the D line and get us interceptions and fumbles that’s what we need from lavonte

  17. Skyline Crew Says:

You can add Zuttah and others to that list as well bucs4lyfe.

how many wins did zuttah help get for this franchise? did you forget what this teams record has been like for the last decade? does not matter who comes and goes only wins and losses. but if it helps you to think lovie will get fired after this season ok but your a bucs fan so your used to disappointment

  19. bucrightoff Says:

Chris Conte is likely to be oyr starting safety next year….because he knows Lovie’s system. Nevermind that he’s utterly terrible and possible worse than a certain goat named Sabby, he knows Lovie’s system so he’s good.

Anyways, Lavonte is a read and react, instinct type player. Now Lovie wants him to play his role in the system and not be a read and react type player, just go to your spot and do your job. It’s not what he excels at, but Lovie can’t (or won’t) adapt his scheme to maximize individual talent. If Revis was a waste in this scheme, so is Lavonte as he’s currently being used.

  20. Pickgrin Says:

Looking for a big year from Lavonte David. Get this guy locked up long term Licht.

  21. Skyline Crew Says:

So you only look at a player and ask if he won a game? That is the first time I have ever heard that. No wonder you don’t like anybody on the team. No one person wins a game. Zuttah was better than any of the lineman we had this year. If you can’t see that then there is no help for you.

  22. cover deuce Says:

You mean our defensive “guru” failed to recognize and utilize the best talents of one of his best players?

    I’m shocked.

  23. salish_seamonster Says:

Before you can start sending blitzes, you need to make sure the back end of the defense knows what it’s doing. Not sure that was the case earlier in the year.

  24. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

This defense will be drastically improved next season with players who want to be in Tampa or are on 1 year prove it deals. I see the Bucs needing a LDE, FS, and maybe a slot corner. Or maybe and outside corner and pushing Verner into the slot more.

  25. The Original Kevin Says:

Again….you can’t get the number 1 pick when your doing things the right way…..

    Tanked

  26. pick6 Says:

this is why it makes sense to hire a football savvy GM and let him figure out the coaching hire based on a football guy’s evaluation of the roster & league. the bucs have not done that for their last 3 GM hires – all inherited a coach the Glazers had picked. the glazers looked at this defense and saw the next sapp and brooks and wanted to find the next dungy. the problem is that David in particular is a very different LB than brooks, and along with revis and foster it really looked like the bucs were moving away from the style of play their best defenders were thriving with. the scheme we were running (more blitz and man to man) was a good idea in most facets, it was just horribly run.

but, the past is the past…hopefully David can shift & do what i mentioned above and make his plays disrupting the passing game from his side of the LOS instead of the other team’s side like before
