Dirk Koetter: Mariota “Was Outstanding”

New Bucs OC Dirk Koetter likes what he saw in Oregon

New Bucs OC Dirk Koetter loves what he saw in Oregon

Is the gap narrowing?

Is new Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter leading a Mariota Gang mutiny in the ranks at One Buc Palace?

Koetter was glowing to the mother ship, Buccaneers.com, after leading Tampa Bay’s private workout of Marcus Mariota in Oregon yesterday.

“As much as tape as we’ve watched and as many times as we’ve met with Marcus, to see him throw live and be right next to him – and us getting to say what throws and what drops, us actually running the workout – there’s a lot of value there,” said Koetter. “I thought he was outstanding.”

Though he took a few shotgun snaps near the end of the sequence, Mariota mostly lined up under center, with fellow draft prospect Hroniss Grasu delivering the ball. Ducks wide receiver Keanon Lowe stood in designated spots to catch Mariota’s passes, simulating a variety of outs, slants, digs and deep balls. The throw that drew the most praise was a hard line drive of a deep out, which is a deceptively difficult pass to execute well.

“That’s one that not every quarterback in the NFL feels comfortable making,” said Koetter. “So we wanted to challenge him. It was great having Coach Smith and Jason here. We only gave him about 45 throws, but we gave him some hard ones.”

(There’s more to read via the link above.)

So is Koetter one of the “sponsors” inside One Buc Palace, as referred to by NFL Network draft guru and former scout Daniel Jeremiah?

Maybe. But Joe’s not buying that Lovie Smith and Jason Licht have compromised their love of Jameis Winston. Joe has looked into the eyes of those Buccaneer men recently. And Joe doubts a good 45 throws by Mariota yesterday could change their leanings.

Winston’s private workout is this morning.

Que the Winston/Fsu lovers who are about to say Koetter is an idiot and knows nothing about football.

  2. port richey george Says:

when Koetter says that it sounds like the bucs are trying to get someone to trade up to get mariota. I hope they do. the bucs could rebuild the team into a contender if they use the picks they would receive correctly.

  3. Harry Says:

As long as L&L pick a QB, nothing short of that. I prefer Winston, but L&L are the “experts”, allegedly, anyway (IMO, they still have to prove that). But if the Bucs don’t come away with a franchise QB in this draft, after passing on all QBs last draft, I am done. BURN friggin OBP if that happens!!!

  4. Harry Says:

Que the Winston/Fsu haters… who know nothing about football. LOL

  5. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Marcus didn’t look nearly as good in the Gruden QB camp segments. He kept misspeaking the play in the huddle. That is something that will take some time to overcome.

  6. 77bassguitarist Says:

What was he supposed to say? This is a none story as far as I’m concerned. Just coach speak

  7. Posey99 Says:

  8. Buddhaboy Says:

Rebuild into a contender, like the st louis rams when they traded spots with redskins.

Point is, nothing is a sure thing. But when you need a quarterback, you must take one.

  9. I know why Says:

Think of all the talent Winston has had around him, 1st round receivers, high drafted players last year and this year and then realize that Mariota doesn’t have anywhere near the same “NFL” level talent. I still think L&L take Winston, but I wouldn’t .

  10. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    FIRE !!! Koetter
    JOE’s
    Jameis Organized Enablers

  11. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

After watching Gruden’s QB Camp last night featuring MM. MM does not seem to have the intangibles and swagger to be a successful QB at the next level. Even Gruden said that MM almost put him to sleep.

  12. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Like childhood sandlots disputes
lets settle this with a footrace….

  13. David Says:

@ I’m a great person….that’s the difference buddy boy between most of us and the Mariota Mob, we WANT Winston but understand if they pick Mariota it’s something they know that we don’t and will still root for him to be successful vs. bashing him and threatening to walk out on our team. #removethewoolfromyoureyes. Lol

  14. robert 9 Says:

so licht is pumping JW and koetter is pumping MM

whole lotta smoke guys and gals

  15. voice of reason Says:

    TRADE BACK AND DRAFT PETTY!
ok, probably not, but i sure liked him on gruden last night. he is gonna be good in a couple years, i think.

  16. danati74 Says:

An article awhile ago stated one of the reasons Lovie liked Koetter was he liked Winston. When picking the new OC, that is one reason why we didn’t get the Bears ex coach. Not reading into too much of these articles, just means we have too much time on our hands before the draft. Its wise The Bucs are taking their time, but on the flip too much time can make the wrong decision. By now, how could these guys not know who they want? Smokescreen? For what we need a QB,…even Stevie Wonder can see we need a QB. Trade down? Did we throw the whole 2014 season to trade down or go get what we need.

  17. 87Creamsicles Ego Says:

Mariotas a joke I challenge him to a dual *slap!!!*

  18. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

Mariota is the pick. The writing is on the wall

  19. Bryce Says:

That’ good lot of smoke lot of deception makes for a good beginning to the 2015 Draft all options on the table

  20. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

I hope MM is every bit as good as Winston. A no lose choice is the best choice. The worst choice is to trade down or pick another player.

  21. OB Says:

Interesting comment and we know how good at QB picking L&L are.

I wonder if the Glazers are leaning on L&L or Koetter for the pick. As I said before whoever they pick has to be the right one.

What did Koetter say about Winston?

  22. Edgewalker Says:

when Koetter says that it sounds like the bucs are trying to get someone to trade up to get mariota. I hope they do. the bucs could rebuild the team into a contender if they use the picks they would receive correctly.”

Without a franchise QB, you have nothing.

  23. Patrick in VA Says:

There’s no reason to think that them liking his practice means that they have to like it at the expense of their decision to take Winston. I like the way the Bucs cheerleaders look but that doesn’t mean I think less of my wife. No reason to think that the Bucs brass sees Mariota as anything more than a cute girl in a short skirt

  24. Jeagan1999 Says:

You can’t ignore the fact that the Bucs new OC, Dirk Koetter, coached alongside (now) Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich for 9 straight seasons and the two are very good friends. If anyone knows what Mariota is capable of, it would be Helfrich (who was at Oregon the entire time Mariota was there). According to an article in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, Helfrich said his two biggest influences in football were Chip Kelly and Dirk Koetter! It’s not too hard to imagine Helfrich convincing Koetter that Mariota can do everything that Koetter needs him to do in his new Bucs offense.

Mariota was also great on Gruden’s QB Camp last night. Still a bit quiet, but he showed competitiveness, a sense of humor, a calmness and and an unflappable attitude (he also showed he can “command the huddle” and take snaps direct from center….hopefully putting those silly arguments to rest!). Gruden tries to rile up young guys, but he couldn’t do it with Marcus! A kid with that kind of poise, and the athletic and arm talent that he possesses will go far in the NFL and make the team that Drafts him very happy!

  25. Underdog Says:

Sounds like the Bucs are really trying to get a huge offer for that #1 pick

  26. BigMacAttack Says:

I think the Bucs will trade down, possibly twice and draft Mariota around 6 or 7.

  27. Dreambig Says:

Scotty – I agree, after watching Gruden’s QB camp, MM was answering his questions with one or two words and a bit timidly. That is what you do when your a little intimidated by the situation. He seems like a bright guy and his throws that Gruden put him through looked pretty good, to me anyway. I think he is going to need some time to get over being intimidated in the NFL and I wouldn’t be surprised if he struggles for a while. Bucs better draft one of these two guys!

  28. Dewey Selmon Says:

He probably did look outstanding. which is good if something happens to Winston before the draft. we have a solid plan B.

  29. Mariota Joe Says:

JBF’s day is shattered. MM just might be the pick. And anyone who says they “know” who the the Bucs are picking is just plain silly.

  30. Jeagan1999 Says:

Patrick….the difference is that the Bucs can have either one…you can’t! 🙂 – Sorry, man, but you walked right into that one! (No disrespect to Mrs. Patrick in VA! 😉 )

  31. David Says:

@I know why…that is the most stupid comment I’ve ever read about why not to take a QB. He had NfL talent around him so let’s not draft him? Who are u referring to? Rashad Green? At best a 3rd to 4 rd pick? O..the two seniors Christian Green and Scooter Haggins who got passed up by freshmen?! What about Nick O’Leary…3rd to 5th round tight end. Karlo Williams…not even projected to get drafted. The o-line has good individual players but underperformed until 7th 8th game in the season…c’mon, 26-1 (something like that) if that’s what happens when surrounded by “NFL talent” I’ll take that in Tampa. You wouldn’t?

  32. cnvertbleweathr Says:

Sure, he can make every throw, but does he have that personality “oozing with charisma”, or is he a dead fish? Has Joe seen the skepticism in the eyes of L&L like he sees admiration towards Jameis? All very important factors when judging the potential success of your franchise QB. What a joke.

First Johnny Football, now Jameis. Joe doesn’t seem to really care about the character of these primadonnas coming out of school, nor the impact that their cockiness has on the outlook of their career.

  33. Patrick in VA Says:

    Well played Jeagan… well played

  34. DallasBuc Says:

I have had a sneaking suspicion this whole time that incompetent Lovie Smith will find a way not to draft the best QB in this draft. This only feeds into my paranoia.

87- you have been calling my critisism of the current leadership harsh. Is it unjustified after 2-14 and intentionally starting McCown? Will it be harsh if Winston is somehow not a Buccaneer on April 30?

  35. bucs4lyfe Says:

MM fans are grasping for straws and any positive news you can get….no one ever said MM wasn’t a really good quarterback no one said he didn’t have accuracy we simply said he’s not better than JW. of course he’s supposed to look good in a practice setting with no pass rush and everything basically being simulated, I suspect Winston is going to look “outstanding” as well. lol one day one private workout shouldn’t change the minds of a franchise….that’s raiders type thinking, Winston and mariota are going to look good in private workouts and we know that so all the other intangibles are going to be the deciding factor. both will play alittle bit differently when facing a pass rush

  36. cnvertbleweathr Says:

@Jeagan1999 Thank you! Facts like that seem to be swept under the rug in these parts. NOBODY knows what is gonna be happening come draft day. You better believe Helfrich would like to see his boy go #1 and he likely has the ear of our new OC.

  37. WalkdaPlank Says:

Either Winston is the pick, or L&L are blowing more smoke than any other No.1 Overall team in NFL History for unknown reasons. My bet would be on the former.

  39. TheShaz Says:

Come on! What are they going to say? “He sucked!!!!”

No, if he looked great, they will say he looked great, if he looked “OK” they will say he looked great, if he stunk up the joint, they will say he looked great.

If they saw something to take him over Winston(doubtful) then they saw something. If not, if they think this kid will struggle to adjust to NFL pro offenses, SMOKE SCREEN TIME, let some other team discover that.

The Bucs staff might be all smiles leaving Oregon, but I bet they will be is near ecstasy leaving Tallahassee today.

  40. bucs4lyfe Says:

……….moron YOU sound post like a stalker slash creepy peaking through dorm girls window cant get a girlfriend angry about it type of pedifile that fantasizes about rape

  41. Eric Says:

I love Jameis, but that Marcus Mariota sure looks good too.

If he prefers Marcus and thinks he can design an offense around him, who knows.

  42. BFFL Says:

Koetter (who has coached Leftwich) will be thinking WTF when he sees Winstons big gut and profuse sweating today.

  43. Celly Says:

Lets see what Koetter says today about Winston’s private workout…

It’ll be interesting to see his choice of words in comparison to the words he used for Mariota.

Still think (and want) the pick to be Winston, but again, as most Winston supporters have said, if they do choose Mariota, i’ll definitely be #TeamMariota, cause at the end of the day, i’m #TeamBucaneers.

  45. Jeagan1999 Says:

The simple fact is NONE of us here really know for sure which way Lovie/Licht/Koetter are leaning, and the Bucs have NO EARTHLY REASON to tip their hand either way! We will probably not know until the pick is in the Comissioner’s hand on April 30th. The Bucs gain nothing by announcing early who they want, and with the rookie pay scale, there’s NO incentive to negotiating early with Winston, Mariota or whoever they decide to take at#1. So, in the meantime, let’s just all sit back and enjoy the ride. If Mariota or Winston is the pick, I will be excited about our new QB! Dont know if I can take another 2-14 season!

  46. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Dude, where’s my car?

  47. YoungBuc Says:

Honestly at this point I’m willing to take either quarterback, though I’m more in favor of Mariota. These two have two big cons against them with one being more than the other

Everyone worries about how ready Marcus is for the NFL and it seems like everyone keeps trying to find something wrong, first his footwork which by combine time he showed he had it down, showing varies drops. Next his ability to be under center which he took all but a few from under center in both his pro day and private workout, next his ability to command a huddle? how many other little things do y’all need to find before you give this guy the go-ahead.

Then there is Winston who everyone claims is his off-field problems that will steer teams away but honestly I don’t think that’s as big of an issue as reporters are making it out to be. Really his biggest downfall (I know I have addressed this several times) is his interceptions, some of them to completely open defenders. He rushes the football when under pressure and unfortunately there is no real way of testing this until he’s drafted but with the Bucs in rebuilding mode, to draft a interception prone QB could be a set-back

I’ll be a bucs fan no matter the QB, god knows I’ve supported the rest of our crappy choices but we’re comparing Apples & Oranges

  48. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

Winston will lose this battle with Mariota just like the playoff game.

  49. bucs4lyfe Says:

at this point I would take any one of the quarterbacks in this draft over starting glennon, we’ve already rode that train and we know exactly where the next stop is. Winston’s TEAM did lose to Mariota in the playoff game but it was where gm’s and scout were able to see how more pro ready Winston was than mariota. lol lets not use that in this discussion because if that’s the case then we can say cardale jones beat the crap out of mariota

  50. JMan Says:

All I know is I want the guy our OC wants. He knows more about what the offense will be than L & L who have shown to be criminally incompetent thus far (Lovie anyway).

    If he wants Winston, Ok
    Mariota Ok.

  51. 87Creamsicles Ego Says:

I saw clips of Winston and he sounded very intimidated and nervous too, but still confident. Some ppl are nervous on camera… Grudens an intimidating guy too for these young guys.

  52. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

This just in: The Bucs announce that they are going to select both Mariotta and Winston to subdue the irate fans who would be unhappy with one or the other!

  53. Jacko101 Says:

Opposite of Celly, I hope the pick is MM, but I’d it’s JM I’ll be the biggest JM supporter because I love my Bucs.

  54. R.O. Says:

You liked Petty on Gruden? Maybe in 3 yrs. he couldn’t get the protection calls correct in that no pressure environment. MM was whispering in the huddle. He needs to grow a set. Has zero presence… Hundley was fun to watch and 3 yrs maybe could be ready.

  55. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

I am a huge proponent of Mariota, but if Koetter wants Winston for some reason, so be it. I’ll support either one.

    bucs4lyfe,
The same could be said about Winston’s 27 victories that he gets so much credit for.

  56. Barry Says:

Team Buccaneers (Glazers-Licht-Smith-Koetter) are not all sold on Winston. Glazers aren’t for sure. Could it be all lean Mariota and only Licht is the Winstonite? It’s possible Joe, right?

    #DP #HGH #PEDs #BrainDeadRetard

  57. Jeagan1999 Says:

JMan…..great point! Dirk Koetter will be designing and running the offense, and he will have a huge amount of input on what he wants from his QB! And since none of us know for sure what the new offense will look like, none of us really know what kind of QB he envisions running it!

However the Bucs are in a great spot for a new OC. You’ve got a choice between a charismatic, strong armed, pro-style, classic drop back passer (Winston), and a poised, incredibly athletic, dual threat, doesn’t make many mistakes and is extremely accurate guy (Mariota). I’m sure Koetter can mold one of these guys into the QB of his dreams!

  58. bucrightoff Says:

The Eagles are still looking to come get Mariota. You have to at least give the appearance you might take him. The Eagles could end up giving up at least 4 1st and 2nd round picks to move up to #1. Gotta at least make them think it’s possible and maybe they give up a package above the RGIII package.

  59. MTM Says:

Anything positive about MM must be a smokescreen. You Winstonites are like a cult followers. Keep drinking the Kool Aid and you’ll see the promise land. The Glazers are going weigh all the information including last McClown signing and draft Mariota.
Nobody wants to see Leftwich 2.0. They are very similar in build, both have elongated release and throw picks like Mardi Gras beads.

  60. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Oh, I see…if someone with the Bucs favors Mariota, it’s a smokescreen. If someone favors Winston, it’s a lock…

    …please…

…the truth is as many mocks that predict Winston, mocks have been wrong more than right in the past. Period.

If the Bucs are smart, they will take whichever quarterback Dirk Koetter favors most, because that will keep Dirk Koetter in Tampa.

  61. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

’87, I really don’t think YOU should talk about anyone’s lack of football knowledge.

  62. tval Says:

“Threw to lowe standing in a spot” why??? :)..Yeah lets have him throw to guys standing still, that will emulate the nfl game perfectly…roflmao!! Who does this?? that drill totally dismisses timing/anticipation as unimportant, in which jameis is clearly superior.. That is literally a 25 yr old outdated jr high qb workout..wow, dirks trying to gas people up like chip..they like the kid, and thats obvious, but they know better..the film doesnt lie

  63. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I bet if Carr had come out this year, he’d be the first pick.

  64. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @tval

Do you really think it will be any different with Winston today?

  65. tval Says:

@ i know why.. kelvin?? That the “all the high draft picks around him” you’re referring to? I know its not kenny shaw, devonta, or wilder..lol!! Just stop..kelvin wasnt even in 3 deep rotation that year until dent was kicked off the team..jameis piggybacked those guys at 19(says lamarcus jernigan and telvin) with very good defense to help, when ej couldnt as the ‘super clean choir boy’ at 22..

  66. Buccfan37 Says:

Wow, not as much anger about Mariota being in the mix as I expected. The mystery will deepen as the draft nears. I think it’s safe to say at this point that Bucs coaching have not made up their minds on the direction they will take to make the Bucs something other than the Yucs.

  67. Underdog Says:

When you have the #1 pick and are in control of the draft you don’t have to blow smoke

  68. tval Says:

It should, and if not ill say the exact same thing. That is a useless drill. dont get it whatsoever, unless its just gauging his arm and thats it..but thats still very misleading to compare to real-time..this is honesty coming from someone who has lived and breathed the position for 25 + years, and it feels like much more :)…i respect dirk, and his opinion, just dont get that specific drill

  69. grafikdetail Says:

he said MM did good doesn’t mean good enough for him to draft him over winston LOL also didn’t see the big smiles on the faces of L&L i bet they will be ear to ear at FSU today

  70. MM-ARMY Says:

Just pick a QB!!!! I prefer MM… I notice that some of the JW fans really have a hard time being honest with themselves and saying this guy -MM- is just as good as JW. I think the reason behind that is exposure….we live in FL so all we see and get hype on is FSU-UF players. I think it is the reason JBF is mostly pro-JW because its what he knows best. I respect your opinion but the MM-ARMY dont have to see it your way. This is where we differ…many of the JW fans have been downright nasty. It helps me understand why they would like a QB more with some questionable character issues.

I would just ask the JW ARMY to open their eyes a bit. MM is a very solid choice too.

  71. David Says:

MTM…do u have an original thought in your head or are u just a Merrill Hodge groupie? I’m not a Winstonite as I’d be happy with either qb but stop acting like u know what ur talking about. It’s old and irrelevant. He has shortened the throwing motion since no baseball….and the picks, wasn’t complaining about em the year before when he had EXPERIENCED wr’s around. And research Matt Ryan’s last year in college. But looking at Mariota how can you not be intrigued by his stats his athleticism and his overall winning percentage. I’m effin stoked we are (better) gonna get one of these guys.

  72. grafikdetail Says:

@MM-Army i’ve seen just as ignorant & nasty responses from the MM Army as the JW Army… like your little jab about “questionable character” LOL i think they’re both great kids & it will be fun to watch them in the NFL

    ———————————

That’s easy. That’s because its not true. MM is not as good as Winston. Just look at the mock drafts and all of the experts on TV. Not one is saying Mariota is just as good as Winston so why would you expect a JW supporter to make such an idiotic statement? Oh and you really need to go back and re-read the comments of MM supporters. MM supporters have been downright nasty as you would say. Have you seen the things they have said about a 20 year old kid they have never met? Get out here with that woe is me attitude as if MM supporters have been cordial and holy. Well they pretend/seem to be holy. How else can you explain all of their judgmental comments they constantly make about a kid they have never met. Holy rollers MM supporters are. lol

  79. MTM Says:

    @ David

Thanks for taking time away from your NFL scouting job to comment and who in the hell listens to Merrill Hodge!

  80. chris k Says:

@Tiny Tim, a mock draft is a prediction of what others think an NFL team will do, not a best player ranking system. Since all indications have been the Bucs will take Winston the mockers have all followed suit. They keep their job security if they can be as accurate as possible. Dominick said he would take Mariota, but if you asked him to do a mock draft he would pick Winston 1st as that is what they all are saying. Remember how many mock drafts actually had Mariota at the top when the college season ended? There were plenty and there haven’t been any games since. Now also, if we’re gonna say Gruden said he was almost put to sleep by Mariota we must also say the most important thing Gruden said. He said that Mariota is the only guy that he could not get under his skin or ratlled in the least bit. That says a lot about the guy no matter who wants to acknowledge that or not..

  81. I'm a great person Says:

Mock drafts that took place at seasons end has no bearing on the mock drafts that come out today. Why is that? Because tape evaluation/interviews/pro days etc have taken place. That’s why it is overwhelmly in Winston’s favor as oppose to the 50/50 you saw at the beginning of the process. The mocks are based off who is the best player at that position period based off need. For example, Suh was rated the best DT in the draft with McCoy second. Guess what happened? The first team that needed a DT was picking SUH period. Just like last year. Sammy Watkins was rated the #1 WR. Guess what happened. Watkins was the WR picked first. Winston is #1 in the mocks not because its rumored the bucs are leaning Winston. He is number one because he is the best. Don’t believe me, just look on the official buc site where they have at least 20 mock drafts and read the comments of why Winston is first. Most will speak on the fact that Winston is the best QB prospect period. The tape/interviews etc validated that no matter how much MM supporters disagree. Whether or not the bucs pick Winston is anybody’s guess. They may be scared of off the field issues. But as for the tape, it is obvious and in Kurt Warner’s words………He is far and away the best prospect.

  84. Kyle Says:

If Koetter really is on the Mariota band wagon, Bucs fans should be concerned if Winston is the pick. Do you really trust Lovie Smith and Licht to make this decision? Those two have a history of poor talent evaluation.

Say hello to your next Bucs QB.

  86. Biggun Says:

My prediction…. We trade first overall pick with SD at 17 overall and get Rivers and veteran O lineman in the trade. If we don’t we go with MM first overall…. gut feeling with Winston something about him does not sit well with me, and I don’t follow the off field stupid stuff he did….. it’s in his body language and his demeanor too cocky like Cam Newton yuk Cam makes me sick on the stomach after watching him and his 6 year old size ears…………….

  87. WestCoastBucFan Says:

I preferred MM over Winston, but was blown away by Hundley’s performance and demeanor at Gruden’s QB camp. He’s a sleeper and should be in the conversation. They should consider trading down and getting Hundley.

  88. buddha Says:

With what happened to Talib today and Mike Williams last year, the Buccaneers would be nuts to take a chance on Winston. His off field issues are just too massive for a number one pick.

  89. Ryan Says:

For those who are making much out of Mariota’s time with Gruden in the huddle just remember Mariota probably wont have near the depth of plays from this staff as Gruden….12 year vets have issues with Gruden’s play verbage

  90. Winston's Man Boobs Says:

It would be just like this stupid organization for a defensive minded Head Coach to overrule the QB his offensive coordinator wants and pick his own QB… Par for the course ….

    BUCS LIFE .
