Jameis Watch: Not Rigging The Draft
April 15th, 2015Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.
It was a startling moment of candor last week when David Cornwell, Jameis Winston’s lawyer, said at a sports law symposium that Winston was mature enough to handle football in the NFL but not the lifestyle. It was part of an overall premise of Cornwell’s that youngsters coming out of college are not prepared, in general.
Of course, the lightning clap folks heard was Cornwell’s comment about Winston.
It led some to believe Cornwell was deliberately trying to hijack the draft for the benefit of his client, which pickpocket-thwarting, Bucs-uniform-frowning, Allie-LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hating, pedestrian-bumping, olive oil-lapping, popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried-chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, circle-jerking, beer-chugging, cricket-watching, scone-loathing, college football-naïve, baseball-box-score-reading, NPR-listening, filthy-hotel-staying, fight-instigating, barista-training Peter King, of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports fame thinks is hogwash, so he wrote on his website, theMMQB.com.
WINSTON AND TAMPA. In regards to the comment about Jameis Winston—“He’s ready to be an NFL player on the field. But he’s not ready to be an NFL player off the field.”—so you think his agent is playing with the teams to get his client to a better team? It seems strange to say those things when your job is to sell your client. There must be a reason.
—Ray Ekness, Missoula, Mont.
David Cornwell is Winston’s criminal attorney. He is not his agent. I just think it was more a case of the attorney simply being frank and not believing he was saying anything really unusual. There’s no way he was trying to manipulate Winston to get picked by a team other than Tampa. Winston really wants to go to Tampa.
So Winston wants to play for the Bucs — this is not news — and based on last week’s event with the Alstott Family Foundation, the Bucs seem to want Winston to play for them.
The next 15 days is going to be a real drag.

Draft can’t get here quick enough!
April 15th, 2015 at 10:34 am
they are selling Jameis’s jersey on the Bucs website already.

Yahoo Sports –
“That’s a respectable score for quarterbacks, and just one point shy of the 28 Manning scored prior to the 1998 draft. It also stacks up favorably with several recent Super Bowl winners, including the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees (28), the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson (28), the Baltimore Ravens’ Joe Flacco (27) and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger (25). “

Terry Bradshaw scored a negative 17 on his Wonderlic. Beat that.

So, you are willing to believe the attorney in this case. But, when he says Kinsman lied, and Jameis did not rape her, you don’t believe him.
Way to cherry pick to make his statements fit your narrow viewpoint.

It shouldnt be a drag, it should be your last couple of weeks as a mediocre franchise. What more could be exciting in the sports world then to have a dynasty at arms reach? You are drafting lebron this time, enjoy..:)

Peter King looks like a nerd in that pic, why would a man do his hair in a perm?

“Either Mariota or the Bucs completely go in the tank this season AND next season to get Famous Jameis in 2015.”
“I said for the last 2 weeks. Jameis Winston is like LeBron James he does not need to play college ball. THAT’S right I said it!”

After so many articles about how brilliant Winston is we find out he only scored a 27 on his Wunderlick test out of a possible 50. That is just 15 points below what the Colts QB scored, who is a bright QB and took the Colts to the playoffs his first year with a team that had only gotten two wins the year before (like us last year). That is what a smart QB can do but that isn’t braggart Winston! We have a lot better chance with Mariota who scored 33 on the same test! Winston is about as smart and compares best to Byron Leftwich, with the same lumbering running style and long throwing motion. Throws interceptions like Byron too. No wonder the Chargers want to move up and trade off their Super QB just to get Mariota and the top evaluator of talent Mayock has Mariota ranked the top QB. The Bucs need to wise up before they throw character concerns out the window. After all Winston threw more interceptions at the last of last season and was on a downward spiral on the field as Mariota was showing improvement and winning every college QB honor given last year. Remember last year Joe was promoting Johnny Football. How did that turn out?
April 15th, 2015 at 11:08 am
Owlykat…and Manning’s was 28. So your point is?

Peyton Manning 28
Drew Brees 28
Russell Wilson 28
Jameis Winston 27
Joe Flacco 27
Big Ben 25
Yep, he’s a big dummy alright. So, are all those Super Bowl winners.
Also, Ryan Fitzpatrick got a 48. You might want to hold off for giving Mariota that MVP just yet…..
April 15th, 2015 at 11:11 am
Joe promoting Johnny Jackass has noting to do with this season and Jameis.
No mocks or analysts were even talking about Johnny to the Bucs…
Damn you guys reach soooo far when it comes to Joe, Johnny and Jameis.
This is a totally different set of circumstances…tell me again how many times did Manziel visit One Buc last off season?
Good lord just stop it already. I can’t help if you’re too blind to read the writing on the wall. Perhaps all caps will do it for you.
MARIOTA IS NOT GOING TO THE BUCS.
Is that better?
April 15th, 2015 at 11:14 am
Some people are better served to just stay over at PR and comment. Where the good guys are. This place can get nasty up in here….
April 15th, 2015 at 11:16 am
Damn I was leaning Mariota with his 33 and maturity until I just saw predictor of Pineapple McCown Owlycat say he prefers Mariota too. That might be a strong case for going Winston (if the Bucs can’t trade down or pass on Williams of course). 🙂
April 15th, 2015 at 11:16 am
Mariota 33
Manziel 32
I concede, if stats were all the front offices looked at Mariota would be picked first. But, it’s not Madden. There’s more than stat lines that go into evaluation. Or, me, you, and your neighbor could be a GM.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:19 am
Yea, I just scored a 47 on the Wunderlic….
Anyway, let’s look at a few facts (that aren’t based on any offensive system):
Mariota scored a 33, Winston scored a 27.
Mariota runs a 4.5 40, Winston runs a 4.9
Mariota’s fastball was 56mph, Winston’s was 55mph.
Mariota has a slim-to-zero chance of ever having to face disciplinary action in the NFL, Winston has a moderate chance (say 50-50).
Not including any stats that could be attributed to systems or teams (interceptions, completion %, QBR, Wins), I think it’s fair to say that Mariota is the superior talent & prospect.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:22 am
@Erik
You would be a great GM. All it takes is look at a spreadsheet and picking the top numbers. That’s all there is to professional football evaluation.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:23 am
Are we………………….still talking about Mariota?
Oh yah, it’s just Erik.
Save your money my man.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:32 am
Epic fails by both owlykat and erik the spreadsheeter.
For erik, minus the wonderlic, Vince Young is a HOFer.
For owl, minus the fact that he’s all sorts of bad, Ryan Fitzpatrick is a HOFer.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:36 am
I do think the Bucs want to trade down with Jacksonville and pick either Winston or Mariota because they are comfortable with both. This should be possible if Jacksonville really wants Leonard Williams and scared Tennessee might draft him.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:36 am
Mariota scored a 33, Kaepernick scored a 38.
Mariota runs a 4.5 40, Kaepernick runs a 4.53
Mariota’s fastball was 56mph, Kaepernick’s was 59mph.
See, numbers always tell the truth.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:42 am
@ Owlykat the average wonderlic show is a 20 so I’m perfectly content with a 27for a qb. Btw Manziel had a 35 on his wonderlic if I recall properly… how’d that turn out! It seems quarterback success/failure is only linked to the wonderlic if the score is lower than 20 or so (which btw is average). Even then you get someone like McNabb, Marino, or Bradshaw that scored around a 14 or 15 and turned out well.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:43 am
Both Winston and Mariota will be great qbs. However I shudder at the thought of how boring this team will be with the Lovie and Mariota combination. Crickets………………..
April 15th, 2015 at 11:48 am
I think this was all on the media for twisting the intent of his words. I never once thought the guy meant what the media was telling us.

Winston’s fastball is more like 95mph. Oh – you meant football.
April 15th, 2015 at 11:59 am
@ BFFL
Even though I’m not in the draft a QB this year crowd (I want to see how Glennon and Koetter work together plus I am big on Hackenberg next year) but that scenario with trading with the Jags would be sweet too if the Bucs get the right compensation.
April 15th, 2015 at 12:12 pm
It’s amazing how many facts & statistics you have to be able to ignore/deny in order to be a Winston supporter over Mariota. You guys are silly.
And I do actually have a new fondness of Jameis after watching him on Gruden’s QB camp.
April 15th, 2015 at 12:37 pm
@Erik
It’s not about ignore/deny. It’s saying that the people who get paid to draft players don’t pull up a spreadsheet and simply choose the guy with the best numbers.
If you were right, why wouldn’t the players who are best statistically at every position be drafted before all the others?
Is the guy with the most interceptions the “best” cornerback? Most rushing yards/fastest 40, the “best” runningback, etc.?
Measurables are not the end all be all of pro football analysis. It’s not Madden.

Not going anything that actually matters, sure.
Your name doesn’t seem appropriate because that was not a wise post.
April 15th, 2015 at 1:51 pm
Edgewalker,
I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.
L & WD,
I do actually like Winston pretty well now, but seriously, every single stat and measurable favors Mariota. And I think he passes the visual test as well as Winston. It almost takes blind faith to value Winston’s leadership or (sometimes poor) route anticipation over everything Mariota would bring to our team.
April 15th, 2015 at 2:05 pm
It would appear that front offices have that same blind faith argument regarding Mariota’s ability to transition to a pro-style offense – under center, calling plays, audibling, etc. (There’s clearly SOME reason it looks like Winston is the pick)
He may be able to transition easily. But, there’s no tape, and it’s simply guessing to know how well and when he can do it consistantly.
Part of the reason that FSU has high draft numbers is not just talent, it’s that they are being prepared to do what they will be asked to do in the NFL. There’s actual film showing it. Spread Option play may be increasing the NFL, but, right now, it’s not the standard, it’s still an anomaly.
April 15th, 2015 at 2:41 pm
Erik,
None of those things you listed really matter. They are almost meaningless and you threw out all the ones that matter: (interceptions, completion %, QBR, Wins),
So yeah, if you use only the stuff NOT on the field, Mariota seems like a treasure.
April 15th, 2015 at 4:09 pm
Who’s not on the field (due to suspensions), what? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot…Yes, being ON the field is a must. Yes?
April 15th, 2015 at 6:12 pm
Love and Warrick Dunn…don’t forget spread option with flash cards of pictures of a flower, Oprah Winfrey, a squirell, and rock.
April 15th, 2015 at 6:22 pm
Wait a minute 87…..you R brilliant. Who do you think will know the ins & outs of the spread scheme? Even if it’s a slight variation with Dirk’s design, we will have the added advantage over the defenses we face. Thanks Mariota!

U get a free beer and a reach around if u dress up as Jameis Winston at joe s draft party
April 15th, 2015 at 8:56 pm
Bird…are you going to be there?
If so bring the lotion for me okay…
April 16th, 2015 at 8:44 am
All I heard was circle-jerking and barista training. After that, I didn’t care. Jameis will be just fine
