First Round QBs Are Best Bet

How could any sane person want bratty Jay Cutler over Jameis Winston?

How could any sane person want bratty Jay Cutler over Jameis Winston?

Speechless last night, Joe didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Someone had Twittered Joe that the Bucs ought to trade down for bratty Jay Cutler.

Cutler, who was benched last year, is on the cusp of being drummed out of the league. And the Bucs are supposed to throw away a shot at a franchise quarterback for the next 10-15 years for a guy that might be out of football soon? (facepalm)

Oddly enough, it was former Bears general manager Phil Emery, who signed Cutler to an insane contract (which is why Emery is unemployed), who famously said that drafting a quarterback after the third round is a waste of a draft pick.

He is correct, based on the recent years. Yes, there is the accident of Tom Brady. Again, an accident. Any general manager banking on a sixth round pick to become a Hall of Famer is a general manager who is trying to get fired and work in TV.

Spreadsheeter Scott Kacsmar, of FootballOutsiders.com once documented how each NFL starter, before Josh Freeman came into the NFL, was acquired.

Just look at the quarterbacks who won playoff games the past two years and where they were drafted. First-round quarterbacks are not the gamble some would have you believe.

Well, comparing them two on-field-skills should enlight you Joe, that the certain FSU QB is not the way to go.
Both have the same lame decsion making and/or Football IQ and both have an strong arm..

I invite fans to watch some games by Winston (not much over 10 minutes vids per game) to see all the snaps and even the “average Joe” will be suprised what kind of weak average azz gets hyped up by the Media-Joe.

Poor decision making; Not good inside pocket (feels pressure too often too quick, since HE HAS TIME BUT MAKES RUSHED THROWES), and so on…

His “great” anticipation is nothing more, than being locked into a target (most of the time, like 85 percent at least at the time 😉 ) and the defender closes in, on a normaly good open pass, but wow, that is throwing into tight windows.. and while he may come away with it in college.. NFL defenders are a different kind of caliber..

so visit draftbreakdown.com and spend a little time with the “great” (hahahahaha couln´t hold myself back) FSU QB..

If the Winston-Commercials in the media wouldn´t be about lies, they would say: “c´mon, cheer for the brand new Freeman2.0 – now in in a darker tone – off-field and on field! But warning: Don´t use in front of younger women, because they might need psychological help afterwards.. + Reading too much about the brand new Act-Like-A-Grown-Man-Because-Its-Time-To-Get-Drafted-So-The-Past-TWO-Years-Aren´t-Meaningfull QB F-man2.0 may damage your brain”
for certaaain: No matter of personality – his on-field skills are sooo medicore, i mean: Matt Moore had better college tape (“throwing guys open”)

How about taking the guy, who gives you the possibilty to install a the superior scheme + has the all-mighty experience running it?
Even without the super-tempo-no-huddle, just by the concepts itself Oregons sheme is very very sound: safe and efficient approach

  3. Phil Says:

Can’t wait for Winston to get here. Anyone have a contact with the Bucs travel agent to see if they have booked a flight for Winston to fly to Tampa on Friday?

  4. louden Says:

make it: Moore had same level of tape in the NFL, like the FSU QB in college

  7. louden Says:

Besides Joe, there is another man thinking to know a thing or two about QB´s; it´s Jon MotherLovin´Gruden; here´s sth. from him:

“I don’t know anybody in this draft that can do for a football team what Mariota can do,” Gruden said. “He can read the field. That whole thing about Oregon being a no-huddle, dive-option team, that is just a narrative resulting from a lack of information. The Ducks run a lot of pro-style concepts. Mariota does a lot with the protections. I’ve seen him throw the ball with touch and timing in tight windows.” The former Bucs coach points out that Mariota is the same size as Jameis Winston but runs 4.52 forty. He is incredibly elusive, and man, is he a playmaker and a great competitor. I see him functioning in the pocket, out of the pocket, and if you want to run a zone-read, he’ll rip the defense apart.

“I don’t understand why [Mariota] isn’t the No. 1 player in this draft on Mel Kiper’s Big Board,” Gruden said..

Chucky, you´re welcome; there are more people who can´t understand a certain FSU QB being labeled as being better..

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

wasn’t the last 1st rounder for the Bucs to make it 10 years, was Derrick Brooks. and that draft happened 20 years ago.

You can look at all the playoff teams and count 1st round QB’s. But you will find more Good Gm’s that drafted well in the playoffs.

  9. Clodhopper Says:

Looks like you can get at least a decent QB undrafted. Lets do that!!
    *sarcasm

  10. Waterboy Says:

Tampa needs a veteran QB to guide whichever rookie QB they decide to draft but Cutler is not that guy. A lot of Bears fans wanted them to stick with McCown a year or so ago when Cutler returned from injury. That alone says it all.

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

This is what I’ve been trying to tell people. That quarterbacks can be found in all the rounds, but the round with the most success is the first round.

Simply put, it is the round where the odds are best for getting a true franchise quarterback.

When we take Winston, I hope 10-15 years is what we get, because if he comes here, I want him to have success. Just as I would want Mariota to have if he were drafted by the Bucs.

Unfortunately, there are not many here who would feel the same if their guy isn’t picked.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Waterboy

I agree. Hopefully a good veteran that plays a style like out draft pick will come available after the draft.

So far as Cutler, if we were to trade down, I would take him over Glennon. But I don’t want Cutler to come here. Not with the massive contract he has. Still, I doubt he’s “on his way out of the league.”

  13. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

We have to draft a quarterback, or attain a massive number of picks by trading down. It feels like the Buccaneers have been idle for ten years.

To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.

This is the same guy Winstonites were clinging to last week when he had Winston on his show. Turns out, Jon agrees with me. He thinks the Buccaneers will make a mistake when they take Winston.

    Come on. Let’s here it.

As for myself, if Mariota is not chosen I will take a moment to shake my head, but then I will realize we at least have a new QB and a chance to get better.

    Ah statistics.

This chart could be said to show the first round is the best place to find a quarterback.

It could also be said to show that you have as much chance to find a good quarterback outside the first round as you do in the first round.

    Take your pick.

  30. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

You know, a though just occurred to me. Just yesterday, Joe was expressing how he hates statistics. Now he’s using them to make a point.

And name one QB from Oregon’s offense that panned out in the NFL?

  32. Patrick in VA Says:

@Bonzai – I think that the lull between the draft and OTAs will give everyone a chance to settle in and get right minded about the situation. There will be some lingering grumblings from some, but once the team gets going I believe that most will just be on board and happy that we finally have a QB that we can look forward to growing in the position who has the talent level and the ceiling to get excited about. There will be others who are more interested in their opinions being right than they are about what the team is actually doing. It’s going to happen. Happens every year. And then there will be that group of fans who morally object to him being here. Hopefully they create their own site where they can go praise each other for how righteous they are and condemn Winston for the wrongs that they feel he’s committed against humanity.

At the end of the day, we’re all just trying to fill our day with something worth talking about while we’re waiting on football to get here. If another sport were worth my time I would gladly be talking about that rather than speculating about the draft, of all things, for months before it actually happens.

  33. drdneast Says:

I have no ability to evaluate NL QB material and neither does any other draft poser who posts out here.
What I do know is Winston is a much better QB coming out of college than Freeman ever was.
I also know that history says it takes three or four years to develop a QB coming out of a college spread system.
Those who came out and made a big spash are beginning to flat line as NFL DC’s have come up with schemes (mush Rush) to keep them contained in the pocket and force them to throw the ball.
Posers will see what their prejudiced eyes and minds what them to see.

  34. bucs4lyfe Says:

only reason our quarterback isn’t called a bust is because he’s a 3rd round pick….he plays like a 3rd round pick, sorry he has not lightning in a bottle effect Russell did, he’s not on that level we’ve tried every type of quarterback EXCEPT a high 1st round pick since testeverde so now it’s time to turn in the pick

Unfortunately, there have been plenty of posters here that have claimed that if Winston is the pick, they will no longer be a fan of the team and will follow someone else.

I have yet to hear that kind of dribble from Winston supporters if Mariota is the pick.

Because they’re 99.9% sure it’s Winston. If it somehow becomes Mariota I suspect we see that change. If nothing else those people will spend every post talking about what Jameis is doing, which is effectively the same thing.

HOW WILL YOU REACT IF YOUR PREFERRED QUARTERBACK IS NOT CHOSEN BY THE BUCCANEERS?

I’ve said it time and time again, but I’ll repeat it once more.

I’m not affiliated with FSU in any way; never went there, never really even had a reason to root for them. As a matter of fact, I’d probably say I’m more of a Ducks fan, for the simple fact that a few years ago, it appeared that there were plenty of former Ducks on our roster.

That being said, I’m a Bucs fan first and foremost. I root for other teams in the NFL based on how it will affect the outcome of the Bucs. I have no “other” favorite team in the NFL. Win/Lose/Draw, I’m a Bucs fan.

If they dont take Winston, will I be disappointed? Absolutely. I’ll probably sulk until the start of the 2nd round or until we make our next selection, whichever comes first. You know why? Cause I know at the end of they day, MY job isn’t on the line if the pick isn’t the right one.

I’ll be there, watching preseason and opening day from my couch on NFL Sunday ticket regardless. Naturally making it to the Falcons game and making an attempt to get to a game at Ray Jay and maybe even one in Carolina.

I’m not going anywhere. You all are stuck with me. LOL.

    Go Bucs

  38. Greg Says:

Very probable to happen. Bucs would get 7th overall pic to add a OT maybe also a third rounder. The new bears coach gets to dump salary for a qb he may not want. Lovie has been collecting players he is familiar with all off season. Bucs are not good enough to support a rookie qb. No offensive line, no running game, questionable defense. If bucs are pressured to win sooner than later they will need a veteran qb. John Fox is the guy who drafted Cam Newton who also had off field issues and had luck with him. By the way dont you think Chicago would love to make a splash when the draft is in Chicago?

  39. Jaybird99 Says:

Just to pick you up on your ending comment

“Just look at the quarterbacks who won playoff games the past two years and where they were drafted. First-round quarterbacks are not the gamble some would have you believe.”

More of the last two years 22 play off games were won by non first round picks (13).

  41. Greg Says:

  42. Patrick in VA Says:

@Greg – That’s a group of folks that have a pretty sterling career of evaluating QB talent

I think Winston is a rare talent.
But if the Bucs draft Mariota- I’ll spend 5 minutes shaking my Head.
Then I’ll order my Mariota Jersey- and hope that he becomes the QB we so desperately need.
    I’ll be supporting him 100%

I hope , like you,all true Buc fans do the same.
I believe either guy has the potential for greatness.

  45. Greg Says:

I don’t like Winston but I do see great potential in him. I just feel too many things have to magically fall in place for it to happen. I have a hard time believing that he will suddenly grow up. I have a hard time believing he will suddenly be focused on getting better as apposed to just liking being a QB and all its perks. Never seem a qb with this many signs of immaturity suddenly become a CEO type. Mariota already has that personality.

  46. Capt.Tim Says:

But Gruden has NO credibility when it comes to QBs. For those of you who have forgotten his years here- his inability to develop a rookie QB, or any Rookies, is what got his lil ass fired.

He wouldn’t know a good Rookie, if one kicked him in the ass

  47. Lou. Says:

I get bored with the recycled statistical analyses. It might be meaningful to break the qb picks into deciles. (That’s groups of ten for you Winston fans. Just kidding. Almost). You would see that the higher the choice the more room a player gets. Just think Stafford or Bradford. Really? OTOH any lower ranking player really has to shine or they are gone. Think Unitas, Romo, etc. etc. so of course the first rounders dominate the league starting rosters but the lowers ranking players dominate the Hall of Fame, especially on an opportunity adjusted basis.

    On another topic —

Personally, I would love to see Winston announce on draft night that he is setting up a fund for defense of college men wrongly accused of rape and to ask the NFL to pledge funds to such a just and worthy cause.

You can’t be serious with that statement.

how many times has it been posted:

    as per BSPN: Trent Dilfer

No, the moment happened at 1:12 a.m. PT on Tuesday — hours after the first practice at Pepperdine University. Winston fared fine in the opening drills, but realized that many of his competitors arrived here more prepared than him.

“I was lazy,” Winston said. “I didn’t prepare. I had the playbook for two weeks.”

The nation’s No. 2-rated QB and 15th-best prospect overall out of Hueytown, Ala., Winston had an excuse: He’s been playing baseball all summer. A premier two-sport athlete, he wants to play both in college and rates as an elite prospect for the professional baseball draft next June.

“If I’m going to find a way to balance it in college,” Winston said, “I’ve got to get it done in a situation like this.”

By midweek in Malibu, Winston had emerged as one of the most notable quarterbacks in camp, with his undeniable skills, competitiveness and a buoyant personality.
The staff ranked him as the No. 1 performer through Thursday. The Elite 11 MVP, given to the top QB, is handed out on Friday.

But back to that game-changing first night. Winston sat on his bed, exhausted, and studied the playbook. When Trent Dilfer, the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback who serves as head coach to Elite 11 participants, made a second round of bed checks, he found Winston engulfed in the pages.

Dilfer made a note of the time: 1:12 a.m.

“He manned up,” Dilfer said. “The next day, his eyes were bleeding he was so tired. But he was killing it. He didn’t have to say anything, but his actions told me, ‘Let me show you I’m not just a gifted athlete. I’m a surgeon.’

“I think the kid’s the real deal. I didn’t know ratings going into this. I could care less about the perception. To me, they were all high school quarterbacks. I don’t care how famous they are. He’s earned my respect. If I’m a college coach, I want that guy.”

  49. Connor Says:

Criticize Gruden all you want Capt. Tim, but bottom line is, we’ve been the laughingstock of the NFL since he was fired. 6 years and continuing. Hopefully that ends this year finally.
