Casserly: Lovie Needs To Be “A Disciplinarian”

Former Redskins and Texans general manager Charley Casserly, who passed on quarterback Vince Young with the No. 1 overall pick under much scrutiny and pressure, has advice for Lovie Smith if he’s going to draft Jameis Winston.

Casserly, via NFL Network, says Lovie better be prepared to be firm and stern out of the gate.

“Your head coach, he’s got to be a disciplinarian that holds the players accountable. Bill Parcells told me, ‘When they come in that first door as a rookie, you got to lay the law down. It’s like a teacher disciplining a class on Day 1. You get’em right there and then you won’t have problems,'” Casserly said on NFL Network.

Casserly went on to say it’s critical to get Winston a veteran quarterback to learn from in all phases of the game and preparation.

Joe’s not sure Lovie would take a tough-guy, lay-the-law-down approach with Winston. That doesn’t seem to be the Lovie way. However, Joe thinks that’s more Dirk Koetter’s style, and guys like Logan Mankins and Gerald McCoy could help in that department.

As for the veteran QB, Joe remains convinced there will be one signed for training camp. There’s no logical reason not to. Joe has suggested Lovie’s old pal Jason Campbell, who has more wins and more experience mentoring than Josh McCown, could be that guy.

PFT is reporting that Campbell is on the cusp of hanging the cleats up. I wonder if bringing Mike Vick in would be worth considering. If there is anyone who understands the need to move past your past transgressions and straighten your life out in order to succeed in the league, it would be him.

    @ Joes,
No article on Jaworski saying Mariota is the pick? Wow, u guys are going into full denial mode now like most Winston supporters, I guess….. I’m sure you’ll just include his report in the ‘silly season’, but he has pretty credible sources.

I’ll post it for u, and then u can spin it like I’m sure you’ll do…. SMH.

    On Mariota, Jaworski says:
“The latest I’m hearing now from my sources around the league, who are pretty wired in, is that he’s going to go number one now to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” said Jaworski.

“Mariota’s stock, remember it was quiet for a while? And there’s a reason for that. There’s a lull every year until about 30 days before the draft. Now the coaches get involved. Prior to that, it’s the scouts, it’s the roadies that are filling out the paper work. Now the coaches get involved. Now team owners get involved. Now general managers get involved. So you’re starting to see, in my opinion, Winston’s stock starting to slide a little bit and Mariota’s stock starting to go up a little bit.”

  3. Patrick in VA Says:

@Erik – Jaworski has proven himself to be a guy that says things just to get people talking about his takes. Not the most reputable guy out there.

  4. pick6 Says:

not sure lovie can be. and that’s okay, i guess. but when you’re that way, you need a guy who can balance that out in the coordinator role. dungy could be dungy because kiffin was there. the one year we had accountability on offense under TD was with former marine les steckel calling the shots IIRC. Teddy bear head coaches must have some drill sergeants among their assistants. Lovie can still be lovie if Frazier and Koetter tighten the grip on both units

  5. tmaxcon Says:

Jaws is also Philly guy…. do the math the only two people starting the stir and giving the mariota false hope is Mike Mayock who has repeatedly embarrassed himself with his anti winston agenda. he has made himself look like a fool several times on nfl network mainly during the combine broadcast. and jaws who is a philly guy with close ties to the organization. get used to winston in tampa. he will do the city proud…

except in the case of the bucs, where ownership, coaches, PIs, and the local and national media have been involved since the tuesday after we clinched the #1 overall pick, if not before. the people who haven’t looked at winston closely yet are the people who will have no chance to draft him, so what they think matters little and there’s a reason they didn’t bother to take a closer look until now – it’s because all their real work is wrapping up and they have time to evaluate long shots (like us with dante fowler)

  7. ufcguy Says:

And when winston gets picked what will u say then. Boy wonder mariota has no desire to be here. U can see it all over his face and his demeanor. I think hes gonna be a huge project. Winston will haunt this team forever if we don’t pick him

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Jaws referenced what he is hearing from his sources. Who might those imaginary voices in his head be?

  9. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

The last coach here who tried to “lay down the law” and be a disciplinarian to players was ran out of town for not knowing how to treat grown men (according to the haters anyway). Lovie is a savvy cat when it comes to not rocking the boat too bad…I think what he really learned in his basement was how to deflect blame and say the things owners and fans want to hear (even if it’s not always the reality of things)

  10. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

OK, Lovie. Repeat after me: Toes on the line!

  11. Buc1987 Says:

Erik the Genuis….cites Jaworski as the r4eason we’re in denial.

Yet when I cited numerous talking heads saying we’re taking Winston, all that was meaningless to the genius..

    Do you remember that Erik?

    “Mocks mean nothing”

    “Analysts don’t really know”

I guess the same doesn’t apply to the great Ron Jaworski does it?

Would you like me to post 40-50 other people on the same level as Jaworski that are saying the pick is Winston?

    SMH Erik….get a grip.

“Lovie better be prepared to be firm and stern out of the gate.”

lol right because that worked so extremely well for greg schiano hahaha casserly hasn’t been an NFL GM since like 2006. yea because pete carroll, jeff fisher or marvin lewis seem so very stern. guess he should go all Adrian Peterson on Winston, yep change your philosophy for one guy that’ll work. if you have a strong locker room and the right culture Winston will be just fine.

goodell is an idiot for pushing back the draft, theres nothing to talk about anymore you can only debate the same thing so much, these guys need to be in camp evaluating and seeing these players up close in an nfl camp so they can come up with new material

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

I am getting dizzy watching this franchise run in circles!

  14. LargoBuc Says:

Lovie does hold players accountable. Just not in the way Schiano would. Lovie dosent have to scream and get in players’ face to get his point across. That says alot about the kind of man Lovie is compared to Greg “short man syndrome” Schiano.
Lovies interpersonal skills and ability to relate with his players mixed with his wealth of NFL experience are why I am willing to give Lovie a chance after his 2-14 season as opposed to Greg Schiano and his 4-12 season. It helps alot when your not hated by half of your locker room.
Of course Lovie has his critics on this site, and I can definitely understand why. I just beleive Lovie will succeed if given a chance.

He won’t have to be if he chooses Mariota!

  16. VCE Says:

If you need a backup quarterback…. Give Vince Young a chance.. He wouldn’t cost you a lot of money…. He can still play at a HIGH level,…. His NFL career record is 31-19… He’s a 2 time Pro-Bowler with playoff experience…
The NFL is all about “WINS and LOSSES”…. and Vince can WIN…….
He was voted 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year…..
I think he still has something left…

  17. VCE Says:

Casserly is still trying to justify his 2006 draft pick…
Mario Williams was a good pick but Vince Young was a game changer. Had the Texans took Vince Young in 2006, they would already have a super bowl win maybe two…
But it is hard to win when you go to a team were the coach don’t want you. Despite that Vince career record in Tennessee was 30 and 17…
