Bucs Work With Three FSU O-Linemen
April 8th, 2015The Tampa Bay Buccaneers contingent in Tallahassee this morning for a private workout with Jameis Winston also is keeping busy with the guys who have protected Winston.
(No, that isn’t a Tallahassee Police Department joke.)
Lovie Smith, Dirk Koetter, Jason Licht and friends took a close look at guards Tré Jackson and Josue Matias, as well as center and Mr. Everything on the offensive line, Cam Erving, per beat writer Dustin Tackett.
Erving is projected to be a late-first-round, early-second-round pick. Jackson could be there for the Bucs with their first pick of the third round, and Matias would come after that. All three were invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in February.
Cue the nervous nellies who think Winston was only good because he had a great O-line and played in the ACC.

Keep in mind, Cam came to FSU as a DT, and only has been OL for the last three seasons. Also, Trickett crosstrains his OL, so, he’s never been able to focus on just one position. There’s room for improvement.
April 8th, 2015 at 11:48 am
I think that they are more interested in the Linemen than they are Jameis
Tre Jackson in particular
Hopefully he can last until the BUCS third round pick

After drafting Jameis, go for FSU talent. The team has a big share of talent and the Bucs can’t go wrong choosing from that talent. Not an FSU fan here, but this is past that level.
April 8th, 2015 at 11:59 am
God knows the Bucs could sure use some new blood and real talent along the O-line! I’m starting to get worried that so little has been done address this glaring need as yet!
April 8th, 2015 at 11:59 am
Stop the debate about which linemen to take – just take them all!
April 8th, 2015 at 12:01 pm
If we can manage to snag a lineman or 2 (preferable the LT) that would definitely aid in the comfort level of JW and his transition.
would be nice to grab a WR as well, but that is probably just wishful thinking.
not an FSU fan, so i’m not sure if any of their WR also handle PR/KR.
April 8th, 2015 at 12:14 pm
How about a couple OL linemen FSU to back up rivers and we get Peterson r/b and some draft picks to help out along the way this year and next, But the Buc’s will have to trade down in the Draft to do this , I like it !!!!!!!

Who attended jw’s workout vs who attended mm’s workout? Hmmm. Wonder what that means.
April 8th, 2015 at 12:42 pm
They worked out OL in Oregon as well.
Though he took a few shotgun snaps near the end of the sequence, Mariota mostly lined up under center, with fellow draft prospect Hroniss Grasu delivering the ball.

Same Bucs group at each workout.

@Dreambig…
not sure if that was sarcasm or not, but per ProFootballTalk:
April 8th, 2015 at 12:46 pm
5 people flew out to Oregon Dreambig. Not sure what that has to do with anything really.
“Five Buccaneer officials made the 2,500-mile trip from Tampa to Eugene, Oregon on Tuesday morning in order to put Mariota – a potential target for the first-overall draft pick the team will exercise on April 30 – through the paces. With Head Coach Lovie Smith, General Manager Jason Licht and Director of Player Personnel Jon Robinson looking on, Offensive Coordinator Dirk Koetter and Quarterbacks Coach Mike Bajakian directed a fast-paced, 45-throw session that allowed the former Oregon quarterback to show off his arm strength and footwork.” -Bucs

And the workout is over. Maybe 25 throws. Jameis laughed when told that was it. Everyone appears to be pleased.
Kind sounds like the last step…….

So far the same group is in Tallahassee.
April 8th, 2015 at 12:49 pm
Also there working out was FSU’s all-time leading receiver Rashad Greene and tight end Nick O’Leary. WR Scooter Haggins was also there.
April 8th, 2015 at 12:53 pm
@Skyline,
do any of those receivers (sans O’Leary, obviously) handle Punt/Kick returns?
it’d be nice if they were able to grab a WR that we could use as a 3WR in the later rounds, but if he can’t handle returns, i might consider it a “wasted” pick…even though the continuity would be good for JW.
April 8th, 2015 at 12:56 pm
I don’t know who Haggins is or what he did at FSU. I really only know Greene.
After looking up Haggins looks like he as a QB in college and moved to WR at FSU.
The following is his info. Probably won’t be drafted, but might in the 7th.
2014: Fifth-year senior who served as an emotional leader for the Seminoles after returning in 2014 from a knee injury that sideline him for the whole 2013 season…served as a game captain for all 14 games…a backup receiver, he had one catch for 18 yards against Wake Forest…contributor on special teams…finished career with 21 receptions for 224 yards over 41 games.
2013: Redshirted after suffering preseason knee injury… is expected to provide a veteran presence in the slot in 2014…has 20 career catches for 206 yards in 27 career games.
2012: Played in 13 games as a junior…caught eight passes for a career-high 108 yards…posted a 13.5 yards per reception average which is fourth overall on the team…had an impressive game to open the season against Murray State by catching three passes for 34 yards…his career-long 42-yard catch on 3rd-and-10 in the first quarter against Boston College helped extend a drive and led to a touchdown.
2011: Came into the season with just one catch and was on his way to making a huge impact before breaking his right hand versus Oklahoma…finished the season with 11 catches for 94 yards, averaging 8.5 yards per catch in seven games played…had a team-best four catches for 45 yards against Oklahoma…made a miraculous comeback playing at Duke missing just two games after sustaining his hand injury…in his first career start against ULM, hauled in five catches for 28 yards from his slot position.
2010: Played in seven games mostly on special teams…played a few snaps on offense and recorded his first career catch on a 4-yard grab against Samford.

@Celly
Greene handled PR duties at FSU. O’Leary is a Tight End.
April 8th, 2015 at 1:08 pm
Cam would be a great pick with our 2nd rounder
April 8th, 2015 at 1:56 pm
HAHAHA! Waste of a topic. L and L want the real deal mariota.
April 8th, 2015 at 2:04 pm
When FSU moved Cam to center this year it made a huge improvement to their offensive line. He is strong and can play all the OL positions.
April 8th, 2015 at 2:21 pm
Interesting that Erving is projected as a 1st rounder considering he really only has 2 seasons an O-linemen…ever
April 8th, 2015 at 3:21 pm
Rashad is very dependable punt returner..smallish for kick return

Actually, 3 seasons. He switched to OL before the start of the 2012 season. But, your point is still valid.
April 8th, 2015 at 3:22 pm
Matias and Hart are awful
April 8th, 2015 at 4:24 pm
It seems to me an easy choice…. dem boys dat have played in the great state of Florida are more adept to our weather’s unique brutal “late fall properties. Look at sapp, brooks, dunn and many other Florida college drafts. They did REALLY good for us because they were conditioned to the environment from the start. My point is yes………. go get that FL STATE OLine when possible. It’s a word I learned back in Cincinasty, OH when I lived there 10 years ago temporarily…..Synergy
April 8th, 2015 at 5:11 pm
I saw that he was a d-lineman, but switched. Ok, so 3 years still doesn’t seem like a lot of time. Would seem more like a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
April 9th, 2015 at 1:49 am
The Bucs would get a serious talent infusion if they went all out for FSU players in the 2015 draft. They would have to do some moving up though.
1st Round – #1 Jameis Winston – QB
1st Round – #31 Cameron Erving T/C/G – trade 2nd round pick #34 and a 5th round pick with Seattle to move up 3 spots and nab Erving before NE gets their hands on him.
3rd round – #65 Tre Jackson – G
3rd round – #90 Rashad Greene – WR/PR – trade 4th round pick #98 and a 5th round pick to move up 8 spots and get Greene.
6th round – BPA
7th round – BPA
6 picks – 4 starters = Major and instant offensive improvement
I’m sure Gator fan would hate the idea – but they would love the results.
