Bucs Trade Dashon Goldson

April 3rd, 2015
Bucs safety Dashon "Hawk" Goldson was traded to the Redskins today.

Bucs safety Dashon “Hawk” Goldson was traded to the Redskins today.

Hawk Goldson has flown away.

The Bucs’ hard-hitting, flag-drawing safety was traded this morning to the Redskins along with a seventh round pick to the Redskins. In return, the Bucs got a sixth round draft pick in 2016.

NFL.com has the details.

Per Albert Breer, the deal cost the Redskins a sixth-round pick [in 2016]. Tampa Bay included a seventh-round pick along with Goldson in the deal. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport adds the trade saves the Bucs $4 million in salary-cap space, per a team source.

Joe’s hunch is that perhaps the Bucs have now begun to stockpile some picks in order to trade up this year, either from the second round to the first round, or to help acquire another fourth-round pick. They lost one trading for Logan Mankins, but got one back for Mark Barron.

Next up, Mike Glennon?

Wow! Good on Licht for getting something for him instead of just letting him walk away.

  2. Jolly Bucs fan Says:

Agreed Patrick, i was thinking he was just gonna be cut, and now we upgrading our 7th rd pick into a 6th rd pick, sweet deal

  3. Waterboy Says:

Goldson and a 7th round pick for a 6th round pick? Lots of voids to fill on that team this year. May be getting another #1 draft pick next season.

  4. BucsDan Says:

Apparently, both picks are in next year’s draft.

Got to find something to be negative about, right….

    smh.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

Wow is right. I never thought anyone would be willing to take on his salary based on what Goldson has put on tape the last 2 years. Can’t wait to hear the details. If we got a coke and a bag of chips for him – we done good.

Do we get back the full $8M that he would have counted against the salary cap this year? If so – what are we gonna do with it? We are still way under the cap with no big names left to spend on.

  7. Skyline Crew Says:

    Hey Joe,

I got your next Winston article. Mariota and Winston are still working out with Flaherty to improve. They’ll be working out with him until the draft. Want to make sure you meet your quota of 4-5 Winston articles a day.

  8. Raysaneers Says:

Good Riddance Mr. Hawk. The only thing you stole since you been here was your salary.

  9. iamkingsu Says:

We got to trade dashon plus a 7th just to get 6th next year.. We will always have the worst front office in football no matter who is negotiating smh

  10. Skyline Crew Says:

No we still are paying part of his salary.

  11. robert 9 Says:

best of luck to him. damn shame the nfl turned into flag football. loved the hits he could no longer deliver.

glennon aint going nowhere except behind center

  12. cnvertbleweathr Says:

Great move by the Bucs, not so much by the Skins! Goldson would account for about $8m in a cap hit in both 2016 and 2017. Bucs paying half his salary this year, but works out incredibly well having him off their books in the long run.

The stink of Dominick continues to wash away…

  13. Patrick in VA Says:

@BucsDan – Again, I’ll take anything over just letting him walk out the door for nothing

  14. JBucs1016 Says:

thought the 6th round pick was for next year Joe?

  15. cnvertbleweathr Says:

Who cares when and what the picks are… this is a financial move the Bucs were lucky to make.

  16. Pickgrin Says:

So we still have to eat $4M against the cap this year. Boy the dead $ is really piling up this year. Still – getting ANYTHING for this overpriced pro-bowler wanna-be is quite impressive. Good job Licht. I figured for sure we were just going to cut him. More addition by subtraction here. That’s pretty sad we have to keep saying that.

    Thanks Dom!!!

  17. Skyline Crew Says:

Mike Glennon? Really Joe? He is the only QB on the roster. If we trade him it has to be for another QB. Unless we plan to draft 2 QBs in the draft.

  18. mac Says:

Another Mark Dominik mistake has been corrected…

I’m so glad this dip spit is on ESPN now…

  19. bucrightoff Says:

Actually this is somewhat terrible news. It means Chris Conte is likely to see significant action this year, and considering hes even worse than Goldson, getting a pick is nice (even if it’s meaningless), but Conte is really bad. Him on the field is a big downgrade from Goldson. Conte is Sabby part 2. Gotta draft a safety this year, maybe even in the first 3 rounds.

  20. pick6 Says:

2016 pick. we are the only team that trades for late round picks 2 drafts away. did the same in the zuttah deal. couldn’t we have cut him for free instead of paying 3.5 mil to move from 200-something to 190-something a year from now? it’s not my money, but what is the point of showing the league over and over again that you’re willing to make watered down trades?

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

A 6th isn’t much trade ammo for moving up but better than nothing.

The only way we should move up is for a potential franchise LT or DE; but I’m not sure they exist in this draft. Most every OT projects as a RT and the ones projected as LTs need work.

    My plan would be
    1) If we have guy graded as a franchise LT then move up if reasonable cost to get him
    2) If no such guy available; try to trade back; and go after 2 interior O-lineman and a DE with next picks. One could be an immediate starting RG and the other either a LG/C for depth and eventual replacement of Mankins.

Pamphile is our developmental RT and Dotson is our RT; so I don’t see the value in adding a RT geared OT (which most of these draft prospects are).

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

Goldson to the Skins, a latter day perpetual floundering crappy team. You’ve reached the end of the line Dashon, next stop is hang it up.

  23. iamkingsu Says:

You don’t wait a year for a pick in a draft just to move up 1 round folks!! Othe GM’s look at how you negotiate. This is not setting a god example for future trades!

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

iamkingsu – we were going to get nothing for him and cut him so it’s a good trade. THese type of minor round draft pick trades happen all the time.

Miami only got a 4th rounder for Brandon Marshall and he was in his prime. What did you expect?

  25. bucs4lyfe Says:

they did the same thing for zuttah, his trade pick comes up this year

  26. iamkingsu Says:

    @pick 6

You beat me to it but spot on

  27. JFat Says:

I’ll take it, he had the worst contract still remaining on this team IMO. This should be a high 6th rounder since the Skins will likely suck again next season. Kinda bad when the only thing you’ll really miss about a player are his radio shows.

  28. bucs4lyfe Says:

based on his career in tampa he wasn’t even worth a 6th round pikc which is probably why we had to wait until next year for compensation

  29. ChanEpic Says:

We pay half of his salary next year. We get a 6th round pick but send a 7th to the Redskins and Bucs fans are good with this? I agree it’s better than letting him walk but I don’t like paying the guy AND giving up a pick. They had better use that pick we got for a MONSTER deal on or before draft day or I think we’ve gotten, well not fleeced, but the worst part of this deal.

  30. Eric Says:

Glennon and muscle hamster are next.

  31. SSG Mike Says:

Dumb. I got that we gave away a Seventh round this year for a Sixth NEXT year and still must pay a portion of his salary. Is that right? Sounds pretty stupid seeing that we could have a new coach and GM next season if they don’t show some real improvement THIS year. We definitely miss the days of McKay (smart moves) or Allen (gutsy moves) as GM’s. We are not even getting Sizzle this year let alone any Steak. Looks like bad Meat Loaf. Hoping for some blockbusters on draft day.

  32. ChanEpic Says:

@ Eric – Licht will trade them both and a 3rd round pick to Cleveland for Johnny Football.

  33. Dick2111 Says:

Looks to me like Lovie and Licht are rebuilding the team to play a very specific defense. We’d all better hope that it works, that our Bucs improve steadily as a result, and oh ya, that Lovie keeps his job as head coach.

If it doesn’t work, we could very well end up in another 3-5 year rebuilding process under yet another new head coach.

  34. ChanEpic Says:

@ SSG – Exactly. I don’t know if this really is addition by subtraction and Redskins fans are rejoicing because they KNOW they won this deal. So after years of being New Englands trade partner bitch, we can add the Redskins to the list of our transaction superiors.

  35. WS99 Says:

wow Chris conte and major wright. Marty ice, brees and Derek Anderson are rolling on the floor right now.

And the pressure mounts on winston. Just win baby.

  36. iamkingsu Says:

    @lord cornelius

You’re missing my point. You just cut bait with players instead because you lose all bargaining power in future negotians when you do watered down deals like this. Bill bellicheat saw the zuttah trade that’s how he was able to get a 4th and TIM WRIGHT!

Its sharks in other front offices and we’re looked upon as their prey. This NFL is a business first

  37. CalBucsFan Says:

Trading the Hawk and a 7th round pick for a 6th round pick & saving about $4M in cap space, okay…….now what? Appears to only have created more dumpster diving cap space room as teams continue to make cuts, because what’s left in the free-agent pool is certainly not much better. I know, probably getting ready to sign another RB……Ugggghhh!!! How about some OL help!

Sure want to believe there’s a smart strategy going on in the front office, but geez……the Bucs record & history speaks for itself.

Come on Bucs, it will take more than Winston to climb out of the abyss!!!

  38. WS99 Says:

I’m assuming the Cowboys have a back up safety we plan to sign???

  39. Celly Says:

You guys literally will find anything to complain about.

When he was on the team, it was nothing but, “oh my God, why hasn’t he been cut yet.”

Now that we managed to get something, ANYTHING, for him, you complain, “oh my God, that’s the best pick they could get”?

Your lives must really be miserable if you truly have to find negativity in everything that is done.

  40. JFat Says:

SSG Mike – Both picks involved are in 2016. We would have had the same cap hit this year if Goldson were cut vs being traded. This gets him off the books for next season, gives a bit more cap space this year and upgrades a pick. Not sure how that is dumb if they didn’t plan on keeping him.

  41. Architek Says:

Most 6th or 7th rounders don’t make the team anyway so good pick!

  42. cnvertbleweathr Says:

This trade saves the Bucs almost $20 M in cap space, you dummies. The picks are secondary to the amount of money guaranteed to Goldson over this year and the next two years.

  43. iamkingsu Says:

    @celly

What’s the point of getting a 6tg next year if you’re giving up a 7th next year. Just cut the player and move on

  44. Patrick in VA Says:

There are fans of the team and then there are people who use the fact that the team has been bad for a while as an excuse to use them as a punching bag so they have an outlet for whatever has gotten them to this sad state in life. That’s presenting itself in this comments section. I’ve got no problem with it so long as you beat up on the team instead of your wife and kids.

  45. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

How about this another example of lovie not adjusting his game to match with the times the cover 2 was a great defense 15 years ago but offenses adapt and change to take advantage of the weakness of said defense, however we are stuck with out dated lovie and his crappy scheme……poor jameis gonna be a long year, CHRIS CONTE and MAJOR WRIGHT…..hahahhahahahhah

  46. T in Orlando Says:

For those criticizing the team for still paying part of his salary this year, this was the portion of his salary that was guaranteed. If the Bucs would have cut him, they still would have owed that portion of the salary.

The only difference to the Bucs between cutting him and this trade was the upgrade of a 7th round pick for a 6th round pick in 2016. That 3.5 – 4 mil in salary was going to be paid by the Bucs no matter what.

So while they didn’t get much back, it’s more than they would have received if they cut him.

  47. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Round of applause for Jason Licht.

Don’t get me wrong Dashon Goldson’s a real good brotha-and I wish him nothing but the best. But for one reason or another things didn’t workout. Turning the page… we now- have extra cap space for a blockbuster trade.

    Adrian Peterson anyone?

  48. Lord Cornelius Says:

So iamkingsu – you think we would look better to cut Goldson and take the same financial hit? Versus getting a draft pick upgrade?

Please explain this to me someone. If there is some sort of financial advantage to cutting him over this trade then I understand the argument. Otherwise I don’t get it.

The Zuttah deal was bad. I don’t mind this one on the surface if the financial ramifications of cutting him are the same as trading him

  49. Lord Cornelius Says:

T in Orlando – that is my interpretation as well.

    Option A: Upgrade 7th round to 6th
Option B: keep that 7th rounder

It seems like we went with Option A. If the financials in both situations are the same how can anyone complain about that?

  50. Waterboy Says:

Gave away the #1 pick in the 7th round this year for an unknown 6th round pick next year smh. So I’m assuming Conte is an upgrade at the position?

  51. bucrightoff Says:

Trading for AP means two premium picks at least. For the least valuable position in football. What a disaster that would be. Minnesota holds all the cards, they have the hammer and AP will play ball or he can retire. Besides Dallas has the space too and the owner to do it. Bucs will likely be outbid unless they wanna overpay (which would be a total debacle)

  52. Lord Cornelius Says:

Also how the hell is cutting a player instead of getting compensation show that you do a watered down deal?

Cutting the player for nothing would be watered down stupidiy if there was an option to get a draft pick instead.

    The logic here is astounding

Why just cut a player and move on and get nothing when you can trade said player and upgrade a draft pick as well?

If you’re getting rid of him anyway, might as well get something, ANYTHING, for him.

  54. ATrain Says:

Joe. Please don’t yell me you are deleting posts on this site..This isn’t TBO is it?

The Bucs have traded away and not filled the prime spots O line..

Same year as last year Sorry Bucs…

  55. canadianbucsfan Says:

I’m sorry but I don’t not see this as a good move. I know he has not performed to expectations or to his salary but we have the money to keep him for another year. By doing this they are pretty much anointing injury prone Conte as the starter. I feel they should have had an open competition in training camp. Im sure Conte would have won cause Lovie can play favorites sometimes but Hawk would have been solid depth

Oh, ok, i get it now. You just didn’t actually find out what the picks were…

So, now that you know they’re both for 2016, what’s your argument?

  57. Icantstanditanymore Says:

    1) Getting a 6th in 2016 for a 7th in 2016 sounds good, but it is only in 2016 and not much trade bait for this year.
    2) PFT reports that the Bucs will be paying the guaranteed $4 Million he is due this year. Not only are we adding to dead money for this year, we are effectively PAYING Washington to take him!

  58. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @bucrightoff

I would be shocked if Minnesota get more than a 4th round picks for him

Ref: Marshall Faulk & Jerome Bettis

  59. Jeagan1999 Says:

At least we got a little something for him.

  60. bucs4lyfe Says:

astounding how idiotic bucs fans are…..you all knew the talk of them trading him and not giving him the ridiculous salary he was making. damn couch fans sitting on the sideline questioning everything their team does as if they know better. you don’t get high draft picks for a player just because his name is dashon goldson I don’t know if you know this but it doesn’t work that way.

every team in the nfl knows about this player and thought he was a product of the system he played in which turned out to be true since he came to tampa and did absolutely nothing. we’re trying to get picks for what he did in tampa not for the 49ers. dude didn’t even hit hard he was simply not a good signing in the first place, with the salary he gets we were lucky to get a 6th next year

  61. WS99 Says:

21 mil in dead money this year. 21 mil seems like a lot to pay for air. I often wonder why we cut mccown rather than trading him. A 6th round pick for mccown would have been a win.

  62. Celly Says:

    @Bucs4lyfe…..

but, but, but… In Madden, i could trade him for a 2nd round pick and 2 offensive linemen.

  63. ATrain Says:

Who will take his spot…Don’t dump a player and have no one to fill the spot..R we going to draft all new players.

R we going back to cheap young players Raheem style…

    That didn’t work…

    Retract

-Bettis was traded from the Los Angeles Rams to the Pittsburgh Steelers in April 1996 for a 1996 second-round pick and 1997 fourth-round pick. The Steelers also received a 1996 third-round pick.

-Faulk for second- and fifth-round picks

-Oakland Raiders Trade Randy Moss to New England Patriots, 2007
    fourth-round pick.

  66. Skyline Crew Says:

    ATrain,

We will have to draft one. We don’t have anybody to replace him. Unless we get something in June as well.

  67. Patrick in VA Says:

@ATrain – So, Conte gets hurt a lot and can’t stay on the field. Got it. Can you give me a percentage of the plays that Goldson was on the field vs. the time he was here? Yeah, Conte probably isn’t going to be out there a lot, but he’s on a cheap one year contract that will allow the team to bring in a lot more mid level talent so we can have a serviceable backup to fill in when Conte is out and possibly have a young guy in the wings that they’re grooming. Goldson was injured as well and he also had a bunch of penalties against the team and missed games for making illegal hits. Plus, he drops interceptions that hit him in the hands. Sure, we don’t have Ed Reed in his prime coming in, but there isn’t a better answer than the approach we took.

  68. bucs4lyfe Says:

the one and only bone I will throw to Dominick and his staff is they left the bucs salary cap in good standing, all this dead money is showing all the horrible moves by lovie and schiano over the last few years. even vjacks income is off the charts but you have to pay him because theres no one to replace him with…can’t be this bad of a team paying players these types of contracts

As I’ve already said, the Vikings are not obligated to trade him. They are not trading arguably their biggest asset for the sake of doing so. If someone offers appropriate value (which is a minimum of two premium picks), they will trade him. If not, they’ll say “Show up and get paid here, or retire and get nothing”. Strangely at that point he’s cool with being a Viking again. Vikings aren’t folding just to do it, they hold all the cards and have all the leverage. AP and his agent badly overplayed their hand here.

  70. JFat Says:

Even if Conte winds up being the guy to take his spot as the starter (which I doubt)…we’re better off.

    2014:
    Conte – 12 games , 463 snaps, 32 tackles, 3 int, 3 passes defensed
    Goldson – 14 games, 779 snaps, 63 tackles, 0 ints, 1 pass defensed

The guy didn’t make plays, he could tackle…that’s about it.

  71. deminion Says:

Good riddance Goldson was a missed tackle, flag, or blown assignment waiting to happen.

    _______________________________________________________

No offense, but this is such a stupid approach. By that logic…

Revis: 47 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 2 INT, 14 pass defenses
Kyle Fuller: 64 tackles, 3 forced fubmles, 4 INT, 10 pass defenses

So you’re saying Fuller is better than Revis? Yeah no. Conte got ran the eff over (like trucked) by Cole Beasley. You know, the 5 foot 10, 170 pound white guy? Conte is Sabby part 2. Do we really wanna see that on the field? He is worse than Goldson, stats don’t mean everything.

  73. Patrick in VA Says:

@bucrightoff – but wouldn’t the team friendly, 1 year contract that Conte signed mean that we can sign other guys to compete for the position and he will have to earn his playing time based on merit and not the amount of money he’s making?

  74. JFat Says:

The INTs and passes defensed mean a good bit in coverage. I’d want to see the total targets going to Revis vs Fuller since a lot of Revis’ value is the fact that people ignore his side of the field all together.

Are you saying the Goldson is the safety equivalent of Revis?

I’m not saying Conte is the answer, far from it…but Goldson isn’t worth his paycheck. And I didn’t see much anything during his tenure here to indicate he is better than a replacement level player.

  75. Couch Fan Says:

Whats the point of getting a 6th for a 7th? Last time I checked that would be called an upgrade. And getting anything for that guy is a coop in itself when nobody thought we would get him… I dont understand why all the couch GMs think they know so much better.

So instead of getting an extra 6th we should of just cut him? Stop. Just stop… horrible GMs you would make.

  76. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Geez at some point the Buc’s will have to spend towards the cap. Good luck Hawk

  77. Waterboy Says:

    @Celly

I still wouldn’t have made that move without having an upgrade replacement in place. There are way too many holes on this team to make this move and add another unless you consider Conte as having starter level talent which I don’t. It’s not like the team has cap problems they’re well below the cap space limit.

  78. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jason Licht has once again proven he sucks at GM.

He should have, at least, gotten a 2nd day pick. But no, he even gave a 7th to them with Goldson. And all we got is a 6th????

Go ahead, talk about his salary that we don’t need anyway because the Bucs ain’t spending.

This trade created an additional need after all the free agents are gone.

Ypu guys might view this as a good thing, but it is not. We should have kept him another year, if for no other reason than to not create yet another need.

  79. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

To top it off, the 6th isn’t even for this year, so we have one less pick to work with. So really, he has cost us 2 needs with this move.

  80. iamkingsu Says:

@celly and the rest of you numnuts

We gave up 4 million + a 7th next year just for a 6th next year when we would’ve only owe 4 million if he was released. You’ll realize that at the start of negotians in the future teams are going to want you throw in the money for the player also.

I never wanted him as a player anyway so I can careless that he’s gone. I’m just speaking for future negotiations

  81. bucrightoff Says:

I’m not saying Goldson isn’t overpaid, but he’s still better than Jennings or Conte. They downgraded the position today and the pick is fine but the team is worse. Jennings and Conte are on the street for a reason, neither is particularly good, but as has been the case this offseason, Lovie is familiar with them so he goes with them. But that was part of his downfall in Chicago was too much loyalty to his guys even if they weren’t great. And poor talent evaluation….very poor talent evaluation.

  82. Patrick in VA Says:

What if a lot of the OL, or other positions, talent that’s available in free agency is waiting to see that the Bucs get a legitimate QB in the draft and we would have a chance to win. Perhaps that’s why they’re clearing this room up and, after the draft, will sign the Dan Connelly’s and the Stefen Wisniewski’s and those sorts once they see that they would be signing on with a team that has a direction and a chance at winning.

  83. jfat Says:

Bonzai you’re out of your mind if you think Goldson would fetch a day 2 pick. He hasn’t done anything in 2 years. It was a need position even if we kept him.

Like another poster said, this isn’t an everything equal trade, we’re effectively paying the Redskins to take him W/O knowing if we have a capable replacement (not that Hawk was capable but he is the devil we know).

This is coming from a Lovie Licht supporter but after last year’s whiffs it seems this year is an exercise in getting less for something. And it’s not like we havent seen players get passed on by L&L and go on to ball out elsewhere.

I guess reasonable people can disagree about the success of this trade.

  86. Couch Fan Says:

We needed an upgrade despite having hawk, so trading him still leaves us with the same issue. Lol. I can’t believe all the whining over this bad player.

  87. jfat Says:

Iamkingsu – The 4mill guaranteed is the Bucs responsibility regardless. Whether they traded or cut him they would have to pay it. I think you are reading too much in to this. Its pretty clear the Bucs were going to get rid of him, I’m assuming this is the best offer they got, so rather than eating 4mm and getting nothing, they got an upgraded pick.

  88. iamkingsu Says:

    Bonzai

Don’t argue with these fools who think this was a good move. I knowBS when I see it and this move was BS. Nothing happened here it would have been the samething if he wouldve been released. Its just disguised

  89. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Next up, Mike Glennon?

Ok and that leaves us with one QB presuming we draft Fameis.

Who is MG8’s replacement. Some old vet like Jason Campbell with zero upside.

Again MG8 is still on a cheap rookie contract. He knows OBP and has thrown the ball to our receivers in live action. Who is going to be a better backup for FAmeis. ARe you all planning to discover another gem in the draft.

Great so we go into the season with not one but two rookie QB’s.

I honestly do not get all the haterade for MG8. So he’s not a franchise QB!
That’s why we’re drafting Fameis. But he is very servicable, experienced and cheap for a 3rd round pick.

And many of us believe he still has upside with Koetter now in the fold. MG8 has never played for a competent NFL OC. He’ll be fine backing up Fameis.

  90. Clint Says:

This doesn’t seem like a very good deal. Not like a sixth round pick is good currency or really going to help you trade into the back of the first round or anything. We have a ton of holes to fill so my guess is they’ll take a flier on someone in the sixth. It does add yet another pick which will make Saturday of the draft more fun for those interested in the Bucs.

  91. jfat Says:

Iamkingsu – You’re almost there! Same thing if he was released except, we get an upgraded pick next season which makes it better.

  92. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I sure as heck do not want Licht working a trade for AP. We would give up 1-2 2nd days picks and still take on his salary.

    Licht is killing this team.

Even if both the picks in this recent trade are 2016, take a good look at all of Lict’s trades. He truly sucks at this.

I would take Dominic over Licht any day of the week. At least he could work good trades.

  93. iamkingsu Says:

    Jfat

So you’re naiive enough to think that teams with players that are about to be cut don’t receive these type of offers?? You think the team don’t cut the players anyway after those offers?? I’m pretty sure they just let them hit the market so they can bid on them their.

When you get to swapping 6th and 7th round picks in future drafts stuff like that is not worth doing the paperwork

  94. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

At this point I may just refuse to watch games this year. There is no way all the needs will be addressed properly…heck, there is no way HALF the needs are.

Winston or Mariota are not reasons enough for me to raise my blood pressure and have a heart attack because of the horrible games.

    DE
    DE
    STRONG SAFETY
    FREE SAFETY
    MIDDLE LINEBACKER

    QUARTERBACK
    OFFENSIVE TACKLE
    OFFENSIVE GUARD
    CENTER

    PUNTER
    KICK RETURNER/WIDE RECEIVER

    Did I leave anything out?

  95. jfat Says:

Iamkingsu – I’ve never actually filled out trade paperwork before but I would hope filling out paperwork wouldnt be a deterrent from improving a draft position.

I’m failing to see how getting something is worse than getting nothing.

  96. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We have 8 picks, 11 needs, and did not sign one starter in free agency.

We’ll be lucky to hit on half the picks (extremely lucky with Licht running the war room).

So best scenario is we get 4 starters for 11 needs. That meeans we fill 7 needs with scrubs who have injury issues.

Top 3 pick next yer too.

    Exactly!!!

Especially those that wanted him cut anyway. They’re upset that we essentially cut him and upgraded a future draft pick…smh.

What’s the point. They’re going to find something to argue about regardless of what the team does.

That statement right there is proof positive you’re clueless to how business works.

Stick to Madden where you can reset the game if you dont get a trade you like.

  98. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Keeping Goldson one more year would have at least put off one need for a year.

You guys are idiots if you think this season will be worth watching.

  99. Patrick in VA Says:

@Bonzai – Easy fix. Don’t watch. No blackouts this year so the team doesn’t care if you go or tune in or anything. Come back when the team is good again. Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of company. Lots of people will suddenly be fans again once they get the holes filled and return to prominence.

  100. Kaptain Morgan Says:

Oh darn…now who will the media go to for useless sound bytes regarding “inside” and opinionated Buccaneer information?

Enjoy Washington, this guy loves the sounds of his own voice and seeing himself on TV. I’m sure by tomorrow he’ll be granting interviews to whoever he can lineup regarding his take on RGIII.

  101. Celly Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai

While I will agree that those are some needs that need to be filed, I don’t necessarily agree on them. Let me explain…

I don’t think we need 2 DEs. 1, definitely, but not 2. At some point, we have to give the guys on the roster a chance to compete and be “that guy”. We’ve gotten rid of people that Lovie/Licht belived can’t be “that guy” (Johnson, Clayborne).

Agree, we need both safety spots filled. I’m sure one will be drafted.

I think Carter can handle the “mike” role well. Just my personal opinion. And we already have guys on the roster that can handle the Sam.

QB will be addressed with the first pick.

I would say we need to upgrade 2 spots on the line (left tackle and RG). who’s to say that if we sign Wiz and he plays center, EDS can’t slide over RG and be more productive. Also, lets not forget the fact that there have been some pretty servicable linemen that have been taken from other teams’ practice squad (Penn, Donald).

As far as return men, that position could be filled with one person. As a matter of fact, i would prefer that.

With all that being said, every team in the league has a hole somewhere… And while i don’t expect all these holes to be filled in one draft/offseason, i still believe we’re headed in the right direction

  102. iamkingsu Says:

    Celly

Listen up. It was a reported that Dashon was cut back when free agency first started. Where there’s smoke there’s fire and That was a month ago. So you mean to tell me you waited negotiated for a whole month to move up from the 7th to the 6th round next year?? That’s the best you could do?

That sounds like a moral victory to me. “Well at least we got something for him”. While the rest of the NFL GM’s took note of that

  103. Bucfan4life Says:

Celly I disagree. The guys we have remaining at DE were wandering the street this time last year. While we can hope they step up it is highly unlikely that they will perform at a high level for an extended period. Guys don’t get cut and released often if they have a ton of potential. I don’t really see a cover two defense being effective when you have practice squad guys at DE. We need upgrades there.

Today’s salary dump (it wasn’t really a trade) created one more hole for the team. While these guys didn’t perform at a high level, cutting them and not replacing them with upgrades doesn’t improve the team.

To the guys talking about the money saved, why should we care about that. They are 10s of millions below the cap so why is it important that they save money. Unless you are inhering som of the Glazer Estate in the future why do you care that they cut costs?

  104. Frank Says:

Goldson, 7th Rd pick & paying $3.5 for a 6th rounder in return. Could it be more obvious that they wanted him gone?

  105. jfat Says:

I’m having trouble seeing how getting rid of Goldson has anything to do with roster needs at other positions. When Goldson was suspended or hurt or benched did you notice any negative impact on the defense? I sure didn’t. Dropped picks and bonehead penalties are the impact plays this guy made, I don’t get why anyone would be upset about getting a return on a guy headed for release anyway. I’m sure the Bucs tried to get more but he has bad film out there and a bad contract, tough combo to get a high pick with.

  106. Bucfan4life Says:

Ok so now his backup will be starting in his place and as of now there is nobody to back up the back up. If you didn’t like him fine but there team just lost some depth as well. If you think Conte is an upgrade I hate to inform you he is not. He is worse.

  107. salish_seamonster Says:

    Parade of complainers.

  108. teebeefan Says:

A 7th round pick this year is worth exactly a 6th round pick next year. This trade was not about draft picks because we got no extra value in picks through the trade. This was simply moving the Hawk off the Bucs’ books and onto the Skins’ books. Teams cannot move players with no compensation so they added an even draft pick swap to make the deal legal. Skins are obviously desperate for a safety and were willing to take on his contract without wanting to have him go through waivers and/or have him become a free agent.

  109. Pickgrin Says:

It’s amazing that people are arguing it would have been better to just cut Goldson instead of upgrading a pick next year. Both picks are for next year – everyone understands that – right? We were paying Goldson $4M this year no matter what – everyone understands that- right? WTF people? Some of you will bitch about anything.

Yea – so what that its about the lowest form of compensation – at least we got something. I consider this a positive move and fail to see how anyone could see otherwise. I never would have expected another team to take on Goldson along with his current contract. He’s honestly not worth the $3.75M Washington would have to pay him this year unless they cut him. If I was a GM looking at his tape the last 2 years – I wouldn’t want to pay 1/2 of that for Goldson’s services. His play as a Buccaneer was that of a $1.4M per year veteran back up. His contract calls for $8M per year over the next 2 years. Of course he will never see that unless he lights it up for the Redskins this year.

Redskins are taking a 1 year $3.75M chance that he can show some of what he did 3 years ago in San Fran. Sorry but Goldson was NOT a good safety for us. In fact he was a BAD safety. Bucs were basically obligated to play him paying $8M per year – and he was not good. I can’t think of 1 single play he made in like 30 starts that could be considered a true impact play. Maybe he had a couple in 2 years (he did have that 1 interception 2 years ago – LOL).

Just like in the case of Barron. This truly will be an addition by subtraction situation. As soon as Barron left – Major Wright was out there making plays that Barran wasn’t. I don’t know who the starting FS will be next year – but I bet odds are good he will make more big plays than Goldson.

Sorry to say that about Hawk. I like him as a person – but I’m glad he will not be in our defensive backfield anymore. Good luck in Washington and I hope he can find his game again.

This ever increasingly pansyas$ league has little use for a “hard hitting”, intimidating safety who is not good in coverage. That type pf safety is usually more a liability than an asset these days unfortunately.

  110. ruggyup Says:

No, as in zero, zip, nil, no team in the NFL spent more money on one position, in our case secondary, and ended up with less than squadoosh. Jo G must really enjoy watching his money go in the flush cycle and not get back to refill.

  111. Kaptain Morgan Says:

Redskins will regret this trade almost as much as they regret trading Manhattan.
