Bucs Cannot Stop With Johnson

April 16th, 2015

Yes, the Bucs got a defensive end this week, a guy former Super Bowl-winning general manager, Hall of Fame-elect and current NFL talking head Bill Polian thinks is a rising solid player.

Polian thinks the Bucs got a deal, so he said this week on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

This is not a rare opinion, but the edge rush for the Bucs still stinks. Hey, George Johnson may turn out to be another Michael Bennett, a very good, not great, defensive end. As a former tax preparer would say while looking for writeoffs so Joe could dodge paying taxes, “We need more!”

General manager Jason Licht professed the Bucs will focus most on getting pressure from the interior, hinting he wasn’t going to draft a defensive end high. But that doesn’t mean the Bucs should take DEs off their board in the upcoming draft. Many edge rush studs are found in the middle rounds.

It’s not a bad idea to load up on offensive linemen next month. The Bucs have only addressed the O-line this offseason by throwing dead weight overboard.

Going heavy on offensive linemen in the draft doesn’t mean they should ignore defensive ends.

  3. brandonbucfan Says:

I agree. Just read that Denver is now heavily looking at OL which was not previously thought. It’s possible that by the time we draft at #32 the pick that would be available (Fisher) could also be had by trading down thus giving us another pick to get that extra DE. But it will unfold at the end of RD1 Starting with SD at 17, KC 18, Cleve19, Indy 29, Den 28 and Tenn 33. Those teams will determine what we do at 34 IMO

  4. mjc Says:

Bill also was big on Manziel

  5. miken Says:

still terified at what our OL might look like. We may have 2 rookie starters and it will take them time. Jameis is really going to struggle, he could push to break carrs record. Id like us to draft a wr with speed, so I’m guessing our 1st 4 picks are QB, T, DE and WR. Maybe we can trade back in the second round to pick up another 2nd or 3rd rounder.

  6. WalkdaPlank Says:

I’m thinking we might see a few trades in a couple weeks on draft day to get higher picks. Free agency has come and gone, not really any good guys on the line left. Johnson and Smith our the best DE’s we got, and neither have started a full season. Bowers and Gholston as backup. There will probably be a lot of rotating on the line this year with no proven consistent starters other than GMC.

The O-line is in shambles. It’d be great if we could trade up and nab some O-line, but Lovie isn’t an offense guy so who knows. LT is a huge hole. Why move Dotson when he is a proven RT who can give you a solid season?

  7. Lord Cornelius Says:

I still want our top 2 picks after Winston to be O-line.

If we can trade back in the 2nd and pick up an extra 4th or 5th or something; we could go with OT / DE / OG and potentially land all impact players in those 2-4 rounds.

If we have to take a DE round 2 I really hope we get at least 2 O-lineman in the following rounds; and that 3rd rounder better start at RG lol

  8. mjc Says:

Licht saying they will focus getting pressure from the middle…. that’s because we don’t have anyone on the end. if your going to have a weak secondary as we do, you better upgrade the front 4. it just cant be the front 2

  9. Lord Cornelius Says:

Also on a side note – one reason I’ve seen people want Mariota is because our O-line is bad and they think his mobility will provide an edge over Winston.

Merril Hodge was adament about this argument which I just laugh at. How can these guys make these arguments and not check the stats to see if it even makes sense?

Mariota was sacked 31 times last year! 31 times! Winston was sacked 17 times.

That’s with Oregon having a MUCH better run game; and in a system where he typically is supposed to get the ball out fast and usually to the 1st read.

His pocket awareness / feel is nowhere near elite. That is MUCH more important than 40 times.

  10. port richey george Says:

joe says: Many edge rush studs are found in the middle rounds.

none are great immediate impact players like Dante fowler of the florida gators.
he is a pure edge rusher. not a project like the middle rounds.
this is why lovie will draft dante fowler. that is why Dante has visited one buc place a couple weeks back. lovie needs another Julius peppers like he had in Chicago.
also, Dante has buccaneer man character unlike that other guy who likes crab legs….LOL

  11. Bill Byrne Says:

Joe…..yes it does!!! Ignore DE I mean. Free agency has focused on improving the defense and they have. The offense was the primary problem in 2014 not the defense. The focus on this years draft must be on improving the offense with a QB, OL and a “brusier” of a running back. With a rookie QB this year, the BUCS must focus on building a running game and minimize the need to depend on a rookie QB to move the chains.

For the record, I don’t hold the rest of the rational UF fans responsible for this guy. We all have the obtuse in our fanbases.

  14. Mike10 Says:

Again, we have a team full of back ups/stop-gaps until someday we acquire some starters. I really hope L+L have not pigeon-holed themselves to only O lineman at the draft!

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Barry,
Why do you continue to put hash tags on your posts? Do you even understand how hash tags work?

  16. Lord Cornelius Says:

Top 10 defense after the bye week last year and have done nothing but upgrade since offseason by cutting dead weight and adding role players that know the scheme

I really don’t care if we take a DE or not. I would be content with keeping everything in place as is and going with 7 offensive lineman in the draft lol.

  17. tval Says:

Yeah, saying marcus’s mobility will help him behind an awful oline, to any extent that its a real positive for the bucs franchise, is laughable..they are conceding hes not ready, imo..this isnt arizona and washington st..you want him to regress the fastest, ask him to be cogniscent of pressure before he makes a read..lol!! That is one of the biggest reaches ive seen..absolutely ludicrous

  18. tval Says:

    Great point, cornelius

  19. salish_seamonster Says:

DE Nate Orchard in round 2.

  20. Yeah It's me! Says:

The Clueless Negative Children….. You so called fans make me sick.I think most of you should just become Pats fans instead of Bucs “so called” fans. Or just drop dead. I really dont care just find something constructive to do away from the Bucs.

  21. BucinNC Says:

I wonder of port richey George is a Florida gator fan? Hey guys does anyone know where Dante fowler went to college?

tval I also would love Nate Orchard,we disagree on the round tho bro.

  26. salish_seamonster Says:

Will Nate Orchard be there in round 3? If so, I could see OT in round 2, Orchard in round 3, then OG or FS in round 4.

  27. DallasBuc Says:

Maybe lapdog Licht will grab another marginal running back in the 3rd round or get real cute and snag a long snapper with a “great motor” to complete his draft day coup.
    Incompetence reigns in Tampa.
Winston, if they manage not to screw that up, will be the only thing to look forward to.

  28. tval Says:

    Or cognizant. Lol

  29. DallasBuc Says:

    “Bucs cannot stop with Johnson”…really?
These icons of incompetence gifted starting jobs and truckloads of cash to McCown, Collins and Johnson, all who I believe still have that pile of fortune and were kicked off the team for sucking stinkhole.
They can do whatever the hell they want, including trotting out garbage players in the starting rotation and patting themselves on the back for doing so. When it is all you know it is just what you do.

  30. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

why the personal attack Warric dunn?

  31. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

I say trade back in the 2nd and pick up a couple extra picks with one of those being for the future. Trade Glennon and Martin for picks and a player get your OL in the second. Do not trade back up into any round just take what’s on your board. The Draft really starts in the 3rd round and there is better value on the OL in the 3rd I know this and I’m not even in the Bucs draft room. Defense rest of the way and forget about CB in the draft you won’t find any gems there but you will find two FS w/ Holliman being one of them.

  32. robert 9 Says:

i love how everyone says trade glennon, trade martin blah, blah.

those are two stable, affordable guys with upside who have shown promise that were dealt a $hit hand last year.

this regime change every few year has resulted in us letting these types walk and in a constant rebuilding mode.

you don’t trade glennon yall morons. martin either, the guys behind him don’t have near the power of hitting a hole he does. problem is there were no holes last year.

  33. robert 9 Says:

if we stopped giving away picks. ie. the 4th with wright and the 5th yesterday we might have a shot at developing some guys for later rounds. that and a decent scouting staff

  34. HawaiianBuc Says:

For once, I actually agree with robert 9 on something. I sure as hell wouldn’t trade Martin if I were in charge. The only exception would be if they know something that I don’t as far as his long term health. Otherwise, the guy can play. He’s proven that. Walter Payton couldn’t have done squat last year with that line. And yes I know he didn’t always hit the hole like he should have and he had a tendency to lower his head too soon, but who the hell could blame him? He was so used to being hit the second he was given the ball, when he wasn’t, it probably scared the hell out of him. We don’t have many Pro Bowlers, so I’m not in favor of getting rid of one of the ones we have. We have plenty of piss poor talent to cut bait with.

  35. AmbushBuc Says:

I agree we should not stop with Johnson. Who knows what other free agents we can trade draft picks for?

I seem to remember bobby rainey being marginal and even undrafted but got his time in the spotlight, you may think he was great here and that’s fine but a team that goes to the playoffs every year decided he wasn’t good enough for their team and cut him. Sims came back from injury and hasn’t even played 10 games dude give it a rest
