What To Make Of Winston’s Visit

Jameis Winston’s visit to One Buc Palace was a true fish-or-cut-bait moment in the franchise history of the Bucs.

Or, as Joe’s dad would have said, “S(p)it or get off the pot.”

Winston is the leader for the No. 1 overall pick. Unless he spilled a glass of wine in Team Glazer’s lap at dinner last night (no, Joe isn’t sure if or where they dined), or has a new brush with the law in the next two months, Winston, at least outwardly, is the frontrunner.

Why else would they bring in Winston this early? Why else would the marketing and media relations wings of the Bucs have treated Winston’s visit to One Buc Palace as if a new head coach was hired? Joe doesn’t remember this much hoopla when President George W. Bush visited a Buccaneers practice.

 Joe’s premise is reinforced by none other than former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, by way of Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

“To bring (Winston) in this early tells me (the Bucs) want to keep moving through the process of the draft and start looking at other players and start putting this quarterback situation behind them in terms of Mariota or Winston,’’ Dominik said.

Now if Winston failed one (or more) tests yesterday, and the Bucs brass was not won over, then it could be time to start building an offense around Marcus Mariota. It would be smart to try to install elements of a spread offense in order to ease Mariota’s transition into the NFL.

For those in a coma, the free agency dinner bell rings in six days.

So if the Bucs were turned off by Winston yesterday, expect Bucs general manager Jason Licht to target offensive players in free agency, namely backup wide receivers and starting offensive linemen, that have spread-friendly tendencies.

  1. Hawk Says:

    Since it is unusual AND unnecessary to bring a player in this early, the ‘timing’ is most likely a move on Lovie/Licht’s part it stir interest in a trade. Not that they will, but it is good to have as many options as possible… just in case there is a crazzzzy GM out there. If there is an outlandish offer, it will change how the Bucs go into free agency.

  2. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Take a good look Jameis….you won’t be wearing Pewter and Red

  3. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    So…when is Marcus scheduled to come to One Buc Place to get the Royal Treatment?

  4. bucs4lyfe Says:

    That makes complete sense Joe, 100% agree bucs want to end the debate and focus on the rest of the draft and free agency. More than likely the reason this was done also is they probably didn’t find any other red flags in investigation unless people actually think they waited until the combine to even start the process

  5. iamkingsu Says:

    You’ll try to read too much into things when most times you just call a spade a spade. Jameis is the pick folks build a f’n bridge and get over it!

  6. iamkingsu Says:

    @scotty
    Never

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    Welcome to Tampa Mr. Winston.

  8. Bucfan4life Says:

    @hawk they are not going to trade the pick! You don’t seem to understand that this is a business and the owners have the final say! 97% of the fan base wants the Bucs to take a QB! They have had trouble selling tix for years now because the product in the field stinks and the offense is boring as hell to watch. Trading down to take an o-lineman and picking up a couple of picks in the future will not sell a single extra season ticket and would probably cause a mutiny by the fans. The Glazers understand this and therefore they will make sure that a new QB is in Tampa this fall.

    On the pure football side, we have a chance at the top QB prospect in the last 10 years outside of Luck. You don’t pass on that…..ever!

  9. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Bucfan4life…you’re 100% correct.

    Fans posting that they want the Bucs to trade down are wasting their time and thoughts. It’s not going to happen.

  10. Sapp, STFU Says:

    Trading down from 1st overall is like punting on 1st down.

    So everyone talking about trading down. . . STFU

  11. robert 9 Says:

    why is it yesterday we were led to believe he wa meeting with the glazers, when he was actually meeting licht and touring the joint.

    big difference.

  12. Espo Says:

    There is always the possibility of an offer we cannot refuse. That offer should be almost impossibly high, but there’s always a number. Let’s not completely discount that.

  13. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    BF4L…..just my observation of season ticket sales and players…..I have seen a decline in attendence leaague wide and it is a trend that will not likely reverse in general unless you are in among the ranks of NFC/ AFC championship caliber teams. Empty seats all over the NFL for the other 28 teams. The trend is folks would rather commit to their HD flat screens and only the 3 or 4 hours their team plays rather than the WHOLE day expirence $$$
    I really doubt Jameis will sell more than a few hundred ST’s despite what the blow hards here say.

  14. Nybucsfan Says:

    Jaws just said on the radio that if tampa takes shameis it will be a huge mistake and not just because of the off feild stuff. Is mechanics are way off

  15. Spike Says:

    They brought him in to find out his “character” around them… Mariota doesn’t have those issues. .. Mariota has huddle and drop back issues. Wait till his workout with Bucs and his pro day. .. #Mariota will eclipse Winston and finish this debate once and for all

  16. Leighroy Says:

    @robert 9, there is more than 30 minutes in a day brother. When you’re there for the whole day, plenty of time to do more than just tour the facility with a GM.

    We never see or hear of the Glazers but for once in a blue moon. I’d be shocked if photos were released of their meeting with Jameis.

  17. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    “Even Mariota, I’m a little bit concerned,” Jaworski explained. “The timing, the quickness, the ability to get away from center wasn’t where it needs to be. Breaking down that left leg, driving away … I didn’t see the quick drops, the quick release on that back foot that I thought I would see. “

  18. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Neither QB is worth the 1st overall pick….
    Trade down TWICE and begin rebuilding with multiple high round picks over the next 2-3 years !!!!!

  19. Eric Says:

    So if they want to make their decision before free agency, and they only bring Jameis in before free agency, what does that tell you.

    Glazer’s wanted to meet him before the final sign off.

    Pretty obvious.

  20. Josh P Says:

    @robert 9

    You don’t think the Glazer’s met with Winston at some point??? This clearly shows the only thing you do is read headlines…

    Per BSPN which im sure you love to read.

    “Tuesday’s meeting was largely with Buccaneers ownership, the Glazer family, and the trip was billed as “Glazer-centric”

  21. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Fungi….you’re wasting your time.

    On the other hand if they want Mariota…then they better trade Evans and VJax and go get some speedy WR’s…

    This is all just silly talk. Our whole offensive make up spells Winston.

    Do you guys know what Winston did with tall WR’s at FSU? Do you even realize the possibilities? I do and I can’t wait for next season.

  22. SAMCRO Says:

    Wait til Mariota comes in next. By then, he would have had more time to hone in and improved any perceived weaknesses. You know what they say about lasting impressions. He will lockup the #1 spot after his Bucs visit. He’s way more versatile than any of these stoic pocket passers, which by the way we already have one of them in MG8 on the roster, and MG8 is faster, if you can fathom that. Mariota gives our OC more versatility with “No Huddle” “Spread” plays on top of the conventional drop back plays in his game plan than MG8 or Winston can provide, and Bucs BRASS will come to this same conclusion. I’m kind of glad Winston came in first.

  23. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    I think Evans is a lot better than Kelvin Benjamin.

  24. Josh P Says:

    L&L don’t have another 2 or 3 years….. if they have another season like last year there is a good chance they could be gone.. They have to get a QB!! Not saying the Bucs need to make the playoffs next year but they need to be more competitive and finish at least around the .500 mark. The Pick is going to be a QB period.

  25. P'cola Buc Says:

    @NYBucsfan

    If the Bucs do not take Winston then the likelihood of him falling to 6th is high. You wouldn’t be trashing Jameis just so your Jets can draft him in that 6th position …would you?

  26. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

    Between the two Mariota is a clear choice for a Face of a Franchise. Joe, if Bucs and Eagles are in fact trying to work out a package deal for Mariota could the Kiko Alonso / McCoy trade have anything to do with it? Would Alonso be a fit for Lovie? Three ones, Foles and Alonso for Mariota?

  27. Josh P Says:

    @87ForJameisNOMariota

    A lot better the KB? Their skill sets are pretty close except that KB was a lot better route running than Evans was coming out of college. That is the one thing Evans will need to tighten up if the Pick is Winston..

  28. Skyline Crew Says:

    Mariota is coming after his pro day. Don’t think they are putting it behind them.

  29. mike n Says:

    I don’t know what to think….. tells me they are sold on jameis. This is the earliest any team has brought in a player ever. Typically this would happen 10 or so days before the draft, something could be fishy

  30. Eric Says:

    They will play it out until the end, and bring Mariota in and whatnot.

    They would be fools not to play it out to see what the last best offer is for the pick.

    But as between Mariota and Winston I believe they have decided. They had a preference before the combine. That preference was reported by people with inside contacts at OBP to be Jameis. That was reinforced by a great combine performance by Jameis, and they brought him in early before FA period to get everything lined up.

    Of course I am an FSU homer so the above could/likely is jaded……We shall see.

  31. Skyline Crew Says:

    Trade offers for what? If they are sold on Winston then you don’t bring in Mariota. Just wasting his time and their money.

  32. Bucfan4life Says:

    Skyline and the Mariota lovers should be in full panic mode right now. Licht is saying that they brought him in early due to Winston’s schedule. What???? Winston is looking at the potential of going first overalll! Winston and his agent would make sure the schedule is wide open for that all important Bucs visit. Other than a death in the family I don’t think anything would prevent him from flying into town on a moments notice.

    He was brought into town for one reason and that is obvious! Free agency is in a week. They brought him in to kick the tires and have the decision makers sign off on him so that they can determine who the best fits will be going into free agency. There is simply no other reasonable explanation. Now if we hear Mariota is coming into town before Tuesday then maybe it’s still undecided. If not, MM is no longer in the equation.

  33. J Says:

    My concern is:

    Even with him, the Bucs will not be “good” in the immediate future. Seeing the way he handled getting handled (blaming other teammates, yelling at the coach, not giving any credit to Oregon) i’m not sure he knows how to handle defeat.

    They want to compare him to Cam Newton. Newton hasn’t done a damn thing yet and is an average QB in the league at present.

    Also, DBs in the NFL can catch and are faster. Still I don’t get paid to make the pick.

  34. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Josh P…yes a lot better and I’m a Nole.

  35. Josh P Says:

    Agree with @Skyline(that phrase was tough to say.lol)… if in fact Winston is their prefered choice and everything went great with the meeting, his pro day is good and nothing else pops up.. Why would you bring Mariota in period and waste his time..Their not trading this pick!!!

  36. Nick Says:

    Jameis could throw 3 TDs and lead us to an opening week win and I still think some of you would think Mariota is a lock. It scares me to think that all of you are eligible for jury pools in America. The OJ verdict is starting to make sense.

  37. Josh P Says:

    Josh P…yes a lot better and I’m a Nole.

    In what aspect of Evans game is he a LOT better than KB?? curious on your perspective….

  38. Skyline Crew Says:

    Lol bucfan4life I’m not in panic mode. Mariota is still coming after his pro day on the 12th. I think they brought in Winston to talk about his character issues. Make sure his stories line up from the combine.

  39. Edgewalker Says:

    I like when people say we should trade the pick because then I know never to pay attention to their insane ramblings ever again.

  40. Josh P Says:

    @Edgewalker

    100%…… the only way you trade that pick is if you have some dumb team willing to give up their whole draft.. i.e. Washington(RG3) and New Orleans(Ricky Williams)…

    The Pick is either Winston or Mariota..

  41. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Josh P…granted KB runs better routes but I think Evans has better hands than KB.

  42. Bucfan4life Says:

    Don’t think so skyline. They need to do some major shopping in free agency and the QB they select will have an impact on what types of players they want to bring in. Seriously, it would be foolish of them to go into free agency without knowing which QB they will select. The offensive schemes for MM and JW would be quite different. That translates over to the supporting cast as well. To me, this is a clear indication that they are going with Winston and they simply brought him into to get the decision wrapped up before FA. There is no other logical explanation. Licht’s statement about scheduling issues certainly isn’t believable.

  43. Jeagan1999 Says:

    I noticed in all the pictures of Winston’s visit to One Buc, no snaps of Jameis with Lovie Smith or our new OC Dirk Koetter. I don’t know if that means anything or not, I just find it interesting. Although I am still in the Mariota camp (because I feel he is the better athlete, is safer with the ball, and has no character issues to worry over), I have to admit I was impressed with the way Winston came across in the video. He seemed humble but eager….like a kid in a candy store kind of wide-eyed. If he is the pick I’ll give the kid a chance as long as he does nothing to hurt or embarass the team. Now I’m really looking forward to Mariota’s visit and seeing both of them with coach Gruden on his QB Camp show!

  44. Josh P Says:

    @87ForJameisNOMariota

    Evans and KB are pretty equal when you weigh everything out..Evans is more physical at the line but KB is a much better route runner. Both guys can go up and get the ball.. Just not sure where you see LOT of a difference…Remember KB put equal numbers in an OFF where is was basically the only guy and teams cold lock in on him…Evans at least had VJax on the other side which kept the secondary pretty honest for the most part.

  45. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Josh P…perhaps what I mean is their college ball days. I remember KB having a lot of drops prior to his last season at FSU.

  46. Josh P Says:

    @87ForJameisNOMariota

    I’ll give you that.. i lean towards Evans with hands a little. but both are dynamic in their own right… their numbers are almost identical..Imagine if KB had another top wide out on the other side of the field to balance the playing field out…Just not sure where you see a LOT of a difference in the two.. agree to disagree….

    Winston throwing to either would be fun.

  47. Josh P Says:

    87ForJameisNOMariota

    I will give you that…. slightly…

  48. Nybucsfan Says:

    I hate the jets be one of the last teams I would root for. Just saying jaws said it today on mike and mike. I dislike jameis because of jameis. If you look at polls the bucs or the only team close on the jameis Mariota vote. I would guess because of the FSU fans. The rest country is 2 to 1 Mariota.

  49. mikeh Says:

    Winston homers! stfu! you make me want to puke. I agree glazers probably want this punk! only because they can sell tickets to you pinheads. its all about the money with them. and when the ship sinks again. fsu homers will be blaming lovie or something not that your boy was way overrated. I don’t think they will have a helmet to fit this bozos head. we shall see! the only bowl the bucs will be in with him is toilet bowl!

    You seem like a classy guy.

  51. mikeh Says:

    you also. your homeboy Winston is real classy. this is all about lining glazers pockets. there real classy also.

  52. mikeh Says:

    glazers are going to love all the women picketing outside the stadium. even if he is not guilty people believe that crap. some people will not want to take there kids to games. yes glazers will sell tickets to you fsu homers. but they will lose season ticket holders also. bad idea!

  53. Josh P Says:

    @mikeh

    You feel better?? seemed like you needed to get that off your chest.. Now maybe you can’t actually be an objective Bucs fan…The majority of us in the Winston camp haven’t sat here and bashed Mariota non stop, and the majority of us will be 100% behind Mariota if that is the pick…

  54. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    And, let’s just suppose, Winston is drafted here, wins here, and stays out of trouble here?

    I realize that hasn’t occurred, but, what if it does?

    Would you ever say you were completely wrong about the guy?

    Or are you willing to hold out, 7, 8, 9 years into his career, just WAITING for him to slip up?

    The Glazer’s pockets are already lined. They make a huge profit via profit sharing, even with a rotten team. This is about trying to create a successful organization. And, I mean that whether they pick Winston or Mariota.

    And it’s “they’re” real classy, not there (or their).

  55. mikeh Says:

    oops sorry! about the spelling. did not know I was in a class room. put it this way if malcom glazer was alive we would not even be talking about this kid.

  56. Buddha Says:

    Quicker fix is Winston. Safer pick is Mariota. Both will need time. I have no confidence that Winston will stay out of trouble. Those who ignore the past are likely to repeat it.

  57. mikeh Says:

    yes feel better. I hear you sorry!

  58. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    So, you knew Malcolm personally?

    Maybe I am thinking of a different Super Bowl Bucs team, but, they certainly had several difference makers with that had some sort of issues before joining TB, Brooks was involved with Foot Locker scandal, Sapp had red flags, Pittman was a domestic abuser.

    But, it’s interesting to know that you know exactly what Malcolm Glazer would do. You should be doing something with such a particular talent of omniscience.

  59. mikeh Says:

    I have been a bucs fan since they were est. and sorry but I don’t think this is the safe pick here. jmo.

  60. mikeh Says:

    answer yes I will admit I was wrong! will you if he screws up or stinks or runs off to play baseball?

  61. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    I respect your opinion even if I disagree. I won’t tell you to “stfu”, nor do you make me want to puke.

    But, to each his own.

  62. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    I will gladly say I was wrong about him.

    For the record, while a Nole, I never thought Ponder or EJ were worthy of their draft status or capable of being starters. Winston is beyond any QB I have seen at FSU. And I was a student when Charlie was there.

    ————————————————————————————–
    dude who in the hell are you? do you really think Winston came into town and didn’t meet the owners….the ones that are going to ultimately ok him being the face of THEIR franchise? when have you known the glazers to take cheezing photos with a potential draft pick as if to say this is definitely the pick for us….you were the only one here who thinks that

  64. Luther Says:

    It must really hurt to hate someone so bad and then have to possibly see them lead your favorite team. Don’t worry mikey, you can change your handle and root for him later.

  65. mikeh Says:

    ok. this isn’t Kansas anymore toto! and this is not FSU its the NFL and we shall see.

  66. Luther Says:

    I think you are confused. The last number 5 was in Kansas and in fact go by the name Dorothy behind closed doors.

  67. Josh P Says:

    @MikeH

    “put it this way if malcom glazer was alive we would not even be talking about this kid.”

    yeah because Malcom had no problem signing Jeremy Stevens, Michael Pittman, and Warren Sapp…. He’s a really stickler for character guys..

  68. Bucs#1 Says:

    Guys, if the Bucs do actually draft Winston and Koetter builds the offense around his style of play, then why trade Mike Glennon? I know the thought of another 3rd or 4th round pick is exciting but why trade a guy who has the same style and skillset as your starter? Too many times we’ve all seen a starting QB go down and when the back-up comes in the OC has to change the offense then to fit him. Glennon could step in under that circumstance and everything offensively could stay the same. Just a thought

  69. bucs4lyfe Says:

    speaking of Kansas we drafted another guy with character issue high in the draft aquib talib and his lingo is worse than winstons….billionaires are billionaires for a reason, they can look beyond the obvious issues and a bigger picture, if you don’t believe that i’ll just say if your incomes don’t compare then who are you to disagree

  70. mikeh Says:

    @joshp. all is not the same but different. I understand not all players and for that matter people. we all did stupid crap when young. and will always. but u can not compare each individuals trouble. there should be some concern here.

  71. Josh P Says:

    @MikeH

    I’m sure there are some concerns as there should be with every player taken in the draft(on the field and off the field)…As the Glazers they just have to weigh whether or not they are a big issue or not…Stevens and Pittman were both charged with domestic violence, Malcom had no problems with that…Not saying you, but people are so stuck on the sexual assault ALLEGATION that the other things JW has done have been drastically magnified..Plenty of players have squeaky clean college careers and then have issues when they get into the NFL…

  72. mikeh Says:

    correct and this number 5 will not be much different I fear.

  73. Josh P Says:

    @bucs4lyfe

    Thanks for reminding me of Talib… another character issued guy drafter while Malcom was still alive..

    No one could be foolish enough to tell me Kid Fameis is our “can’t miss” FIRST OVERALL DRAFT PICK AT QB!!??…he doesn’t have a single talent that will help him to immediately start on this offense..because if he can’t outrun or out-throw Napoleon Dynamite…while playing behind ANOTHER free agent patchwork line…how EXACTLY will he be able to make this offense productive!!??

    Kid Fameis is just the latest Johnny McSame.

Second Jaws was the same person who said Josh Freeman was a top 5 qb. That was literally 2 seasons ago……..again grain of salt

    —————————————————
    On gameday Glennon is not “faster”. Good lord, Tom Brady ran an atrocious forty time and is one of the best in the game. I’m hard-pressed to recall an instance where Glennon escaped a sack. Winston has more “football speed”, and can shed tackles ala Roethlisberger. Mariota will need to add weight if he’s going to sustain any type of running ability in this league. Wasn’t Mariota sacked more in college as well?

  93. DEEnice07 Says:

But what are we doing, sitting around complaining like we always do. Once FAMOUS JAMEIS does what he only knows how to do & that is compete & win games! You same gubers will be buying his jersey & cheering him on. You are the same ones who we’re complaining when we drafted Sapp daddy, enough said. Welcome Mr.Winston !! Can’t wait to walk up to Raymond JAMEIS knowing that we have a chance of winning, unlike the last decade plus.

    adjective sub·hu·man \ˌsəb-ˈhyü-mən, -ˈyü-\

    : not having or showing the level of kindness, intelligence, etc., that is expected of normal human beings

    Mikeh is basically illiterate. He shouldn’t probably call in to talk radio rather than try to get his angry viewpoint expressed via the written word. “Subhuman? Not a word genius!” That just cracked me up!!!

    JoshP, I flew up for the Chicago game a saw what Evans did to Fuller, one of the best you corners in the game. You must be blind in one eye and can’t see out the other if you think Benjamin can run better routes. He was whooping Fuller all over the field and had we fielded a competent QB it could have been a 200 2TD day.
