Warming To Adrian Peterson

March 23rd, 2015

For the longest time, Joe scoffed at those who suggested the Bucs obtain a running back. Why? There is no need. The Bucs have one of the deepest stables of running backs in the NFL and just used a third-round pick on Charles Sims last year.

Joe listened to the arguments, specifically of late for Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. But they just seemed like yet another example of how Bucs fans are in love with names they recognize and have their minds screwed up by fantasy football.

However, Joe began thinking differently and, after talking to a fellow member of the Bucs press corps over the weekend, is beginning to warm to the notion of Peterson.

Divorce appears inevitable between the Vikings and Peterson. And the Bucs don’t have a running back to strike fear in a defensive coordinator’s heart. Do any of them keep a linebacker up at night?

Additionally, Peterson is so talented, he doesn’t need a brick wall of an offensive line. All he needs is a crease. And we all know the offensive line of the Bucs is sure full of holes.

Lastly, Peterson would take a bunch of heat off of Jameis Winston. Do any of the current Bucs running backs have enough juice to distract defenses so they can’t gang up consistently on a rookie? Maybe Bobby Rainey, but for reasons unknown, he sure was in Lovie Smith’s doghouse last year.

A guy like Peterson would draw attention from defenses, force them to play honest, and perhaps open things up for Winston and give the rookie some confidence along the way.

Granted, Peterson is a 30-year-old running back, and they often hit the wall. It is an ugly fact only fools ignore. So Joe wouldn’t give up the house for Peterson. No more than a second-day draft pick. Preferably a third-day draft pick.

If you can squeeze two good years out of Peterson for a third-day draft pick, enough to get Winston’s feet firmly on the ground, that would be just fine.

No way I’d be happy giving up more than a 5th round pick for a 30 yr old RB, I don’t care who it is.

  2. Greg Schiano Says:

You are going to need someone to provide offense! Famous Porky Jameis is slower than the big Poodle….so getting a RB like AP would be excellent!

Of course, when Famous Porky starts stealing the crab legs and assualting female students, AP can take him to the woodshed!!

The only problem is you still have Lovie Smith as a HC. No playoff run with a guy who throws the last game intentionally just to guarantee the #1 pick instead of the #2 pick. Does not matter who they draft…you still have the same HC.

If someone told Chucky he would have to lose a game on purpose…his head would explode, he face would be all red, and he would suffer a mycardial infarction! That’s a heart attack for you in the Famous Porky Jameis mob!

  3. Bee Says:

If the Bucs could do an swap with Doug Martin then yes, do it. But this team needs as many draft picks as it can get. Don’t trade away any picks this year!

  4. Barry Says:

AP with Mariota running ability, a la R.Wilson and M.Lynch

#TheCreepCrab be saying “Where All Da Passed out girls at”. #BabyHands #INTs

    #DP #HGH #PEDs #BrainDeadRetard

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Winston play action with Peterson in the backfield = Lethal.

  6. Couch Fan Says:

I agree but at the same time AP is no ordinary RB. Like Creamsicle, I wouldn’t give up more than a 5th and I’m sure he’s worth much more than that to the Vikings.

  7. Ray Rice Says:

Why the FUK would they want Peterson? They already have Charlie Sims! #just kidding

  8. nate_tweetz Says:

Trade them Martin and a 4th rd pick

  9. pick6 Says:

we need to spend alot of cap money and the current free agency field doesn’t justify it. don’t give up the farm, but doug martin and a 3rd day pick are okay by me. i’d rather spend my mandatory money on AP than making some overrated FA a top 10 earner just because we have to spend the cash

  10. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Watched the NFL football life on Eric Dickerson and I could see AP coming here seeing the environment and the lack of OL stay here for a year and then say time to go…

  11. Buczilla Says:

Ray Rice, that may have just been your best post yet. I actually did a spit take in my office at work.

  13. danati74 Says:

I don’t want him either. We have a deep stable of running backs. Doug Martin may have another year on his RC contract. Might as well see what he has under a better line this year I hope. Then we got Charles Sims with a 3rd last year whom the staff was high on. Build thru the draft. Why trade another pick that we can use on an OL or DE. Sure its taking a shot, but so is taking a shot on AP at 30. D. Martin his RC year was maybe one RB behind AP in total yards. Im sure the staff will want to prove why they drafted Sims in the 3rd the same way they want to prove why they picked ASJ in the 2nd. Draft and develop…Stop trading future picks on these Vets that have one or 2 years left.

  14. Josh P Says:

Don’t forget guys AP has two less years of years of tread on his tires than most 30 year old RB. Missed all of last year and almost a full year from ACL injury. Bucs could get a good 3 or 4 years out of him.

  15. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

    GET OL HELP

  16. WS99 Says:

Winston, AP, Evans, Vjax, = Playoff bound

Oh and don’t forget Chis Conte, that in itself garuntees us a first round bye. Jk

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

I don’t get the label “The Bucs have one of the deepest stables of running backs in the NFL”

The Bucs have 3 to 4 average to below average NFL RB. The media has over valued the Bucs once again.

    Moves to happen
    Mg8 – stays
Martin – traded for 5th round
    the Hawk – Cut!

  18. bucrightoff Says:

The Vikings have zero incentive to trade him for nothing. Dare him to retire and give up all that money, but they aren’t trading him just to trade him. So it’s not gonna be a late round pick, they’ll still expect value (so a 2nd round pick at a minimum). And if they don’t get it, they’ll say “Wear Purple or give up $20-40 million.”. Take a wild guess what AP does then.

  19. Buccfan37 Says:

I figure that has about a snowball’s chance in Florida of happening. AP that is.

  20. San Francisco Joe Says:

I think we’ve run out of things to talk about..

  21. Joe Says:

You are going to need someone to provide offense! Famous Porky Jameis is slower than the big Poodle….so getting a RB like AP would be excellent!

This narrative interests Joe a great deal. People used to rave about how mobile Josh Freeman was. His combine 40 was no faster than Winston, yet Winston is slow.

Someone help Joe out. How could Winston be slow and Freeman be mobile when both ran equally as fast?

  22. haz bean Says:

Get an RB in the 5th or 6th round and he’ll be as good as doug martin was. It’ll be worth not having a 30+ domestic violence case wandering the sidelines.

  23. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

David Johnson would suit of perfectly.

  24. Buxfan Says:

Joe, you must ignore the ignorance of some fans. These are Bucs fans you know. We are known as the least knowledgeable fans in the NFL. Example. Some of our fans believe that we should bring in Tebow. SMH! Joe, don’t respond to silliness.

  25. Bucco brice Says:

Same scenario that put us in this mess….trading draft picks for short term prospects…..draft, draft, draft….build a winner, no more quick fixes

  26. Armando Says:

@Greg Schiano Only a true lowlife would need to lie in his posts to make his point, which can only mean your a Gator fan – I bit my tongue when the bucs drafted Reidel Anthony – I knew he would suck but I gave him a shot but you have to imply that Jameis is to fat or slow – well Brad Johnson was a statue – Superbowl Ring, Tom Brady, statue – SuperBowl Ring, Peyton & Eli, statue’s – SuperBowl rings, etc, etc, etc, the only truth in your post is your a moron and you continue to prove it again and again – prepare to lose to FSU again gator

Google “Jameis Winston td run vs. Oklahoma State”. Post that video. That’s the easiest way to shut up Jameis trolls like Greg Schiano.

  28. Bucco brice Says:

    …and another distraction…trade sims I say…Rainey-Martin-james a good trio…add j.wilder jr as 4th 🙂

  29. bucs4lyfe Says:

after the way doug martin ripped into the Vikings his rookie year im sure he’d be a part of the deal so there would be no need to give up a 2nd round pick or multiple pieces, im all for this if the deal is right and if he gets 1000+ he’ll more than make up for whatever we give up…..behind this line 2 years is about all we can expect to get out of him though

  30. StPeteBucsFan Says:

If the price is right we HAVE to consider AP.

He’s a generational running back. Yeah he doesn’t have a lot of tread left on the tires but as Joe points out if we don’t break the bank in draft picks and get a couple of years out of him it’s a no brainer.

Consider this as well. How motivated will AP be if he leaves the Vikings. Can you say off the chart, consumed with motivation?

AP is perhaps the ONLY RB in the past decade that could carry a bad and or rookie QB. Look at what he did in Minnesota with bad QB’s.

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    This is rediculous…..we draft WR/TE/RB

We are drafting a QB…..and what….we are interested in another weapon while basically ignoring the Oline…..what the he!! is going on?

  32. BFFL Says:

    Joe,

Freeman was 260lbs his first few years and he would shake defenders off him like Big Ben. I don’t see the core strength from JW to be able to do this.

  33. AmbushBuc Says:

AP is 30. Very few backs maintain their effectiveness after 30. Maybe AP is an exception, but odds are against.

  34. nate Says:

If we can get ap you take zp.. if we can get any hall of fame people take them!

  35. 77bassguitarist Says:

Hey joe can you stop using a broad brush to paint all bucs fans!! Alot of us are extremely intelligent when it comes to the x and o’s of football you to guys can be real jerks somtimes!!

  36. 77bassguitarist Says:

I’m sick of you and all the rest of you blow hards always acting like all buc fans are idiots and we just jump at any and everything!! It’s my opinion that you two guys are the morons!

  37. ChessMaster Says:

I have two black standard poodles and they are VERY fast dogs.

  38. WS99 Says:

I watch entirely too much nfln. Thinking about the Hershall Walker trade. WhAT IF we traded GMC for 8-9 picks to build our team like jimmy Johnson did in the 90s? That would be a non-starter right?

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

@Bucco Brice- Your first post was money! Don’t continue to rent players for a short-term fix. Build through the draft.
AP is a generational player, given. Can the Bucs afford another rental? I don’t think the risk/reward is worth it.

  40. MadMax Says:

I remember getting excited about this a few weeks ago in one of the articles. I think there were maybe 5 of us wanting this, and everyone else was against it. As long as we can also get a LT with our 2nd or 3rd, maybe trade a 4th and 5th for him. He’d be worth it.

  41. LargoBuc Says:

AP has more talent and can make more of an impact than all four of our backs combined. AP>Martin

  42. fastclipper4444 Says:

Could help bring in some ticket buyers; maybe even fans.

  43. Pickgrin Says:

It would be awesome to have AP for 2-3 years – and he’s the type of special player that will likely be good if not great – even in the twilight of his career.

Paying him a bunch of $ is one thing and we could afford him at this point – but giving up draft picks is a bad idea. There are numerous good young backs that can be had in rounds 5>7 this year and we have tons of other needs.

If the deal was D. Martin and a 5th rounder – then it would probably be worth it. Anything more and the Bucs should pass and see what Martin, Sims, Rainey and Mike James can do with a better OLine and a real OC. I’m betting the backs we have now can be very effective with good play calling and a better OLine.

  44. Cover deuce Says:

If he’s willing to renegotiate that bloated contract I would give them as high as a 3rd or 4th. But given his current contract, previous workload, age, and injury history, I wouldn’t give up more than a 6th for him.

  45. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Not a chance, he would go to the Cowboys. Besides, I’m not ready to give up on Doug Martin yet. We’ve seen what he can do behind a decent line. One thing’s for sure, if the force-feeding of Charles Sims continues, our rookie QB will not do very well.

  46. Jordan Says:

This reminds me of Revis. Remember that teams were willing to trade for Revis, but his agent was saying that he wouldn’t restructure and he might even sit out and not play for certain teams. I wouldn’t even trade a 7th for AP. I’d rather him come play here on his own terms after he is cut.

  47. unbelievable Says:

AP couldnt do sh*t behind this oline.

Fix the line and any of our current RBs would excel. Plain and simple folks.

  48. Destinjohnny Says:

Yep let’s have the cart pulling the horse- no wonder u liked dominic so much.

  49. Mike10 Says:

The problem isn’t the OL or that peterson is 30. He will be in the HOF one day as long as he stops whipping children. The problem is Licht. This is reminiscent of the Revis deal where we had all the leverage on a guy coming off a season where he didn’t play and has stated he no longer wants to play for his current team… And I don’t see Licht being able to exploit his leverage any better than Dominik could. Giggles Licht will give up that booty if he does make a play for Peterson you mark my words.. there won’t be that Percy harvin for a 6th rounder and a big “thank you card” trade made by any of the Licht hearted front office team

  50. The original "Kevin" Says:

It would be AWSOME!!!!!!!!!! But I don’t see it actually happening.

  51. Greg Smithwick Says:

So, I guess we’re all okay with a child abuser, and we are sure that he has been to counseling, and it won’t happen again?

  52. Matt Says:

In reality he isn’t worth it , Idc how many people love this guy. He is 30 hasn’t played in a year and his tread is dwindling away day by day . Trade Doug MARTIN a healthy younger pro bowl RB that is way cheaper . No I’m good & on top of that Minnesota wants a 2nd rounder

  53. JP3 Says:

Winston is a bum and if the bucs draft him in going to have to find a new team. Peterson would be good for us, make Martin earn his spot back.
