Stop With “Face Of Franchise”

March 6th, 2015

jameis 1215

Joe’s about fed up with all this righteous moralism being directed at prospective Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston.

Why, yesterday, a former Bucs guard who makes a living behind a microphone got all Sunday tent preacher and basically lectured Winston, telling the young gunslinger he had to be a monk if he was going to lead Tampa Bay.

Really?

Joe is just going to throw out names and lifestyles, shall we?

Would you say, Eli Manning, two-time Super Bowl champion, is the face of the Giants? Oh, yeah, playing in the largest market in the NFL. Isn’t that a giant fishbowl?

The Giants didn’t melt down as a franchise, and Manhattan didn’t crumble, when Manning was caught doing red-blooded American male things.

Or how about Ben Roethlisberger? He, too, a two-time Super Bowl champion for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises. Trust Joe, Roethlisberger is the face of the Steelers. Yet did the city of Pittsburgh slide into the Ohio River when Roethlisberger was caught doing red-blooded American male things?

Or how about Tom Brady? No question he is the face of the Patriots this side of Bill Belicheat. Four-time Super Bowl champion. People seem to forget Brady knocked up scalding hot actress Bridget Moynahan only to dump her for his current model wife. Did the Chowderheads have a second American revolution as a result?

Stop with the preaching. Let Winston be Winston.

So long as he is racking up wins, doing his duties at One Buc Palace and being a responsible teammate and solid leader, who gives a damn what he does away from football if it doesn’t break any laws?

The less-than priestly lives of Brady, Manning and Roethlisberger sure never Pearl Harbor’ed their teams.

yes sir .. I want a thief to be the face of the bucs… just think with all that money he can really get into trouble !

  2. Bawlmerbucfan Says:

That picture of Eli Manning is awesome!!!!

  3. mike n Says:

Joe, being a single guy and having a baby is not scandelous… you are really reaching.
And Elli… again you are really reaching.
Strong franchises and super bowl winning (plural) qbs and franchise are treated differently. I love the bucs , but we are sooooo irrelevent. If we didn’t play no one would notice. The #1 pick will be the face of the franchise.
Don’t forget, a year after big ben won a super bowl and proved to be elite he was almost cut.

  4. Lev in Philly Says:

The Winston criticism makes me sick. I can’t wait till this guy proves everyone wrong.

  5. tortured orlando bucs fan Says:

This “issue” could not be more black and white. Its not by any means fair, but if he wins, he can do whatever the hell he wants (inside the law, of course). If he wins a superbowl or 2, that just ups the ante. But if he doesnt win, the most miniscule things will be blown out of porportion, taking a shot with a fan on howard in the offseason will lead to numerous articles discussing “his serious drinking problem” “how hes irrisponsible” and “a horrible person for destroying the bucs franchise wiwith his outrageous off the field behavior”. Im in the pro winston camp…and moreso I think its unfair and frankly disgusting how athletes are portrayed by the media. I could care less if he posts messages in support of the westboro baptist churchor has sex with baby goats…thats his life, his problem and none of my business. I personally know two current nfl players (one fairly prominent and one “borderline”) and both of these guys do things that the media would crucify. Unless I know them, I judge athletes based ONLY on their on field performance, their personal lives are none of my business and frankly I feel sorry for a lot of those guys.

Sure, some fans will say because of their paycheck or their “celebrity” status they should have to deal with it, but I disagree. You have to look yourself in the mirror and seriously consider a few things if you talk down about somebody you’ve never met who has no effect on your personal life (other than 16 days of the year (possibly a few more, but we’re bucs fans heh) where its free game to talk as much sh t about their on the field performance!

  6. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Tell Winston to say away from Yoncee…lol

  7. Jeagan1999 Says:

Chill out, Joe. Giving Winston some good advice to avoid the Mons Venus and not end up in the tabloids is hardly equivalent to being a “monk”! As for the other examples of Manning, Brady and Big Ben….they have all proved themselves in the NFL a….Winston has not! Big difference!

  8. bucrightoff Says:

The Eli and Brady stuff are borderline shark jumping. Not even remotely comparable to Jameis, thanks for playing though.

  9. Supersam Says:

We need someone who can cast a Posotive light on this orginization, Winston isn’t that guy. He’ll only bring more negative media towards the Bucs, ESPECIALLY of he messes up again, which in my mind will only be A matter of time before he does.

  10. Harry Says:

And who has been the face of the franchise for the Jets for the past 5 years? Sanchez? Almost. Revis? Not quite.

Rex Ryan was “IT” for 5years, and IMO, he is a hell of a coach. It was amazing he survived his huge scandal and that it did not end in de”feet” of his career. I’d take him for the Bucs coach in a heart beat.

  11. MarshallU Says:

Yep, every NFL team needs a Thief, a Shoplifter, a Vandal, a Public Nuisence and an Acussed Felony Rapist as the face of their franchise. How proud the fans will be (cough cough)

  12. Jeagan1999 Says:

Joe…would you have gotten upset if Ian had told Johnny Rehab last year…”Hey rook, you might want to ease off the partying a bit until you can prove you belong in the NFL!”

Reminds me of that scene in Bull Durham when Kostner tells the young pitcher he has mold on his shower shoes…..”If you win 20 in the show you can let the mold grow back and people will think you’re colorful, but until you win 20 in the show, it just means youre a slob!”

Same thing here! If Winston proves he can win in the NFL, then he can hang out at all the strip clubs he wants and people will annoint him as the second comming of Broadway Joe….but until then, he needs to keep his nose clean and work hard!

  13. MarshallU Says:

Funny how people either don’t remember or never knew that in 2001 Ryan Leaf was actually a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Just a thought

  14. robert 9 Says:

    …………………if it doesn’t break any laws……………….

    that was funny right there

    here’s yer sign…..

  15. Harry Says:

“…and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us…”

Not meaning to get all religious on you, but I hope I am around the pearly gates when some of you haters enter, so I can see how clean you are…

  16. robert 9 Says:

no worries harry, if your moral compass supports JW I’m sure you won’t be there to greet us.

    here’s yer sign

  17. Nybucsfan Says:

You know your in trouble when you try to us other people to justify him. And only Big Ben RAPISTBURGER is as bad a Shameis. He has done one bad thing after another. He made is bed. You like him you will have to deal with it. It’s not going to stop or go away. What do you think the will do to him at away games?

  18. knucknbuc Says:

“Dont ever talk about or question on the field or off the field my boy,my king,my savior jameis Winston AGAIN!!!!”

    -Joe’s voice

  19. MTM Says:

I understand where Beckles is coming from. If your going to keep saying you want to be the “face of the franchise” then don’t do something out in the public that will reflect poorly on your organization. If your persona is that of a tail chasing party guy you better be winning because the minute the loses start piling up. The fan base will be up in arms. Winston is on the verge on over saturation. Too many stories being pushed around and its not his fault. Its the nature of the media. it looks like Licht is a Winston supporter. Lovie maybe of the fence at this time.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Last time I checked Manning, Rothlesberger & Brady won Superbowls……that buys them some good will.

Also…it is Winston himself that keeps saying ” I want to be the face of the franchise”…..that along with a couple other coached-up phrases….

That’s fine…but if he continues to claim he want’s that role….he is raising expectations….and deserves good advice…

  21. Luke Says:

What’s wrong with wanting the face of the franchise to be a good role model for our kids?

  22. John Says:

Winston was accused of raping someone. While he was not charged, he still lacked the common sense and decency to know not to say the “fhrintp” line.

In his biggest game of the season (against Oregon), he flopped under the pressure getting the face of the referees and his own head coach.

I’m not saying Marcus is better today, but sure is a 10000% more mature than Winston.

    Remember these names:

Geno Smith (pro style offense), Christian Ponder (pro style offense), Jamarcus Russell (Jimbo was his OC)

Winston throws more ints than most QB’s while playing basketball colleges.

You like him you will have to deal with it. It’s not going to stop or go away. What do you think the will do to him at away games?

atleast someone actually will admit that a guy who was accused of rape as an adult is worse than Winston….wonder why no one talks about it anymore, it has everything to do with winning and that’s all football is about. don’t understand how people talk like a 21 year old kid’s life is defined and is set in stone, this is America the land of Marion Barry’s and second chances lol

  24. bucs4lyfe Says:

you don’t take smiling photos with a guy after he rapes you (allegedly)….just sayin

  25. flmike Says:

You’re also comparing two diametrically opposing markets, the North East is a much more tolerant and progressive section of the country as compared to Tampa. Tampa is still Tampa and is still part of the Bible Belt by extension due to all the Mid-West retirees, and is still in the sphere of influence of the Lower Alabama crowd.

  26. Phil Says:

The girls at Mons wont let him get into any trouble.

  27. mikeh Says:

GINO SMITH S***S- and now the jets still need a QB. gino smith also had a chip on his shoulder but a lot less mouth than Winston. and he is a interception machine. meaning gino!

  28. bucs4lyfe Says:

Just because e.j manuel played for FSU that doesn’t really prove anything about him or jimbo fisher or Winston…..the fact that buffalo picked him so high made every fan in the nfl throw up in their mouths, no one thought he had the talent of Winston or mariotta or any of the quarterbacks every drafted by Oregon or FSU. if you want to argue the systems neither one of them are known for having great quarterbacks but I’d go with FSU any day when it comes to turning out pro’s and hall of famers at any position

  29. Posey99 Says:

This is turning into a big joke.

  30. mikeh Says:

I agree it does not matter if this or that QB was from same school coach etc. that he will not be good.

    ———————————————————————————-
if your new York jets for instance yes your dumb enough to attempt to move up and draft a quarterback exactly like geno smith as far as skill set. geno smith senior year had 71% completion percentage, 4205 yards and 7 int’s and people still said the exact same things about him they are saying about MM IMO

  32. mikeh Says:

my jets? I am a bucs fan pinhead! and don’t care what the jets do. your as mouthy as Winston.

  33. mikeh Says:

was not putting down Winston. so why are most of the Winston lovers always looking for an argument. you act like you know it all. you trying to be face of the joe bucs fan club!

  34. Pickgrin Says:

Good job Joe. That needed to be said. You are echoing exactly what I said in a post yesterday:

    Pickgrin Says:

As long as he is eligible to play ball every Sunday – I could care less what happens in his personal life off the field. Such a ridiculous and overly PC world we live in these days. You think all the greats from the past who had “colorful” personal lives could live up to the scrutiny that is now being forced on our sports stars? People are human. They sometimes make errors in judgement and bad decisions in their life. We all do and we all have. The President got a BJ in the white house from a girl less than half his age and lied to the whole country about it for God’s sake – and yet he is not defined by that.

Jameis Winston is a winner, a fiery leader and one hell of a talented and knowledgeable quarterback. Tape says it all. The rest is just noise.”

Look – People are allowed to have lives and let their hair down after work and have some fun and drink a couple beers and get laid. Geez. Anyone who criticizes that type of behavior from the “face of the franchise” is likely a hell of a hypocrite.

As long as Winston stays out of trouble with the law (he has never once been arrested – mind you) and is available to play on Sundays (not one thing that he has ever done would have gotten him suspended from an NFL game) – then who here or anywhere has a right to criticize the young man for his “behavior”??? Apparently quite a few which is sad.

read bro I said nothing about fans, I said new York jets as in the new York jets and I wouldn’t assume any jet fan would care enough to be wasting their time here talking about the bucs….sorry i’ll make sure im more literal and specific next time damn joe you need to shut down this post people are getting to worked up

  36. robert 9 Says:

look, bucfan has a new love in his life.

    enjoy mike h. lol

    be careful though, he thenthative

  37. robert 9 Says:

buc4lyfe I mean, sorry, the relationship wasn’t that memorable 🙂

  38. mikeh Says:

    @BUCSFRLYF- SORRY! man!

  39. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @ mikeh

no issues with you even though you called me a pinhead don’t take that stuff personal atleast what you say makes actual sense unlike Robert 9 who personally think is a 9yr old drop out because he shouldn’t be here before 3:30….it’s a great debate and i respect most people’s opinion but don’t have to agree with it like no one has to agree with mine….don’t be like the adolescent and make it all about me mikeh!!!!

  40. mikeh Says:

lmao- no I was wrong. when I saw your jets I freaked out! I would rather be a saints fan than a jets fan lol.

  41. SteveBucsFan Says:

    @John

    I fixed it for you:

    Geno Smith (spread offense)

  42. mikeh Says:

again sorry about the name calling. go bucs!

  43. Kaptain Morgan Says:

Simmer down Joe. We all know there is a double standard and a big difference between if the ‘Face of the Franchise’ and Starting QB stays out all night, parties til 3am, hangs out at strip clubs and has his picture taken with socialites, strippers, and party girls and say if the back-up Offensive Guard did the same thing. No one would care and no one would publish it if is the 50th guy on the depth chart compared to the guy who is (or who wants to be) the face of the franchise.

Beckles is just giving the guy (and others) some advise, be careful for what you wish for…everything is magnified in the spotlight and you have less freedom to do certain things in a fishbowl.

  44. tval Says:

If winston fans could somehow take a glimpse into the real lives of all the holier than thou crowd, critical of his every move, theyd stop arguing about off the field, with the willful ignorant, and realize its just pathetic attempt to demonize a good kid who they are immensely jealous of.

  45. bucs4lyfe Says:

Ian Beckles is a real dude and he has no love for rookies at all…..he gave Winston the best advice a guy with that history could get, the rest will come naturally but what he really needs to do is put your head down grind and stay in your lane because your still a rookie, earn the praise on the field…don’t be the rex ryan of quarterbacks

  46. SoonerinTampa Says:

Here we go with the thin skinned Winstonites!!!

Waaaaa…quit picking on our qb!!! Waaaaa…quit saying bad things about him!!!

    Somebody call a wambulance!

  47. Nick2 Says:

Maybe Ian forgot he has his “Skanktuary” to go home to every night. Hey I think thats great but football is football. Nobody ever said Brett Favre sending a picture of his junk is going to keep him out of the football Hall of Fame or Joe Namath or Big Ben to Joes point. I want a great quarterback and hopefully he stays out of jail periood!!

  48. Nick2 Says:

Luke McCown would have been the best role model “Face of the Franchise” that we could ever ask for. So if thats what you want great but it has nothing to do with winning games people.

  49. SoonerinTampa Says:

Also…then tell Jaboo to stop saying 50 times in every interview!!

  50. Barry Says:

Did I hear right that Winston wants to trademark the phrase “Famous Rapist” ?

  51. Barry Says:

If Famous Jameis raped a tree in the Forrest and nobody was around to see it, then was the tree raped? #TheCreepyCrab may have an out here.

  52. Pickgrin Says:

    #creepycarthiefbarry

  53. Barry Says:

    Jack The Ripper
    John Wayne Gayce
    Famous Jameis
    Ted Bundy
    The Green River Killer
    Bill Crosby
    The Boston Strangler

  54. ddneast Says:

    So true Joe.
Remember Joe Namath lounging pool side before the Super Bowl with bikini clad beauties.
The male animals natural DNA is to be a predatory beast and to hunt the female species.
Men get in trouble when they start apologizing for their behavior which, if they aren’t doing something obscene in public or unlawful, they have nothing to apologize for.
Was I chasing girls? No, I don’t have to chase them, they come to me. I love women. Talk to God if you have a problem with that. I choose not to argue with him.

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo knows what it’s like to be the “face of the franchise” Pablo was the face of his local Taco Bell. Pablo had to be on his best behavior which means Pablo literally had to have very clean hands. Pablo also checked regularly to make sure he had no boogers”

  56. SSG Mike Says:

The difference between Winston and the other 3 superstars you mentioned is that they had done something (WIN) with their teams before getting into trouble. I DO expect Winston to be Monk-Like only with some football excitement if he comes here. If the first order of excitement is the Police Blotter then we are SCREWED” . Wish the Joe’s would cut out their slobbering love affair with Winston. Say what you like, We will be better off regardless of which one of the QB’s we pick even if it’s only in the HOPE we will have. I personally would take Mariotta but will be happy with either as long as we get one of them.

  57. Mike10 Says:

If you draft Winston, how he goes so too do the Bucs moving forward..

You can’t name any good team without quickly being able to name their QB. Call it the “face,” call it the mascot, but don’t just call it the QB because everything will ride on this guys shoulders. It’s why were lost in the mud after Freeman now and why we can’t screw up this decision

  58. jfat Says:

I don’t think any of those QBs have called themselves the “face of the franchise”…repeatedly….before they’ve even been drafted.. I get that to many he would be by default if he was the #1 pick, but he needs to earn it. If I were a vet I could see being a bit annoyed by a kid who hasn’t played a down in the NFL calling himself the face. He’s sounding a lot like a “me” guy and not an “us” guy to me. I’m probably just being racist tho.

  59. Bucfan4life Says:

Barry the car stealing idiot with a pea brain. Still going with creepy crab I see. You so fking pathetic!

  60. BoltIsle Says:

Surprising that the first comment by Ben acknowledges he wants Barry as the face of the franchise

  61. grafikdetail Says:

noticed no one is talking about Mariota much

  62. BoJim Says:

Rape blah flop blah int’s blah. Same old sheet.

  63. Jack D Says:

    @Joe

As a real (seminary trained, ordained with 40 years service both in the armed forces and civilian life) I do not Judge the man for his actions but I can still look upon them with disdain and disgust. While your examples were interesting you seemed to leave out another one closer to home which as I remember, you were very high on. That right, your other favorite # 5. Wasn’t it partying hard that started his fall from grace? If Winston is to be our quarterback, I would like for him to mature and show everyone he can and wants to be an upright standing citizen beside being the most famous guy in town. He has that distinction now and look at the divided loyalties. I cant wait till the draft has come and gone so we can get past all the name calling and get serious about our Bucs playing and winning for a change.

Sermons over and I havn’t called for an offering. Have a great weekend.

  64. lurker Says:

“I do not Judge the man for his actions but I can still look upon them with disdain and disgust.”

you say sermon, i say you speak with forked tongue.

  65. Jack D Says:

    @Lurker

You need to re read the sentence that you don’t understand. I state that I do not judge his actions but I can still disapprove of said acts. Can’t you love your wife but despise her actions if they(her actions) harm you are someone else? No Forked tongue my friend. Do you approve of his stealing ? His antics up on the table? His immaturity? Again, just in case you did not get it, I dislike his actions off the field and do not judge him, that my friend is in God’s hands for him, you and I. Besides I have enough work trying to keep me in the straight and narrow to judge anyone else.
