Sean Payton Made Bucs’ Day

March 11th, 2015
Jimmy Graham won't be haunting the Bucs' secondary much more any longer.

Jimmy Graham won’t be haunting the Bucs’ secondary next season.

Joe’s former Eastern Illinois University brethren Sean Payton, without trying, made the Bucs’ day minutes before free agent dinner bell was heard from coast-to-coast and beyond yesterday

No, the Bucs haven’t made a splash. Didn’t even make a ripple. For a variety of reasons, some of which Joe touched on, the Bucs became spectators as the bell rang loud and clear.

Given the Karlos Pena-like strikeouts the Bucs made last year in free agency, Joe’s pretty sure the inactivity so far, whether planned or forced, was a good thing.

But as the Bucs try to improve and pull themselves up to be competitive with their NFC South brothers, the biggest transaction did not come from One Buc Palace, but from New Orleans.

The Saints, shockingly, traded away perhaps the most lethal pass-catching tight end in the NFL. Jimmy Graham went to the Seattle.

Word on the street is that Mark Barron was up all night suffering from severe flashbacks.

So while the Bucs were spectators yesterday — again, not a bad thing given recent history — they improved by default. Thanks to Payton.

He’s not such a bad guy, after all.

They did get one of the best centers in the game, first round pick and opened a lot of cap room.

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

Graham didn’t give us much trouble last year. There is speculation that the league may have cracked the code on dealing with graham and that might be why he was traded, along with his big cap number. I would’ve been happier to see the Panthers trade Olsen

  3. Sam Says:

    Cap casualty plain and simple.

    Patrick in VA:

    Spot on…….

Making other teams weaker will not make the Bucs stronger.

  5. Phil Says:

The Bucs could at least go out and sign Greg Hardy.

  6. Espo Says:

Our most exciting moves are cutting dead weight and a move made by a division opponent. Come on let’s do something! I’m glad we cut Collins but now we have to find a replacement. Whoever it is, I’m confident he isn’t on the roster.

  7. RayRay1 Says:

So we’ve reduced ourselves to hoping other teams fail so we might succeed ? Way to look pathetic.

  8. Espo Says:

And who said the saints got weaker? The way brees spreads the ball around, they could better use that center and I’m sure that pick will go on defense.

  9. HotRod Says:

I read yesterday his dead money counted 9 million against their cap anyway…so they only saved around 3 million – doesnt seem to be a huge cap savings. Something is up with him and Payton or NO.

  10. bucrightoff Says:

No it’s purely a cap move. Forget the money this year, they are in cap hell for a few years and still need to shed more. They badly mismanaged things. Still if healthy Unger and a first round pick (even if it’s really a second round pick) is a nice return for a cap move.

  11. robert 9 Says:

injury prone, and the saints know something

    nicks anyone?

either way it’s a plus for us. i’ll take it.

  12. louden Says:

If the saints would be run like the Bucs:

with the Graham-trade-aquired first rounder and cap space and the good Center..
    the Saints would be:

Cutting the Center becausse maybe they will find an uprgrade (although the Center is good)

    – they would pick Doug Martin in the first round; or a Punter, or kicker, or a special teams ace because they put such high emphasis on special teams.. wether the player can play any regular snaps or not – not important, because just trust the regime and they know what they need in their grand sheme..

    – and with the cap space, they hope the Bucs do realy cut Mike Jenkins while Training camp (because they NEED DB´s)
and if he is cut, they jump on him for a 8 Mill a year contract..

  13. bucco brice Says:

saints win this trade in long run…solid center and 1st rounder…2 for 1 deal, pretty good

  14. MarkfromtheBlock Says:

Somewhere in St.Louis Mark Barron is pissed to know he has to see Jimmy Boy twice a year again

  15. Phil Says:

There is a rumor that the Bucs are trading their first round pick for Drew Brees. If they make that bonehead move I’m done with the Bucs. We get a 37 year old has been and they get Jameis Winston. They can’t be that stupid can they?

  16. buddha Says:

Not to worry, Phil. Nobody wants Winston but us.

  17. ddneast Says:

Graham wasn’t the same last year after Lavonte David knocked the snot out of him in New Orleans.
Still, Mickey Loomis, Saints GM, has a pretty good eye for talent and now he has an extra No. 1 pick for this trade and a starting center to boot.
I think the Saints came out on top in this trade but of course it all depends on if the Saints hit on the pick.

  18. ddneast Says:

    Phil, Phil, Phil. Phil.
    Really.

Why are we waiting to cut Johnson?

you can make these types of moves when your QB is an all-time-great. keep him upright and your QB is the one who makes your WRs and TEs stars, not the other way around. See Tom Brady for a master class in that
